Buyer BEWARE!! Sorry I made this mistake! We had Trevor and his "team" of rookies replace the sewer line in our 80 year old house. Trevor was mostly professional in his salesmanship, albeit typical cocky contractor attitude, but that's where it ended. I was going to write this review after the initial installation in August of 2019, but was busy finishing up the renovation we had going and then lost interest. Today however we were informed by our tenants that there was standing water in our basement. So I felt it time to let everyone know how poor the service was. The project we hired Afford a Rooter for was to replace the old sewer line and install a rough in for a basement bathroom. The sewer lines were installed, but every one of them (5) had to be adjusted tighter to the wall for a proper finish. After giving them the center lines for the toilet flange, they managed to install the flange in the wrong location - TWICE! Not only that, in the end, the flange was crooked on the floor. The drain for the shower was also not installed in the specified location. The technician's (and I use that word loosely) response was "Well, you can bend the pipe into place when you place the shower pan". REALLY?? Why should that have to be done when they had full access to the broken out floor??? As I am a professional handy man, I just fixed the location and it is working perfectly now. Our current problem is that the rough in for the bathroom sink started leaking after 17 months. The damage to the carpet, padding, walls and trim work is extensive. Easily $1000.00. Not to mention missing several days of work - which no one will pay for. I called Afford A Rooter to see what they might do since we have a 5 year "warranty" and they only offered to fix the leak on the pipe - a PEX crimp that was not checked for spec (I watched them install it) and nothing else. Their response was "We are not responsible for any damages from our workmanship, only the repair itself". THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!! Afford A Rooter WILL NOT stand behind the damages caused by their shoddy workmanship. You are buying a service that involves water - some of it under pressure!! STAY AWAY from this company at all costs! Spend the extra $$ and get a reputable company that actually does a good job and has qualified staff to complete the job. It should be noted that the only time I saw Trevor the owner was for the bid. When things were going sideways during the job and I called him he would not come look at the issues. These guys hire whoever they can find to do the job. What is it to them if they have a failure? It is not their company, and I'm guessing Trevor is only paying them just enough to get the job done. I know this as I discussed the business model with one of the guys they sent to my home. He said "I have another company I need to go work for later today". So, they are not employed by Afford A Rooter but are any sub contractor they can find and in this super busy Denver market, good help is hard to find. Be sure to ask these 2 questions - "Do you actually have certified plumbers on staff?" and "Will you repair any damages cause by failures of your workmanship?" I'm certain, their response will be No to both or yes we have 1 certified plumber on staff, the rest are well, warm bodies... and as far as our liability on damages - YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN! Do yourself a favor and steer clear of Afford A Rooter! I forgot to mention that they argued with me about where to place the shower valve - had to move that too. They were EXTREMELY messy, left steel carbon dust all over the upstairs bedroom where they tied into the sewer line. Tracked mud in all over the basement, the finish on the concrete was so poor it had to be surface ground, and if that wasn't enough, they sold the extra concrete from out underneath the boss Trevor! They had several open schedules to get us taken care of the same afternoon that I requested a price quote for a slow kitchen drain. They were prompt and ran into an issue during the cabling of the pipe which they assessed and offered a remedy to fix the issue at a fair price. Will use them again. read more

BEWARE!!!! Hire this company ONLY if you want to risk being screwed over. They outright lied to us and tried to bilk $8,500 from us for replacing sewer pipes that are actually 100% fine!!! In brief, I recently hired them to do a sewer scope. I watched along with their tech as he slid the camera line in. He explained to me that every place where our original clay pipe pieces connect and are offset a bit look "really bad" and that because of that our whole pipe, going from the house to the city main line in the alley, needed to be replaced. He also told me that there was a big gap in between where the house PVC pipe should connect to the clay pipe just outside the house and that sewage was pooling in that gap (right near our foundation) and so we needed to fix that asap also. Finally, he also told us there was a tap break where our line connects to the city main line in the alley, which they would have to dig down over 10 feet to fix. He wrote me an estimate of $8,500 to fix the gap, the tap, and to do a "pipe bursting" (aka "trenchless") full replacement of our clay pipe with all new PVC pipe. As it happens, NOT ONE of these things turned out to be true!!! Fortunately, after Googling and informing myself online, I found a 2013 local news report (link below) saying that the city will watch your sewer scope video for free if you get it to them in order to give you a second opinion. After promptly watching the Afford A Rooter video I sent her, the city employee told me our pipes are currently just fine. JUST FINE!!!! WOW!!!! The offsets at the clay pipe connections, she explained, are *supposed* to be offset like that (it makes the pipes more resilient to movement). Had the connections been offset *too much* that would be an issue. But they weren't; they were offset just the right amount. She also watched a video scope they had on file of the main line and, from their vantage, she could tell that the tap connection was not an issue either. (In fairness, this one could possibly maybe have looked like a legitimate issue when seen from a camera running down our house pipe, so it's possible Afford A Rooter was being honest in their assessment on this one, but who knows). In short, the city employee told us we should do a cleaning every year or two and that so long as we did that the pipes should last indefinitely long. And when I hired another company to do a pipe cleaning, their tech watched the Afford A Rooter video and told me the "gap" wasn't actually a gap at all!! It was just a hard rubber/plastic piece that is often used to connect the PVC to the clay pipe. That's it. No gap. So in the end, Afford A Rooter tried to screw us out of $8,500!!!! And Google and the city saved us. Unfortunately, from what I've learned from researching and talking to a handful of other companies is that our experience is not so rare. It's the Wild Wild West out there as far as sewer companies go. And MANY of them are trying to screw people over (and are often successful at it - what do most home owners know about sewer pipes and offsets??). So I decided to write this review to help warn and inform others. Lesson #1: Always have the city double-check your sewer scope video if the company that makes your video tells you that you have an issue. Lesson #2: For your sewer scope, always hire a company that ONLY does sewer scopes (or that does scopes and cleaning) but NOT sewer repairs, too - this way they don't have (direct) incentive to tell you something is wrong when it isn't. Lesson #3: Always get MULTIPLE assessments and bids if it looks like you do need a repair. Before sending the video to the city, we got bids ranging from $8,500 to over $14,000!!! Do not hire this company. They are not "affordable." Technician they sent was arrogant, disrespectful, condescending to myself and he flipped off my neighbor. When I reported this incident to Sue she disregarded my complaint. Technician gave excuses as to why he couldn't complete the work. I would never treat my customers this way. I can only comment on this company's fabulous work on my kitchen waste line (they were subcontracted by my plumber so I do not have a separate price from them). They had to dig a 6 foot trench 50 feet through our prize winning landscape. The back hoe operator had to work in a narrow passage weaving between the garage , the deck, trees, flag stone stairs and a retaining wall. The workers were polite, efficient, and careful. read more

I called several different plumbers when we had drain in the basement that was backing up. Most were scheduling 2 or more days out. None could get there the same day. When I called Afford-A-Rooter whoever answered the phone said that they could have someone there within the hour. I think that it was slightly longer than that, but only because of a mix up in the address. Once there, the plumber got right to work and snaked the floor drain. I was in need of replacing a utility tub in my laundry room that was leaking everywhere - the quote that Trevor gave me over the phone was very fair, and they came out the next day to complete the project. When we called them to see why they no showed, they would simply say let me call you right back and hang up on you. Unbelievably bad. Update: Today we got repaired the (second) sink leak in a rental. The repair came to $44. The first repair from "Affordable" was $120. The next quote this week, for the "new leak" from their service manager who promptly visited and inspected to see if the warranty was valid was an additional $589. I said, no to another $589 to repair the kitchen sink leak. Called someone else: Fixed today. So, for $44 we got repaired what "Affordable" would have charged us $709 total. This place should be ashamed of themselves. I'd like me $120 back! I would never recommend this place for plumbing repairs. read more

RUDE RUDE RUDE!! from the owner to the office. Not just are they rude but they dont finish their work. I had to call evey week to try to get them to come out and finish. I ended up having to higher someone else to fix the sprinkler line that they broke. They where also supposed to come run a camera down my sewer line. The owner told me they came and everything look good. When I get home all the dirt and grass clippings where still on the clean out caps. they had never been touched. unless they put all the dirt and grass back on them. They also call harassing me to pay before finishing the job. After patching the street I figured they'd come fix the sprinkler line and pay them. Big mistake don't pay until they finished all the work. As far as I'm concerned they owe me $80 I should call and harass them. read more

I had a backed-up drain and water on my basement floor. I called them at 7:30 this morning. They said they would have someone here between 11:30 and 1:30. When I called at 1:30 I was told their guy was doing a different job that "wasn't on their schedule," and they'd find out how much longer it would take. The guy called me to say he was dealing with an emergency at an apartment and would be here "in an hour or so." My problem was an emergency, too, and I waited 6 hours for nothing. They could have let me know about the delay but didn't. There's no excuse for that. I called a different company. You should do the same. read more

After several large companies gave us staggeringly large estimates for a sewer line replacement and tried to pressure us into doing the replacement immediately, we luckily found Afford A Rooter. This company provided us a much more reasonable estimate and accommodated our schedule. Replacing a sewer line can be very stressful, but Trevor and his team made this process easy and understandable. I hired these guys to snake my drain ($99) and they promptly got their crappy equipment stuck in my mainline (dull blades and bent line). I had to crawl under the house and tear up my mainline so the two of us could pull his crappy line out. I got charged $540 and my line was still blocked. He tried to convince me I had to spend $7000 and replace the whole line - what a load of crap! I rented a sewer snake and cleared the line myself with no problem. So $540 for Afford a rooter to NOT unblock my line, another $50 to rent a sewer snake, $300 for materials to fix my mainline, and 20 personal hours dealing with this nightmare. Trust me do NOT do business with this company - they are not to by trusted! read more

WARNING TO OTHER CUSTOMERS OF WHAT YOU MIGHT GO THROUGH WITH USING THIS BUSINESS. I did work through Drain Genius and Afford-A-Rooter was used as a sub-contractor, unknown to me. I didn't authorize it or even know they had done the work until several months later when I got a note on my door saying they(Afford-A-Rooter) where placing a lien on my home. I payed the original contractor in full & have the receipts, but now these guys are after me in a very hostel way because the the original contractor didn't pay them & the two can't work it out between themselves. The Afford-A-Rooter owner, Trevor, who I talked to was really unprofessional in his threats against me. Saying that he can't even reach the original contractors, so his only option was to come after me. Funny how, after I got off the phone with him I was able to call & talk to the original contractor 5 mins later. I don't want to be a pawn in what is clearly a payment issue between two businesses. I payed! Take each other to court, be nasty there, but leave me out of it. read more

We had a frozen pipe and a situation where multiple tenants had no water. Several other plumbing companies quoted a 2-3 day wait (with no water) to even come out and LOOK at the problem. Joe was here within 40 minutes of my call with pipe-thawing equipment. When it was determined that the pipe could not be thawed, but needed to be replaced, Joe and his crew started digging immediately. They had temporary water flowing to the building right away and fixed us up without delay and for a very reasonable price. I needed to have my garbage disposal replaced so I called Afford-A-Rooter who had received good reviews from several sources. Trevor said he could have someone come out between 1-2pm and that was ok with me. At about 2pm I called the office as I had not heard from anyone and Ashley said she had just talked with the plumber and he was on the way. Rob arrived at 2:50 pm and after a couple of minutes of small talk told me the charge would be $189 after my senior discount. I said that didn't seem very affordable as the company name insinuated but as I didn't want to have to wait any longer I said to go ahead. Rob seemed very competent and in less than an hour had the job done. We ran water and turned the disposal on briefly and it seemed to work alright. I went on an errand after Rob left and came back and did a small amount of dishes in the sink. All of a sudden noticed water coming from the cabinet under the sink. Had a sinking feeling but after checking found that the hose coming from near the top of the disposal hadn't been re-connected. I connected the hose and all seems well so far. But the upshot is that $189 for less than an hours labor seems excessive ( I supplied the new garbage disposal ). Just a heads up for anyone considering using Afford - A - Rooter. read more

I had standing water in an unfinished basement, called these guys and they were there the next day. The plumber struggled with his machine and eventually left and came back with another rooter machine. He spent a least a few hours and did not leave until he cleaned out my drain as best he could (without any additional charge). There was a difference in what I was quoted over the phone and what the service man charged me though. I let my displeasure with this difference be known to the service person and I soon received a call from Trevor stating he wanted to insure I was pleased with their service and clear up any discrepancy. After our discussion, I was promptly mailed a check for the difference. These guys are 'gold' in terms of punctuality, service and satisfaction. As much as I prefer not to have drainage issues, if I do I know who to call now. read more

I'm pleased to add another 5-star review for Afford A Rooter. We had a pipe that was backing up and flooding our basement. There was no problem at all getting a plumber to our house the same day I called for an appointment. Dom came out, and fixed the problem. Dom was friendly, professional, and wasted no time getting down to the work at hand. Besides the good work that was done, I give five stars for customer service. I hadn't been in the basement when Dom finished the job, but went down there a few hours later. I saw water pooled on the basement floor, so thought the problem had not been fixed. By this time, it was after hours. I called Trevor, and left him a message saying I had water on the basement floor again. Within about an hour, Dom was back at my house to see what the problem was. To my embarrassment, the water on the floor was not from the pipe leaking again, rather it was water that got onto the floor when Dom was making repairs. Dom tested the pipe again, in my presence, and I could see it no longer leaked. Dom was very gracious when I expressed embarrassment at having had him come all the way back to my house, when there really wasn't a problem. He said it was better to check things out to be sure that everything was working properly. On top of all this, the price was reasonable. I can fully understand why Afford A Rooter consistently gets five star ratings! read more

Had the owner stop out for an underground Water leak , estimate was to repair 10' section of copper water line with Backhoe trenching to repair water main, $ 2800.00 on the day they showed up two men with shovels uncovered a leaking plastic sprinkler line in a hand dug 30" long x 24" wide by 14" deep trench, approx. 20 minutes work. The lead man spoke almost no english so my wife's questions were not answered. They replaced 24" of plastic sprinkler line, and filled in the hole , as they were packing up the backhoe showed up, not needed. They reduced the price from $2,800.00 to $1,800.00. I did not realize that laborers with shovels were valued at $850.00 per hour (although the entire job took less than 50 minutes) or that plastic sprinkler line is valued at $ 100.00 per foot. I would say this is a company to avoid, because i am certain if this had gone the other way and required more work they would have gladly raised my price. I found Afford a Rooter via Craigslist and after the free bid had Jason Toedtli come out to do the assigned job. Jason did a really great job to make sure the job got done and resolved the issue. The problem was, the job that was bid (and he thus did) was not the job that actually needed to be done. The thing that needed to be done wouldn't actually cost me about 10% of what I ended up paying and taken less than an hour. Jason was totally doing his job and if it wasn't for him, I don't think the issue would've ever been resolved correctly. Lesson learned - if you're ever having pressure issues, check your pressure release valve. Not sure if you have one? Locate your main water shut off valve and chance are it will be nearby. Save yourself a work week of trial and error, a thousand bucks you didn't need to spend and the emotional rollercoaster of trying everything else.
