Scummy auto repair shop. Got my car back in worse condition than I left it. Front bumper was put back crooked, parts of the bumper had paint damage that wasn't there before, drivers side headlight was loose and damaged even though they charged my insurance for a new headlight, I even caught them driving my car without permission. Took my car to another more reputable body shop a few weeks later because of my headlight jittering on every bump only to have them uncover all of the stuff these assholes charged my insurance for. I brought my F150 to David to have the engine swapped and replace the radiator, and all air conditioning components. There turned out to be some additional wiring work needed (previous truck owner smashed the cable harness and damaged the wires) With the harness no longer available from ford, David repaired the harness and replaced the split duct. The truck now runs great and the Air conditioning is awesome. I would highly recommend Affordable Engines for anyone who wants quality work at an affordable price. read more

Brought a 1997 Toyota 4Runner and an 86 Toyota Pickup and got both engines rebuilt here. Within months both engines fell apart. I liked Dave so I kept bringing cars back and didn't sue them in small claims because he said he'd fix the problems to honor the warranty. But after many tries cars always come back on tow trucks. Couldn't drive either car out of the city because the cars engines sounded like washing machines with a bunch of loose change in them. I should have sued Affordable Engines from the git go -- but I liked Dave and he was trying to honor his warranties; but my tow truck receipts prove they don't know how to rebuild engines. These guys couldn't rebuild an engine to save their lives. And that's the real problem. Dave is gone now and his Dad runs the shop and he's not cool like Dave - he makes excuses why it's the customers fault and not his shop's fault the rebuilt engine's fall apart to avoid warranty repairs -- so remember -- once they rebuild your engine -- make sure you have Triple A because the only way your car will get anywhere is with a tow truck. To see what it will be like if they rebuild your engine go to the laundromat and throw about $2,000 dollars worth of loose change in the washing machine and listen carefully -- that's what your gonna get -- that will be your "new" engine. And that's how much it will cost you. Biggest waste of time and money ever bringing my cars here. Not to mention the frustration. I feel bad leaving such an honest review but I was dumb and lost a lot of money here and want to spare other suckers the same fate. If you need an engine buy one from a reputable dealer with great reviews - because even though Affordable Engines offers a warranty on rebuilds -- they couldn't honor it if they tried -- because they don't know how to rebuild an engine. I took in my BMW here to the guys at affordable engines, and I got to say that I was definitely impressed. The level of attention to detail and how well they knew their way around my 550i gave me assurance that I was at the right place. I had a drivetrain malfunction in my BMW just didn't feel like it was running right. After plugging it into their scan tool, they noticed that I had a misfire on a few of the cylinders. Two ignition coils, and set of spark plugs later my car was running like new again. I can't begin to say how happy I am that I found this place. You could not pay me to take my car to this shop. I paid for an engine rebuild and all they did was put worn out parts on my car and caused more problems. When I got the car back (after 3 weeks) the AC was completely broken when I have NEVER had a problem with it. I paid them to fix the AC and a week later it was broken again. So I took it back and they had me wait 4 hours in their unconditioned dirty office while the part was "on it's way" after they told me it was already there. They were extremely rude to me about the whole thing and about their lack of quality service and even called me a little bitch. These are disgusting people. Beware! They WILL rip you off! read more

Went here to rebuild my engine. Paid $2000 & did nothing but more problem to my car. Ac doesnt work anymore, scratches on my car, lost the plastic covers on my battery and other things. There's a leak on my turbo now. O yea, they forgot to bleed my clutch one day and i was stuck somewhere. I called them and they want me to pay for towing. After taking my car to another mechanic and was told that my oil was changed, I felt my car lose power and not perform as well so I knew it had to be something with my engine, After having my car looked at by David here at Affordable Engines on Brandford st in Sun Valley, near Pacoima, he told me that my oil was never changed and that there was a build up of gunk inside. Long story short engine failed was under warranty he claims it's my fault bs I haave owned this vehicle for 7 years since I bought it in auction so I've been doing the maintenance right all this time. I highly recommend this shop. It was well worth the inconvenience of driving out from West Los Angeles area. The water pump on my 2009 Toyota Highlander was on its way out. Gabriel the mechanic diagnosed it in about 5 mins. Toyota of Santa Monica required the car be at the service dept for half of the day to make the diagnosis. I didn't have time for this. It made more sense to make the drive and get an answer. Once I had the diagnosis, I called Toyota to comparison shop the prices and they quoted me $860 in labor alone for just the water pump replacement. This did not include parts, anti-freeze or the thermostat. Affordable Engines replaced my water pump, thermostat, serviced my transmission and replaced my Serpentine belt for less than the $860 Toyota quoted me for labor. My Highlander is running like new. As a woman, I also appreciated their honesty. I never felt like I was being upsold or taken advantage of the way I have been by other shops and Toyota Service. As a consumer I appreciate the democratic pricing which allowed me to do more preventative maintenance on my car which already has 120k miles on it. The owner also loaned me a car for the afternoon which was very thoughtful and much appreciated. read more

if i could give this place zero or negative stars, i would. let's start with why i was here. i had a 2005 350Z that had an oil pump fail which caused rod knock. the engine needed a rebuild. i shopped around and based on reviews, gave this place a shot. i talked to the son and right away felt good about making the choice to do business here. after explaining the issue and him doing his own diagnosis it was determined the engine needed a full rebuild, which i knew before coming in. the price was $2400 which was better than i was being offered anywhere else. i was told the rebuild would include all new internals (pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, etc) and would come with a 6 month unlimited miles warranty. the work was completed in about 2 weeks, which was right on schedule with what i was originally told. i happily drove away knowing i was going to be able to enjoy my car for many more years, or at least that's what i thought. about a month in i started having random overheating issues (by overheat i mean rising higher than normal but never allowed to get into the red). i mentioned it to the owner and it was suggested i bring it in. i spent $200 having it towed in to avoid damaging the motor. they kept it a few days and when i went to pick it up they said everything everything was fine and they had it idling for an hour with no problems. i took it home. it took about 2 weeks for the problem to happen again. i was told it could be air trapped in the cooling system. i bled the system multiple times myself and still had no luck. same problem, after about two weeks of driving it would start to get hot. i ended up taking it in a second time and was given the same speech on how they cant find anything wrong. now we are approaching the 5 month mark and im still having problems and it's getting worse by the day. what was happening is the coolant would move into the overflow tank, but never get pulled back into the radiator, slowly lowering the level inside the radiator causing a hot temperature reading. i would have to pull over, wait a few minutes, and with a heat resistant glove i would slowly crack the radiator cap and relieve the pressure until i could remove the cap to fill the radiator. the more time that passed the more frequent this became to the point i had to do it every day on my 10 mile commute. meanwhile the shop no longer wants to help me because they say nothing is wrong. we get to the 6 month mark and the warranty is now expired and despite multiple attempts to get the issue resolved they have done nothing. i finally get the owner to contact me back (magically after the warranty is out) and right away he says oh sounds like a head gasket problem. let me tell you i am a very mechanically inclined person and work on my cars as a hobby. had i not lived in an HOA ruled condo i would have done this myself. i had been complaining since the first incident that the head gasket had to be the problem. the obvious signs to a blown head gasket are coolant in the engine oil or white smoke out the tail pipe, depending on where the break in the gasket was. this was a different case. no visible leaks, no coolant in the oil, no smoke out the back. after running multiple diagnostic tests i was able to determine i had what was known as a seeping head gasket. this happens when the head and block surfaces arent properly planed flat during a rebuild. with the heads being aluminum they do warp a bit from heat. well this was not done and the uneven surfaces allowed for a weak spot in the gasket and it took only a little time for a vacuum leak to occur and start causing all the problems. back to the shop and their response to this. they blamed me saying it was my fault and it was me who caused this and because it is a head gasket they would not honor the warranty even though i had been complaining since the first month of the work being done. we fought and argued back and forth on the phone for a while and he said if i brought it in he would fix it, but for $2000. i just paid $2400 for a rebuild and now he wants another $2K to repair something they screwed up and refused to acknowledge and fix in the first place. everytime i said no the price lowered a bit and finally i said screw it i'll just get a lawyer involved. that changed his tune and he offered to fix it for cost of materials and machine time, $500. i agreed. i had the car back a week later and was basically told there was no warranty and to not bring it back. low and behold about 3 weeks later same problem started happening. by this time i had already sold the condo and bought a house. i tore the motor down myself. no surface planing was done, none of the pistons were replaced, only the 1 rod that was causing knock was replaced, and only a handful of bad bearings on the crank were replaced. $2900 later i still had a bad motor. im still contemplating a lawsuit as the statute of limitations has not passed. be warned and see the other bad reviews read more

Took in my 98 Camry that needed a new engine two weeks ago and I cannot express how disappointed and upset I am with David's service. My biggest complaint is the lack of communication on David's end. I took my car in on Monday, in which David specified that it would take a week to complete. In my mind, I was surprised, because I would've assumed that it takes longer considering they were rebuilding my entire engine, but that was his word that he promised me. A week went by, and I did not hear a single word from David. I called in the following Monday, and David said that they hadn't finished it, they were still putting parts together, but that he'd hope it be done by the next day (Tues) but NO LATER that Wednesday. Mind you, I was not trying to be a difficult customer, I can understand that things may take a little longer than anticipated, but at least give me the courtesy of a phone call to let me know the updates. To be honest, I wasn't even upset after that phone call, but then Wednesday rolled around and again, NO word from David. I called again, in which David apologized and said it would surely be done by Thursday. At this point, I'm irritated. I was not at all trying to rush them to finish, I mean I still wanted them to do their best on my car, BUT AT LEAST CALL ME. Thursday comes around and I had to call again at 11:30 a.m. With that phone call, David said the engine was inside my car, they just needed to test run it, but it would be done THAT afternoon. I was so relieved to hear that. I specifically told David though to CALL ME or my brother (both numbers I had given him previously) later in the afternoon when it was finished, because I had work and would need my brother to pick up the car. OF COURSE I got no such call, and again, I myself had to call again at 5:30 p.m. Although my car was done by then, I had just gotten off work, their shop closes at 6, and there was no way I could get my car that day. I ended getting my car the next day, Friday. Surprisingly, this is still not the end. Like I said, I got my car back on a Friday. That Sunday, my check engine light came on. I called David the following Tuesday about the light. I came in that Tuesday at 12pm, and showed them my car, which had begun to leak oil. David and his mechanic realized that they had missed a cap somewhere in the back of the engine. You know, at this point, I was so beyond livid, but I kept my composure and just asked that they fix. David assured me that it would be done the following day. AGAIN, I stressed to him that he needed to CALL ME and let me know. I told him as well, if it needs to take longer than a day, that's fine, just please let me know and please just make sure that your mechanics check everything. We left that day with him again saying it would be done the next day. Similar to all my previous interactions with him, I CALLED HIM at 1:30 p.m. the next day, Wednesday, just for him to tell me it wasn't finished yet. On this phone call, i said it for the millionth time over, PLEASE JUST CALL ME WHEN ITS FINISHED, YOU HAVE MY NUMBER, YOU HAVE MY BROTHER'S NUMBER, YOU GUYS NEED TO CALL ME AND LET ME KNOW. Guess what, it is Thursday and once again David still has not called. I don't understand why it is difficult for this place to CALL THEIR CUSTOMERS who are paying them money. I should not have to be the one on every occasion to call. I stated from the beginning that if it took longer, I'd be ok, but just please please please let me know. I have two jobs, one in which I travel to different client's houses all over the valley. If they gave me heads up, then I would've found rides INSTEAD of thinking I would get my car back by a certain promised day in order for me to drive to work. All all this complaining about communication almost made me forget about the actual quality of the service I was getting. How did your mechanic forget a lid on one of the engine parts? Wow what can I say about affordable engine my experience with them has has been nothing but a nightmare the first engine of mine that they rebuilt last twenty thousand miles miles than died second engine they rebelled 8000before it died miles they had my car a a total of 45 days in their possession a total of five different times keep in mind that I live in Sacramento so I have to take the car back to them every time bottom line is they do not rebuilt engines are they fix whatever it is on your engine that's broken Toyota confirmed that my engine was not rebuilt when they check this last and the compression on my motor was way below minimum tolerances customer service is great though david is a good guy its just his work is not reliable and might not even be doing what people pay for Thank God I reported him to the State Bar I got half my money back so I say to you affordable engines has great customer service and that's about it there nothing but a bunch of crooks .....good luck read more

I called them about the issue with my engine on a 06 scion.I was told they have an engine rebuilt and ready to go.I went over dropped off the car and left.Shouldve been a few days as David advised me.Well it took 2 weeks because they didnt really replace my engine they just did whatever they did to my original engine. I payed 1700$ and the car runs worse then it did before.Has no power at all.I took the car back and left it there for another week.They told me the engine is fine,so I took the car.It was the same,went back again and they changed the vvti solenoid supposingly and that didnt solve the problem. I called them again today but they obviously wouldnt answer my call,yet when i tried from a different number they answered right away.The owner told me that the engine is good and it runs how it should.He told me its not a ferrari its a toyota.I know its a toyota and I know it doesnt run right because I have another scion tc and I can compare it. Anyway i think that their ads are misleading and their business practice is unethical and they have no idea what theyre doing. I will follow up with the California Bar office and BBB.Been there ,done that and it works. I advise anyone considering doing business with them to give it another thought. read more
