You are assigned your spot in the room. No socks are permitted. And don't even think about bringing your water bottle in with you. More importantly, there isn't a hint of instruction. He calls out the poses in "yoga-ese," and the hard core people snap into action. As for me, who has no damned clue what the words meant, I was left to scramble behind, trying to duplicate what they were doing. Poorly. The "instructor"/owner is not remotely friendly. If he is seeking additional clientele, his aloofness, if not downright hostility, certainly isn't helping his cause.

I wanted to find a date night for my husband's birthday and I got bored of dinner and movies. So I…read morehad a classic bad idea: "Hey, we haven't danced since our wedding! I LOVE dancing! Let's try dancing again! OK, maybe dancing isn't HIS favorite activity, but I'm the one scheduling it, right? What choice does he have?" This birthday outing was basically a bowling ball with the name Erin on it. A did a quick web search and found that on Friday nights, the Dance Scene has an hour lesson on a short routine within a style followed by a dance party (they're separate admission fees but can be combined - we paid for both). On date night, we arrived about ten minutes late to find the group working on an International Rumba routine, meaning, we were desperately lost and unprepared*. Since we couldn't follow the routine steps and the other people there were having some success, my husband didn't feel comfortable or happy staying for the dance party afterward. This was HIS birthday outing, after all, so I buried my disappointment and we decided to leave and find another activity. Anna the owner noticed we were having trouble keeping up and she was kind enough to offer us a free private lesson to make up for our bad experience (which, again, was totally our fault by virtue of arriving late!!). I didn't expect my husband to be interested, but we took her up on her offer and had a great time re-learning some basics of foxtrot and swing styles, and practicing our form. Our "frame" is pretty flimsy and our stride lengths probably never match, but I think we've improved! I'm personally excited to go back for another group lesson (though I might be going by myself... I'll just introduce myself to one of the silver foxes without a partner! Don't tell my husband). In regards to the private lesson: as a professional classical musician and private teacher of same, I've experienced hundreds of lessons from both the teacher and student perspective. I've got many friends and colleagues who teach as well, and whose methods (and results) I've observed firsthand. I've taught and been taught enough to know that, for learning efficiency and depth of subject knowledge, instruction must be tailored to the student. This probably sounds trite; ALL teachers would say that they tailor instruction to the needs of each student. MOST teachers, from my experience, don't tailor instruction. I wish I was better at it, myself. It's the hardest part of teaching. From a lesson alongside my husband, I observed that Anna does that gear-switching with the best of them. I can't recommend her services highly enough - literally, I'm not an experienced enough dancer to give her an objective professional review on how good a dancer she is. But I CAN give this review as one teacher to another: Anna is champion of pedagogy. *In regards to the group lessons being too advanced for us, Anna did assure us that they usually have two instructors in a group class and try to accommodate different dancing levels in the same evening to the extent possible. We came in too late and on the wrong night (her co-instructor had an outside commitment).

UPDATE: The last couple of months the music has been at a completely reasonable level (occasionally…read moreaudible, but not ruining my life). I still haven't taken a class here, so I can't give 5 stars...but the effort to be neighborly deserves recognition. Disrespectful to the neighbors. I, along with others have had to put in several noise complaints. The landlord is taking action for the noise level rendering him unable to rent out his residences. The dance studio that was marketed to the landlord as a yoga studio, is small enough that the music volume can be controlled, however, the owner jacks the music up and wears a completely unnecessary headset all of which is entirely disruptive to the neighbors. Rude when approached. Overall terrible for the neighborhood. Don't recommend supporting.

The sequence was so well-rounded, and her cues made so much sense. I appreciate when I can tell a teacher really knows what she's talking about, and Christy is the real deal. Ana's barre class is also fantastic! Finally, PiYo with Becky which was a killerrrrr and such a good workout. Do it. The studio is absolutely beautiful and the manager Christy (different Christy from the teacher and owner!) is so, so delightful. Prices are great, parking is easy. Great spot!

The instructors are amazing and some of the students here are GOOD. But no need to be intimidated - other students are kind and encouraging. The last time I came though, it was very crowded, almost uncomfortably so, so I'm guessing this place is gaining popularity but it is well deserved. I love that classes are drop-in and I've had three different instructors and they were all excellent. I've only taken the absolute beginner, absolute beginner 2, and beginner 1 class. The beginner 1 class was a little advanced for me, but even so, there was no pressure to do any of the combinations that I couldn't keep up with. If you want to really improve your technique, this is the perfect place to do it. Even though it's nice that it's drop-in, I do tend to feel behind since I can't go as consistently. Overall very happy to have this place to go to as an option when I'm in the area!

Attended this wonderful class as a part of a Yelp sponsored event. The venue is a really cool shed…read morelike structure that was comfortable and clean. Very large so everyone in the class was comfortable. Brought our own yoga mats, but they provided blocks and stretching straps. Our instructor Lauren was so nice and very personable, but most importantly, a great instructor. The moves she led us through were all pretty basic, but that was fine by me as I'm a newbie to yoga. My wife, who does yoga regularly, loved the class as well. The thing we both really enjoyed was the meditation at the end. Lauren led all of us into a state of relaxed bliss at the completion of the yoga portion. We didn't try any of the desserts provided, but everyone seemed to be really enjoying them. Kudos to Yelp for getting me to try, and enjoy, yoga. Something my wife had been trying for a while to get me to do. We will definitely be back and look forward to exploring the interesting neighborhood it is located in as well!!
