Not a total surprise as I suspect most of its custom is at night for dinner. The service, as it should be I guess when we're the only diners, was efficient and friendly without being intrusive. For food we decided to go with the chef recommendation of the chilli paneer (marinated cottage cheese chunks in a sweet chilli sauce with some onions, red and green peppers) as a starter and three curries: lamb korma, butter chicken and gosht chicken for our mains. All were excellent and tasty. Very high quality food we thought. Portion-wise the starter was a very generous size. The curries were a little less generous and were served in quite small, though deep bowls. Having said that each curry came with a number of good-sized chunks of meat. Along with our naan and shared rice dish we were suitably stuffed at the end of our meal. Price-wise the food is quite over-priced for Indian food but with the 40% discount from toptable on food offers reasonable value for money. If you want to have some excellent Indian food don't overlook Green Chilli in Hammersmith - it may surprise you.

It gives the place a slightly NCP feel which I'm guessing they don't really want. Other than that, happy to report, the welcome is just as friendly, the menu as reassuring and the Cobra as cool. Sure, they've added a bit of panache. I ordered a green tandoori chicken sizzling thing which was slightly different from the normal tandoori offering. In fact it didn't quite work for me. A little dry ad the coriander marinade giving it a slightly odd look, but tasty enough. Prawn puri was delicately spiced and generous and the puri bit was lovely and puffed. Our other main I must confess we can't remember how they described it. But it was a generous portion of chicken breast meet and a very good creamy sauce which we mopped up with excellent naan, puffy and slightly burnished, just as it should be. All in all a great example of a good old local curry house in an area full of hot competition. It continues to thrive for those who like the friendly service, the familiar menu and the comfy surroundings. And the After Eights with the bill.

I'm a chicken tandoori kind of girl myself, and it was awesome, served on a sizzling hot plate. The five-bowl tray of chutneys and spices stayed on the table and were used throughout our meal (not just for our quickly gobbled poppadoms early on). House white was decent as well. I knew i needed to get my share. I headed here today for the biryani. The Pakistani Kitchen is set inside Eat 17's Market. It's like a food court with 3-4 options, of which the Empress Market is one of them. There's common seating around the space. Not much of it, but most people I saw visiting while I was there this afternoon, were taking away boxes to eat at the office or elsewhere. The regular menu includes traditional Pakistani Street food like bun kebabs - that are very yum. There are also bowls of dhal and baingan bharta (aubergine) which are sold as hot pots. The food is super yum. There are no drinks available here. But the adjoining Eat17 supermarket has a large range of alcoholic and non alcoholic chilled drinks and freshly squeezed orange juice too. If I'm in Hammersmith anytime, I'll definitely be making the detour to eat here

Now, I have passed by Anarkali many times and have found it quite unappealing. We have tried every restaurant next to it...except this one. So I checked photos of the interiors and only once we were satisfied that we could brave it, did we reserve a table for dinner. First impression...pleasant ambiance. Felt doubly pleasant as the exterior gives a more claustrophobic vibe. (they must change the logo!) The service experience was mixed. One gentleman was over friendly, the other was over grumpy. And I don't know if this is a rule they all follow, but they say a lllooooot of 'Thank You'. I know there's nothing wrong with it..but imagine when you are in the middle of a conversation and a staff member picks up a glass from your table..says thank you, brings your next drink...says thank you, brings you plates...says thank you, brings your food...says thank you. They said Thank You at least 50 times in those 2-2.5 hours. A tad bit annoying. They also lurk around your table a lot...I almost felt spied on. I had the butter Chicken Tikka for starters, Chicken Saag and Pilau Rice for mains. The husband had lamb chops and Lamb Gosht. I have eaten a lot of bad Indian in London...this comes in the bottom pile of the bad. The pilau rice was the only saving grace. I should have drawn my conclusion and not ordered anything else. But noooo...I had to fall for the ploy, "Our kulfi is the best. Your must try it." It's one of the more bland, icy, non-creamy kulfis. Such a shame. For drinks...my vodka came with a non-fizzy coke and I had to get it changed. Won't be visiting this restaurant again. They seem to have many regulars...which is disturbing as the food isn't good at all. I would give this a 2...the extra 0.5 is for - decent ambiance, good papad, chutneys and pilau, and a toilet that's on the same floor!
