We wanted to add to our initial review. We also have the gold service plan. I usually think those…read moreare a scam, but we have been so grateful we have it. They take great care of the HVAC system and they have been there for us when other things came up. Today we tried get a new refrigerator installed and there was a plumbing issue. They got their plumber there and solved the problem within an hour. We know we got lucky that he was available right then, but we always feel like they have our back!

Signed up for their maintenance plan last fall. They checked my furnace, all good. This spring I…read morescheduled a maintenance call for my air conditioner. I told the repairman that I had turned it on once and I had no cooling. He checked inside, no problem. Went outside, took the cover off surrounding the air conditioner and immediately could see the problem. My dog had urinated on the corner repeatedly which ate away at everything and corroded the pipes that hold the refrigerant. He said he had to order the parts and it would be $3000 to fix. After 8 days I called and was scheduled for the repair. I never received a written estimate for the repair. Was never told the maintenance call was now a diagnostic call or that I would be charged. Never received a bill for this either. The repairman said it could take up to 4 hours to get it fixed. It took 2.5 hours. I paid and asked for a receipt, was told it would be emailed to me. After 4 days, I called as I had not gotten my receipt. It was promptly sent over. I was charged for 4 hours of work when it only took him 2.5 hours. I immediately called back and explained the overcharge. I was put on hold for over 15 minutes. Then I was told yes, the repair took 2.5 hours, but the additional time charged was from the earlier maintenance calll. I said that was already paid for as I was on their plan. Was told no, since it turned out to be a diagnostic call, not a maintenance call, I was being charged. I said he didnt diagnose anything, once the cover was taken off it was obvious what the problem was. She doubled down on her explanation. I had never been told this, never received a bill for this. I feel i was overcharged for the repair and they were simply making an excuse for the overcharge. I promptly cancelled any further maintenance from this company and will never use them again.

I have to shout out to 72 degrees Comfort Company of Ankeny. ( I didn't realize that there was a…read morebranch in Grimes otherwise I would have contacted them due to residing in Grimes myself.). I saw a commercial showing $49 late season furnace tune ups. Well I googled the $49 deal and found 72 degrees/-- which I didn't recognize as the company from the tv commercial. But i researched this company and found great reviews and decided to go with it. I reached out due to concerns of cigarette smoking wafting up to the third floor. I'm not a smoker. I also heard furnace poppings in the middle of the night and I knew for sure it wasnt mine. But I now have peace of mind that my furnace was thoroughly checked and it's running fine. I didn't have to pay the usual $125 or so...it was $49. I highly recommend this company for its thoroughness...thank you Daniel Milligan and Sarah the customer service rep on the phone for excellent service.

The technicians did a great job and I would give them five stars. However, the office manager was…read morequite disappointing. I received a call today stating that they never received payment for a service that was provided in August 2023, even though they did receive payment for another location that was serviced on the same day. This was due to them not writing down the correct email for the second location. I do understand that mistakes can happen and that payments are necessary to run the company. However, the way the office manager spoke to me about the payment was very unprofessional. It felt like she was the owner of the company. Due to this, I have decided not to call them back for any of my seven locations in Des Moines. I read on Yelp that "72 is about creating and developing relationships with our customers by providing superior service". However, this is not how they can build a relationship with customers. I have been working in customer service for the past seven years and I have never encountered anyone who has spoken to me in such a manner. I just hope that the owner, Kendel Richlen, reads this and takes action to improve his business for future customers.

Schaal installed a new furnace, AC and water heater in the spring of 2021. We also enrolled in the…read moremaintenance program and still have that. Every year the AC fails to work until someone comes out to look at it. We try to book the free AC service from the maintenance program for late April/early May to have it ready for summer but they constantly call to push those appointments due to "high demand for service calls" and frequently don't get that free visit until we call because the AC is working, usually on the hottest day of the year to that point. This year is no different and we have not had AC since Friday July 17th. Called to set up an appointment and the earliest I was told was available is Monday (July 20) afternoon. I asked about priority scheduling with the maintenance program and they said they would put us on an emergency services waitlist. It is now Sunday afternoon and when I called to check they said nobody will be coming before tomorrow with our scheduled appointment. I cannot believe there are that many other priority customers that with all their technicians they cannot get someone out to my house within 3 days. I can only assume it is because the terms of the program also mean I don't have to pay overtime/weekend rates so they are prioritizing higher revenue customers. If I were a potential customer looking to replace an HVAC system I would not go with Schaal again. If I were a potential customer needing service I would not call Schaal either; look for a better locally owned company (Schall was bought out by private equity a few years ago). I'm giving 2 stars as the installation and service in 2021 and 2022 was as expected but fell off quickly after ownership changed in 2022.
