    Chapati Wrap
    Sophia P.

I love Afro deli! It's so conveniently located since most of my classes are in Moos tower and they have delicious veggie friendly options. My favorite is the chapati wrap with falafel, always so filling and I love how it comes with fries. I am usually able to make this into two meals which is great and the wraps themselves are very filling. The price is pretty good too compared to a lot of other food places nearby. I usually order online and it's ready by the time I walk over. Staff is always very friendly too and it's easy to find comfortable seating inside. I walk over so parking definitely could be difficult since it's all paid street parking.

During a trip to Minneapolis in July 2025, I was staying at the Graduate Hilton hotel that is very close to this restaurant. On one evening, a couple of friends and I decided to have dinner there. When we went, there was a small crowd. We immediately got a table and ordered four dishes. The food came pretty soon and were plentiful. Each dish was very tasty. Also, it was unbelievably cheap. We were very happy with our meal and would gladly go back there.

Great food, fast service, and a can't-miss place! I came here for lunch during a weekday and it's a popular spot! I'm so impressed by the gentleman that took our order- he didn't need to give us a number or anything, he just remembered every person's face and brought them their order. We ordered the chapati wrap and Somali steak sandwich. Both were flavorful and excellent. Fries were the right amount of crispy. We'll be back!

    Delicious chicken curry

I'll start with the food first. I ordered the chicken curry, chapati wrap ( it came with a salad) and the vegetable sambusa. The Chicken curry perfectly seasoned with super tender. It was was very good. The Chicken chapati wrap was absolutely delicious and the vegetable sambusa was also delicious. The only thing that I didn't like about this meal was the salad wasn't that great. The service was top notch and the prices are actually very good. I hope I'm able to come back here again on Friday before I fly back home on Saturday. I would like to take some of the vegetables sambusas back home.

Will I be coming here again? Was the food tasty? Was I full after eating half? YES YES and YES. DELICIOUS, affordable, and huge portions! When I went, it was also really busy but I only waited ~5 minutes for my food. I don't know what the heck is in that red sauce BUT IT IS FREAKING DELICIOUS. Better than Chick-fil-a, Canes, and In-n-Out sauce! It is liquid gold. I got the Gopher Lamb Gyros ($8) and it was super tasty and huge! The veggies on top were fresh, the fries were super crispy, the yogurt sauce was the perfect tangy-ness, and the lamb gyro was too-die-for. I would say the most popular items are the Gopher Lamb Gyros, Somali Steak Sandwich, Steak Chapati Wrap, and the Sambusas! I will definitely be back to get all the Sambusas. They have a deal where you get 3 for $6.

The gyro was awesome, staff was friendly, and the place had a really good atmosphere. Would love to come back and try more of their options.

Afro Deli is a go-to restaurant for me! Normally I'd go to the St Paul location but during the pandemic, this Minneapolis location is much closer to me now that I'm working from home. THE FOOD My usual pick of entrees are the Afro Steak Dinner & Chicken Fantastic. I like the mix of 2 very different flavors (one creamy & one not). Both are flavorful. A must-get is their sambusas. Crispy outside, flavorful inside. I prefer their beef filling but their vegetarian ones are good too. Sambusas come with a green chili hot sauce which you can request even if you don't order the appetizer. PROTIP is to put the green sauce on everything! The fried plantains are candied without being too sweet & have a nice crispy outside as well. The one thing that was just ok were the regular fries. If you get fries, get the sweet potato ones! You can actually taste the sweet potato and those were a hit in my household. THE EXPERIENCE Afro Deli's online ordering from their website is super slick. Once I submitted my order, a message said it would be done in 15 mins but it was a good decision to go over there at the 25 min mark. They were putting my order together when I was there so I maybe waited 5 mins. If it's during meal time, just err on going 10 mins later. The employee working the cashier was super friendly, chatted a bit with each customer while busily bagging-up our orders. The only downside is that you're in Dinkytown so have to find & pay for street parking. It's 75 cents for 15 mins. SAFETY Their COVID-19-related precautions include hand sanitizer stations & all their employees wear masks. They have many signs saying to stay 6-feet apart from each other (which customers followed) & that you need to wear a mask inside the restaurant. They also have a designated door to exit so folks are flowing in one direction through the space. OVERALL So glad to see that Afro Deli is continuing to do business during these hard times for local businesses. Not only that, but they are also doing a lot of community service and making meals for kids who were hurting from not having school lunches. Let's continue to support this Black-owned business and the St Paul location as well. When you order from Afro Deli, you can be rest assured that you're also giving to a community-oriented business. Rooting for you Afro Deli!

Everything in my order was amazing!! I ordered two sambusas (a veggie and a chicken) and the chicken curry. As a note, the sambusas aren't spicy but the sauce they give you is made the mistake of dipping way too much so they were FIREY but the flavor in them was amazing so I hope to order them again. The chicken curry was SO GOOD. I had no idea what to expect. It's almost sweet? And the veggies are cooked to perfection, they're so soft. I was hesitant because I don't like eggplants very much but it was so worth it. My order was via delivery with DoorDash so I'm not sure of their Covid policies inside the restaurant but the food was awesome and I will definitely order from them again.

Soooo good. The servings are gigantic! The flavors blend so well together. And the sauce! You won't regret trying this place out if you hadn't already. From the rice to the gyro, everything was perfectly cooked. Using a chappati as a form of wrap is genius, I've never had it that way before.

Veggie sambusas, still crispy on the outside when I got home with plenty of lentils on the inside
    Cassie M.

This may sound funny to say about take out, but one of the best things about Afro Deli is the friendly counter service! The other best thing, of course, is the reliably awesome food. I've never had a bad meal in 8 years of enjoying this place. This was my first time visiting this particular location, and although there is no parking on the street in front, it was easy to find a spot on the next cross street. I previously frequented the St. Paul shop and former Minneapolis location, but was just as pleased with this experience. Given the pandemic, I ordered ahead of time and only popped in for a minute to quickly pick it up. The kind gentleman who took my order on the phone was friendly, and my meal was hot and ready for me upon walking in the door. Everything looked remarkably clean inside and signs clearly labeled all of the distancing protocols. Though the interaction was brief, it was a happy one. Everyone is always smiling here - even through a mask. I raced home to immediately devour this tasty meal while it was warm and fresh. The veggie sambusas were still crispy on the outside, packed with lentils on the inside. The veggie fantastic lives up to its name. Full of delicious veggies and cheesy sauce over a bed of perfectly cooked yellow basmati rice. And I still have half left for lunch tomorrow. Yummm as always!

The server at the front is approachable and can describe the dishes and is very prompt with service. And the food is spicy yet balanced, savory but not over seasoned. The prices are very affordable for the amount of food you get! We were very happy with the beef over rice and the samosa style pastries. Great food and a unique experience.

Most importantly, they had the menu of the previous restaurant still up - a Mediterranean place it looked like - and the woman in charge said they could make Somali versions of most of that. So I asked for a chicken sandwich using the Somali stewed chicken and my partner got the chicken stew plate (suqar I think). Both were delightful, and the Somali-styled black tea was deliciously like a chai tea. Highly recommend.

We got to that door just as the owners were closing up shop, so we asked for a nearby suggestion and were directed down the block, to the other side of the protest. My friend promptly forgot the name of the suggested eatery, and I was busy focusing on the protest and feeling so deeply proud of our community, so we simply meandered before arriving at Hamdi. Abdiladif had such a bright, warm grin spread across his face as he welcomed us into the space and led us to a back table that you wouldn't think there was a fight for human rights occurring right beyond the walls. Or rather, it's possible that he realizes that, yes, there was, and every voice outside and every visitor inside is proof of where this community stands in this fight. Yeah, okay, that'd be reason for me to grin, too. The menu was simple. A few protein options. A few vegetarian dishes. A few drinks. A complimentary cup of Somalian tea that you could refill at will at a station conveniently located at the middle corner between the two dining rooms. No prices beside the menu items, which was puzzling. Abdiladif was so friendly and happy to answer our many curious questions, offer clarifications and suggestions. We ordered the two goat dishes. One ended up being out of a key component, likely the happy result of several tables filling up before ours, so we ended up with two of the same goat dish. They weren't really named, so "goat" was all we went off of on the menu. My friend paired his with the spaghetti, while mine was with chapati, hummus, and creamed veggies. My friend ordered mango juice. The sweetened Somalian tea was plenty delightful for me. We both preferred the creamed veggies in the same bite as the hummus. The chapati seemed somewhat dry and needed the hummus. The goat was decently flavorful and tender, though not juicy. My friend struggled a bit with the larger bones on his pieces. We both loved the tea so much that we continued chatting while sipping on one last sweet refill, after learning that a dessert menu no longer existed. Before we leave, I leave my jacket and to-go container of lamb meat at our table to use the restroom. I return to my jacket missing. Baffled, I figure my friend had grabbed it. I turn to grab the to-go box and go pay on my way out. As I turn back towards the main dining room, a diner from a neighboring table within the room runs back in and makes a beeline for me. He's holding my jacket, folded tidily. Sheepish, he explained that he thought I'd forgotten it and had run out of the restaurant with it to look for me. It's unfortunate that painful times like these exist, but it's also beautiful to see community come together in light of that dark. There are several Somali places in this area, many other ethnic spaces to support in the Twin Cities. My friends and I look forward to getting to know a great many more.

There is a large paid lot right next to the restaurant, so parking was easy. We did arrive early--right at 5, so that probably helped. We were seated pretty quickly as well. As others have noticed, the service is quite slow (there seems to be only one person working the front of the house), though that felt like it was part of the experience--there was a distinct "gathering place" vibe, and there were plenty of regulars who were engrossed in conversation... it seemed like everyone was family there. The decor added to the family/community feel, with art, textiles, and wicker ware all contributing to a homey feel. Of course what you're really wondering about is the food. It's quite tasty. We started with the veggie sambusas, which were hot and crispy and came with a spicy tomato chutney that was just delicious. We also ordered the fule, which was quite tasty and filling. I loved the seasonings and textures. My favorite dish, though, was Dilla's Mix. It was absolutely beautiful to behold thanks to the jewel-toned beets and golden squash, and the juices of the veggies combined with the spices to create a glorious sauce. It was very comforting and oh-so-satisfying. Of course, all was served with springy injera to scoop it up with. Their injera is a bit lighter and milder than some that I have had elsewhere, but it does the trick nicely. As others have mentioned, Dilla's serves entrees in their own dishes, which is great if you are a group that likes to share.
