I went to Afterthoughts for the first time when Cora's became so busy, that I would have to wait an hour or more for a table. The Afterthoughts is a pretty good café to go to. This café has a good selection of coffee concoctions and desserts, including keto and gluten free alternatives. I ordered the Keto Strawberry Cheesecake it was creamy and tasty. I also had the Gluten-Free Pecan Tart that I found was more enjoyable. The cappuccino was very solid and found no problems with the drink. The establishment has a nice traditional aesthetic to it with mild lighting. Afterthoughts is a great place to have a caffeinated drink and snack. Afterthoughts is definitely a gourmet coffee and desert restaurant! I cannot say enough about the deserts at Afterthoughts. The coffee is also fantastic! This is a welcoming restaurant with lots of booth space for couples or groups of four. There are gathering areas for groups and casual seating throughout the restaurant. The service was wonderful. Our server was informed and provided us with details for the various cakes and other deserts. We ordered the Vancouver style cheesecake and it was simply amazing! I had to try the 4-layer Chocolate Peanut Butter, Fudge, Espresso cake as a chocolate lover and ordered it to go. The server asked if I would like whip cream and my reply naturally was "of course"! I expected a small topping of whip cream and got three almost ice cream size scoops to go along with my cake! The cake was divine! Display has some bakery goods and cakes to sale but you can custom order your cake 48hrs prior to your event and it will be ready for you. Variety of teas and coffee available. Meticulously aligned seatings for two people and larger groups in all over separated by the plexiglass which doesn't look out of place. I came here after dinner but there was long line up. There were lots of cheese cake names inside of showcase. However some were already sold out the counter Clark forgot to take out those sold out item's name. I wish I could have tried Cherry cheese cake. Instead of that, I had Mint Oreo Cheese cake. They have very unique cheese cakes and it made me to try everything. Preparing drink took a while. Seating area was quite big and maybe four people can sit in the booth. We wanted some dessert to go with our take out dinner during the COVID pandemic. My husband had seen Afterthoughts and thought it would be nice to share one of their desserts. I do think that they are very pricey for a café. The price of their desserts is very close to what we pay when we go to a good restaurant in Vancouver with table service, linens on the table and a nice dining ambiance. They do have regular seating that would be available after the pandemic is over. All the desserts are on display behind glass counters. You line up and order for takeout. We ordered a pumpkin pie. While the filling was very good the pie crust was very tough. My expectation is that a café that specializes in desserts should be able to make a good pie crust. I really had to push hard on my fork to cut through the crust and it was very bland without much flavour. I don't think that I would order dessert from here again as I don't feel it is value for the money and the pie crust I make when I make pie is far superior. read more

So took our coffee back and politely showed the server that it doesn't even look like a drip coffee, let alone a bit more specialized Americano. She said no it's how we make coffee and machine isn't broken. She made us another cup of coffee which true to her words, was exactly the same....boiled water disguised as coffee. We both take coffee black and without sugar. It was sooo disappointing that we drove all the way to Vancouver just to have the satisfaction of having a nice cup of coffee at Thomas Haas. We came on a weekend late afternoon to an empty restaurant, which was nice because it was very quiet and peaceful. They have a variety of baked goods from pies, cheesecakes, to quiche. Prices are a bit steep - almost $7 for a slice of cake/pie. We ordered a Vancouver Whistler Cheesecake which has a light fluffy cheesecake (lighter than a New York cheesecake) with a chocolate cake and chocolate ganache topping. If you like chocolate, this would satisfy your craving. After a couple of bites, this does get quite heavy and sweet. The apple pie was a major disappointment. The crust was not crunchy or flaky. Personally, I thought the proportion of crust to filling is off. The perfect bite would entail a crunchy crust and saucy apple filling, but after you eat the crust, you are left with almost 2 inches of filling. Despite asking for my pie heated up, the interior was like jello. We ate the crust and left the rest untouched. While the portion is generous, I don't think the price justifies the taste and quality. If you are looking for a place with a lot of options for cheesecakes, then this might be an option. I personally wouldn't come back. read more

I agree with Angela B. Don't expect over the top service here. I came in and all tables ere occupied so I took my cake to go. I was rushed to order even though nobody was behind me and didn't feel like I was cared for as a customer. There were two other ladies working who just stared as me as I looked at the different cakes in the display, awkward!! I ordered a toffee cake and it was $7, which I felt was overpriced plus tax and I tipped on top of that as well. The cake quality was a $5 piece at most!! Maybe cheesecake is worthwhile for the cost (as cream cheese costs more) but I felt really jipped for what I received. The lady said she would have staff return my call, 3 days later no call so I call back... same thing will have owner return my call. After calling every other day for 3 weeks FINALLY the owner was in to take my call. She offers me a " FREE " slice of cake. Get real lady. That was a $50 slice not free. The cake was the carrot cake & I will never return. Also the Vancouver cheesecake is over buttered & the pies are very bland. It was very clear I was not welcome in this establishment as an American. I forgot I was wearing my hat with an American flag patch on it and it all made sense I work customer service so I try not to say much because usually it's possible the person is having a bad day but this was awful service. The employee taking orders ignored me after standing in front of the glass for 6 or so minutes. She then spoke to the cashier saying " I don't know what they're doing" as if it was my fault for her not asking for my order. So I ordered some cheesecake and paid, but as soon as I walked away from the cashier she said to the next customer "someone screwed up the order of the line". Deserts here are great! The coffee and drinks are nice. What's going on Afterthoughts The customer service has been lacking. My wife came in for a late date on a Friday night around 10 pm. (It's all we can manage with a baby). The staff were already flipping chairs up onto tables by the time we sat down. I understand prepping for closing , but usually that's done 10 minutes prior to shutting down, not 45 minutes. Customers came after us and left due to lack of available seats. No better way to make people feel unwelcome than to stack chairs near their heads while they try to enjoy a date. read more

Came in with my family. The persons behind the counter didn't seem all that pleased to see us. I tried to engage in friendly conversation but got no response, just blank faces. Normally this wouldn't bother me too much but to have a tip option on the machine and give me that kind of service put me off. Got my cinnamon dolce cheesecake, which tasted really good, however my second bite in and I discovered a hair. Call me crazy but I'm ok with removing it and continuing on as I understand accidents happen and it doesn't really bother me, but my 5th bite in and I found another. So obviously someone isn't wearing their hairnet, and if that's the case, it makes me question their health policies. All in all, the deserts were really good which is why I'm giving it 3 stars. The cheesecake is what I came for and I ended up leaving with 3 pieces to share for later. I got the New York cheesecake which is baked, maybe I'm being picky but it was a bit over baked for my liking. However the Vancouver cheesecake, which is unbaked, is creamy and delicious. The coffee is nothing special, kind of boring but a drink is necessary with cheesecake. The ladies working were helpful and gave me their opinions when asked. A bit pricier than I was expecting but one piece filled me up. Will be coming back next time I'm in Abbotsford. read more

My wife insisted that I go to Afterthoughts to buy a strawberry birthday cake for our 3 year old daughter. I commented that I could find a wide variety of choice at Save-On Foods, but she insisted I go to Afterthoughts. She told me it was on Gladwin, but on two different days driving up and down Gladwin, I could not find it. Looked for it on Google Maps, and got the address 3050 Gladwin. On arriving there, I find that it is indented, or recessed one whole block east of Gladwin, part of a commercial mall, not visible from Gladwin at all. Entered the parking area, but there was not one available parking stall, all were taken. Drove around the back to where some apartment blocks were, and parked there. Four minute walk into Afterthoughts Gourmet Desserts, where I find it to be a posh dessert cafe, with tables for patrons. Get in line behind two people, who are in front of me facing the display cases where the desserts are shown. Could not find anything under $ 6.75 but did spot a large strawberry cake. Actually, it is a cream cake with six strawberries on top. Each of the two ladies ahead of me were ordering a full lunch meal, so each took maybe three minutes to be served, then they moved to the right to pay for their order and pick up the food. I move ahead to the display counter, eyeing the large strawberry cake [ as big as our Brother printer for our computer ]. Another customer enters the shop, and heads straight to the area by the cash register, pausing there. The staff person behind the counter gives me a quick glance, making eye contact for about 0.4 seconds, then walks over to the newly arrived lady at the cash register and says warmly "Have you been served yet ?" She replies no, and then another 2 - 3 minutes pass while she is being looked after. Then after satisfying that lady, the staff person comes over to me and asks "How can I help you ?" in a warm, friendly manner. I respond that " I am not quite sure how things work here, as I have been standing in line for about 6 - 7 minutes, but you went over to serve that lady [ I gesture to the right ] as soon as she walked in." Response was kind of neutral as in "Oh, I did not realize that." ( Not realize ? She made eye contact with me and then elected to serve the woman who just walked in. ) I explained that I am looking for a strawberry cake for a birthday, and note the large cake in the display case. I ask if they have a smaller strawberry cake, perhaps in the back ? The response ( all smiles and warm tones ) is that "No, this is the only strawberry cake we have." I ask if I may buy this strawberry cream cake, and am told that you probably do not want to do that as we sell it by the slice, and to buy the entire cake would cost you $ 100. I smile in reply, raise my hand in a small wave and walk out of Afterthoughts. Strong feeling that I have wasted my time entirely [ 20 minutes ], that this shop is extravagantly over-priced, and that I will never come back here again. I go to Save-On Foods, and find three candidates for the strawberry birthday cake. I purchase the largest one at $ 25.99 which is a true strawberry/vanilla cream cake in perhaps four minutes elapsed time. Never will go back to Afterthoughts Gourmet Desserts. Tell my wife the story two days later, and she admits she has never been there herself, but agrees that she also will never go to Afterthoughts Gourmet Desserts. Waste of 20 minutes time. I have been afterthoughts many times in the past. It's the place to go when craving something sweet. The store is has counter with the desserts on full view. Look to see which one you would like and then approach the cashier to request your dessert and a drink if need be. I usually get their seasonal cheesecake. It was very delicious with just enough sweetness. The cheesecake is rich though! One slice is enough or even enough to share with someone. I haven't tried their other desserts. Stear clear from the so-called savory items as they don't have enough flavour and taste bland. The service here is something else. Don't expect big smiles and warm greetings from the staff. I admit that the decor is dated, the music is bland, and some food selections are generic. However, if you want a good cheesecake, the selections and flavours here are fantastic. They have a "Vancouver cheesecake" - which is simply a soft, plain cheesecake that is served with a sauce - which is always a winning choice, especially with their potent strawberry and raspberry sauces. I want to like Afterthoughts, I really do. It has a great concept and huge selection. The problem is, it's all mediocre. There is nothing extraordinary about any of their desserts or drinks. I have gone in numerous times and although quite snobby of me, thought, 'I could make it better (and cheaper) at home.' Service leaves something to be desired. I am a bread pudding freak and once enquired whether their version was moist or not. I got an odd look and "I don't like the word moist." Fine, you don't like the word but can we get past that and let me know what the bread pudding is like? Result: It wasn't moist and...yes, I could make it better at home. Not a fan of all the signs outside the shop declaring the outdoor seating is just for Afterthoughts customers. While I understand the reasoning behind it, it's quite an off-putting attitude to display to potential customers walking on the side-walk.
