This orchid nursery is amazing!!. I have purchased orchids from Akatsuka for a few years. This year I attended the Hilo Orchid Show which was beauty to a whole new level. I have slowly started becoming an orchid enthusiast. I only have 15 orchids, but I know I am well on my way to purchasing, many more. Akatsuka does a great job shipping inter island and to the mainland. They have a great website, and newsletters too. I am always impressed with their attention to detail, and the quality and beauty of their orchids. They are a great business. . read more

Cyndy's Bottom Line: Beautiful healthy orchids For the first time I ordered orchids online to ship to the Mainland. The website is easy to navigate to make a purchase. You can order orchid plants in a variety of growth stages. I choose an orchid with blooms and one that has buds. I was happy to see this option because I wanted blooms as well as buds to give as a gift. The orchids are shipped Fedex 2 days. I was utterly amazed at how the orchids arrived. They were meticulously wrapped with a lot of care and attention. The orchids arrived unscathed from the arduous journey from Hilo, Hawaii to Virginia in perfect condition. They were healthy and so beautiful and came with a information sheet on the origin of the orchid and how to care instructions. The customer service is excellent. You can reached them by phone or e-mail. The website is a wealth of knowledge providing orchid care guides. You can also purchase fertilizer, and supplies. Website: akatsuka orchid.com Akatsuka Orchid Gardens also sell other plants besides orchids. You can purchase anthurium, and tropical plants like tillandsia - air plants, and bromeliads. *Highly recommend Akatsuka Orchids. Love how many orchids they carry! All the smells are amazing. Definitely taking family here when they visit!

Beautiful orchids in bloom, many for sale. This nursery has developed a few thousand hybrid orchids since opening. Helpful, cheerful staff. We are not orchids experts but have had several over the years and appreciate their beauty and the time and care the plants require. We were in our way to the big volcano and wow! A large orchid sign and a huge greenhouse. I had to stop. What an amazing variety of orchids. They have different sizes. They will package them for you so they are able to get on the airplane. So knowledgeable and friendly and helpful that I bought way too many things, and I do not regret it. So I highly recommend you bring your pocketbook and come on down and buy yourself some beautiful orchids to take home. They will help you find the correct one such as, either need more humidity, less humidity etc. etc. for your environment. What a fun place to come with my daughter and share this experience. I highly recommend making a stop here when you're on the big Island. read more

If you like Orchids, you gotta check this place out. It's on the way back from Volcanoes National Park and right on the main street. There is a little display of some of the varieties as well as the nursery of thousands of orchids in the back. So cool to just walk around for few minutes even if you have no intention of buying anything. Lovely to look at all of the flowers and plants in this complex. I don't care about orchids or plants in general. But my in laws do. So we stopped by here and boy I'm sure glad we did. Geneva was so helpful and kind to my in laws and basically knows everything about orchids. Not sure how long we spent there - felt very long for me- but they got tons of helpful information about the care of orchids and Geneva told them to email her if they're having problems and to send pictures of the orchid they bought. So if you go there - ask to speak to Geneva! She's the best! There wasn't any fee to go into their "maze" which is just a small exhibit area. Make sure to look at the $20,000 orchid. Just looked like a regular flower to me but the insurance company says otherwise. I just like that they were so friendly and helpful and clearly very passionate about what they do. There aren't that many places like that anymore where the people just love what they do and they want their customers to love it also. Plenty of parking at 10am. They ship anywhere in the US. read more

Reviewing for their online shop: Akatsuka was exceptionally helpful with my online order for an anthurium I wanted I get for my sister in San Diego. It wasn't available for months, so when I got an email in early December that it was back in stock, I rushed to order it. Unfortunately, in my haste I made a couple of mistakes. First, I used my sister's address for billing. Second, I neglected to ask my sister if she'd be available to receive it. I found out she was planning to visit other family, and might be there when the package arrived. The very helpful folks at Akatsuka received my multiple emails explaining my mistakes. They quickly responded and assured me they could send it to my address instead. I cannot say enough about how easy it was to do business with these folks, and how helpful they are! You can rest assured you're going to get excellent customer service with your online orders! read more

My husband and I were on our honeymoon in Hawaii and were thrilled to find this little shop close to our AirBnb. If you are a plant-lover, this shop is a must-see destination! There's a huge selection of gorgeous orchids and other beautiful flowers throughout the store. I have a terrible habit of showing my plants too much love by overwatering, however, one of the super friendly staff members took time to explain the watering process to me. I had the orchid-babies I purchased shipped back to the mainland since I didn't want them getting damaged on the plane, and there was a slight snafu once the orchids arrived, however, I contacted Akatsuka who resolved the problem immediately. I'm blown away by this incredible company. Biggest orchids I've ever seen and greatest customer service ever! read more

Such a treasure to be found out in Volcano, HI. My family and I have lived down the road from here for a long time and have seen this place get more and more impressive. I love all plants, not just orchids, and I love how they have so many beautiful plants growing inside of their shop that are just for display and for the customers enjoyment. We brought our toddler with us and it is a spacious place with some kid friendly areas so we were pleased that she could walk around and enjoy the beautiful plants, too. We all were very happy there. They also have nicely packaged orchid plants that are ready to travel so visitors can take them on the plane easily and raise their own special Volcano orchids. read more

The Orchid Maze is now free of charge and is open as a showroom where you can take all the pictures that you desire! A great stop for aspiring photographers and people who feel that they do not have what it takes to grow orchids, they offer total customer support in helping you to succeed in raising orchids and they have a HUGE variety of Cattleya's and other orchid types that are originals to the owner, Moriyasu. Because Volcano area can be rainy and the recent lava activity has the park closed, this is a must-see place. You can have nature and stay dry on one of those true rain forest-y kinda days. This is NOT an attraction. It is a store that you should go to if you want to buy orchids. If you don't want to buy orchids, there isn't anything else that will make your visit here worthwhile. I did not see an orchid maze. Just a few rows of plants on display...some with blossoms as big as my hand. That was cool, but definitely not worth a special trip just to see that. read more

Spur of the moment decision to visit. Glad we did! We had already seen some beautiful orchids at other spots, but these took my breath away. I'll only post two of the many pics I took because I'd like to encourage more people to visit and add pics of their own. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FsEZCu-85t2WjC3yuqJsqw?select=KnlEAQk5dDdQjQS3tos9cw http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FsEZCu-85t2WjC3yuqJsqw?select=ec18hC23TJARo1qnLpyR6A They're available for purchase and can be shipped home. If you're an orchid enthusiast, I'd recommend a visit. I would have loved to purchase some, but I'm a plant-killer and these lovely orchids should not be left in my care. So, I just have to content myself with being a lookee-loo. After going through the gift shop, there's a bowl on the counter where the ladies can pick an orchid to pin in their hair. Part of Hawaiian tradition! http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/FsEZCu-85t2WjC3yuqJsqw?select=2Dg3LU2rnfrhvsdI1H4CtQ I happily picked out a lovely purple bloom along with a piece of fern and pinned them on my left side. Nice little stop between Hilo and VNP. Even as a non-plant-geek, you can still appreciate the wide variety of exotic looking flowers. Some of them even smell like chocolate or coconut! A very nice stop on our way through town. They have large greenhouses of orchids in the back for their commercial operation, but they have very nice area you can walk through to see their many varieties. Many of them have signs on them letting you know you should stop and take a sniff of their amazing scents. They even have the vanilla and chocolate scented orchids. They do have a large gift shop that is designed to take anything it can from your pocket book, but that doesn't take away from the flowers and scents you can check out while there. They do have restrooms available at the back of the store, and they offer free orchids for the ladies to put in their hair. Akatsuka Orchid Garden is really incredible! The variety of flowers, including orchids (of course), anthuriums, and bromeliads is really amazing. The orchid maze includes informational iPads describing different varieties or techniques and an "ALOHA" sign with 700 plants. I learned that many orchids have scents, and Akatsuka has varieties that smell like roses or chocolate. Many of the decorative orchids we see don't have scents. So cool! Tours of the greenhouse are available through the week. There is also a gift shop with orchid-related items and other things people would like from Hawaii. Oh, and the poha berry ice cream is so delicious! They grow their own poha berries on site and have Tropical Dreams make a special ice cream that is only sold here. It's creamy, fresh, and oh so good! Definitely worth a try. The workers are also really nice and helpful. A great stop for both locals and tourists alike. read more

Akatsuka Orchids are fantastic, if I could I would give them 10 stars. I started out with one orchid plant at the beginning of the year and now I have over 30 and the majority of them came from Akatsuka Orchids. I purchased from two other vendors and was extremely disappointed. The plant I received from Akatsuka are healthy and larger than I ever expected. My very favorite one is the Sherry Baby Oncidium which came with three spikes and filled with flowers. Since I live in Wisconsin all of my plants are shipped and received in excellent condition. Customer service is very friendly and always answers my question, since I am new at this I have a lot of question. Thank You Akatsuka Orchids. read more

Late post - went here last month, all us outer islanders were being tourists and noticed this place as we passed it on our way to the Volcano. Glad this place was open on a Sunday and we also got to walk through Orchid maze. Kamaaina rate $3, yayer. So the maze showcases different types of orchids, which were all BEAUTIFUL and in full bloom...I have a black thumb so props to Orchid care takers. The maze also has some videos at certain spots to explain how to water orchids, how the orchid is planted, etc. The main attraction is their $30,000 orchid. It seemed like my 4 yr old nephew enjoyed running around and looking at the orchids. If you want to take home an orchid plants they can help you with that or ship. The staff was very knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. I was eyeing an vanilla orchid but I'm not ready for the responsibilty yet, so until then I'll just stare at the pictures. read more

*PRE COVID* Top notch orchid nursery and showroom located in Volcano on the Big Island. If you're a serious orchid enthusiast like me, you've got to add them to your list of places to visit on the Big Island. They do offer tours if that is what you may be interested in and they also have a gift shop that you can look through too. But mainly it's the orchids that you will be coming here to see! Many of the hybrids they have are the result of crossing different plants to create unique specimens. If you see "Volcano Queen" on the tag, it's unique to Akatsuka. Over the years they have created so many beautiful orchids here. I even found some hard to find varieties after talking to their manager Curtis. He is a wealth of information on anything to do with orchids. You never have to worry about how to care for your plant because they are just an email away. They will get back to you in a timely manner and I really appreciated that! Really super nice folks! So when you're on the Big Island, check them out. Oh, I almost forgot to mention that they are certified by the Dept. Of Agriculture and they can ship virtually anywhere!!! Five Solid Stars * * * * * read more

Akatsuka is a super awesome place for orchid lovers, I dont even grow orchids because they arent my style of gardening, and I cant seem to keep them alive. I think it's pretty lame that some jerk will come and put a crappy review for this great place, and lower their rating, just because they dont enjoy orchids. If you didnt want to get stuck doing things that arent of your interest, you should have went to Oahu for your vacation, and stayed in Waikiki, in the concrete jungle, and RENTED A CAR. Just in case you didnt know, the Big Island IS known as "The Orchid Isle"!!!!
