My wife and I arrived for a late lunch at approximately 3pm on a week day. There were only two other cars in the parking lot. We were the only customers there. We were seated by the greeter/server next to what must have been the cleaning supplies area. Not much ambience, but not too off-putting. About midway through our meals, my wife discovered in her food was an inch long strand of metal that may have come from a steel-wool scrubbing pad, but I'm not sure exactly. I brought this to the server's attention and he apologized, but offered neither to replace the meal or a price reduction. This is disgusting and uncalled for. We have been coming to Yen King for over 30 years, and it is always good. Great food cept the fish, we ordered sweet & slur fish and it was awful. Tough to keep fish fresh when likely no one is ordering. Every dish that I have had here has been very good. Service has been good the times I've eaten in the restaurant. Take out is usually ready very quickly. As a native of Jackson, I ordered Yenking frequently. Tucked away behind the Holiday Inn and 127, this place was a well-kept secret for all but the initiated. Going back today, I find that the allure of a hidden gem in my teen years didn't hold up now. I ordered the sesame chicken, which was incredibly stringy and tough. They only gave me one packet of soy sauce and duck sauce for a large dinner combo. The sesame sauce was quite bland and nondescript. It looks great on the inside. Absolutely the worst Chinese food we've have eaten so far. As we were being seated the table next to us were mad and paid for there drinks and left that should of been out que to follow. I asked our server a few questions about a item on the menu since it was our first time there and all he said was yes or no very rude like I was bothering him or something. Service was horrible waited 45 min for our food to come and it was COLD. I was nervous to give it back I didn't now how long it would take to come back to me My Husband watch him put it in the microwave and walk away from it. We timed it 8 mins later and it was warm. I would actually probably go a 3.5 if I could... but I can't and my 8 year old LOVED this place and she wanted me to give it a 5 star~ so we compromised. We got: * Hot & Sour Soup: Nice flavor, good balance between the tang of vinegar and some heat of whatever creates that heat. I didn't see the mushrooms or tofu that a traditionalist would expect (me) and it definitely had chicken (odd). BUT the flavor was good and they had the fried won-tons I like to put in it. Despite it being non-traditional, the flavor was good and I would definitely order again. * Egg Roll: Fine but had an odd spice going on... my daughter LOVED it. I would probably skip this next time but I didn't hate it. Just average. (Course, my daughter won't let me skip it the next time). **Important note: both of the above were a la carte which is kind of surprising for Chinese~ they only offered tea & fried rice as part of their "dinner combo" so everything basically costs. It adds up.**** Pepper Steak: This the one Chinese dish my daughter loves. And she LOVED this one. She said the beef wasn't hard to chew yet not so soft that it was mushy~ a perfect balance. She also liked that there was a lot of beef in it (cuz she, of course, hates the veggie and eats around them). Also she thought the sauce was awesome. I didn't taste it so I can't give you an adult review but it DID look good and generally, she does a decent job of calling things so I think you can trust her review. General Tsao Chicken: This one was me. I admit, I am "Chasing Amy" when it comes to General Tsao as an old restaurant (now out of business) taught me the sauce should burn and the broccoli should be the fresh/counterpoint to that burn. The sauce & broccoll should work in harmony if done right. Nowadays, it is hard to find General Tsaos that even comes with broccoli, or that is lightly fried so that alone is a "win" from my perspective. But the sauce was more of a thick, toothpaste/glue viscosity. I also had to ask for Sirrachi to create any form of heat in it (what is it with heat & Chinese restaurants nowadays? They have no idea what HEAT means). The chicken itself was very crappy in terms of texture with lots of tendons. So, no I wouldn't get this dish again...YET I still give them points for: having the chicken fried, and for having broccoli in it even if there was no heat (unfortunately there never is nowadays) and using a poor quality of chicken. Service: Very good. Efficient. Nice. Well-done. Portion Size: On the small size given the lack of egg roll/ soup/ etc... so you are paying about $12-$14 a plate for just the entree and you are unlikely to take anything home. Not horrible but the general expectations for Chinese food is value~ it ain't that. It is not a rip-off, it is not a deal it is just adequate. Summary: High points for Hot & Sour Soup & Pepper Steak, Average for Egg Roll and Low-Average for the General Tsao's.... like I said, I'd have gone 3.5 if I could but between the daughter and the service, I rounded up. read more

Yenking has always had good food, but their support for veterans is lacking. The road in front of Yenking was renamed from Holiday Inn Drive to Bondsteel Drive a few years back. The road was named for Jim Bondsteel; a Vietnam veteran and recipient of the Medal of Honor. The township also created a memorial/park honoring all of Jackson County's Medal of Honor recipients. The memorial is right across the street from Yenking. A couple hundred veterans and their families attended the unveiling ceremony. This included a fair number of people who were either elderly, disabled, or both. Yenking closed it's parking lot to those attending the ceremony. As close parking is scarce in that area, a lot of veterans that have a tough time walking long distances were forced to walk long distances. It is their parking lot and they have a right to control who parks there. It is my appetite and I have a right to never darken their doorway again. I hope others will follow suit. read more

I've eaten here one before and wasn't impressed but I thought I'd give it another chance... First of all, the prices are ridiculous. I ordered the sweet & sour shrimp with white rice and an egg roll and an order of crab rangoon and paid almost$20! I assumed it came with rice and an egg roll, as most Chinese meals do; but I was wrong. They charged me for a tiny egg roll that tarred like it was freezer burned and was awful. It tasted like all the ingredients, including way too many spices, had been good process and stuffed. It was awful. The crab rangoons were a joke. There were 4, bite sized pieces with cream cheese and nothing else inside and I paid $4 for them. The entree was a little better, but not overly impressive. The portion size was mediocre as far as Chinese restaurants go. The sauce was so sugary and tart it was almost too rich to eat and the shrimp was almost all batter with tiny shrimp that were a joke. I've had worse, but not much; and for the price, it was unacceptable. I gave them a second chance and will not give them a third. read more

Yen King still has the best Chinese food in Jackson but the value for the dollar has gotten less in recent years. The high prices used to be justified by the large portions that were served. While some items still give you this value most portion sizes have been cut drastically. The worst value is the kids meal, $5 for two tiny pices of chicken and a tiny portion of fries. I won't be ordering for my kids from the kids meals again, instead will order dinner items to share. read more
