I read most of the Yelp reviews on AEC Alarms. Many reviews were extremely negative and all of them were very old. To be fair with AEC Alarms, I decided to submit my own reviews as a recent AEC customer. In year 2023, AEC installed two new fire alarms systems for my two SF buildings. I dealt with Yat-Cheong Au, who was professional and responsive. Including AEC, I had three vendor proposals, and AEC was the lowest one. I decided to go with AEC and my experience has been pleasant and positive. They installed the two fire alarm systems as promised and passed the building inspections. The monitoring service has been okay too. My two systems have been online for six months and the only service issue was one time the alarm was continuously beeping after a power outage. I called AEC service and they walked me through the system reset procedure. After that, no more service issues. If I have any updated information on the AEC fire alarm systems and their monitoring service, I will post my reviews here again. read more

We've been using this company for well over 10 years. Initially they were great but as time passed, their services diminished greatly. The alarm itself works (when in working order, of course); however, their service dept. is incredibly bad. We had issues with sensors and it would take days for a technician to come out and fix it. They told us the only way to arm it is to bypass that sensor (defeats the purpose of having sensors). We had service scheduled to come out 2 days later. The main reason for this review is because they canceled that service on us AND we were burglarized last night. The burglar ripped out the keypad. We called to let them know what happened, no sense of urgency on their end to help us. We are still waiting for them to call us back since their services department was not answering. Please go elsewhere as I am about to cancel my contract. There are much better services out there with comparable pricing. read more

Look elsewhere for your security needs. Customer service is not available in the evenings & weekends, which surprised me for an alarm company. They didn't return phone calls when I left messages. I had to keep calling to get a live person. I didn't get the sense that they cared about their customers. We had a technical issue where the alarm intermittently beeped. It was an updated new alarm they had installed for additional fees. We followed their instructions to get rid of the issue but it didn't work. They were not helpful at all. Eventually we stopped using it and just unplugged the power. We had to wait until our contract was up to cancel. We had an annual contract with them; not sure if that's the norm. To cancel is a hassle. We had to call them to request a cancellation form. Then we had to email it back to them in a timely fashion (I think 72 hours). Vincent is the man! I run into some issue during Friday night out of business hours. Luckily, my phone was picked up by Vincent C. He knows the system very well. Most importantly, he is very patient with request. He basically walk through to debug the problem, one thing at one one time, and finally get problem resolved. This is Friday night otherwise I have to wait until next Monday. Highly recommend Vincent for his customer obsession, expertise and integrity!!! read more

Stay away from this horrible business and save your money, as they show very unethical business practices. The funny thing is that on their work order paper work, their motto is "Honesty and Quality", you be the judge if they had either of these adjectives. After purchasing a house which had AEC equipment already installed, we called AEC to schedule an appointment so they can show us the features of the installed Alarm. They asked for $120 per hour to provide this service, we agreed to pay that, as we were interested in activating the security service. On the day of appointment, the technician, tested the system and all was working as expected except that the backup battery needed to be replaced. They asked for $37.98 to replace the battery and we agreed to pay. After replacing the battery, the system stopped working. The technician then said that the initial hour is over, and if he had to stay longer to fix the problem (that he just caused, I might add!) we have to pay AEC Alarms for the extra time, this is obviously not reasonable so I refused and asked to speak to a manager, he called his manager and he was allowed to work an additional hour to investigate the issue. After the second hour was up, he again said that if he had to stay longer to fix the issue (that he just caused, I might add again!), we have to pay AEC Alarms for the additional time. At that time, I needed to go to work, so I called his manager Henry V. to complain, I was told by the admin who answered the phone that he may not be available for a week!!!! (I thought that was odd, since the technician just spoke to him) I left him a long message describing the issue and giving him a chance to fix the issue. And I also left the operation manager (Pui) a voice mail asking that they address the issue that AEC Alarms has caused. Neither manager have called back but they did not forget to cash the check. I reported this company to BBB and now to Yelp. Stay away, find a different better alarms company. read more

Don't use this company. I was a customer for over 6 years and cancelled my service back in May since I had closed my business. 4 months later I received an invoice. After calling I find out that they had never received the cancellation and that you're automatically renewed for a year (mine was in Feb). If I had known that I would have cancelled the service in Feb. They stated that they never receive my cancellation form back in May either. Why is it called a cancellation form if you can't actually cancel your account? They should send out a notification annually if your contract renews each year. Oh, and I was hung up on once by their billing department, put through to voicemail when I was being transferred, and a few months ago the billing department never returned my voicemail. Customer service is terrible. Go with a different company that doesn't have deceptive business practices. read more

10 months after my first review the company contacted me via message on Yelp and asked me to contact them to allow them to "work out" my issue. They are very non-specific about the type of issue and/or the help. Seriously? No. I would not use your company again if you walked on glass to my door and offered me a lifetime of free service, including my very own bodyguard who looked just like Kevin Costner (before he got old, of course). Here is a clue, AEC. Waiting 10 months to contact a former customer who actually reviewed you on Yelp indicates you either a) have run out of old customers to hound for yearly contracts; or b) think this will help your abysmal Yelp score. First time they said it didnt go through, 2nd time they said they never reiceived my call. Had no working service for over a year and still got billed. Will fight these scumbags to the last tooth. Train your employees! After being woken up at the crack of dawn by beeping one morning by our AEC alarm displaying a "Supervisory" alert, I called to see what the issue was and their customer service rep said she would have a technician remotely check the status for us and give me a follow up call with a response in a few minutes. I thought the problem would be quickly resolved... Half an hour later, I still had not received a follow up call so I called back and got a different service rep who had to transfer me back to the original rep who was "handling" my case. The rep apologized for forgetting to return my call and informed me they would have to schedule a technician to come onsite to see what the issue was. She then said another person would be in contact with me to schedule an appointment. Hours later, I had received no call from anyone so I called back AGAIN only to have their team tell me they had no availability for appointments until later on during the week. What?? At this point, I had enough of the calling back and forth and asked to speak with one of their managers who apologized and said he would do everything he could do get an appointment for me the very next day and assured me he would call me back personally. The next morning, I received a call (not from the manager) to have a technician come and assist me that day. Technician came and for an hour was "fixing" the system-this cost me $100-I called the manager expressing my displeasure with the overall services and the best thing he could do for me was take $10 off-after a few more minutes of apologizing for my experience he reluctantly agreed to take $20. I guess that counts for something? All in all, it's not about the money at the end of the day-just do your job! read more

I was a customer with AEC Alarm for over 30 years, and the company has really become worse to worst managed. We started with very satisfactory service when we started using them to monitor our home. The company continued to bill us increasing year after year with very little improvement and services until recently we had to migrate from 2G to 3G mobile service monitoring. They bumped up the fee to over $40/month to monitoring with upgrading fee, and 2 year contract. When our system was malfunctioning, I asked that they come and looked into it. They did and billed me for $140.50 just to identify that the motherboard is not functioning. They then requested that I pay $750 to replace the motherboard. I started looking for other companies, and found one I could install all components myself, and with a monitoring fee of $15.00 for basic monitoring, and $20.00 for web-enabled security management, and I only needed to upgrade to that level when I am out of town, and it will revert back to $15.00 when I return. The total package for all hardware is less than $500, less than replacing the motherboard. Hey you can save a lot of money year over year just on monitoring. I reviewed all the comments here, and now I could understand why people are giving AEC 1 star or less. Imagine they do this to a 30 year customer, what can they do to you. Get another security company, there are many more credible and customer-focused companies out there than AEC. read more

We are really happy having AEC protecting our homes as well as our businesses. They are a family own company, so their services are exceptionally personal. When it comes to trouble, they are on top of things! They will work with you personally to resolve the issue quickly. The turn around time is amazing every single time. It is also nice when they are local, their tech can be on site when the issue can't be resolved offsite. I like to call out Vincent in their tech support team to be extraordinary. You know when you work with him is he will go above his work requirements to meet your needs!! ATTN: This is a Scam!!! Do not use this company!!!! This alarm company is the biggest scam and a big pain to deal with. We had this alarm company for over 10 years and an intruder has broken into our house one night through the window. The Alarm went off, the neighbors heard it at 1 pm (they thought it was a car alarm). The SJPD get a phone call or dispatched. When we get home at 6pm after work, we called AEC to notified our situation. Customer service is was the worse. We talked to a customer representative by the name Mr. Wong with a strong Chinese accent. He didn't seem like he knew much English, so I gave the phone to my folks, which they can speak Mandarin, Cantonese and a bit of Chiu Chow. Mr. Wong pretended to not understand English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. -So when the police came, he advised us not to use this company and investigate our house. The SJPD called their dispatch personal and said that there were no alarm calls that came about our house. The SJPD officer had interviewed our neighbors and they said that the alarmed sounded like a car alarm. The next morning, Chinese speaking manager called us in the morning, We ran a few test on our alarm systems, and it all sounded off correctly. Then we asked them to come and check our windows out, and they had the nerve to asked to charge us a service fee, to come to check out our house!!!! We are on the phone, yelling and threaten to sue, and the Chinese speaker guy started stating that AEC does not cover breaking in through the window, and was not able to refund our service or send anybody to look at our situation. They tried to sell us more service and another motion sensor for $198.00 We have part ways with this company and I suggest you do not use this company!!!! Do not use this company!!! Technical service sucks big time! Absolutely not helpful and not professional. Emergency call is a joke - no one calls back after 4h!!!

If I could pick no stars, I would. I went with this company in 2006, mainly because they were local. What a mistake. The installation was horrible, but i decided to let it go, we could fix the walls that they ruined and the bad window installation. Had one case where the alarm did go off, and they contacted SJPD. There were numerous connection problems over the years, and all they would do is remote test the system, to come out would be a charge. I decided that I would cancel when my contract was up. In thier contract I knew of the 60 cancel policy. So I called, but they required it in writing. So I fax it in. Somehow, that fax was misplaced and I am stuck again in another year contract. I figure that having a company monitor my house is not a bad idea, so I just go with it. 2010 rolls along and I hit my cancellation window, I fax in my written cancel request. A few months later I get another bill, so I call. The gal there gives me the run around, but says she will take care of it, becasue guess what? They do not have record of my fax, AGAIN. Then this January I receive another bill stating that I will be sent to collections if I dont pay the year in full. They dont seem to get that I have not wanted thier service for the past 2 years, so I call, I speak to Anh who wrote the letter, she say something about a manager calling me. The next time I call, Anh is no longer with the company, big surprise. Who ever answers the phone this time says a manager named Poi will call, and he does but I am in a meeting and cant pick up. I call him back 3 more times, he is never available. finally someone who admits to being new helps me, says they will speak to the manager and call me back. The call back is pointless, all she will tell me is that I will be sent to collections, I offer to pay the year so far ( not going forward) even though I have tried to cancel twice, she has nothing to say. I want to speak to a manager, so I am put on hold for 10 mintues to have her come back and say he is not available, oh, and I will be sent to collections. I try to set up a time to call him, she cant do that says he will call me back. Nothing..... I dont want this company to have my money, part of me wants to take the credit hit to provr a point. They have horrible cutomer service and they string you along when they clearly mess up. I would not reccomend them to anyone. read more

They suggested the concord 4 system would be best for our business. It was a fast and painless install, we also paid to add a remote door lock and a glass break. Horrible company! I have tried for 2 years to cancel my service. I was told I had to cancel 30 days prior to renewal. I waited a full year to call and cancel. I was told to fax my cancellation request-which I did. I called to confirm receipt- which I was told they received and it would be cancelled. I received a bill the following month- called again and was told it was an error and would be corrected. Then I received a past due bill the next month and that I was going to collections!! No one should have to go through this much to cancel anything! They bank on you forgetting and sticking you for another year or two contract. I am contacting the Better Business Bureau on this one. read more

HORRIBLE COMPANY!!! We spent $5,000 on an alarm system and it's never worked properly. Now we have an incessant beeping that randomly comes on for no explanation. It has woken us up at all hours of the day and night and there is no solution in sight. Beware of what you sign. Not suggest to work with this company. We cancel our service before 3-year contract by my wife. This company need me to cancel the service. After I called, and they request fax to confirm it. Ironically, they charge one extra year because I called after the 3-year expiration date and they renew one-year contract automatically according to their untold contract. From the reviews here, it looks like my experience with this company is not unique. I've been an AEC-Alarms Customer for years. In the 4th quarter of 2016, they called me to upgrade my 2G radio to 3G because AT&T was shutting down their 2G service. We decided to cancel the service. So we declined the upgrade and told AEC we would like to cancel the service. The guy promised to have somebody call me back. Nobody called me back or sent me anything. According to AEC, AT&T shut down their 2G signals by 12/31/2016. So after that, the communication between my security equipment and AEC stopped. For the entire year of 2017, AEC has not been able to provide me with any service. However, they just kept charging me on my credit card. I tried to call AEC many times, but it's hard to hold a live person to talk to. I left lot of messages on the voice mail box, but nobody called me back. In June, I was finally able to talk to a live person. The lady insisted on that the contract has to be terminated prior to the anniversary date, or something like that. After explaining the situation, she said she needed to talk to the technical department to understand the detail, and promised to call me back. Again, nobody called me back. Finally, last week, after my credit card got charged again (Service till end of 2017), I was able to talk to AEC again, with both their billing department and their technical department. Now they agree (finally) to terminate my service (do they have a service???), and refund me half of what they charged in 2017. I want a full refund for 2017. As of now, I am still waiting for the manager of their billing department to call me to resolve this. AEC tells me, if a customer leave a message, they return calls 100%. My experience and the reviews here say otherwise. I will follow up this review. I am considering reporting to BBB. read more

Stay away!!! We had a terrible experience with this company. There was a technical problem with our alarm that the company could not fix - the system beeped every day at 8 AM, 6 PM, and 9 PM and would not stop beeping until we turned it off. Worst of all, we had new baby and beeping from the alarm would wake him up. They charged us $500 to try to fix, but they could not fix it and refused to let us out of our contract. read more

I have had service with this company for a few years and learned time and time again this company is not customer oriented. I picked this company by mistake because I did not have much time to do my research. Once started, I am stuck with the long term contract. The problem started from the beginning during installation of equipment. The person' ladder caused a big scratch on my wall, and he installed the wrong part on one of my window. I contacted the owner. They were not willing to come back to correct or compensate for the damage. The person who did the job tried to deny any wrongdoing. Over the years the alarm went off a few times. I did not hear from AEC and I had to call the police myself one time. I wonder if they are really monitoring anything at their end..... I am about sell my house now but they insist that I have pay for the rest of the few months until the end of the year ( even though I have completed beyond the required number of years with this company. I have been a customer with AEC alarm for over 8 years (and was also an AEC customer in my prior residence). Last year I inquired about upgrading my existing system to support VoIP phone line, The AEC sales rep provided an offer with free system upgrade and a new higher rate. At that time I was not ready to switch. As of last month I finally decided to switch over to the new system but the sales rep refused to honor the previous offer and did not seem to care about me being a long term customer. This forced me to explore other options. From the two other competitive alarm companies I spoke with, both offered zero cost or very minimal cost (less then $100) to install a new system in my house. I reflected this back to the AEC alarm sales rep and he did not care about such competitive offer and stuck to his terms. I also had very bad experience with their prior support service. When I spoke with one of the AEC technicians about compatibility of the current system with AT&T Uverse, he did not have an answer and promised to get back to me with the details which he never did. Too bad AEC, you have just lost another loyal customer and I am very happy with my new choice. read more

I like how they are a local company and you can walk in to their office and see a showroom with the different systems they sell and install. From the other reviews it looks like people either don't read or don't understand the contracts they sign. I've never had any problems with these guys. We used AEC for several years when we lived in the Bay Area. We had a number of issues but we lived with it. Three years ago we sold our house just prior to the end of the 3 year contract. About 1 year ago they sent us to collection for the balance of the contract. I have asked and asked for them to send me the original contract and just now they have done so. They have dogged us for $500+. I would definitely not sign a contract with them, recommend them nor would I ever use them again. read more

AVOID AVOID AVOID! AEC Alarms has a neat little aspect of their contract where their services are automatically renewed annually, and if you miss the 30 day window to cancel, you then have to pay for the full cost of one year, regardless of when you cancel. In other words, if your contract renews on 2/15, if you don't cancel between 1/15 and 2/15, you owe them the cost of another full year's service... even if you call one week late. (By the way, they don't send you any sort of reminder that your policy is renewing, so unless you mark you calendar, you're screwed out of another year's costs.) Crumby customer service, bad attitudes in the office and zero willingness to cut you any slack if you don't meet that 30 day window term of the contract. BEWARE!!! read more

With over 25 years of dealing with AEC Alarms, I have yet to encounter something deserving of anything less than 5 stars. But this review is solely for my most recent experience with them. As I needed to upgrade my system, I contacted them to get a quote on my needs. The Sales Agent, Roger, was very responsive and was able to get me a proposal the next day and followed up by phone to make sure I had a chance to review it. Not pushy, very informative, and certainly very professional. After I reviewed the proposal, I asked a few questions and then signed off an made a deposit as per the sales contract. Within an hour of completing that process, Christina from their Service department contacted me to set up the service call. She actually had an opening the next day but I was busy so we pushed it out a few days. She set the time for a morning 4-hour window and then after looking up my address estimated the technician would likely arrive between 8:30 -9:00 after calling me to confirm that morning. So I scheduled my morning around this. When the morning came, my own schedule was a mess but I managed to get everything done outside the home by 8:30 and so I called the office to confirm my appointment. The office checked and said indeed that the tech was on his way and would arrive before 9:00 am. I hung up, walked to my car to drive home and then my phone rang again... Rodrigo, the tech had arrived! Yikes, 8:39am... I was late! But they were perfectly on time. Luckily I was 5 mins away and so it all worked out. Upon my return, the technician and I handled the paperwork needed, and he started teh upgrade. Wore shoe covers inside the home, checked out the system finding only a 6 year old backup Battery in need of replacement (which we promptly replaced), and finished the upgrade within an hour. He explained to me how to properly utilize the web and mobile app system controls and I happily paid the balance and the system was all set to go. In summary, I worked with contacts from 3 different departments by email & phone and one direct contact with a very professional technician, and the communications was very smooth. It was a perfect experience coming from their side, and not any different than all of my previous contacts and service calls since the late 1980's when Mr Au himself was still designing and building their own systems. I assume if I were to need to cancel the services at some point, that they would follow the contracts that I'd need to go read and review as to what the terms of cancellation would be. Given this I can understand the frustration those other reviewers may have faced in needing to cancel their security service and I took that into consideration before I opted to upgrade again with AEC rather than change over to some other service, many whom offered me FREE systems and such just to switch... but AEC surveillance has helped our family a few times in the last couple decades and that performance counts a lot in my book. read more

Update: after posting this opinion I received a call from their management within 20 minutes and they personally showed up to fix the issue. I have to say this goes a long ways in improving their customer service IMO and it is good to see they took action so quickly. I'm hopeful the changes they have made will improve the reliability and if so, I will change the rating to 4 or 5 stars. When we purchased our home, AEC had already done the installation so we have gone ahead with their service. We've had the alarm go off 2 times in the middle of the night (between 3am - 5am), and both times it turned out to be a false alarm. After having them come out and service the alarm, we paid a substantial amount to have them fix their own installation problems. Now less than 4 days after this paid visit we are having more problems with the alarm and they are telling us they need to send another technician out to understand the problem and we may or may not be charged for this as well. Turning their service department into a profit center when it is their product and installation team does not instill confidence and is poor customer service IMO. I have not shopped around for alarm companies but I have to believe there are better options based upon our experience. I give them two stars based upon the fact: -They have an unreliable product, which for an alarm company is not good -They seem committed to making their service department a profit center based up on the poor workmanship they do themselves. read more

I have had AEC alarm system over 32 years now (and two homes) The system is hard wired and works quite well. AEC has replaced the sensors periodically, under maintenance contract, when they wear out. Recently I had a couple major annoying system alarms when I was home. It was diagnosed to the damaged wire in the crawl space and got it fixed today for a reasonable fee. Although my current system is old (original installation in 1987) it works fine for the basic requirements and the monitoring system has been reliable. Fortunately, no break-ins just tripping the alarm by mistake or occasional false alarm and I got contacted immediately. So in summary, I am a satisfied home owner. read more

We had AEC for our small business and had a 2 year contract. When we tried to cancel the service after 4 years they said that we could only cancel on our renewal date. They automatically extend the contract for one full year on the anniversary date of your initial contract. If I wanted to cancel mid year they would discontinue service immediately, but I'd still owe for the balance of the year. Otherwise I had to cancel on my anniversary date, which I did. They then said it's 60 days notice to cancel. Unfortunately this is a fairly standard practice for sub-par businesses. All in all a pain in the rear. read more

This company like to rip off their customers. My family used it for years for simple security system and when I upgraded the system to wireless by paying $4,600 (yes, I know, this is what I mean by rip off...), the system never function 100%. One or sometimes two of the wireless cameras didn't work (out of four). They sent out tecnicians again and again tried to fix it but couldn't. I finally took the opportunity to change these cameras to hardwire when my house was under remodeling, they still don't work fully. That is after I paid another $1,600! They sent two people out to do the job so they could charge double and one of them is a trainee! Can you believe that? After I told the tecnician that I want to talk to someone in charge (no one from the mangement willing to speak to me), they finally backed off and "only" charged me the labor of one techician. Does it occur to them that while the techician training the trainee, they actually slow down the job and charge me for more laber? This company sucks and you will regret if you use it. read more

I was pleasantly surprised to know that he really did value his customer base enough to contact me and help get any issues resolved. I think this willingness to address customer's concern is great. Watch out for the contract terms! You may get stuck like me. When I try to end their service, they refer to my contract which stated that I have to notify them 60 days before the contract end. They would not let me get off until the automatic renewal next contract term ends. read more

Stay AWAY from this company!!! I used AEC in my home in Los Altos because it was installed with the home when we bought it. I lived in the home for 7 years. Over the course of that time the alarm worked but we never used it. We still had maintenance issues, it would beep and annoy the hell out of you. I even unplugged it but my wife keep paying the bill for the discount on homeowners insurance. The final straw was when I tried to cancel it when we sold our home. They make it SOO difficult to cancel. You have to download a form off their website, etc.. They fumbled the paperwork, saying they never got it etc.. Bad customer service, Bad communication, Bad attitudes all around. I finally though I was free from this awful company called AEC. 3 months later, I get a bill for a month of service. I callled AEC and they said it was 60 days notice to cancel the service which I tried canceling more than 60 days ago but they fumbled the paperwork. I was also told it was 30 days notice to cancel initially BTW. Why do I need to give any notice for a non essential service as bad as this?? AEC Alarms has many many customers that are completely satisfied with there service, but unfortunately the only people that always write reviews are the ones that are unhappy.
