Petting cats from kennel to kennel. Which spreads illness!! I was not surprised by this behavior as I saw a man doing it, and he informed me that he was a volunteer and he knows what to do. I did not see him wash his hands after the encounter, and then other people saw him doing it and they started petting cats. Not a good example!!! Why aren't the volunteers going around helping spread information and helping. The staff is horrible. No one has incentive doesn't seem to care. The older male volunteer got confrontational and agitated. Maybe because he knew he was breaking the rules under the guise of being a volunteer. Showing poor behavior to other visitors.smh It was so unprofessional, but it's Pima county run. Seems like they need less volunteers clogging up the space and more people doing things. There is no reason it has to be so disorganized. We've been to the cat kennel multiple times over the years and it's always the same. A group of "volunteers" and employees congregated doing nothing. SMH We never decide to adopt there as it's so disorganized and unprofessional. Maybe one or two of the people work there (in blue?) but they are worthless. THE WORST SHELTER I HAVE EVER BEEN TOO. It's the people not necessarily the conditions (for cats) Follow up- went to the southern Tucson, Humane Society and it was a much better experience. Professional and organized. We ran into another woman who had just left Pima as well and said the same thing as I did above.

The one was adopted and I would have been happy to adopt the remaining one who was alone in his cage at PetSmart the whole time by the way. They called Friday night and left a message. I called back first thing Saturday, again on Sunday and on Monday and got their vm. They called and missed me at 1pm on Monday and did not leave a message. I called back and got them later that day, I think it was Renee because she runs the show, and was told that I could not adopt the single kitten alone, he would have to be adopted with the female next door to him who I had witnessed be mean to him, hissing and growling, that Friday night when I met them all. She insists that he must be adopted with another kitten. WTH?? Then she tells me about triplets coming in - black, grey and white. I say Great, I Love Grey cats too, I'll take the grey one and the little black one. Oh no, she says, the grey one is too much older than the black one. RIDICULOUS. Does she not understand that humans and animals connect just like people do? I have connected with this little guy. She also tells me the little black one I want is going to a home with one or more kittens (not clear on that) and that if I hadn't gotten back to her, she would've just moved onto the next family in line. Wow. He was a shy, timid baby who loved to be held. I tried to reason with her that I don't think he needs to be around other kittens. I went to say goodbye to him after the phone call, to tell him I loved him and bless him and wish him a good life. He was shy around the others, obviously loved people, and was playing by himself in his cage. She acted like a military drill sergeant and a know-it-all. Me and my friends have had cats and kittens all our lives (we're 60 years old). We know what we are talking about. I think she said she was an "animal behaviorist" like she knows it all. I am heartbroken and only hope and pray the little guy I fell in love with will end up in a good home and have a good life. I know for a fact I would've given him the BEST LIFE. I don't want the animals to not get adopted because of this person, but I do want to warn you what you'll be dealing with. I will also say that I do respect and appreciate all the work they do with TNR, but I think they need to revamp their adoption process. Trying to force a person to adopt two kittens, that they haven't even met!!?? And not allow them to have the one they fell in love with!? That's messed up.

I even (unintentionally) made my husband miss out on an activity that he had wanted to do, just to make sure we made it here for our tour. Tours are by appointment only and I was a bit worried because I had only just heard about this place the day before and was hoping to make an appointment on short notice. Unfortunately when I called I didn't get an answer so I left a message. I was so anxious that I followed up with an email and later that evening I received a kind response and was able to schedule our visit. We ended up getting a hotel and staying an extra night in the area so we could visit and it absolutely worth it!. This was one of the most memorable experiences of our trip. Getting to the sanctuary was a little confusing, it's kind of out in the middle of nowhere, but I trusted our map and we made it right on time. We let ourselves in the gate and by the time we pulled up there was someone coming out to welcome us. All the people here were kind and genuine and it is clearly a labor of love run by people who deeply care about what they do. Getting to meet the donkeys and learn their stories was incredibly moving. They all had unique circumstances and different personalities. Waylon was my absolute favorite. He was warm and vocal and full of character but all of the animals here just melted my heart. I laughed, and I cried on this tour. My only possible criticism about the entire experience was that it was just too short and I wish it could have lasted longer. The tour itself is free but by the end, we found ourselves stuffing all of the cash that we had on us into their donation jar. The other couple that was on the tour with us was discussing sponsoring a donkey for a year as we were leaving... I hope they did. This is the kind of place that makes you want to help in any way possible. If you're anywhere near Benson and have a soft spot for animals, you should make the effort to visit and donate if you can. Incredible places like these can only exist if people care enough to support them and this one truly deserves your support.

The tour is free and you get to learn about donkeys, feed and pet donkeys, learn what the sanctuary does, and also about each donkey ( and mule) that are residing there. The couple that started and work the sanctuary and the staff who worked there truly care for animals and it shows by their knowledge of each animal and the work they put in. My only recommendation- just because it's a free tour - don't be a jerk- donate to the cause. And even if you don't care about the cause... someone takes the time to give you a tour. Be nice. Do right.

I called and left a message explaining that she was a particular kind of kitty and best suited in a home where she was the only pet. A man called me back, he didn't even bother to ask me any questions. he was clearly exasperated, in fact, he sounded almost insulted that I had even bothered to call them for help in the first place. He told me that they can't take a cat who can't be around other cats. Well, she's dead now. She got sick, so I could not, in good conscience, get rid of her, or send her to a shelter. So, I worked with her, until she could go no further. Hyperthyroidism was the disease and she did not respond well to the medication. In the end, we had to make the agonizing end of life decision for her and we let her go. Of course, she would have gotten sick, regardless of whether the shelter stepped up to help, or not, but I am still posting this because it is abundantly clear that they do not want to have to go above and beyond for the cats. They just want it to make pretend that they do.

I have to say that I'm puzzled by the review that described PAWSitively CATS as "depressing" with a…read morelack of space for cats and visitors. As someone who has volunteered there for over 15 years, I can attest that there are 3 separate large areas for different populations of cats (adoptable/sanctuary cats, Feline Leukemia cats, Special Needs/less than social cats) and each area typically houses between 20 and 30 felines. There are multiple rooms with screened in porches for the cats to enjoy, benches for visitors to sit on, and the only time I've seen the cats "swarm" is at the end of the day when cleaning is finished and they're expecting their treats. The post in question also claims that there is an online schedule of hours indicating that the shelter is only open to the public one day a week for 2 hours. I haven't been able to find that; instead hours are listed on Facebook as shown in the image I'm including. PAWSitively CATS is run by just a few staff members (some part time) and a few dozen dedicated volunteers. The cats are well cared for and happy.

If there was one word to describe this shelter, it would be: Depressing…read more My visit to Pawsitively Cats genuinely was an experience I never want to feel again. I am someone who ADORES cats, the type of person that will take in a stray and rearrange my whole life to care for them until their last breath. My love is so great that it pains me to see these adoptable cats living in such an uninviting space. This shelter is open to the public one day a week for TWO HOURS. I thought it was an error when I saw that schedule online, but it's true. Upon entering, the building is flooded with adoptees, and for a cat lover you'd think that'd be a dream, but instead of excitement I felt a wave of anxiety. This shelter has dim lighting that doesn't allow you to see the cats clearly, and there's no space to really connect with any of them. There didn't seem like any sort of organization to pinpoint which cat was which, and since a lot of cats do look alike, you could only hope the one you bonded with is the same one you're adopting. As I tip-toed around the cats to look at the ones in cages (for medical or behavioral purposes), I could just sense the discomfort in their eyes. Safety measures seemed nonexistent in this place; anyone could easily step on a cat's paw or trip with how many swarm around you. The worst part was when I had a tour of a backroom where countless cats were fighting for a spot to feel the fresh air from a screen window. It was like looking at a can of sardines; I can't imagine any cat could present their best selves under these circumstances. Not only is there an extremely limited window to visit this shelter, but when you do, it makes you feel unhappy being there. You'll feel just as cramped and exposed as these poor babies. This situation could be the incentive for more people to adopt here, but I don't think that's fair on either side. The cats don't have any room to get to know their future owner, nor will they behave calmly when they're fighting for the spotlight. As for visitors, they'll feel more inclined to rescue the cats out of pity more than genuine connection. I wouldn't recommend anyone coming here, but then again, I almost wish you do come to decrease the population inside the shelter. I advise those who run Pawsitively Cats to work on expanding their business; a huge reconstruction of the place so there's more room for cats to live comfortably side-by-side. I am aware that there may be financial concerns involving this, so in that case, I'd suggest relocating these cats somewhere that can better cater to their needs. I'd rather that than have those innocent fur babies trapped in a dark and bleak shelter any longer. I understand that this shelter was built out of love for animals, I truly do, but for the sake of their wellbeing, Pawsitively Cats must improve. If not, people will not be inclined to help out, and the cats will be in no state to become someone's lifelong friend.

So I saw a dog on the animal league of green valley website and called to communicate about it. They were very nice on the phone and their recommendation was to come during their open hours. Which I did. Gregory was the volunteer that worked with me to meet lots of dogs. He was nice and professional. They treat the dogs well and it looks good from that perspective. Yes they ask a lot of questions but I don't see that as a problem. They want the dogs to go to proper owners, when a dog goes to a good home they are less likely to return. Wow they don't want the dog to be off leash... cause we have coyotes that will eat that dog. Hello. And I train my dogs very well and never let them off leash.
