I absolutely love this place. I still need to visit their other location on Burnett, as I…read moreunderstand that it's bigger, but this one's closer to me and it has everything I need. I come here for their selection of onigiri, natto, miso, kombu, bonito flakes, tofu, nori, togarashi, furikake, Japanese curry, sake, Japanese beer, sweet rice cakes, ramen, and just looking for something fun I've never tried before. Just be sure to follow the directions when opening an onigiri so it will stay in one piece. But oh those are so good. I even like the one that's basically just rice, seaweed and mustard greens. How they make something that simple taste so good, I'll never know. The layout is well-organized. Aisles, refrigerator and freezer sections are each relatively small, but packed with options. Each aisle I walk or door I open is an adventure that I spend a few minutes on, and I still discover new delights every time I visit. The staff here is nice, too. One lady walked me through their natto options very patiently. One was giving free samples. And the sweet lady checking me out at the register must have said Dōmo arigatō a dozen times during our brief transaction. One ingredient I bought reminded her that she needs to pick up the same for herself as she's making char siu tonight. And now I'm online looking for char siu recipes because it turns out I have all the ingredients; I just need the pork. I drive an hour each way to come here, but its totally worth it! My trip out is filled with anticipation an my trip back includes onigiri. Then I get home, put away my "haul," open an Asahi Super Dry and then I cook up a delicious Japanese meal :-)

This week's flavor was Red Bean and Matcha, and HOLY WORD-I-SHALL-NOT-SAY... this absolutely blew me out of the water. The red bean and matcha balanced each other so perfectly, and somehow tasted even better swirled together. Both cashiers were super cool too (was that Japanese I heard them speaking?). The guy with the awesome silver hair mentioned he was also from Houston, and we somehow ended up talking about how Austin's Asian scene just can't compare to how insanely diverse Houston's is. Still, it's always nice connecting over a mutual love for a great Asian environment--which Asahi definitely is. Wow--I've been here for 15 minutes, and I already have so much love for this place. My phone is literally dying as I hastily type this, but I felt obligated to spread the gospel immediately.

You sit at long tables with other people in your party or just other people who live for cheese. You learn about cheeses and you get to taste all of them along with some foods that enhance other flavors, you can even do a wine flight and purchase your favorites. The entire experience lasts about 90 minutes, and they did start a few minutes late. They did a good job describing the cheeses, the other paired snacks, and the wine pairings. They also did a good job choosing a good variety of cheeses and giving good pairings. The table crackers are refilled throughout the tasting, but nothing else on the cheese plate is refilled. The setup was not quite what I expected. There are six tables that seat ~six people, so you're going to be sitting with strangers. You start by going around the room and introducing yourself and your favorite cheese, basically as an ice breaker to meet everyone there. It was a little noisy and not intimate for a 2-person outing. It felt much more like a social gathering, and I think it would be better as a friend meeting, group gathering, or even a team-building activity. It's also a good way to meet strangers if that's what you're looking for. You get a discount on in-store purchases, which is a nice bonus. You can also take your leftovers home, so don't feel compelled to eat the entire plate like I did! The only other issue was that cashing out took a long time at the end because their POS system wasn't working well.

It was fine getting to 99 Ranch from downtown Austin but getting back to the hotel during rush hour was brutal. At least gas is more affordable in Austin though. 99 Ranch locations are indicators of Asian communities in the US. I wanted to check out the 99 Ranch in Austin before flying back home. The store is in a strip mall and within walking distance of other Asian businesses, businesses similar to the ones you'd find in Downtown Seattle and Tukwila/Southcenter. This 99 Ranch location is newer and cleaner than the one in Kent, WA. Staff were friendlier most likely because it was midday and during the week. I'm sure if it was after work or the weekend the store would have been crowded just like the HMart off Lakeline Blvd. Merch was reasonably priced. Sales tax in TX is less than WA. They also had a separate store around the corner for alcohol. With the high cost of living on the West Coast I'm sure people will continue to move to Texas. They'll find communities or create communities similar to what they've experienced prior to moving to the Lone Star State.

Super convenient setup with a bunch of options. Think of it as a slightly more authentic, low key Panda Express with much larger portions. Like most Asian fast casual spots in this style, they really pile on the food. Three Item Combo ($11.99, 10/10) - comes with a side of fried rice or noodles, or you can split it half and half. Fried rice is definitely cooked better than Panda's. Not too salty, and pairs really well with the entrees. - Orange Chicken had its own spin, a little different from Panda Express but similar overall, crunchy (though not as crunchy as Panda) and very flavorful - Eggplant was amazing, deep fried and then sauteed in a savory marinade, tender, hot, and packed with flavor - 3rd entree sauteed chicken and pepper dish, wasn't as crispy but had a nice Sichuan-ish flavor that paired well with the noodles and rice - the 2 of us were quite hungry going in, but we couldn't even finish 1 order. Portions here are genuinely huge and easily stretch into leftovers for one person Overall, if you're going to 99 Ranch for authentic Asian groceries, definitely check out their food court too. Great prices, fantastic portions, great flavor, and super convenient before or after you shop. Keep it up, 99 Ranch.

I was craving their Caesar which I love! Just enough dressing is tossed into the salad and it is topped with white anchovy filets. Perfect! You must try their baguette and butter on the side. The baguette is crispy and soft on the inside so the butter melts and the bread absorbs it perfectly! We also tried the Crab Fat Chittara which which had fermented peppers. The crab fat and melted and tossed into the pasta. The pasta was homemade. The dish was delicious albeit a bit spicy. For dessert, their beignets! SARAH MCINTOSH's bistro-bar-boulangerie is quietly tucked into the ROSEDALE neighborhood as naturally as a new favorite neighbor, serving a pared-down SNACKS-ENTRÉES-SWEETS/BREADS brunch menu 6 days a week (closed Tuesdays) along with French classics & house-made pasta evenings. The market-style bistro also offers online ordering & FIGURE 8 COFFEE with PASTRIES to-go, so many reasons to find your favorites here or there any day of the week. My first time dining in for some time, I chose MCINTOSH's finest tissue-flaked golden butter croissants, 2 ways. The BREAKFAST CROISSANT is comforting, elegant, and rich - fluffy folded farm eggs seamlessly blended with melted cheddar & tender sausage, gentle jalapeño heat lingering long from the Urfa aioli. It's an exquisite example of a brunch sandwich. Ask EMMA for her recommendations - the CHOCOLATE ALMOND CROIX (an upgrade on the standard almond croissant) includes the classic croissant with a dark chocolate center (melty even at room temp!) layered over frangipane, encrusted with a crown of toasted slivered almonds. It's heavenly & sweet - brunch perfected!
