As of January 2025, Volcano Art Center in Volcano Village is closed Saturdays and Sundays. Their location inside the park adjacent to the Visitor Center is open 7 days per week. Each location contains a selection of pieces from a wide variety of local artists. read more

If you visit the volcano park make sure you won't forget to visit the art gallery. It will surprise you. It will hooked you. It will truly made you admire the talent of these local artists from the island. Indeed it is one of the best way to support local. Various glass artist to painters and photographers, all showcase their talent here. The work and dedication they put will reflect on how their talent drawn your emotion. This art center gallery is also a way of understanding the historical background of the volcano park. There were seven rooms and each are filled with various artworks and crafts. Several procedures are being impose; wear face covering while inside, six feet distance from other people & no more than four people occupy small rooms at one time. The staffs are pretty friendly and efficient as well. We did enjoy the mini self tour and ended up buying some holiday post cards and glass decorative for our tiki nest. We saw art in the center outside the park and then learned to make tea leaf leis it the center in the park. Making leis was kid friendly and free (on Fridays only). The center is continently located across from Volcano house (which is great for lunch looking over the volcano). read more

The art gallery is very quaint and the staff was really nice. They featured local artists and have items that are more affordable, $50 and up. There was a small sculpture garden and they were interesting too. They also had a yarn or crochet (?) feature that was incorporated in the building and that was really lovely. There's also a small pathway if you'd like to take a look and since it's their administrative office they're not open as much as the other gallery inside volcanoes national park. It's somewhat child friendly and there's a few restaurants in the area so it's convenient to get to. read more

If you are in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and are at the Kīlauea Visitor Center just go to the left (as you look at the visitor's center) and you will arrive at the Volcano Art Center. Ensure it is not close to closing time or they will warn you to come back tomorrow as they close promptly. The art was created by local artists and there is a lot to see and if you are interested in purchasing items there is plenty of media to choose from. Keep in mind that they do this for a living so prices are not cheap for a quick souvenir like you can get at the visitor's center. read more

This is a historic building where people would stay when visiting the area. There are also restrooms in an adjacent small building to the art center. We must have spent quite some time here looking through all the art. It's all done by local artists and all available for purchase. The art is strewn about all their varying rooms. I really fell in love with some of the vases. There is jewelry and scarves designed by local artists. My Sweetie noticed I was eyeing a few of them and ended buying two necklaces for me. One is a glass seahorse pendant, which cost $30 and the other is a $160 necklace that says "aloha au iā oe." Both very cute pieces! We don't mind supporting local artists. Both pieces were boxed nicely in a padded volcano center labeled box. The staff were very friendly and patient with us. read more

Beautiful collection of art from many talented artists mostly from the Big Island. Large historic space. The only negative was the two bitchy women who worked there yesterday the day my party of four arrived. We went to the entrance but didn't realize due to Covid the entrance had changed. There WAS a sign. We asked if we could enter and she motioned the entrance was that way down the walkway and four to a room. I said thank you and headed to the new Covid entrance and they laughed at us as if we were stupid. Nice ALOHA ladies. We followed the four person rule in each room. I was interested in purchasing a turned bowl. I collect several and one caught my eye. I went into the main gallery and asked what wood the building was made of. It had a finish on it and I couldn't tell. They said ohia and I said, "Oh." I have lots of ohia trees on my two acre property so I'm very familiar with it and have done extensive research on Rapid Ohia Death. I also spent an hour the day before removing ohia leaves from my gutters. As Vice President of the Hawaii Island Palm Society I have arranged to have seminars with speakers at UH to talk about ROD to our HIPS members. Instead of asking if I was familiar with the tree they gave me a speech like I was a child on "the tree you see outside all around with the tiny leaves and flowers". I was still curious about the finish because it's an old building and the wood had a yellowish cast. When I inquired what the finish was the tall witch said, "I wouldn't know I wasn't around in the late 1800s." Wow! It was just a question and she didn't need to be so rude! I left without buying a thing. Train your staff to show some aloha to visitors and Kamaiana. The whole experience was ruined by the shrews you had working there that day. There are plenty of galleries in Hilo. I'm an avid art collector. I've put extentions on my home twice in Leilani Estates so I would have more room for art. I'll spend my money on art where the staff is kind and not ugly to potential customers. If she don't like talking to visitors to the gallery she should retire. read more

The very best collection of Hawaiian artwork on the Big Island! Whether you are looking to make an investment in a larger art piece or are looking for that special smaller something to commemorate your beautiful Hawaii experience this shop has it! The island wood working is so stunning, such talented artists. I fell in love with the Koa and mango woods. Lots of great pottery pieces and jewelry too. And the children's room was creative and unique. There are at least five more things I would have bought is suitcase space wasn't already maxed out! I'll admit. Came here because our volcano entrance was closed due to vigorous volcano activities. We didn't plan to come here per se. However, it was a nice surprise. The staff was courteous and even helped us with spraying our shoes before entering their rain forest garden. They have clean restrooms too in case you need it. This review is for their rain forest garden. It's free to come in. Feel free to make a donation. The garden has at least 30 species of ferns with explanations about each specie and their uses. Some ferns even have fiddle heads- very beautiful. It's a short walk about 0.5 mile. The only reason why it's only 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's not something so major that we would go out of our ways to go there (the garden review, NOT the gallery review) Sorry this review is not for the gallery but for the garden they house. When we were there, they were having a live recording introducing their gallery collections, so we didn't get to view the gallery to form an opinion. We couldn't wait because we have places on our agenda to go before it gets too dark. Staff at least seems to be nice! read more

This is a cute little gallery.They have some very interesting pieces, although very expensive! Even if you don't buy anything,it's still nice to walk through. There are many different types of art, (at a variety of prices.) They're all done by local artists,and very unique. The building is also interesting in it's own right. Cool art gallery adjacent to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Visitors Center. Much of the art was locally created by artists in the nearby town of Volcano. Media includes jewelry, woodwork, paintings, textiles, and glass. Their feature piece is an Audobon style book on endangered and endemic birds. If I had $3,000, I would buy an unbound copy. It's so beautiful. Otherwise, stop by and a volunteer will go through the first edition with you. If you are going to HAVO, it's worth a visit. read more

Local artists supply all the fodder. These same said artists are the people the Kilauea Wilderness Marathon 10, and 5 mile races turn to for awards. Nice to see local art utilizes this way. The Volcano Art Center hosts a half marathon, 10 k and 5 k around August to help raise funds. Just called today 02/13/14 at around 0900 to ask for information as me and my GF wanted to participate. Being that we are from Oahu, have to both request leave for it during the peak summer month and had very specific lodging we wanted, we were called to ask for information. Thank you to the most stuck up and unhelpful person we have encountered in a long time. Yes...we realized its not till August but real people have jobs...they have to plan this stuff out if they want to participate and support your cause. But...I guess you were too busy to speak civilly. Sorry to have bothered you Sir. We won't make that mistake again. We won't support your art center either by buying as we have in the past. Or participating in anything associated with you in the future. read more

This place is within the national park and is so wonderful to visit. I wished I had more money to spent and that I won the lottery!! The building is wonderful from an architectural point, historical, and from the I want a chair a cup of tea and a book to just hang out in the place. Great local artists selections, lovely grounds and really nice and helpful staff. Oh - there was art paper outside to draw on, the had presentations about local art (I think daily) as well as a basic Hawaiian dance class. I was sorry I missed it!! Well done gallery with featured local artists: there are things in all price ranges here, my abstract painting of the volcano is a great addition to my art hallway. Very friendly staff easily helped me mail the art back home, now I have a hot steaming pile of lava pictured in my office at work as well to remind me of the hot times in the park. read more

This is the first "Volcano House" where people came back in the 1800's to view the volcanic splendor of the park. Now an art gallery of local artists full of paintings, drawings, sculptures, pottery and such things one would expect to find in a local art gallery. I did not buy anything, but there were some very nice pieces of art showing the native birds - and of course the Nene. (https://goo.gl/dZ2phy) There was a really nice model of a long distance Hawaiian outrigger. I imagine it to be something similar to what the first people who came to Hawaii used - as described in Michener's book Hawaii. It was priced at a gazillion dollars, but even if I had a gazillion dollars, I have no place in the house for it - unless I swapped it out for my F4J Phantom Jet scale model... and that's not going to happen. The outrigger model and the bird paintings are the best stuff there in my opinion. It's also fun to look up into the rafters of this dilapidated old building and see that it's still holding up along with the fire place. Our visit took about 30 minutes and was quite enjoyable. This is a good activity to save up for when it's raining outside and you can't go for a hike. read more

Warmest reception in Volcano Village. The receptionist told me they had to relocate from their main gallery to their office building due to the the park closure, and they've put together a nice display of art from around the island in this new spot. There's also a little rainforest walk in the back with plaques describing the plants. read more

Located across from Volcanoes National Park's visitor center, the gallery used to be a hotel, which explains why it's made up of small rooms. A lot of the art pertains to volcanoes, but plenty of it doesn't, and most of it was pretty mediocre. Disappointingly so, I mean, I looked at many of the pieces and thought of similar ones I'd seen elsewhere that were so much better. Many mediums there: photo, paint, pastel, glass, wood, metal, fabric, ceramic, etc. The wooden pieces were probably my favorite, and ranged from bowls to lamps to benches. There were some great photos of volcanic eruptions as well, but at no point did I feel I needed to have anything in there. read more

Gallery great, but staff is beyond incompetent. I bought a nice (and not cheap) print on a recent trip. The staff asked if I wanted them to prepare it for travel. Assuming that they knew what they were doing, I said yes. Not only did they charge me for a tube (only $2, but when you're spending $100s, some bennies could be expected), but the worker man-handled it off the backing, scratching it in places and we didn't find out until we got home (rental in Pahoa). A drive back from Pohoa wasn't worth it and it's your word against theirs at that point anyway. It will still look good, but it's not what we paid for. I would like to support them, they have a good mission, feel and objective, but after this experience it's hard to recommend doing anymore than browsing. If you're serious about buying something, I recommend finding the artists themselves and ordering direct. While it's true that the prices are high here, that's true at almost every gallery on the island. I got slightly lucky, while it was overpriced, the Volcano Gallery's price was slightly lower than the artist's webpage. But the artists themselves would treat their own work much better. read more

My visiting parents loved it, and to my amazement, since they had shown no interest in shopping anywhere else, busted out their wallets for some relatively inexpensive signed prints by local artists. Staff was friendly and unobtrusive. Fun place to browse. Pretty good prices considering it's original art and fine craft by local artists, with enough lower price points available to balance off the superexpensive. Prices were clearly marked. Sometimes they are doing cultural demonstrations like you can make your own kukui nut lei or make your own nose flute (insert witty joke here). The only thing they seemed to lack was jewelry. A great place to hit on a rainy day in Volcano (almost every day). read more
