I finally found some time to go and try this new place and I loved it, it's small and they only serve sushi, but the atmosphere is so nice and stuff very friendly. I went with my husband and my 2 yr old son. They don't have kids menu but they had a note at the door about kids dish - chicken tempura with rice at 7.95 a little pricey for a 2 yr old but solves the problem if they don't want to eat sushi, and pretty much everybody had their kids with them. New, quiet, welcoming environment. The sushi is fresh and is prepared VERY quickly! Beautiful arrangement on the plate as well. My husband and I are vegans, and they had a lot of variety for us for great prices. They even had a shitake roll which is not easy to find. Hands Down..The best sushi place to go to in the area. As part of my job, I drive all over Northern VA, MD, and DC. Now there are places that are way fancier than AKA with good sushi. Don't let the "strip mall" look fool you. Once you step in, you are immediately greeted and seated. My secret to gauging any restaurant is to order one dish I know all of them will have, and pending the quality of the dish determines if I stay and order further. I use the avocado salad for all of my sushi restaurants. If they don't have one or its not good, I go. AKA has the freshest avocados every time!! A sauce that my friend has even tried to recreate. He thinks hes done it..but only in his mind. I typically order the salad, one of their signature rolls, (Va Beach Roll, or the New Volcano) and a smaller roll like spicy tuna or salmon. With fresh sushi, you never taste the fish. Everything here is always fresh. They are very attentive to your needs, and if you are a regular like me, they always know what my start up order will be. I try to steer all my friends and family to this little hidden away gem. Also when you leave..every time the whole wait staff and even the chefs stop what they are doing to say bye!! It's surprising to find such great sushi at a strip mall in manassas but I'm so glad it's there! We moved to the neighborhood and despite loving Japanese food (lived in Hawaii, been to Japan 4xs, have done some varsity level Japanese cooking at home), we didn't think of trying Aka Sushi. I mean a strip mall in Bristow, right? Wrong! This sushi . . the night we tried it . . ROCKS! 1) Delicious. 2) Beautiful. 3) Generous size (In fact the chef 'forgot' part of our order, which we were grateful for because we had ordered way too much.) and 4) Creative. I rarely order special, combination-type rolls (which always seem gimmicky and over-priced). But wow! The few we ordered were inspired. I look forward to trying more of them. Came here with the girlfriend one night for a late night meal. I told the sushi chef make me whatever you want because when it comes to sushi, neither the girlfriend or I are very picky. He made us a shrimp tempura dish that had seared tuna on top, which was phenomenal. They also made a roll named after a chef that I didn't see anywhere on the menu called the Kenny Roll which had a combination of various fish that was probably the best piece of sushi I've ever had. Ate here today for lunch on a whim. I really feel like this experience was more a 3 and a half star experience. The things they got right were really right but there were a couple of misses. Pros first: everyone was really friendly. The spicy tuna roll and the Captain crunch roll were delicious. I almost ordered a second helping of the captain crunch roll (tempura shrimp, masago and cucumber) except for. Cons: once my food arrived I was never checked with, my water was never refilled. The tamago was flavorless and the rice it was on was inadequate for the size of the egg. In sum. I'd give them another shot. The service was decent, and the food was okay. Speed in which they served us was good. They also gave us a small taste of various pickles for free, which was nice of them (Thus the extra star instead of the two I really think this deserved). However, I don't plan on going to them again. As a huge sushi fan, I've been to many different places, and understand some level of pricing when it comes to sushi. We ordered the Sashimi boat, which was $80.95. The beet flower was fancy, but we thought the experience was overall... well, "Meh, I've experienced better." The amount of fish we got wasn't much. The fish was fresh-tasting, and we did enjoy them for what they were; but if they weren't good quality at that price, I'd feel very angry. After going to AKA Sushi for two years it's about time I leave a review. Let me start off by saying they have the best staff, everyone is very nice and welcoming. The chef are always smiling and have the BEST specials. The sushi is always super fresh and they have a LOT of options. The service is also extremely fast, it doesn't matter if it's pickup or dine in. The most I've ever had to wait for my sushi was 15 minuets! Big fan of their salmon sashimi and for lunch I always get the sushi deluxe. It's worth every penny. Highly recommend checking them out!!! read more

Aka just recently opened, and I danced a jig when I discovered a sushi place so close. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect; the exterior is quite unassuming. They are at the far end of the shopping center next to a hair salon. I believe the prior occupant was a coffee shop. The decor is simple and perhaps plain, but it is clean and bright. I think we surprised them a little coming in at 8pm an hour before their close, but service was gracious and friendly. As I mentioned I wasn't sure what to expect, and the menu is simple. Sushi. No udon or ramen dishes. No tempura or terriyaki. I was a little concerned as our son is not quite as hip to sushi as we are, but he was brave and went out on a limb. My wife and I shared the Aka Special B with an extra California roll. The meals come with miso soup and salad. The kiddo ordered a California roll and spicy tuna roll and soup to start. Let me tell you there's nothing wrong with specializing if you do one thing and do it well. The miso was delicious, if I could make a decent dashi I would do this more often at home, but as it is I usually have to go out to find good miso. The salad was typical with the ginger dressing, but I like this as there was definitely a nice nutty flavor to it. Peanut? Tahini? I'm not sure, but I would eat it all the time. Everything was brought out promptly; I would attribute this to being the only customers, but I feel like the service would have been equally as attentive regardless. The sushi came and oh what a treat. There is no doubt that the chef knows his art. Everything was beautifully arranged on a large plate from which we all shared. The Special was an assortment of sashimi, sushi, and a couple of rolls with plenty of each. Everything was just right. The fish was not cold though clearly stored at temperatures to prevent spoiling. The cuts were good, and fish was excellent quality. The flavor of each piece of meat was readily apparent. The rice was was not too sticky but tender and maintaining its texture. There is no doubt they know how to prepare the food properly. Our son actually ended up trying some of the salmon, scallop, and yellow-tail sashimi with his rolls and could not stop raving about how good it was. High praise from a picky teenager!! All in all we were all most satisfied with our experience and hope others will go and support this wonderful little restaurant. read more

Who knew such a good sushi restaurant would be in Nokesville, VA out of all places! I ended up moving right next door for a little bit and fell in love with this place. Their rolls are pretty good but I ended up craving the TUNA HOUSE ROLL all the time (don't worry, I'm not preggo). If you love tuna, get this roll. When I found out I had to move, I ate this roll as many times as my budget allowed. I unfortunately have yet to find a good sushi place in Tampa/Sarasota. read more

They have some creative rolls here and a wide selection. Their sashimi was well cut and had wasabi under the fish, a trademark of a good sushi place. We ordered a ton of sushi and it was reasonably priced - $85 for 3 people. We thought they messed up a couple of the rolls based on what was served, but it was all good. I'm taking a star off because we sat next to the bathroom and there were several strong whiffs of flatulence that couldn't be avoided. Sit near the entrance to be safe. read more

Sushi was good. Service was horrible. My friend and I entered the place around 9:15pm and it was completely empty - but it seemed like they wanted to shutdown and go home (even though the posted hours were until 10pm). The older servers were trying but didn't speak English - the younger server who did had a serious attitude because it seemed like she wanted to go out and party instead of being at the restaurant - she made it clear that the kitchen will be closing soon and they close at 10 so we should be out by then. Delicious sushi! I used to live in Arlington, and Edo sushi was absolutely the best. When I moved to Woodbridge, there were never any good sushi places (I simply gave up and would only eat sushi while in Fairfax after work). I was worried that I would still have to stick to Fairfax when I moved to Manassas, but I quickly found Aka Sushi and was hooked! This is a takeout review: To start, I am a big sashimi fan. I want the fish pure, no rice or other embellishments that you get with sushi. The first thing about the sashimi here: the slices of fish are too big. I know, weird thing to complain about, but you want nice, chopstick portion, one bite pieces. I ended up cutting the pieces of fish up on my sashimi deluxe platter. Again, odd thing to complain about - I get twice the fish! But if I dined in the restaurant and didn't have a knife.... Second thing: DO NOT get the toro (fatty tuna). When I placed my order I requested to see the fish. I mean, this fish is expensive! They told me they don't have it on display because it is so expensive. OK. What I didn't realize, and did once I got home with my order, is that they freeze the toro to keep it from spoiling, I guess. There is no way I want frozen toro. These guys should either serve it on a limited basis (on the weekend maybe) or not serve it at all. And they should definitely not charge the 12.00 or so price they do for 3 pieces. Last complaints/suggestions: 1) I don't want kale leaves as a garnish. I'd rather have shiso which I love to eat with my fish. 2) I wish the restaurant had fresh wasabi as an option. Other than all of the above I like the place. The people are very friendly. I just wish they were more like Matsu Sushi in Centreville. That is my very favorite place for sashimi and they have fresh wasabi if you ask :) . But it is too far away for me now for a take-out dinner. read more
