When I was looking for a good shawarma place in Pickering, a search of positive reviews led me to Afghan Kebab and Shawarma. Clearly, we made an excellent choice, because my entire family was so pleased when they dug into their meals! We ordered online and, like mostly everything else that I've ordered on line, it would likely be better if I ate in-house or even picked up my order. However, it was, nonetheless, excellent, satisfying, flavourful food. Here's why its worth 4 stars: My husband ordered a 2 falafel combo, and reported that it was done perfectly. The falafel balls were plump, crispy and tender, and the sauces that he ordered complemented the wrap perfectly! Next time, he said, he will order turnip. The turnip wasn't listed as pickled, but actually it is, and it really enhances the foods. My son said that his chicken shawarma was "one of the best that I"ve had in Pickering." However, he mentioned that he would have preferred the pita to be more robustly toasted. This, however, could have been a result of the wait for delivery. My duaghter had wings and fries. She loves her food extremely seasoned, and added MSG to hers, but otherwise found them to be excellent. I ordered the chicken shawarma plate. I chose tabbouleh rather than salad, and that was excellent, and very generous with the parsely. the chicken was juicy and flavorful, and the rice was beautifully cooked, with long grains that did not stick together at all. I have tried, and never succeeded, to get this same non-sticky and long grained finish on the rice, so the rice was a treat. The turnips and pickles perfectly complimented the dinner. Although the menu doesn't stipulate, the turnips are pickled and very tasty Overall, this is an excellent restaurant, and an outstanding shawarma place. It's family run, and I really enjoy supporting local restaurants. It is conveniently located at Whites and Kingston Rd.. There's plenty of parking, but not always totally close to the restaurant. Even though I live not too far away, it's been years since I've eaten here, hence this is my first review of this place. Although I don't eat Afghan or Middle Eastern cuisine regularly, I do enjoy it. With three vertical rotisseries, the house specialty seems to be chicken shawarma. It looked good, but I had a craving for beef so I ordered the Beef Kebab, served with with rice, salad, and a choice of naan or a drink. The beef kebabs are made to order so it took a few minutes. At least I knew it was fresh! The included salad is also assembled as ordered, with your choice of ingredients.The seasoned rice was also freshly made. The entire plate was dressed with a variety of seasonings and sauces. Finally, the meat was placed on top and also dressed with sauces. Nice! Everything was delicious and I could see that it was obviously freshly made to order. The meat was well seasoned, tender, juicy, and flavourful, especially with the sauces on it. I even enjoyed the salad, where every component of it seemed fresh. This was a very good, flavourful meal. Beyond the good tasting food, the two fellows behind the counter were friendly and engaging. This place has been around for ages, probably around when the plaza was first built. I should have known that it would have been a winner from its age but I suppose I was always pulled away by the bigger, flashier signs for Swiss Chalet and the combination Wendy's/Tim's next door. I decided to give them a call to place a pickup order on a Saturday night. Someone answered the phone and quoted us a time for 15 minutes for 2 mains. They are also on Skip the Dishes. The inside of the restaurant has tables cleared away and there is no indoor dining. The restrooms are also closed off at this time. There is a touch-free hand sanitizer dispenser right at the door. The employees are separated by a plexiglass barrier that goes all the way around the counter and protects the delicious looking shawarma too. Our order was already boxed up for us and ready to go. I had ordered the Shawarma Fries which were topped with garlic sauce and a bit of hot sauce. I felt like there was a good ratio of fries/meat. The chicken was very tasty. My boyfriend had the Shawarma Plate which came with rice and a salad. They made sure to pack the container really well. The salad was fresh, the rice was a tasty base in its own right, and there was plenty of chicken to feed him and his girlfriend that didn't order enough food lol. read more

Since there's not many Shawarma places in Pickering, I was curious to try this place out. I came here on a Friday night when I was craving a shawarma but didn't want to venture out to Scarborough to grab one. The restaurant itself was pretty busy with its usual customers which I was glad to see. I got the shawarma sandwich special (2 sandwiches for 11.99) as well as a falafel sandwich ( $5.99). All together it came out to $20.30 which I thought was pretty reasonable. The shawarma itself was tasty, had good flavor thanks to the garlic sauce. I will say however, they are bit stingy with the tahini sauce, I don't know if it is because the squeeze bottle they use has a small cap, or they are just stingy with the sauce, but even after asked for lots of sauce, the falafel sadnwich and second shawarma were pretty dry on the inside. Pro Tip, If you're looking for an authentic shawarma taste, be sure to ask them to add turnips and pickles. For some reason, they don't automatically add them when you ask for everything, which is a bit strange. So overall, I think this place gets a solid 3 from me. It was an okkk experience. The staff were friendly, the service was fast , but the quality of the food wasn't out of this world. However, I do think it's a pretty good option for shawarma in Pickering. read more

Honestly I love going to this place. One day, I was randomly in the area and starving. So I was actually going to the Wendy's across the street and it caught my eye. The first time I went in, I got a chicken shawarma wrap. I was shocked to find that it tasted very authentic and so juicy. Nothing is worse than dry chicken in a shawarma, and this was definitely NOT dry. The chicken was soooo good. The parsley thing was fresh and they made it spicy, adding to its delectability. This time, I went in for a falafel shawarma wrap. Once again, I wasn't disappointed. It was very good. The falafel was made to order, the wrap was grilled well. The people behind the counter were polite. I enjoyed my wrap. My goal for this place is to go through the different items in the menu and I anticipate to be a pleasant challenge. read more

As much as it saddens me to write this, I feel I must. We came here a few weeks ago only to find that this restaurant has now changed hands. I ordered the Tandoori Chicken again anticipating the wonderful food coma I had once experienced with this dish... unfortunately, it fell short of 'heavenly' this time. I was left feeling, sort of, just... meh. I was hoping that it was just a one-off, a bad day perhaps, so I decided to leave it a week or so and try them again. We came back last week, again for the Tandoori Chicken (using it as a benchmark). The food was good but nowhere near what it had once been. Don't get me wrong, the food IS still good and I will continue to come here but it's simply not as good as it was. The rice isn't as good as it was, the seasoning and flavours aren't as good as they were and the hot sauce isn't as good as it was. The service? Nowhere near what it was. I miss the charismatic gentleman that used to be here every time we came. The level of service we received from him contributed to the overall experience and the 5-star rating I had given not too long ago. They've gotten stingy on their toppings. The shawarmas used to be so big and full of toppings I needed two Hands to eat it. Now, I can eat it with one hand with still room in my hand. Beef tikka with salad, rice and naan for $12.99 I got the meal to go so while I was carrying the meal to my car I felt how light my bag was. I found the portion to be very small. The weight is way different when I am carrying Chinese food. The naan was stale. Even after putting in the microwave it could not be saved. It was so tough that by the time I finish eating half the naan my jaw was sore from all the chewing I had to do. Same goes for the the beef. It was tough and chewy but alot better than the naan. The best part of the meal was the salad so you can tell how disappointing this was for me. read more

Afghan shwarma is located in the Swiss Chalet plaza juat east of Highway 2 and whites road in the storefront that used to be Mr. Sub. There aren't many shwarma places in Pickering or Ajax so I was pleased when this place opened up. I came in on a weeknight and decided to just get a shwarma wrap. The two guys behind the counter were friendly while I paid and they made up my shwarma. The shwarma itself was tasty, had good flavor and they had grilled it in its wrapper for a few minutes after making it, which gave it a nice overall warmth that brought the flavors together. The hot sauce on here was good, as were the tahini and whatever other sauce they put on. I get the works on my shwarma so it was very tasty, a few too many onions but that's just me. No matter where you get it from, shwarma always ends up being messy! This was no exception. Yummy delicious juice coming out the bottom from the shwarma itself and all the tasty sauces you get! While this place was good (and the price right), its not the best shwarma I've had so I"m leaving it with a three star. I'm going to head back and try out some other dishes in the near future and see if they can blow me away with anything from their menu. Note: they did say that you can call your order in ahead of time for faster pickup, which is a nice option to have at a place like this. read more

How do i start with this review? My girlfriend works in the area and i kept seeing this place and always wanted to try it. So one day i did. Took my girlfriend for a lunch date. This is around mid March 2014. There wasn't any customer at the time, its actually just me and my girlfriend. I decided to get the tandori chicken... This is my second visit in about two weeks. I had never been before but decided to check it out. The owner suggested I try his Chicken Shawarma. He cut it off a spit and than grilled it and put it in a fresh pita with various ingredients that he says they prepare daily themselves. It was than put onto a panini type press and grilled even more. Very tasty. I also opted for a naan bread with garlic spread that is house made. Very garlicky and very good. Got a shawarma from here tonight but I felt it was quite underwhelming. The wrap wasn't nicely put together and the service was slow. On top of that none of the flavours seemed to stick out to me. Since the new management have taking over this place the Shawarma's and Kebab's are much better..fresh salads ..fresh Chicken and excellent home made sauces. ( Green Sauce and Tomatoes Sauce special of the house) Fast, reasonable and a healthy choice and great costumer service. I used to love this place. The food is good the owner is is nice guy. But he probably messed up by hiring this one guy that constantly messes up orders and blames the customer for not ordering correctly. So after this guy messed up my order 6 times I gave up and stopped getting any food from here. After 6-7 mths I felt like having a shawarma and called them to order for pick up .. I am very impressed. My wife picked up a Kebab and rice plate and falafel and chicken shwarma wraps for me. Everything was actually really amazing . I asked for extra tahini on mine and it was not soggy at all but I could taste the extra sauce. The falafel was soft and yummy not dried out at all . We will be going back for sure. The new people were not as friendly. The chicken and rice replicate from nyc was not the same. The chicken was very dry and the rice didn't have any taste. They also didn't give me the extra sauce I usually get. Will not be coming back here. And after seeing that gross raw chicken picture I will not let my friends or family come here either. Afghan Kebab recently opened up and I can't stop ordering from them! They have reasonable prices. Their beef and chicken Kebabs and chicken boti are nicely seasoned. The rice and salad are generous portions. This a great healthy option for dinner or lunch and they've also recently started opening on Sundays which is rare for mom and pops in Pickering. The only thing is I find their Tandori quarter chicken legs often comes looking and tasting dry because they are fried. The owner is friendly and hard working. read more

Much like Adele, I had a roller-coaster of an experience. My fiancé and I were regulars (2-3 times per week) before, and couldn't get enough. I would order the chicken shawarma and my fiancé always had the butter chicken. We had one great experience after another and I even started going out of my comfort zone slowly trying new dishes. And one day we arrive and see new people (we assumed they were new employees, but turned out later its new owners) at the service counters, and the nice man who was always there, nowhere to be seen. We gave them 3 tries. The first time the service was slow and clumsy, and the food was just Ok comparing to before, but we figured "hey, these guys might be on their 1st day on the job, let's give them a break". The second time we came in, in addition to the extremely slow and clumsy service, the chicken shawarma looked sad, the salad was buried under a mountain of cabbage and the rice was bland. Not wanting to give up, we came in on the 3rd time, and that was just sad. We were the only customers in the store this time, and waited for 25 minutes for the 2 "fast food" dishes. The shawarma was previously cut off the roll, put on the side, and when I ordered it was pulled out of some hole and thrown on the flat top. Needless to say it was dried and all of the spices got cooked out of it. My fiancé's butter chicken had the "fresh out of the can" taste, and the rice had a grease film in it (yuk). read more

Was looking forward to this place given the reviews. I'll start with the good: Large portions, and fair price ($11 dinner plate). Now the bad: meat was dry(flavourfull but very dry), rice lacked flavour, naan tasted like dry pizza crust and the salad dressing was straight from the no-name bottle. And finally the terrible: This is the most disorganized place I've seen in a while. With 8 of us ordering it took almost an hour for the last persons shwarma to be done. The person making the shwarma nearly burnt a friends because she wants you to tell her when to stop cooking it (but doesn't tell u this ahead of time, just puts it on the grill and hopes you catch on). In another epic screw up they ended up giving 4 orders of onion rings to one person, and only after half the plate was finished did the cook explain that it was meant for all the orders. I'm full so there is that. But I feel sorry for people who have to settle for this and don't have a place like Bamiyan kabob. Bamiyan is a restaurant that knows how to get business done, certainly not like this mess. read more

I've been to this place many times and now that they've got busy its not the same service. Especially during lunch hours, more you go the worst it gets. They treat regular customers like crap once they know they have your business. more you go the portions only keep getting smaller. Couple of times I sent my co-worker to buy my lunch and man i tell you the portions were much larger than i get as every time i go they know my face and they know i'm a repeat customer. Few days back i went earlier than usual and they had little bit of meat on one of those skewer and a fresh batch on the other one and clearly the one with little bit of meat looked really dry and old, so i asked if i can have the fresh batch and the response i got was they are from this morning. i was a bit surprised that they had gone through at least 25lbs of chicken breast by 12 noon but i was stupid enough to believe the guy and when i took it back to my work place meat was dry and didn't taste that good as usual. i doubt that i'll ever visit this place again. Portion size is smaller compared to other shawarma spots. Found them to be very stingy on toppings and taboule salad don't ask for extra anything. We didn't like he prepared the dish, literally slapping garlic and hummus sauce anywhere, my salad had a glob of garlic sauce on side and a baby squirt of hummus. Recently retried their food after not going for a while (since there new management changed) and the food was delish! You get a lot of food for a reasonable price. The workers were very friendly.
