I visited Afterthought Brewing Company on 6/24 during the day. I visit craft breweries as a hobby (approximately 170 with this brewery at the time of writing). Afterthought with its very specific focus on a specific type of beer (saisons) reminded me of Funk Factory Geuzeria in Madison. It's also similar with its narrow focus as Supermoon Brewing in Milwaukee. I like and appreciate this very specific artisan style brewery even if its beer doesn't match my tastes. I did try a taste of 4 in a flight & probably liked one that had mild apricot notes. I do appreciate the artisanship of its brewer and its existence in offering something different from so many other breweries focused on fads like 50 kinds of hazy IPA's or pickle sours. At the end of the day, do something well and the patrons will appreciate it. Here's what I DON'T appreciate: I don't like being served a flight of four WHERE EACH 3-4oz selection IS PRICED DIFFERENTLY! This is deceptive when the bartender doesn't tell you and the PRICES ARE NOT LISTED ON THE TAP LIST ON THE LED SCREEN! I caught this after given the pours that I paid $23 with tip for four tastes with some costing more (2 at $5, 1 at $3, and one at $6). I've not encountered this at any prior brewery without being told explicitly that flights were individual pours priced differently. In that case, I've been given sips with an option to buy individual pours. It's frustrating to expect a flight to be a flat price and find out I am paying about $5-$8 more for a flight of four than any other brewery in the region. Usually, a flight is $12-$15. This makes me feel robbed. Otherwise, I was given a free brewery sticker upon request (that I paid for with the added price of the pours). I do not believe it was Wi-Fi accessible. The appearance of the establishment was a that of a medieval shed and appeared to camouflage with its surroundings, making it at first hard to locate. Parking was adequate. I don't plan to return and would caution visitors about prices and how individual pours can be more expensive (EVEN FOR A FLIGHT)!
To clarify as to whether I misunderstood or didn't adequately read the materials: When I asked for a flight, I also asked 'is it four?' and was told 'Yes' and proceeded to pick 4 to try. The server did not clarify that I was picking 4 separate prices for individual pours. In every other brewery I've visited, the server acts as liaison for my experience of the establishment. I would strongly recommend that their management better train the servers or improve their signage & materials. IF YOU DON'T DO FLIGHTS UNLIKE 99% OF OTHER SMALL CRAFT BREWERIES, MAKE SURE IT IS HIGHLIGHTED CLEARLY AND YOUR STAFF IS TELLING NEWCOMERS. read more
