We were in our way to the big volcano and wow! A large orchid sign and a huge greenhouse. I had to stop. What an amazing variety of orchids. They have different sizes. They will package them for you so they are able to get on the airplane. So knowledgeable and friendly and helpful that I bought way too many things, and I do not regret it. So I highly recommend you bring your pocketbook and come on down and buy yourself some beautiful orchids to take home. If you like Orchids, you gotta check this place out. It's on the way back from Volcanoes National Park and right on the main street. There is a little display of some of the varieties as well as the nursery of thousands of orchids in the back. I don't care about orchids or plants in general. But my in laws do. So we stopped by here and boy I'm sure glad we did. Geneva was so helpful and kind to my in laws and basically knows everything about orchids. Not sure how long we spent there - felt very long for me- but they got tons of helpful information about the care of orchids and Geneva told them to email her if they're having problems and to send pictures of the orchid they bought. So if you go there - ask to speak to Geneva! She's the best! There wasn't any fee to go into their "maze" which is just a small exhibit area. Make sure to look at the $20,000 orchid. Just looked like a regular flower to me but the insurance company says otherwise. I just like that they were so friendly and helpful and clearly very passionate about what they do. There aren't that many places like that anymore where the people just love what they do and they want their customers to love it also. Plenty of parking at 10am. It wasn't available for months, so when I got an email in early December that it was back in stock, I rushed to order it. Unfortunately, in my haste I made a couple of mistakes. First, I used my sister's address for billing. Second, I neglected to ask my sister if she'd be available to receive it. I found out she was planning to visit other family, and might be there when the package arrived. The very helpful folks at Akatsuka received my multiple emails explaining my mistakes. They quickly responded and assured me they could send it to my address instead. I cannot say enough about how easy it was to do business with these folks, and how helpful they are! My husband and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii and were thrilled to find this little shop close to our AirBnb. If you are a plant-lover, this shop is a must-see destination! If you're a serious orchid enthusiast like me, you've got to add them to your list of places to visit on the Big Island. They do offer tours if that is what you may be interested in and they also have a gift shop that you can look through too. But mainly it's the orchids that you will be coming here to see! Many of the hybrids they have are the result of crossing different plants to create unique specimens. If you see "Volcano Queen" on the tag, it's unique to Akatsuka. Over the years they have created so many beautiful orchids here. I even found some hard to find varieties after talking to their manager Curtis. He is a wealth of information on anything to do with orchids. You never have to worry about how to care for your plant because they are just an email away. Such a treasure to be found out in Volcano, HI. My family and I have lived down the road from here for a long time and have seen this place get more and more impressive. I love all plants, not just orchids, and I love how they have so many beautiful plants growing inside of their shop that are just for display and for the customers enjoyment. We brought our toddler with us and it is a spacious place with some kid friendly areas so we were pleased that she could walk around and enjoy the beautiful plants, too. We all were very happy there. Akatsuka Orchid Garden is really incredible! The variety of flowers, including orchids (of course), anthuriums, and bromeliads is really amazing. The orchid maze includes informational iPads describing different varieties or techniques and an "ALOHA" sign with 700 plants. I learned that many orchids have scents, and Akatsuka has varieties that smell like roses or chocolate. Many of the decorative orchids we see don't have scents. So cool! Tours of the greenhouse are available through the week. There is also a gift shop with orchid-related items and other things people would like from Hawaii. Oh, and the poha berry ice cream is so delicious! They grow their own poha berries on site and have Tropical Dreams make a special ice cream that is only sold here. It's creamy, fresh, and oh so good! Definitely worth a try. The workers are also really nice and helpful. A great stop for both locals and tourists alike. read more

Akatsuka Orchids are fantastic, if I could I would give them 10 stars. I started out with one orchid plant at the beginning of the year and now I have over 30 and the majority of them came from Akatsuka Orchids. I purchased from two other vendors and was extremely disappointed. The plant I received from Akatsuka are healthy and larger than I ever expected. My very favorite one is the Sherry Baby Oncidium which came with three spikes and filled with flowers. Since I live in Wisconsin all of my plants are shipped and received in excellent condition. A very nice stop on our way through town. They have large greenhouses of orchids in the back for their commercial operation, but they have very nice area you can walk through to see their many varieties. Many of them have signs on them letting you know you should stop and take a sniff of their amazing scents. They even have the vanilla and chocolate scented orchids. They do have a large gift shop that is designed to take anything it can from your pocket book, but that doesn't take away from the flowers and scents you can check out while there. They do have restrooms available at the back of the store, and they offer free orchids for the ladies to put in their hair. If I was visiting the big island again with people who hadn't previously visited Akatsuka Orchid Gardens and they were interested in flowers I would recommend it as a stop on your way through. read more

Akatsuka is a super awesome place for orchid lovers, I dont even grow orchids because they arent my style of gardening, and I cant seem to keep them alive. I think it's pretty lame that some jerk will come and put a crappy review for this great place, and lower their rating, just because they dont enjoy orchids. If you didnt want to get stuck doing things that arent of your interest, you should have went to Oahu for your vacation, and stayed in Waikiki, in the concrete jungle, and RENTED A CAR. Just in case you didnt know, the Big Island IS known as "The Orchid Isle"!!!! This place has the most beautiful orchids I have ever seen! Upon walking in, you can smell the loveliness wafting in the air. They also have a basket & bobby pins so that you can put a lovely orchid in your hair. The staff is very friendly and willing to help out & answer any questions you may have about orchids. It is such a unique store because their specialty is orchids. There is an array of orchids - all beautiful for their own reasons. There is also a gift store there that has a bunch of neat souvenir type stuff. They can also ship orchids, if you would like. (It is pretty spendy though.)
