I had such a wonderful experience with this office. Dr. Akerman and his entire staff were so professional and kind. Dr. Akerman is very knowledgeable and I felt confident with him the entire time. The NP Debbie was extremely knowledgeable as well and always provided reassurance. The front office staff, Sarah, was so helpful and accommodating at every single visit and phone call. If you need any paperwork filled out or signed be prepared to wait weeks for any type of response or help. Mayra was "helping me" and said she would call me when my paper is complete but every time I've had to call for a follow up. The first time my paper work was just sitting there ready for me to pick up but I never got a call this happened TWICE which is why I'm frustrated. The second time I turned in my ONE paper on Mon & was told Dr Akerman is there Mon Wed & Fri so I called back the following Mon and my ONE paper was still not signed and the front desk seemed irritated that I'm frustrated saying she left it on Dr Akermans podium but he must have not signed it this morning so I have to wait to see if he can get to it Wed. For such a small office there should be more than one doc filling out paperwork. read more

I only selected 1 star to get my review to go through. Don't go to this Dr. you might end up losing your life or your babies life. I have Lupus yes, its a risk, yes. Although I was perfectly healthy before I get pregnant. I took care of myself and ate good, walked and exercised. My thyroid levels were good as well. So at 20 weeks I woke up one morning and felt my amniotic bag bulging from my vagina. I went straight to St Joseph, where my water bag popped. I had a fever of 102, at this time I was told my options. Basically the baby was not going to survive. I was told to go home. I was told that my pregnancy was going to be induced and that St Joseph could not do it until I was basically about to die........that St Joseph could not transport me to Western Medical where they would save my life when it was time. I was told by the nurse and the Dr. to go home and shower and by that time they would be ready for me at Western Medical Center.... I went home to shower and felt so bad we u-turned and went to Western Medical because I was shaking so bad...When I walked in to Western Medical I was in so much pain and my fever was now 104 now I couldn't walk or see straight. I went into septic shock, I also went into total organ failure....I lost my baby and then went into a coma for 7 days. I had a 108 fever which I was told it was a miracle that I survived. My kids were told that I had 15% chance survival. I then began to recover and suffered a stroke, that left me learning to function like a human being all over again. I am alive but I am still recovering. I don't think that he took my condition seriously and basically let me almost die. I think he could have done more and pushed a little harder to make sure that what happened to me didn't get as bad. He is always in a rush and doesn't take the care necessary. Please, please....if you are ever in a position that is life threatening or potentially life threatening seek medical attention and don't stop just by listening to the Dr. He may or may not know what to do... Just go and press the issue. Of course I see that the baby still would have not survived but at least maybe if the infection was contained early enough I would have not gone through what I went through and still going through. I am still recovering and will have difficulties the rest of my life. I shake, cannot walk properly have muscle cramps and spasms everyday that are painful...I have not regained strength in my hamstrings and lower leg completely...I cannot run or jog or stand. Don't get me wrong I am grateful I am alive, but Dr. Akerman could have handled this so differently! read more

Just another doctor that cares about money and is not passionate about medicine nor compassionate towards a woman in labor (which is a very vulnerable state). He is dismissive to legitimate questions. He encourages taking cough syrup when you're sick during pregnancy and does not think taking birthing classes are a good idea (he said, "why are you gonna do that for"?). He was not there when I delivered and it wouldn't have made a difference anyway. I would not recommend this doctor or St Joseph Hospital at all. They just want to speed up your labor with unnecessary interventions and put a time frame on your labor, such interventions that interfere with the natural speed of labor have many side effects and eventually end up in a c section when you were capable of birthing naturally. It's sad to imagine they do this to women but it's the truth. They will hook you up to anything they can, with no regard to the complications that may arise. I didn't need to have a C-section, but with their impatience and belief that women are not MEANT to give birth without medical intervention it led me to a c section. Then they will try to justify it by saying the baby was too big, or it was in a difficult position, etc. And through fear tactics, as all of US society that is afraid of pain. Almost all deliveries that day were C-sections. Young healthy women with unnecessary abdominal surgeries that pose threats to mom and baby all because of the medical interventions posed on women. I was a victim and I didn't know what to expect. Of course, sometimes medical intervention IS necessary but it shouldn't be the major mode of delivery. That's is why the US has a high infant and mother mortality rates. After the C-section you obviously need to take pain medication. The nurses are all trained to say that the Percocets dont transfer to the baby through the breast. THEY DO. And let's not count the multiple side effects that could happen such as blood clots, lung problems, PPD, inability to nurse and take care of your baby. My advise to whoever is reading this is to not let any doctors just mandate what should be done with your body and even more when it comes to your baby's well being. Sad but true... all they care about is monetary gain, not your well being. Always question doctors and be well informed on your own. I encourage you to read Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth. It will open your eyes. Don't let anyone rob you of your birth experience. read more

I wish i could give 0 stars. I had the worst experience, all thanks to Dr. Akerman's NP, Debbie. Went in for my first appt. and she could not find my baby's heartbeat(she calculated i was 7 weeks since my LMP). I asked, is that bad? (this is my first child, i have no idea what i'm doing and relying on professionals!!) She instantly, without ANY hesitation, replied " yep, it doesn't look good". My husband and i didn't know what to say. She instantly stopped the ultrasound and started explaining to us the process of miscarriages and how by 7 weeks from your LMP, the heartbeat MUST be seen in the ultrasound. We were devastated. She sent me to get labwork done to test my levels. After 4 days nobody would tell me results!! Finally at almost 5:30pm, one of the MAs called. All she said was "Debbie says the results are fine, just come in next week" Click. After being an emotional wreck for 4 days, that's all i get? We thankfully didn't give up hope. We switched MDs, and i am so thankful we found Dr. Garg over in Santa Ana. I had my chart faxed over to the new office, and first thing my new (amazing) MD asked was, "so you're spotting and cramping already?". I was dumbfounded. I instantly replied no, she was shocked. She said "the NP over at the other office charted that you were already miscarrying?" ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? SHAME ON YOU DEBBIE!!!! I cannot believe Dr. Akerman lets someone like her represent his name. Low and behold, 6 days after Debbie said she couldn't find my baby's heartbeat and i was miscarrying, I saw AND HEARD my growing baby's heartbeat. read more

Ackerman almost killed me in 2014. I went in at 36 weeks and told them I believed I had a bladder infection. They tested me and said no news is good news. Never got a call so I assumed I was wrong. At 37 weeks I went in with horrible back pain to find out they never tested my urine and had a very bad kidney infection which caused my kidney to stop functioning. It was the worst pain of my life! So much so that they kept drugging me without my plan to do so. I had to have a emergency surgery that sent me into labor. Not once did I get an apology just tons of medical bills for being in the hospital for over two weeks. My baby couldn't breastfeed because she was so drugged and everything was extremely painful which he did not care at all about. Don't deliver on Sunday because he doesn't work Sunday. My second delivery was so much better with a different doctor. Please be safe and don't pick him. read more

Let me start by saying I absolutely LOVED Dr. Akerman when I first went to him after searching and searching and only having terrible experiences with other ob-gyns. He spent the time to listen to my million questions and seemed very knowledgeable. I personally liked his humor, but I suppose he needs to learn how to read his patients and know whether or not it is appropriate to joke. The girls at the front desk were friendly and helpful. I was convinced I'd FINALLY found a good doctor I'd be seeing for years. My opinion has completely 180'ed since then. The last time I went in for my annual exam I walked out feeling like this was not the same office I had been to before. I had to wait a very long time in a crowded waiting room of screaming children (ok fine, to be expected at this type of office). Then I went in to see the doctor and waited a bit more. When he arrived he seemed rushed. We briefly went over a couple of questions where I mentioned I *might* have a UTI (I didn't). He did not take the time and care he did last time and I was a bit turned off by the humor since he used the same exact lines as he did on my last visit. I was thinking "does he just have those rehearsed?" Already feeling a little dazed because I was hurried through my appointment, I went to go check out at the desk and was informed that I would need to make a co-payment. Well there must be some mistake I said, my insurance covers my annual exam. The girl unapologetically responded with because the doctor had discussed the possibility of having a UTI it was no longer a preventative exam and I would then have to pay a copay. I almost cried. Unfair co-pays were the reason I stopped going to my last doctor (Dr. York - worst doctor and office staff you will ever encounter). So I had to shell out forty dollars for the thirty second conversation I had with Dr. Akerman. I realized this office is now just like every other money - hungry doctor's office I have been to in the past, where you are not a patient but a walking dollar sign. I have since tried to sort out which birth control I should be on since I changed my insurance and my old one is no longer covered. Every time I called the receptionists were extremely unhelpful, telling me I needed to talk to my pharmacy before they would send in another prescription and find out what will be covered. It is NOT my pharmacist's job to figure out which birth control pill I need. The woman at rite aid raised an eyebrow but helped me anyway. I then had a heck of a time trying to call them for the millionth time and leaving several messages (don't bother leaving a message, no one will call you back) and days later I finally had my new prescription, well after I was due to start taking it again. Well, since I've been on this new pill my body has reacted terribly, with extremely painful and heavy menstruation. This is why I'm supposed on the pill in the first place, because it has been a major issue for me in the past. The office didn't bother to look into which pill I should be on according to my file and it was up to me to figure something out with my pharmacy. Now I have suffer through this until I can find a new doctor and get a new prescription. I would not recommend this office to anyone anymore as each time I have to interact with them, the situation gets worse and worse. It is such a shame because I had such high hopes at first. Time to start looking for another doctor again. read more

Dr. Akerman removed my dermoid cyst two years ago -he did a great and amazing job - another doctor wanted to remove my ovaries :(. Glad I didn't let him. Also, I just had my baby girl and Dr. Akerman was my OB.. same experience...he helped me deliver my baby girl without complications. I have been recovering pretty good. I am concerned about Dr Akerman's ego getting the best of him when it comes to my pregnancy. I am currently 28 weeks pregnant with my first child. I have been complaining of cramping since 19 weeks, and his response then was "it's normal, don't worry" and I felt very blown off. Fast forward 4 weeks, I see his NP Debbie with the same complaints. She put me on limited duties at work but said it's too early to take me out, and that if I complain of back pain she'll just send me to physical therapy. I like Debbie, I wish I had her again today...not the case. 2 weeks go by, I call their office multiple times reporting contractions, they finally send me for 1 preterm labor monitor appt at 25 1/2 weeks, and I still have yet to get those results (2 weeks). Instead, the nurse at the facility kept blowing me off saying "you're ONLY 26 weeks pregnant..." As if to treat me like I'm crazy that I'm having contractions? 2 of which I had there and she blew off as nothing. I know what strips look like...those were "mild" but they were still there. No results yet for that appt. Today, I go in to see Dr Akerman for my 28 week appt. I tell him I've had 5 contractions today, 3 of which were 30 minutes apart and he says he doesn't care, that the baby will come when he wants to and there's nothing he or I can do to stop it. I am not impressed with the apathy he has shown me over and over, especially when this is my first pregnancy and I am especially worried about these contractions. He told me my cervix measurement 8 weeks ago on ultrasound was normal and that I should only be concerned if the contractions intensify and are close together. I asked him then about the increasing pressure I have, he said that's normal too. Bottom line is he said "historically there's a 12% chance your baby will come early and there's nothing we can do about it so don't worry." I don't like that answer. Also, shouldn't he measure my fundal height or something today? And tell me my diabetes screen was negative? I don't even think he cared to look at my labs, nor what I've been thru the last 4 weeks. I am not sure if I should continue to stick it out with this Dr, or if I should switch. All I know is I am losing confidence in his actions and in his staff, and it feels like his ego overtakes all questions and concerns I have. Also, the office has NEVER ONCE called me to give me test results. I don't know what to do. read more

I have been seeing Dr. Akerman and his staff in the Orange office for over 3 years now. I chose him for my second pregnancy and definitely made the right choice. I was an older mom with my second pregnancy at 39 and despite being AMA, they never made me feel different (unlike my first pregnancy!). Since then, I have chosen to stay with Dr. Akerman. I am always greeted with smiling faces and great customer service. I never wait more than a reasonable amount of time to be seen - even when its a urgent appointment made that day. Debbie is amazing - knowledgeable, easy to talk to and up front about everything, which I love. Dr. Akerman is the best in his field. I will continue to be a patient of this office! read more

I had been experiencing horrible pain during my period, and none of the moronic obgyns would help relieve the pain. All they wanted to do was to put me on birth control which made my symptoms worse. My body does not like synthetic hormones. This doctor listened to me and performed a hystertomy. He was compassionate and kind. He also I'd pretty funny too. Just started seeing him about 3 months ago. He will be delivering my baby via c section in April. Feel like he is very thorough in answering my questions (and I have a lot) during my office visits. He seems very knowledgable and immediately made me feel comfortable in his skill level. Today I had a scan of my baby and had some issues come Up. I had the scan at another facility and had questions and wanted to know next steps. After the other facility called Dr. Akerman, His office was expecting my call and handled everything quickly. Dr. Akerman even took a quick call from me. I was super grateful as I was really worried about the scan results. I honestly expected to have to track down the results, wait for someone to review and cross my fingers I would get a call back. That's what your typical doctors office would do. I will no longer be coming back due to the rude and unprofessional girls working up front. Rude on the phone, I was hung up on twice and ended up coming in to make an appt because that's the only way I could make them talk to me. Skip to day of my appt, and I get here and they open the door and ask me to step outside. And then the girl locks the door. Eventually a couple groups are standing outside waiting. I stood outside the office door for 30 minutes. Once they let everyone in, not one worker acknowledged anyone. They are stand there talking to each other. I was in utter disbelief that an office could be this unprofessional and still keep customers. If I hadn't already made an appt and waited two months then I would've just walked out. I finally get called to a treatment room, and they leave the door and curtain open and FOUR, I repeat, 4 different random people come into my room and don't say anything to me and walk out. After waiting about 40 minutes in the room, I ask if they forgot about me and they say no that the doctor just left and they are waiting for him to come back. Who leaves when they have a room full of patients to see?!?! I spent about 3 minutes total with the doctor and spent about 2 1/2 hours there. So ridiculous. I have never felt so uncomfortable at a doctors office. If I could give ZERO stars, I would. read more

To start off, Dr. Akerman is simply the best. He cares about his patients, is honest, and I love that I can always count on him for a laugh. But it isn't always just about the doctor, a lot can be said for your team and his team is hands down the best. I know people don't always like when they can't see the MD but Debbie the NP is just as amazing. She is caring, thoughtful, listens, and there is something that is just comforting about her. I love that I know I'm getting the best care whether it is from Dr. Akerman or Debbie. I also appreciate the continuity of care this office provides. I go to my wife's prenatal appointments with her at Dr. Akerman's office. We have seen both Debbie (nurse practitioner) and Dr. Akerman. They are both very helpful and knowledgeable. Debbie takes her time answering all your questions, she is such a wonderful and kind person. I am extremely blessed and very thankful to say I am the proud mother of a three week old beautiful, healthy baby boy, and a lot of that has to do with the care and attention I received at Dr. Akerman's office. My journey began with a diagnosis of idiopathic or unknown infertility that after many procedures fortunately ended with my amazing son, but it also made my pregnancy feel like the longest one EVER! Every step of the way, however, I had the support, encouragement and expertise from Dr. Akerman's office, rooting me on and making it all tolerable. From the warm friendly office staff when you walk through the door, to the amazing NP Debbie, and of course, Dr. Akerman, himself, I always felt like I was in safe hands. And while the niceties are all well and good, at the end of the day, Akerman knows his stuff. You don't have to sit in the waiting room long to hear every other patient sing the same praises about Akerman. My story ends with me being induced and then told I needed an emergency c-section. After being in labor for two days, pushing for three hours to no avail, and literally ready to throw in the towel from sheer exhaustion and unbearable pain, all I can say is that I was thankful I had someone I could totally trust to take the reigns and deliver myself and my son to safety.
