It's a bit fancier than Lucky's and I'm not much for raw Sushi but they have the cooked and hibachi style grill here the time I ate here was very cool watching the chefs whip up the food. It was delicious and pricey but not too bad. If you have a large group or family it's comparable to Mongolian BBQ in Ann Arbor and Lansing and everyone was delightfed to have a restaurant like that in Jackson which was mostly fast food, Denny's and Bob Evans oriented before these nice new businesses opened. I've been an ardent supporter since AKA moved in, but unfortunately things change & AKA seems to think they are now "all that." I don't like being treated like I interrupted your break or in a condescending way. And I'm not sure why, but I don't think the employees are allowed to smile. And It's always entertaining while waiting for your food to have the "hot shots" themselves drinking at the bar @3pm discussing how awesome they are with their drinking friends. Passing through Jackson on I-94, two business colleagues and I consulted Yelp to find an undisputed winner...a top-notch sushi house that totally blew us away with its service, food and atmosphere. Samantha, our gregarious server whose constant smiles told me that she clearly enjoyed her job, enthusiastically pointed out AKA's most popular lunch choices...a real nice touch that I have come to greatly appreciate. After enjoying a delicious salad and small bowl of Miso, each of the three of us opted for a different Bento Box...one anchored with the most popular Chicken Teriyaki, one with Salmon Teriyaki and one with AKA's namesake Sushi. Excellent Soosh and 'Yaki dishes! The restaurant itself was completely renovated within the last six months and reflects a clean, modern ambience in a striking bright white so fitting for this Japanese eatery. I have been a customer of AKA for at least the past 8 years (when the entire restaurant was where the bar is now) and I'm sad to say (after a recent visit) that I don't see a reason to ever go back. There was a noticeable decline in the quality of the sushi and a noticeable increase in the prices after they did the remodel/expansion a few years ago. I had pretty much stopped going altogether before the pandemic started, but we recently thought we would give AKA another try. That was a mistake. We ordered a sashimi platter and 3 out of the 6 selections were cooked. Perhaps there are people who order sashimi that want cooked sashimi, but I am definitely not one of them. We also ordered a couple of rolls, but the best I can say about them is they were fine. The sushi kiosk in our grocery store could have made them and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference. Lastly, the waitress was visibly agitated about something before she even walked up to our table and it showed in her service. Ordering a bottle of wine seemed like an inconvenience and when I asked her about a Naruto roll she told me that they have never had a Naruto roll at AKA. I have enjoyed a Naruto roll at AKA on many occasions so was there really a point in telling me that I'm wrong? read more

Only complaint is the last time I ordered carry out they told me 20 mins and I was waiting for over 40. Though it was a Friday night. This is probably my favorite restaurant in town. I love the atmosphere and the waitstaff are always very friendly. I have tried many items on the the menu and haven't been disappointed. The specialty rolls are wonderful, the tempura are always perfectly fried, and the appetizers are exceptional. The portions are nice and your order always comes in a timely manner. The one set back is the location. Although the business has expanded since opening, the Starbucks drive through next door makes it difficult to get in and out of the parking lot if the line is long. read more

An hour to get a "sushi and sashimi" diner - service was good, salad and miso soup were fine and served quickly. Horrible amount of time when you're watching take-out dinners go out the door. Was told time will "free up" after Christmas. Order looks average at best considering I'm in Michigan. Quality of the fish was below average and would be considered poor if you ever had real sushi. Great find! Very friendly service and great food. A bit small as space is concerned but well worth it. I eat a lot of sushi in Fort Wayne, and Aka outdoes each one. Their Dragon roll was phenomenal. The various other pieces I tried was the tuna, squid, and sea urchin. Large quality portions. All amazing. Be sure to order the house tea during your visit. I can't wait to get back there. read more

I highly recommend this place. I now live in Chicago and have not been able to find sushi that matches the caliber at AKA. Good sushi but... we went to this place last weekend for curbside delivery during covid-19. But they don't have curbside, you had to go inside. I go inside and of about eight people waiting for sushi only me and one other have a mask on. The two girls handling our food and taking your money, no mask! The one girl with a nose ring is playing with the inside of her nose the whole time. Kind of made me think that maybe they're not taking possible virus contamination too seriously! They need to bring the food out to you in your car! And tighten up there possible virus contamination protocol. read more

Came here for dinner after a day on the lake with some friends. The restaurant is on the smaller side, and pretty busy, so we had to wait for a table. The food was surprisingly good. The whole shrimp or Ama Ebi was quite nice. The sushi rolls weren't bad eiter. I didn't have high hopes, since Jackson seems like the boondocks. The sake was great as well. read more

Holy maguro madness!! This place was truly fantastic and I think this may be the first time I've ever given 5 stars to a place. (If you look through my other reviews, you'll see I am not one to hesitate in the ventilation of negative reviews....) I was a little skeptical at first looking at the outside and then noticing right away there were no Japanese or other Asian customers upon walking in (sorry for the blatant profiling there, but that's usually a pretty good indicator of quality, especially when it comes to sushi in many cases). I digress.... Despite that, I was impressed with the cool looking interior, the lighting fixtures, the color scheme, the music (Radiohead came on!! Thank you music gods!) and the friendly attitude of the hostess & wait staff. Thankfully they had my favorite Japanese beer: Kirin and the edamame were really good too. Not too salty and easy to pop the beans in your mouth from the shell. I ordered my favorite nigiri sushi: tuna (maguro), salmon and unagi. Plus I got a roll of some sort, but I am sorry I can't remember the name. It had orange tobikko on the outside and I think there was crab/avocado in it. Everything was wonderful, but I was most impressed by the tuna. Good god, in the 10 years I lived in Japan, I don't think I ever had such a thick slice of meaty, red tuna like that. Ok, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration, but I'm trying to drive home a point here: folks, you can't find quality tuna like that very often and the fact that I am finding it in an in-land State---not too mention in the MIDDLE of that in-land State is pretty much a damn miracle. Ugh. When I think about all the Japanese people I know in the Novi-Farmington Hills-Plymouth and Ann Arbor area who are saddened by the closing of Izakaya Sanpei and are frustrated with the poor quality of Sakura, Fumi and Yotsuba, I can't help but think you all need to petition to have Aka Sushi open up a location in that area---or rent a party bus to take you all the way to Jackson and back. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of their sushi, I've had better in other restaurants. I do however, LOVE their Katsu Don and their curry. I have never had any problems with service here, and love the atmosphere in the dining room. My biggest issue with this restaurant, as a parent, is the fact that in both of their unisex bathrooms, there is a lack of changing table. You can't really tell me that parents don't take their children with them when they go out to dine, whether it's a sushi restaurant or not. So, if you happen to come here for a meal and have a small child, either have a changing pad (which most diaper bags come with), or be sure to change your child right before you get here. However, it would be very nice if the owner would install changing tables in their spacious bathrooms. read more

I'm vegetarian so I can only review AKA's veggie items. I love veggie sushi and have known what is decent since I'm from Vancouver, Canada. Aka is the only sushi eatery in Jackson I could recommend to anyone. There aren't many others in this Midwest town but the quality is always pretty consistent here. The servers are attentive, friendly and as quick as allowed by usual busy crowd at mealtimes. You get what you pay for with their better than average ingredients and presentation. The big thing I wish they offered are the hot towels traditionally offered at good sushi establishments. read more

For a simple place such as Jackson, Michigan, Aka is a solid restaurant to visit. The ambient is quite contemporary with some wabi-sabi attempts here and there. I saw a few reviews raving about how fresh their sushi is. As for my experience I'm not sure if it's because I came in on a Tuesday lunch hour or not, but I would consider this place to serve med-grade sushi joint with affordable price. I ordered a spicy tuna roll and an Unagi Bento. The spicy tuna paste is quite good (not spicy at all, if you're wondering), lots of rice--lacking a nice flavors on the sushi rice here, rice is also a bit overcooked but not inedible. Just wish they'd work more on their sushi rice. I've tried multiple rolls from Aka and in general they do not have much of a good combination, too much overcooked rice, spicy options are not spicy, Thin sashimi slices (to match the low price, I assume) The unagi bento is quite a generous portion for $15. It comes with 2 pork gyoza (manufactured-yummy but not authentic), a piece of agadashi tofu (sub-par), edamame (steamed to perfection), tempura (good variety, fresh veggies, shrimp tempura was lackluster), 2 inari (sweet fried tofu pockets filled with sushi rice--store bought tofu--nothing special), 3 pieces of red snapper sashimi (med-fresh), and the main course--grilled eel over rice (unagi). Now now, I get that pictures on their website do not necessarily reflect what's served. BUT they just put 3 thin pieces of over-cooked eel over a bed of rice and I'd have to say it's quite pathetic. The sides are more impressive than the main course! All in all though the bento is definitely a larger, more fulfilling portion and at a reasonable price. I'd prefer to pay a bit more for a higher quality meal, but for a town with not much culinary variants I can understand why it is this way. It's a nice try Aka! Would be interested to see how they improve over time. I'd like to mention that the service was wonderful, both the hosts and waitstaff. I honestly do not get the hype. I would assume those who rave over this have never had actual sushi, because after living in Japan for two years, two stars is me being nice. Two stars is honestly too generous. 1. The rice is not vinegared. Sushi is not the fish, it's the rice. The point of sushi rice opposed to sticky rice is the fact it has vinegar in it. Not sushi. 2. The sushi chef puts wasabi between the rice and fish for nigiri. Here does not. 3. Chopsticks aren't for sushi. You eat with your hands. But, that's more etiquette than it is a review. Soy sauce is also for the fish, not the rice. 4. They overuse cream cheese. I like a California roll, too, but I don't need 8 ounces of cream cheese added to one roll. Fun fact, the Cali roll is an American creation. I would rather make the drive up to East Lansing or Ann Arbor for better Japanese. read more

Sushi is prepared at the bar, in plane view and the whole kitchen is visible but not intrusive. Sushi: delightful and fresh. There are plenty of non-cream cheese options, cooked and raw options. Normally I would give this place 4 stars but I am going to give it 5 because we are talking about Jackson Michigan. I would be please with this place in Ann Arbor but in Jackson it really is a gem. The inside is very sleek and modern. Exceptionally clean and there are a ton of great windows. The view in is much better than the view out but what can ya do. The sushi was moderately priced for sushi. A spicy tuna roll I believe is $6 and their fancier specialty rolls were $14-$16. The rolls aren't huge but they also aren't small. My dad got one of their noodle bowls. He is the type that doesn't let his mash potatoes touch his green beans and thinks guacamole is unnecessary (how are we even related!?). So the fact that he really enjoyed it and later said "would you be offended if your mom and I came here without you?" Is a pretty big compliment. read more
