Steve and his team did fabulous work. Took down an old tree that was 40 feet in height and 30 inches in diameter. Thought it would take all day but they completed the job in 3.5 hours. Rotten tree and they cleaned up all the debris and there was a lot to clean up and haul away. Now the yard is clean and looks like a tree was never there. Amazing work! read more

Steve and his team saved the day. I had a large branch on the verge of falling on my garage/power lines that we hadn't noticed splitting. Called Steve late in the evening, he came the next morning with his crew and took care of it in addition to a bunch of other work that needed to get done. They did it fast and professional. They had one small accident (broken deck board) but they discounted the price for it. They took care of everything in 2 hours. Highly recommend. read more

I had 1 large tree and 3 large bushes removed at my home in logan square. Excellent communication, service, and price. I would recommend AJAX. i asked for prices from 4 other companies. AJAX was the first to respond and had the best price. I'm very happy with my decision. read more

It went great and they were amazingly fast! Called on a Friday and the work was scheduled for noon Monday and totally finished by 2:20 thanks to the fact that they had 3 people who were incredibly skilled getting the job done. It was pretty amazing to watch them make the cuts in just the right way so that the tree limbs fell right where they wanted them between obstacles. They were professional and friendly and did an amazing job. Would definitely use them again. read more

Steve was responsive and prompt. He really knows his trees and is very conscious of the overall aesthetic of the yard. I would highly recommend him read more

Another amazing review for Steve. He came out and took a stump out that was below grade that the city did a bad job of taking care of. I had a bit of a mushroom farm going, but it looks amazing now. Steve was here early for his time slot and ground down further than he said he would to get everything out. He was patient with my questions because I was nervous about the stump being in the parkway and hitting gas and water lines, and just did an awesome job. I would recommend this guy to anyone! read more

My husband and I just purchased a house that had two old trees in front of it. I looked on YELP for a good person to call and I came across Steve's Stump Removal. We called Steve and he came the next day to give us an estimate. He's very knowledgeable and very easy to talk to. You don't feel pressured into doing things and he gives you lots of options. We scheduled an appointment and everything went perfectly. He made sure we were 100% satisfied before he left. Our house looks so much better now without the trees in front of it!!! THANKS Steve!!!!! read more

Steve and the Ajax team did an excellent job. He explained to me what he was going to do with suggestions as to how I might follow up and gave me advise on a few other issues I had. He is knowledgeable, was fast, and cleaned everything up. His pricing is competitive and I would highly recommend him for any tree work you might need. So refreshing to have great expert and professional service. read more

Job summary: one (1) tree removal and one (1) tree trimming on an enclosed patio On 10/13 I initially contact Steve and his wife for a project at my townhouse in Lincoln Park. They were both incredibly friendly and responsive, so we immediately scheduled an assessment for the following morning, 10/14. Steve showed up right on time, explained my options, and gave me a quote for $750, which was a very reasonable price compared to other estimates I'd seen online. We then scheduled the work for 10/18. Again, Steve and his team showed up right on time and gave me a call 30 mins before arrival. They had blocked off three hours for the work and finished in under two hours. The whole project was done five days after I'd initially contacted them- wow! There were two large (~30') poplar trees on my back patio, which is surrounded by a high brick wall. The tree closer to my home was ripping up the roof and blocking natural light, so I had it removed. The second tree needed to be trimmed since it was unbalanced from growing into the other tree, had dead branches, and had lower branches that would eventually interfere with the brick wall and townhouse. This job was a more complicated than a typical yard removal/trim since the only access to my patio was through my living room. They were able to perform all of the work through a combination of using the side alley and my patio. All areas, including the street and sidewalk, were completely cleaned afterwards. They also did a great job managing the falling branches to avoid any damage to utility lines, my HVAC unit and my patio. I HIGHLY recommend Ajax Tree Service. They were incredibly professional, knowledge and skilled. read more

Ajax totally deserves all the 5 star ratings. Ryan and his team were great to work with. I really appreciated their diligence in cleaning up the debris from all the tree trimming. Reasonably priced, on time and really efficient. read more

I called AJAX Tree Service to have a medium size tree removed in my back yard. We had a ton of power/cable/phone lines mixed into the branches of the tree and the tree just seemed like a huge hazard so we needed it removed. I called their main number and right away booked an appointment for them to come out and give me an estimate. Compared to other companies their price was very affordable for the size of tree and how difficult it would be to get removed. They were right on time for the estimate. Talked about the procedure and gave me a reasonable estimate. What sold me was they were able to get the tree out so quickly. Many other companies said it would be anywhere between 1-2 weeks and based on the weather. I liked that they knew which day they could come out and was only a few days later after the estimate. They removed our tree with no issues and took all the mess with them, left nothing behind. In the end, they had incredible communication and they were very friendly. Couldn't be more happy with their service. Great job guys! I will definitely refer you to anyone that needs tree removal. read more

After posting my initial review, I received a call back from Steve. He scheduled a time to come back to finish the work. He showed up on time, finished the job and cleaned up. read more

Called on a Thursday, he checked out the stump and gave me an estimate over the phone while I was at work on Friday, and then came back on Saturday to complete the job. I was stuck in traffic when they arrived Saturday, but they were very understanding and just finishing the job just as I pulled up. Doesn't get easier than that! I learned that Ajax is a family business spanning generations, and I could tell by their great work that they definitely take pride in their business. read more

Awesome family team! I called on Thursday, got a quote that evening - tree down and backyard swept and power blown on Sat 8am. I paid cash. Highly recommended for tree take down. read more

I had a tricky tree extraction and had contacted three tree specialists, recommended via word of mouth, and each turned me down or didn't respond. I called Ajax Monday morning; within an hour I had a price and agreement for the work to be done the following day. It was not an easy job, because the root ball had to be removed by hand, with a pick ax, from a small space on a narrow city lot. No damage to other trees or wood-sided raised bed. Crew showed up on time, polite, left work site tidy. Bravo! Highly recommend. read more

Great job by Steve and the team! From the moment we called, through the quote and the job, Steve and Andrea were on top of it. They were highly responsive and communicated very clearly, walking us through the options and thoroughly discussing just what we needed and wanted to get done. Could not have been a better experience. The morning of the job they were on time, quick and efficient and very careful with all of the plantings we have in the yard and around the house. And the cleanup was perfect! We highly recommend Steve and Ajax if you have any tree trimming or removal work to be done. read more

We gave a down payment and the work was never performed, still haven't received the down payment. Not very professional. The work was to be performed in October 2017, still haven't received our money back. Can't give any rating read more

I had high hopes for Steve and his company as he seems very knowledgeable and was very nice (that's why my husband gave him an extra star) but they did not come through for us. I had several guys come out to give us quotes on removing a tree. When I initially met with Steve I felt very confident in his experience and even though he wasn't the lowest quote I still decided to go with him. However, he had many big requests in order to remove the tree such as blocking off an entire cul-de-sac with towing enforced and asking a neighboring building to have their parking lot emptied so that Steve could have his truck in there to lower the branches onto. While we were unable to get the street blocked we did manage to get half of the street by having our neighbors help to park on that side of the street which was a lot of extra work on our part. We were finally all set for a Sunday and then it rained so it was cancelled and then he just NEVER called us back to reschedule! After a week I called and he answered and said yeah lets get this tree down! I'm gonna do what I can to do this for you. Which helped restore some confidence in me BUT quickly faded when I didn't hear from him yet again. I would call and there would be no answer. So, I had my husband call (from his phone) and Steve answered and said again, "We'll do what we gotta do to get this tree down! Let me call you back once I take a look at my schedule." No call. My husband called again and Steve said, "I'm gonna come out there tomorrow afternoon to get another look and see if there is a different/easier way to get this tree down." He never showed. I called him and my husband called him and NO answer. So, I had my neighbor call him and what do you know he picked up and said, "oh I'm finishing a job that is taking longer than we expected. I will stop by after." NO SHOW! Not even an update call. Why did he keep saying, "let's get this tree down!"?! All he needed to say was hey I'm sorry but I decided this isn't the job for me. Or, I don't want this job anymore. Why string us along?! We were way too patient with him as this was drawn out for over a month and a half! I called one company who said, "I'm not surprised to hear that. I've heard other complaints about him." I ended up going with a different company who actually had the lowest quote and had the complete opposite experience (please check out my other reviews for that company). This new company was amazing. They were incredibly professional, quick to respond, came out here within 4 days and had the tree down in 4 hours!! They didn't need a road blocked off or had any crazy special requests. They didn't need anything from us at all! All of the difficulties that Steve had mentioned they didn't even flinch at or mention to us. They came in and got the tree down without any issues. We were so impressed that we actually asked them to do some additional trimming on some other trees while they were there. I would highly recommend you NOT waste your time with Ajax. He seemed like a great guy but his company unfortunately is very unprofessional and did not follow through with the job. Overall Ajax: 1) When you answer the phone be professional and state your company and who you are... such as... "Hello! Ajax Tree Service this is your name how can I help you?.... NOT just , "uhh..hello?" 2) Horrible Customer Service. Return peoples phone calls in a timely manner. You are in a service industry. Provide quality professional service. 3) Communicate! Be honest with your potential customers. If you don't want a job then say that! If you need to reschedule or won't be able to meet an appointment give the customer an update. Don't just avoid phone calls. read more

5 stars are not enough for these guys! I needed evergreens removed that had taken a beating from last years polar vortex. Called Steve and he gave me an extremely reasonable quote. These guys showed up promptly today and I seriously could not believe how quickly they work. They even used a blower to clean up the leaves in front of my house. Dont even bother looking anywhere else. Ajax rules! read more

I never write reviews, but Steve and his team deserve to be recognized for their amazing work! I used Steve about 5 years ago to cut down a humongous tree in my backyard that I was afraid would fall down on my rooftop deck and pergola with any bad storm. His team was swift, professional and very reasonably priced. So when I needed to have more trees trimmed (actually the rental property next to us whose trees were extending onto my yard/ house) I immediately called Steve. He came out (even on Sunday afternoon!) and already Monday morning the work is completed! Professional and swift. Cleaned up everything- my property and the neighbors. Great price and so nice! read more

What a great company! Ryan came out promptly to give us an estimate. He gave us a window of when he'd show up and stuck to it!! Not too many contractors do that. He also said he'd call me later and let me know when he could come out and take down a plum tree. He called when he said he would and he and Steve showed up promptly today to take it down. Ryan and Steve are such professional, courteous and kind young men. They gave us a great price and explained how to get rid of the remaining stump since their grinding machine couldn't fit inside our fence. Great job and great people! I even gave them a hug because they are so nice! Thank you again to Ryan and Steve! read more

Ajax responds quickly and provides excellent service! We had a tree with limbs that had fallen after a large storm. Ajax came out the same day to provide a quote and assess the damages. They returned the following day to remove all limbs and cut the tree back. Fast, reliable service! Highly recommend. read more

These are the best guys out there! I contacted a few people for quick quotes. Steve and his team got back to me right away - the first ones actually. They came out the next day and he quoted the project right then and there. We went with Steve and his team because they are insured, their prices were right, and it's a family business and I'd rather my money support a Chicagoland family business. We had 1 old pine tree removed, another pine trimmed and a neighbor's tree that was reaching into our yard trimmed. The work was done quickly and they cleaned EVERYTHING! You could even barely notice a tree had been taken down that afternoon. A great business to work with. read more

I called Ajax Tree Service out twice. Once to remove a large tree branch that was suspended on our power lines which Steve removed like it was nothing at all. I was so impressed with Steve and his charming wife and the reasonable prices they quoted me that I had called them in a second time to remove a very large tree in my back yard. Not an easy job to say the least as the tree was right up against my garage and the cable and power lines were in and under it. Well they took care of taking down that tree and did it professionally and quickly. The 40 foot tree was quickly trimmed, cut down, chipped and hauled away in about 4 hours. They cleaned my back yard, the neighbors courtyard and the alley where there trucks and equipment were sitting for those 4 hours. They are very hard working, honest, reasonably priced and very friendly. I am so glad that I called on Ajax Tree Service to take care of this problem for me and I will never use anyone else. I highly recommend them. Great job guys................Thank You. read more

AJAX is lying. This is the exact behavior they have demonstrated over the last 2 months... excuses and lies. There were trees in the middle of our property line, shared with our neighbors. Collectively our two households hired AJAX tree service. They came out and removed the bulk of four trees, but left the stumps because the stumps were grown into the old chain link fence. They wrote on our work order that they would come back and remove the stumps after the chain link fence was removed as it was included in the scope of work. Ajax asked for payment at the time of the first visit. Unfortunately, we were dumb enough to take AJAX at their word and paid up front for all the services because they were willing to write on the receipt they would come back out. We have this in writing. Our two households split the cost, this was a shared expense. We had the fence removed after Ajax's first visit then called them to schedule the follow up work. At first they took our calls and even scheduled a time to come out. They were a no show for the first couple appointments. Their reasons were weather "the ground was too soggy", their daughter was in a car accident, and then their equipment was broken. We were patient through repeated no shows and continued to follow up to try to get them to finish the job. After 2 months they just stopped returning our calls. We had to hire a new company to complete the work. We are in the process of suing them. read more

Steve and crew did a great job. Nothing fancy, just some basic tree trimming. Felt they told me the basics of what needed done and didn't attempt to up-sell. Also were able to come out on a Saturday in the rain. They were prompt and faster than I expected. Cleaned up everything afterwards as well. read more

***Great service***, very satisfied with Ajax. They came out on the day we requested despite the rainy conditions. They were knowledgeable and very patient as we were indecisive about how much we wanted to get done. They removed every tree down to the stump, and left our property clean without a branch in sight. Their pricing was also very reasonable. I would highly recommend AJAX and will definitely use them again! read more

Steve arrived earlier than the appointment by a few minutes and started right away on removing the tree that we discussed over the phone. His price was reasonable and he got the job done quickly without any problems. After the job he cleaned up the area nicely. I would highly recommend using this company. had an estimate appointment scheduled for 8:30am, he woke me up, calling at 6:20am to tell me it was 35degrees out, so he did not feel like standing out in the cold, he rescheduled the next day for 8:30 am... he never showed up, i called and and left a message... never responded, never called back read more

Perfectly nice people. Called for an estimate, they came out, gave an estimate, I agreed, they said they'd call back with a time slot. No call. I must have called them 15 times over a 10 day period, left messages each time. No reply. Once I spoke to a human being, who was (again) really nice, promised they'd call back...nothing. I have no idea if they do good tree work or not, but I know that they are unprofessional. read more

Steve and his team are terrific. We had a large tree limb crack and was left hanging on another limb extending into the street. Ajax responded immediately and Steve did a masterful job of bringing down the limb piece by piece so that no damage was caused to cars or metal fencing. Problem solved! read more

Ajax removed four large trees from our property earlier today and did a phenomenal job! They were great to deal with, their work was thorough and professional, and fast - started work by about 9, and done by 1, thanks to the sizable crew they brought. All stumps ground, and all debris removed. Steve even brought a large piece of plywood to patch a section of fence that had to be removed (one of the trees was growing through it).
