Disgusting! Sat down table was sticky, that egg roll tastes like it was fried in oil that was a year old, got the Szechuan beef super sweet and tastes nothing like Szechuan, and gross looking. The server looked like she was embarrassed of the food, but she was very nice. I lived in china for 5 years this restaurant is an embarrassment to Chinese cuisine. Apparently the owners retired and it has new owners. The service is slow... the food is nowhere near as good as before. If you want anything special that isn't on the lunch menu you can't get it as lunch (they do not offer beef or shrimp at lunch). The chicken fried rice my husband ordered was made with breaded chicken. We used to look forward to dining there because the food was just sooo good. Have frequented this restaurant for years. Yes, there are new owners and there may be some changes in the recipes, but hands down the best Chinese food in the Jackson area. The owners bend over backwards to try and please their customers. The food is hot, good, and fairly priced. A great dine-in experience if you have a taste for Chinese food. I started with hot and sour soup. The immediate flavor was of beef. There was little sour to it. This version was OK, but I would have added orange juice to the base had I taken some home. Next, I ordered crab Rangoon's. The balance of filling versus wrap was good. They were a bit overdone, but I prefer them that way. I could not eat the sweet and sour because there was a distinct taste of fish. I know there isn't fish in sweet-and-sour sauce so I continued to taste it thinking it was me. It wasn't me. It was the sauce. I have no idea why that taste was there. It shouldn't be. Next, I had the princess tofu served, medium hot spice. It was a lunch portion, and I still took some home. The tofu was large chunks but perfectly cooked. The rest of the dish was good also. For garnish, they added whole uncooked peanuts which added a nice crunch. I took home an order of Kung Po chicken, medium spice. There is more chicken than vegetables in the dish. The chicken is softened, which I don't usually like that texture, but this is not overly done. The service was excellent and the atmosphere is typical, and appears clean. All in all it was okay and as expected for Asian food. read more

Quite possibly the best Chinese food I've ever had. I've lived in major metro area Chicago and Phoenix and I'm very pleasantly surprised that this food rivals anything I've had before and it's right in our back yard. The crab Rangoons have a delicious subtle garlic flavor mixed with a little green onion that adds just enough to make it unique. The egg rolls are crunchy and cooked to perfection with fantastic flavor that hits the spot. The generals chicken also perfectly crunchy on the outside with moist chicken on the inside drenched in a sauce with the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. The Mongolian beef a staple, you cannot go wrong with tender thin sliced beef again cooked just right. The side of fried rice won't raise any eyebrows but will serve as a solid accompaniment. All this with fantastic prompt service and a great environment. I don't normally go out of my way to do a write up but this place earned it. I will be back often and won't dare to eat Chinese food anywhere else. read more

Husband and I have gone to Yen King for years, but haven't been for the last 2 years and I wanted to get food after coming home from vacation. Husband went and got us Yen King yesterday and the sweet and sour chicken, egg rolls and potstickers were bland (NO FLAVOR). Fried rice was not fried enough, more steamed than fried. My who never complain about food even said that the food was bland, $50 down the drain. This morning talking with my husband I said I wonder if they have new management or changed owners and after looking it up, YES they did. I've came here a few times over the years and every time I do I like it more and more. The restaurant and quaint and staff is always so friendly. They have great Japanese beers and saki. The menu is big and everything is DELICIOUS. Last night we had the sweetest woman take care of us. She put our party of 5 in a big room and was so prompt and attentive. Although it had a great Chinese restaurant atmosphere with the decor and interior looked decent. However during my visit, it proved to be progressively disappointing. First of all, the lunch menu was very limited options for vegans and when I ask to have dishes replace the meat with tofu, they charge an extra $1 for that, it's a bad, unfortunate sign. Usually Chinese and Asian restaurants are very accommodating with vegetarian and vegan options. Secondly, I also ask them to omit fish sauce, oyster sauce, and MSG which they do have in all their dishes, so vegans beware when you order here. Thirdly, the quality of the food was very subpar. It just didn't do it for me flavor-wise and if they have to rely on MSG to enhance the taste, that's very unfortunate. I've been to many restaurants that removed the MSG and still tasted delicious, but it was instead salty, greasy and lacked wholesome substance. Lasts the quantity, the amount of food given was not impressive either. They charge so much for what little food they present to you. Overall, across the board I was not impressed with this place. Chinese restaurants are not my favorite places and Yen King helped remind me why. read more

Yen King is our go to for Chinese in Jackson. It's one of the few Chinese places that still put fruit and veggies in their Sweet and Sour Chicken (hubby's favorite ). I got the General Tsao Chicken with white rice and he got Szechuan Tofu with fried rice - both adding vegetables (+$3), an order of crab rangoon and a small egg drop soup. For nearly $40 I'd hoped for more than soggy, chewy chicken and flavorless (other than hot/spicy) tofu and veggies. The tsao sauce was good. What a pleasant surprise. Pulling up, I was concerned by the lack of cars. But I was assured it was great Chinese. Ordered crab rangoon, egg rolls, wonton soup, scezuan shrimp and beef with broccoli, added spice. All of it was pretty good. The only thing that could improve would be the amount of crab in the rangoon but for 5 dollars, it was expected. I would definitely pay more for higher quality. After reading some of the great reviews, I was eager to try this place. I ordered orange chicken, moderately spiced. I got no spice at all. I got crunchy batter with almost no chicken, just crunch. What tiny bit of chicken there was in it, was overcooked and dry. I ate 4 bites, hoping it would get better. It didn't. I am sure the waiter noticed but said nothing. He just brought me the check. The service is great, food is always hot, fresh and high quality and prices are reasonable. I have not found any other Chinese place as good as Yen King in any state or in Jackson. Yenking is a restaurant near where my parents used to work. I have fond memories of meeting them here for lunch or picking up lunch here and taking it to their offices. This wasn't the first place I've had chinese food, or the closest to where I lived, but I still think this is the best chinese food I've had in Michigan or anywhere. Yenking is in an old Bill Knapps building, but has since been painted red. Interestingly enough, Bill Knapps wanted a larger space so they built a new Bill Knapps right next to the old Bill Knapps. But now Bill Knapps is no longer, but there are two Bill Knappsian buildings right next to each other. I think that Yenking has the most delicious food. I often enjoyed the different dishes. They have excellent sauces and flavors. The food is always fresh and very tasty. I really like the egg drop soup. The egg rolls are pretty standard. The menu has the full range of a traditional American Chinese menu. I have never been disappointed by a meal here and I can't wait to get back and have it again sometime. read more

I don't understand the hype over yen king. It's good, it's just not $15 a plate good. Showed up at sat down a couple minutes before the lunch specials ended, by the time the server came to us, she said it wasn't lunch anymore which would have saved $7 a plate for the same amount of food.
