The employees are always friendly and helpful, and it is a great value for a couple hours worth of entertainment for folks of all ages on a weekend evening or rainy day or snow day, or any day for that matter. We have enjoyed ourselves on crowded Friday evenings, and also on deserted weekday afternoons. Duckpin bowling, for those not familiar with it, uses smaller pins and balls, and you get three shots instead of two. It is harder to get high scores than tenpin bowling, but more fun in my opinion, and also nicer for kids. Lucky Strike has some lanes set up with bumpers that prevent gutter balls and allow carom shots if you like that. They also have rock-and-bowl some nights, with spinning lights and music. The lanes are the old-school manual type, so you have to push a button to clear the pins, and you get to calculate your own score. Some people seem afraid of this, but the rules are simple and the math is just addition of small numbers. There is an instruction sheet there, and I am sure that any employee on will gladly provide any needed assistance. In addition to duckpin bowling they have an air hockey table, some pinball and video game machines, and a pool room. They don't serve any food, but seem OK with people bringing their own. My son and I have been there quite a few times, and always enjoyed ourselves. Lucky Strike Lanes is one of the last of these places keeping the tradition alive, and I am happy that they are still hanging in there.

The lanes themselves are well maintained in terms of finish and mechanics of the pinsetting equipment considering the business has been in operation for OVER 50 YEARS. They do lack automatic scoring, however in Candlepin bowling, automatic score systems are not always accurate due to the the use of felled pins in subsequent shots. Frankly, if you have a problem with writing on a piece of paper to keep score and think that is a reason to complain, you're a moron. Additionally they have a nice array of Brunswick tournament class billiard tables. There is also a bar and lounge with a decent selection for such a small operation and everything is modestly priced. My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because their hours fluctuate unpredictably. Generally one can find them open on a weekend afternoon, but if you're looking for something to do after 10PM, it's rare that they're open that late. I highly recommend a quick call prior to arriving to confirm availability. Do yourself a favor and experience the classic New England tradition known as Candlepin Bowling at Canal Lanes.
