The Citrus Hamachi roll was amazing! This is a must order item. We also got the Yuzu Ratan Ramen which had shoyu-rare and chicken broth which was good because the broth soaked into the ingredients, however the broth was a tad vinegary which made sipping the broth not as enjoyable. If you like a spicy soup this is a good bowl to get. Make sure to get extra eggs. I also probably would have preferred the thick noodle. read more

Afuri, a popular Japanese ramen chain, finally opened up a location in OC! I'm so glad that I don't have to drive to LA for yuzu ramen. Afuri is located in a popular food plaza, so parking can be tough on the weekends. This restaurant replaced Hakata Ikkousha. Currently, the restaurant is still in their soft opening phase. There's not a lot of seating inside, so the wait will probably be long on the weekends. There's a few tables and bar seating. The workers are hard working and friendly. I came on a weekday, so I didn't have to wait too long for a table. I came with my cousins, and we all basically ordered the same ramen. Our server was friendly, and answered all the questions we had. She was apologetic when they couldn't make a substitution for thick noodles in the yuzu shio ramen. The tori karaage was juicy and crispy. I liked that you could taste the yuzu in the sauce. Maybe I was expecting too much from the yuzu shio ramen, but I was a bit disappointed. The ramen came out warm and not hot. The yuzu flavor and broth was mild and a bit overwhelming. They give you a lot of noodles, but it didn't quite match up with the protein in the bowl. I had also ordered a yuzu limeade, but it didn't come out until after the ramen. The worker did apologize for the wait. The limeade was tasty though. They're still working out the kinks, so I don't blame them. My cousins and I agreed that this restaurant was ok. It is a bit pricey, but the quality is there. I do recommend this restaurant though, which is why I'm rating it 4 stars. Maybe I just didn't order the right ramen? However, the chicken karaage and limeade were good. The service was wonderful. I can tell that they care a lot about making their customers happy. Also, it's nice to have a yuzu ramen shop in oc! read more

Recently visited their soft opening by chance. This place has amazing Yuzu flavor ramen! Broth is quite light and refreshing. One can find themselves dunking their head into a bowl and not come up for air until it's empty. Staff were very nice, polite, and provide informative recommendations. Always love it when the team stays engaged with us throughout the meal. We also ordered the Softshell Crab Roll. To my surprise, being predominantly a ramen shop, tasted amazing! Their appetizer Fried Ramen Egg with the sauce beneath it will light your tastebud to stardom. Scallop Sushi was also a delight to enjoy. Inside, you'll be surrounded with good Japanese jams and a modern take on terms of design. Very clean and tastefully decorated. We can't wait to come back and try more of their ramen variations. Great job team! read more

Incredibly delicious, REFRESHING ramen. Not a word that typically comes to mind when I think ramen. But if you try one of their 3 yuzu ramens, you slurp broth without the heaviness of other rich ramen. My friend and I ordered the Yuzu Shio ramen and we both finished our bowls, broth and everything! The citrus complements the umami chicken broth so well. And the chashu was tender and juicy. The interior is stylish fusing a modern ramen shop aesthetic and Japanese pop culture. There were cute figurines of Astro Boy and a Gundam decorating the walls. No wait and a few open parking spots on a Sunday at 5pm. Definitely recommend a visit! read more

Afuri - Yuzu shio ramen - Ramen Near Me - Costa Mesa, California

Delicious ramen. Friendly service. Super busy in this cozy little spot in a busy area

We came on a Sunday afternoon and only waited 10 minutes for us to be seated. The service we had was minimal, but everyone was friendly. The place was very nice looking and clean. But after getting a table, one of our plates was greasy, so that was a bit off putting. The food made up for it though. We weren't that hungry at first, but all the food was so good! Food/Drink: Tori Karaage 5/5 - One of the best karaages we've tried recently - The sauce it came with was citrusy which I liked a lot Yuzu Shio Ramen 4/5 - Flavor was light and citrusy - Comes with thin noodles, but I'd prefer the thicker noodles next time if they can substitute Yuzu Tsuyu Tsukemen 5/5 - We both liked this one the most - Very good flavor - They ask if you want the noodles cold or warm, which was a first for both of us since other places usually make it cold Yuzu Frozen Beer 3/5 - Pretty bitter tasting at first from the frozen part - The actual beer was p good considering I don't like beer Overall, I would come back again to try the other dishes on the menu. I was looking at the kaisendon to try next time and I'd definitely get the tsukemen again. They gave $5off coupons for the next visit too and are having a ramen giveaway for their grand opening. read more

Saw this place popping up on my Yelp feed lately and decided to give it a try. Parking is extremely tricky in this plaza since there are so many fooderies in the area. We arrived around 7 PM and it took about an hour waitlist to finally be seated. We got the Yuzu shoyu ramen yuzu shio ramen, toro karaage and frozen afuri yuzu lager. Staff was extremely friendly and food arrived very quickly. The karaage was so juicy and tender it was almost worth the wait. The Ramen was the main hit both were excellent. The broth was so unique and a bit citrusy in a good way. It was honestly some of the best broth I've ever had. Also the texture of the thin noodles was so good. I ended up devouring the entire bowl. The frozen lager was also very unique where it's a beer topped with frozen Yuzu blend. Definitely something new for me and it was a great experience. The inside of the restaurant was also very nice and modern but the space itself is very small, hence the long wait times. Overall, the experience itself was great and very quick to where we finish our meal in less than half an hour, but I don't think it was worth waiting an hour on the waitlist. I would come back but maybe not during peak hours so I won't have to wait as long. read more

Happy to hear that another Japanese staple has landed in OC! The restaurant was a bit on the smaller side, so definitely expect a bit of a wait. Parking is kinda difficult in this small plaza. The restaurant had a really clean and bright interior! Afuri specializes in a really unique Yuzu ramen made with a chicken broth rather than your standard tonkotsu base. Because of this, the ramen comes out with quite a refreshing flavor. The super bright and acidic broth was a nice change of pace when your standard ramen is rich, heavy, and sometimes a touch too oily. The yuzu flavors were strong and cut through any greasiness nicely, which made me want to keep eating bite after bite. Lots of noodles too! Karaage was also really tasty. The spicy Karaage was sauced up with a spicy sweet coating, and the chicken was juicy and well seasoned. Overall really happy with Afuri! A great ramen option when you're not looking to go into a food coma right after your meal. read more

Finally, the perfect Yuzu Ramen in the states! I no longer have to fly to Japan to satisfy my Afuri cravings! I started with the sashimi plate, which was incredibly fresh and generous with the portions. For the main event, the Yuzu Shoyu was standout! the broth was deeply flavorful yet light enough that I could actually monitor my sodium levels without sacrifice. Service was exceptional, ambiance was japendi style. The noodles were served with that perfect al dente snap. To top it all off, the Yuzu Beer with the signature foam was easily my favorite part of the meal. Truly a 10/10 experience, I can't wait to come back! read more

I am obsessed with the Yuzu Ratan ramen, and I had to come back! It's feels like I'm in Little Tokyo or LA for an exceptional bowl of ramen without the traffic/parking headache. Did not have high hopes because I did not think this had a lot of reviews but when I went there, I was pleasantly surprised the service was immaculate. It wasn't loud. It was busy, but the food came out really quickly and fresh. I could tell the ingredients were not full of fillers, like salty water or fake flavoring really good would come back here again. I'm not even a ramen fan, but the yuzu ramen here is such a delight! We stumbled upon their soft opening around 2pm so it was a short wait. The restaurant is small but has a modern, minimalist flare to it. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Food came out quickly as well. We enjoyed every single item, from the crispy ramen eggs, scallop nigiri, sushi roll, to the shio yuzu ramen. The sushi rice could be better, but the ramen was so good that I can overlook some small flaws. The ramen was light, fragrant, and delicious. Overall, we are so happy with the meal and excited to come back! read more

This location just opened and we went during their soft opening hours. It wasn't busy and we got a table right away. There's not a lot of tables so I can imagine tables will be harder to get once they actually open. There's a Japanese grocery store across the street with Gashapon machines, so that's an added bonus. Service was quick and friendly, and there's plenty of parking in the lot. Now for what matters - the food. I had their famous Yuzu Ramen. It was really good, but I wished it had a bit more of a kick to it. My son got the Tantan ramen and I actually liked his better, but it was very spicy. The homemade Yuzu Limeade really hit the spot too. They also have the original Ramune flavor soda. My favorite part was the broccolini. Not sure how they made it so crispy and flavorful. It's a must! read more

We ordered a soup ramen and a tsukemen. Both were good with a good balance of richness, deep flavor, and the hint of freshness from the yuzu. The chicken karaage was average but paired well with the refreshing yuzu beer (we had to get an extra 4 pack to go). Was it worth the 1 hour wait at 1:30PM on a weekend, one definitely might argue. Overall the staffs were friendly and the ramen was delicious. read more

Great all-around spot! We walked in on a weekend afternoon and sat at the bar. The staff were very friendly and attentive, we were greeted and given water right away. Afuri coming to Costa Mesa is like bread on butter... it just makes sense. While there are A LOT of ramen places in Costa Mesa, what sets Afuri apart is... their yuzu broth, cocktails, and just overall trendy and modern vibe. I met up with my bestie for lunch on a Friday and it wasn't too packed. We were seated immediately, and parking was easy to find (the plaza's parking lot is usually horrendous). We both ordered the Yuzu Ratan ramen. It's my go-to, and I have never strayed. The yuzu flavor really peaks through the spicy shoyu, and the flavors are complementary. I love how light and refreshing it is! I've been to the Arts District location many times, and while this location is smaller, the experience and food are consistent. I'll definitely be back ASAP since it saves me the drive. read more

I got their yuzu shoyu ramen and tonkatsu shoyu ramen. I really liked the noodles but I had higher expectations for the broth. They were both on the saltier side especially the yuzu, which was unexpected. I thought it would be a lot lighter. I wasn't able to drink much of the broth due to this. if you're a yuzu fan the yuzu shoyu would definitely stand out between the two. each bowl only has 1 piece of meat as well. read more

I was so excited to try this place for the yuzu dipping ramen and ended up loving everything else too! The crispy broccolini was so delicious and unique. I also liked the spicy chicken karage appetizer, as it had good flavor. The crispy ramen eggs were also unique and I love how runny it is and the small salad it comes with. The tonkotsu ramen was decent, nothing too special and it came with very little pork chashu. The yuzu dipping ramen was amazing and definitely what I would get over their regular ramens! The concept is so fun and the sauce was delicious. read more

Will preface this review, this was my first meal of the day at 10pm so I was hungry. The restaurant recently opened in place of Hakata Ikkousha, which was one of my more frequented ramen restaurants in the area so I was curious of the new replacement. Entering at 10pm there was no line at 10pm which was nice, we were sat immediately and the service was quick. I ordered the Yuzu Ratan, which is a spicy yuzu chicken broth ramen, and my girlfriend ordered the tonkatsu shio, which is a tonkatsu broth with shio tare. I ordered mine with extra noodles because I was so hungry. We also ordered a side of the soft shell crab tempura. The food came out very quickly and the immediate highlight was the softshell crab tempura. The tempura batter was light and crispy, and the crab complimented it so well, along side the yuzu dipping sauce. 10/10 would recommend. It came as an order of 2 pieces which was perfect for us. The ramen came out, slightly above room temperature, not piping hot, but the flavor of the yuzu was very pleasant. A unique offering, the yuzu flavor really paired well with the chicken broth, and melded into a wonderful flavor. The chashu was well cooked, and the egg was perfectly jammy. The tonkatsu was fatty, and full of flavor. It did remind us of the god fire flavor of Hakata. Overall the yuzu ramen was much more of a standout and I would recommend trying one of those before going straight to a tonkatsu. Again, I was hungry, but I ordered an extra side of noodles, but that was not filling at all. They said my side was already added to my bowl, and I honestly couldn't tell, I thought that was the normal size and the side of noodles would be presented to me afterwards but it wasn't. Definitely if you're hungry, I would order more than just a singular bowl. Overall the experience was good, the food was worth trying, and if you have to get something I highly recommend the soft shell crab read more

Second time visiting AFURI! This time, I tried their signature Yuzu Shio Ramen. It's a bit different from the light, delicate yuzu shio ramen you might typically expect--it's actually quite rich and hearty. The seafood dashi comes through really strong, giving it a bold, punchy flavor rather than a subtle, delicate one.

my favorite ramen restaurant currently if not ever!! I tried them in culver city and was obsessed with the yuzu-forward ramen broth, so I had to put my friends on this when I found out they opened an OC location! safe to say it is now their favorites as well most "yuzu ramen" you find elsewhere will barely have the yuzu flavor but afuri makes it very obvious and it's super refreshing. I don't usually like thin noodles either but don't mind theirs at all, it's a great texture. my personal favorite is the yuzu rattan, the tsukemen is great too and has thicker noodles. yuzu shoyu over shio for me but I just prefer that flavor profile in general and both are still amazing we tried the crispy eggs (not super special but the sauce is yum), and citrus hamachi roll (SO GOOD) as well consider me a loyal fan read more

Afuri opened up in Culver City last year right as we were moving to Orange County and was bummed I hadn't gotten a chance to try it. Luckily, Costa Mesa has one so I finally got the chance to check out the spot. After debating, I went with the yuzu shoyu because after reading a few reviews I realized that this is what they are known for. We also added the blue tuna rice crispie and loved the flavor but the tuna didn't taste the freshest. The ramen came out next and with one bite, I could understand the hype. The broth is light and refreshing but also manages to retain a deep flavor profile at the same time. The noodles were perfectly al dente and the thin bamboo shoots add the texture to each bite. For dessert, we got the matcha tiramisu but definitely wouldn't recommend. I'm not sure if it was an older tray, but the lady fingers tasted a bit stale and a little bit too soggy for me. Also with a price tag of $12, I would have expected more. The ramen was a 5 star for me but the tiramisu brought it down to a 4 star overall rating. read more

Love love love Afuri! Yuzu flavor ramen is such a unique thing and I love that they do it so well here. The noodles are cooked al dente and the chashu is nice and smoky. Although I wish there was more than just one piece for the price I pay. The kaarage appetizer however, was very generous in the portion. I love the egg salad that it sat on top of. Chicken was crispy but very juicy inside. The hamachi roll was just ok. I'm not a fan of carrots inside my sushi. I wish the inside was a California roll or a different filling instead of just vegetables. Service was great! We sat at the bar and the waiter was very attentive and friendly. Parking situation is just ok. They do offer complimentary valet but you'll have to circle around a few times for self parking since there's so many restaurants here. read more

came on a Saturday for lunch. place was busy. seemed like this place was the only place that was crowded. we waited for 20 min . It had a bar and few tables but you couldn't choose where you prefer to be seated bcos the tablet to put ur name under didn't give u that option. I was not sure what kind of ramen afuri was known for but since the first few choices were yuzu ramen kind, we all got that. we ordered the shio, Ratan and shoyu n tsukemen. I never really had yuzu flavor broth for ramen but it was definitely strong and we weren't used to such overpowering flavor. the ramen were good and we did select the yuzu flavor so I couldn't complain about it, even if I didn't like it. but, if u like yuzu then this is the spot. we also ordered Hamachi roll. portion was small. our service was pretty good and place was clean. however, I did have to admit it's on the pricier side. read more

I tried Afuri in Japan and was pleasantly surprised to see they opened a location in Costa Mesa. I was intrigued by their yuzu ramen offerings but remember that I don't love the yuzu shio. So I decided to try the yuzu-tsuyu instead and loved it. I got the noodles warm and it was a good choice. The texture was perfect - nice and chewy. The dipping sauce was balanced in flavor and had the right amount of yuzu. The kakuni pork was delicious though I wish it came with more. I added chicken chashu for more protein but wish I had added more kakuni pork instead. The egg was perfectly cooked and jammy. My friend and I shared the snap pea salad and the spicy ramen eggs. The snap pea is a smaller portion and nice for a light started. Highly recommend the ramen eggs. The eggs sit in this curry-like aioli and has a slight kick but it's really not very spicy at all. They know how to cook their eggs here, that is for sure. A couple of hiccups with the service - they forgot my friend's dipping sauce and forgot my spoon. But otherwise friendly. Restaurant space is small but aesthetically pleasing and reminiscent of what you'd find in Japan. Would return. read more

Compared with their other locations, the exterior is nothing special--more like an outdated OC restaurant than an upscale destination. The interior is equally simple, cold, and uninspiring, almost like dining in a school canteen. Nothing particularly modern or luxurious about it, except the prices. Service is friendly, but not quite professional or attentive enough. Several basic utensils had to be requested rather than automatically provided. ---Yuzu Shio: Sounds amazing, but not my thing. The broth was uninspiring and the noodles were just okay. Wouldn't order it again. --+Tonkotsu Shio: Overpriced for something that tasted very average. From the noodles to the broth, nothing really stood out. -++The side dishes, on the other hand, are where things get addictive. The crispy ramen egg and soft-shell crab tempura are perfect with their amazing yuzu beer. The karaage can be inconsistent, though--sometimes crispy and delicious, other times soggy. ---Teppanyaki Wagyu Skirt: Tasted more like a premium steak than wagyu. Good flavor, but the meat wasn't cut all the way through, and no knife was provided. While trying to pull it apart with chopsticks and a fork, hot juice splashed straight onto my eyelid. So yeah, for a second there, my mouth wasn't the only thing tasting dinner--my eye got a sample too. +++Yuzu Beer: To die for. Refreshing, dangerously easy to drink, and probably my favorite thing here. -++Basque Cheesecake: Almost perfectly made--smooth and creamy, not dense or chunky. Just a little too sweet for me. ---Matcha Tiramisu: Something was off. The milk had a strange bitterness that definitely wasn't coming from the matcha. Maybe it was starting to turn--or had been sitting around a little too long because nobody ordered it? Either way, not a flavor I wanted to investigate further. I'll come back for the small plates and that dangerously addictive yuzu beer. No ramen, no teppanyaki for me. read more

Their most popular item is the yuzu shiyo ramen, and it did not disappoint!! The yuzu made the broth refreshing and unique. The egg was also perfectly cooked. Been meaning to try this place ever since finding out they opened a location here in OC. It's located in the plaza where the 7leaves and Wanderlust Creamery is on Bristol Street. My partner and I went around 3pm and put our names down on the waitlist, had 10 parties in front of us, and got the text after 20 minutes that our table was ready. The seating area is pretty small but spacious enough to fit big parties. My partner and I sat at the bar area which was nice. The crispy ramen eggs were a delicious appetizer before we had our ramen. I got the yuzu shio and my partner got the tonkotsu shio. We were both really hungry and managed to finish our bowls. Happened to notice Afuri during their soft opening while visiting another shop in the plaza and decided to wait for a table. It sounded vaguely familiar to me until the wait staff confirmed it's the same Afuri chain in Tokyo. We sat at the bar and ordered their trademark ramen - both classic and spicy. Both were great! The yuzu flavor is strong in the classic and less noticeable in the spicy. I could definitely see this as my preferred ramen during the summer. The portion was ok, maybe a little smaller than usual. The noodles were excellent. I am not sure if I would want to wait a long time for a table but I was happy with the food and service. read more

My friend and I love ramen so we decided to try out Afuri. The parking is always very easy to find parking, and the wait on a Sunday afternoon for lunch is not bad at all for a group of 2. We got the yuzu shio ramen and yuzu shoyu ramen. The shio is definitely lighter and compliments the yuzu flavor very well, but the shoyu ramen is bolder in flavor so it would just depend on a person's personal taste in ramen. The pan fried gyoza definitely tastes fresh and handmade. If you're wanting to try something new and different, Afuri is the place to go. Ambience is very chill, and the staff are efficient. The check in process, I'll admit, is a little ridiculous though. Their check in machine is not that responsive so it takes three times the effort and time to even put in your phone number to check in. Overall it's not exactly my new favorite spot that I'll rave to everyone about, but it's definitely a safe choice to take your family out, catch up with friends, or go on a date. read more

This lot is ebb and flow but usually plenty of parking. I came last Thursday at noon and they had a line outside, I opted to comeback today and sneak in earlier. 1115 was perfect and I sat right away. Friendly service ready to answer questions as needed. I was after the Yuza Shoyo as I have not tried a Yuza ramen and was curious. I tend to lean pork broth but this was nice for a change and I enjoyed it. I think its one my wife is going to love. I dont drink much anymore but I did enjoy the bar set up, they had some nice looking stuff on display. Looks like they have a lot to make and a couple frozen drink makers that had me curious. The menu looked to have much more than ramen, I was after ramen today, Im also looking forward to trying some other items. Just tried this newly opened ramen spot and we already know we'll be back soon! We ordered the yuzu shio ramen, kids ramen, tsukemen, and a few appetizers, and everything was delicious. I'm usually not a big ramen person because a lot of ramen feels too heavy or oily for me, but this place was surprisingly refreshing and light while still being super flavorful. They let you choose between a soba-style thin noodle or thick noodle, and honestly all of us preferred the thin noodles.
