Amazing small husband and wife studio. I was lucky enough to come in time to see them blowing a piece. Arrived at 3pm and watched for about 30 minutes such an amazing process. I was looking for a paperweight to give as a gift for a co-worker who is leaving for a new job and came across this website. Their glass art pieces are stunning, so I decided to place an online order (I also wanted to support a small local business). I received my order in two days...so quick! When I opened the box, I was overwhelmed at the beauty of the paperweight. I ordered the Lt. Blue/Blue, and it was absolutely gorgeous. I had requested a nice box for the paperweight since it was a gift, but Misato sent me a cute lauhala box since she didn't have a box for the paperweight. How nice of her! We have purchased art glass all over the world, and Michael and Misato's work is amazing! I am glad we added some of their beautiful pieces to our collection; visiting their studio and watching them make two large jars was a special treat. When we first arrived, they barely acknowledged our presence; I could see how this may put off some people. However, the reason they didn't acknowledge our presence was because they were completely focused on creating, and didn't have the time to get distracted with us. Once we realized that they weren't ignoring us, they were being exceedingly careful with their work, we were able to watch and wait, and seeing the process of creation was fantastic. When they finished up, after about 45 minutes, they had the opportunity to focus on something else, and they patiently answered our questions, and processed our purchases. We will be returning on future trips, and in the meantime, we will be enjoying our treasures that we discovered at 2400 Fahrenheit. read more

This place is super hard to find. First off the only way you can figure out where this place is, is a small sign on the side of the highway. And it's not on both sides of the road its on one side of the road. So if your driving from the volcano to hilo you will not see this sign. Just know it's right after the orchid garden. Coming to this place you think you'd get to see the artist actually do some glass blowing and maybe try it yourself. Nope you get to come to this artist's home where he has a show room. Everything is about 100 dollars and none of it is actually worth the price. Coolest thing about this place was their dogs. They seriously looked like bears and they were so fluffy and cute!!! If you'r staying on the volcano don't waste your time here go to the Volcano hertiage village instead. Atleast you won't waste your time. read more

I love Michael Mortara's work and consider him to be among the most talented glass blowers you could find anywhere. I have been collecting his work now for over 6 years. 2400 Fahrenheit is a working artist's studio, the fact that this facility is open to the public is a rarity - particularly when you are dealing with glass blowing (a very exacting art that requires many steps.) Should you be planning a trip to Michael & Misato's working studio, where you can watch them blow actual pieces that they are working on, use common sense and call in advance to see what their schedule is. That someone arrived at a time when there was not a great deal of work taking place is unfortunate but this is a working "fine art" glass blower's studio (not a tourist sidewalk glass worker where some guy can spin glass to make you a unicorn within an hour. ) What you can expect to see when work is not taking place, is thier working facility, the tools they use in blowing glass, and a wonderful gallery where there are newer works that have often not been released to commercial galleries generally priced lower than you will find at commercial galleries. You will also have the opportunity to speak directly with Michael and/or Misato, Michael's wife, regarding what new colors or series they are working on. And, when you call ahead, they can sometimes take the time out of their busy schedule to allow someone to manipulate an actual piece of glass - like they did with our 10 year old daughter - teaching her secrets is glass explaining to her (and us) how exacting and difficult it is to blow glass, how color becomes embedded within the glass and how much time, thought, creativity and hard work it take to create the beautiful pieces their studio turns out year after year. In short, remember that this is a working artist's studio, so call ahead if you want to see them working. Also remember this is not a factory like Dale Chihuly where there are many workers blowing glass based on Chiuly's designs, here you are watching and meeting the real artist that is creating and blowing the glass with maybe the assistance of an apprentice. It's a wonderful and rare treat to see Michael work and one that I would highly recommend to anyone that is visiting the Big Island. It may be a bit hard to find - but it's well worth the road less traveled! read more

You can watch the glass blowing before or after shopping for unique, one-of-a-kind glass cups, vases, jewelry, and outstanding objets d'art. Some of the pieces were way out of my price range, but were stunning nonetheless. I found some pretty gifts to take home that were in my price range. Woo hoo! read more

Our group of 6 enjoyed our visit to 2400 Fahrenheit last year and were impressed with the beautiful art glass. The owners were very friendly, letting us watch them blowing glass, explaining the different processes they use and then leaving off their work to help us with our purchases. The only difficulty was choosing between so many beautiful pieces. My family from the U.K. bought a piece of jewelry and several small glass pieces (vases and a paperweight) and I bought a small glass vase and a gorgeous large platter which they shipped to me. The platter came promptly and was very well packaged so that it was able to make the long journey from Volcano to Massachusetts and arrive in perfect condition. This place is a gem and well worth a visit. read more

True, it is hard to find but pay attention to their directions and know there are several "Old Volcano" roads in Volcano and you will be fine. Turn onto the Old Volcano road between mile markers 23 & 24, this is a few miles away from the Village and the park. Their studio is comprised of a small shop/gallery and the rest is their glass making space and what appears to be supplies. I talked with the owner for an hour and she is very friendly. Unfortunately her husband had a medical issue and wasn't able to be in the shop or near heat, so no glass blowing today. They had a variety of pieces, all different prices, in the shop and they are super talented. I was amazed by some of their pieces. Don't think you'll come to their shop to try glass blowing, as one naive reviewer mentioned--glass blowing is a technical art, dangerous due to the high temperatures and materials. There are so few glass blowing studios in Hawaii that just getting to see them in action would be special enough. read more

This is a working glass blowing studio and it is a treat to watch the artists making beautiful glass pieces. Anyone visiting Hawaii Island should know that there are no permanent roadside signs for businesses. Either use google maps or watch for a small sign on the uphill side of the road to find the turnoff. I take all my visitors here and they all think this is a wonderful place to visit. They sell their art at their small gallery in the same building but even if you can't afford to buy any it is like going to an art museum. read more

It's literally a small of very expensive displays. Clearly they're not there to sell the items in the store for day to day tourist. There's not much to do in Hilo except for the Volcano park so we stopped by here. Spent a total of 15 minutes. Nothing spectacular and no one there really talked to us. read more

I have been to this studio and have met the owners. They have always been pleasant and professional. According to Michael's response, it was their day off - so I wonder who this women ran into anyway. She thought she could "try her hand" at working with glass - apparently she has never checked into this possibility. Some studios give classes but they are costly and never free and impromptu. This studio is a great place to visit and their items are world class. Sometimes you can watch them working too. Stop by, you will love it. read more

We saw the sign on our way to the Kilauea Lodge, had seen some if their pieces throughout the lodge and Volcano Art center and decided to make a visit to their shop. Very friendly and I love their pieces. Wish I had more money to pick up some more. Maybe on our next trip! read more

The place is on a side road off of the highway, there is a sign that directs you when to turn. Their glass art is great, we bought three relatively inexpensive sculptures. They will ship it to the mainland for you- the good part about doing this is that due to the state sales tax law, if you ship it out of state you don't pay sales tax. The postage was less than the sales tax so we saved money and didn't have to carry the pieces around with us for the rest of the vacation. read more
