The place is clean and the check in was fast. The nurse who brought me in seemed like she knew what she was doing and asked the right kind of questions to understand what's going on. The doctor was focused, looked over my history and gave practical advice based on what I told them. They weren't overly chatty but professional and made sure I understood what to expect moving forward. I have been working with Dr. Ching for about 4 years pretty consistently and can't thank him and the advance physical therapy crew enough for keeping me going. He is truly the best physical therapist around in the bay and might actually be the best in my opinion on the west coast. He has helped get rid of my migraines COMPLETELY and significantly reduced the affects of a rare visual issue that once ruined me on a day to day basis and prevented me from exceeding at work. In 2016, I had developed terrible plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis from too much exercise. I started on a weekly program with Deanne that strengthened not only my feet but my calves, legs, back, and abs. I could barely walk when I started seeing her. I was limping wherever I went. I have chronic back and neck pain. I've been to numerous physical therapy places that ran the gambit from horrific to (what I thought was) great. Until I came here, though, I didn't know what great was. Dr. Alton Ching has the experience and empathy to know how to work through chronic issues, to help bring relief. I've had issues for over 20 years; he's the first therapist I've seen that understands that if you've got 20 years of problems, it's not going to be resolved in 15 visits. He takes his time during appointments, to make sure he's worked out what needs to be done. Sometimes that means my appointment takes longer than usual, and sometimes it means that my appointment starts a little late because he took extra time with a previous patient. Dr. Ching takes the time to work with you; not just treat you like you came out of a cookie cutter. That type of specialized work takes time. The rest of the staff is wonderful as well. The front desk has always been helpful for me when I've been scheduling, rescheduling, or paying bills. The therapy assistants are friendly and know what they're doing. I was diagnosed TMJ 4 months ago and spent a horrific summer trying to get some relief from jaw pain. Went to countless doctors, TMJ specialists, Chiropractors and Dentists and even had a tooth extracted. The last TMJ doctor I went to referred me to Advance Physical Therapy and I am pleased to say that with the assistance of Deanne, Michelle and especially Dr. Ching, I am now beginning to get some relief. They have been teaching me alot about different muscle groups and how the neck can directly relate to my jaw issues. Last September 2014, I underwent surgery to repair a massive rotator cuff tear and biceps tendon tear. It was extremely frustrating to suffer a severe injury of this nature again. Being an active person, I was uncertain of where this what this would mean for me going forward. Would I be able to get back my shoulder and arm back to where it once was? Would I have to give all sports up? Enter Dr. Alton Ching. After months of physical therapy, Dr. Ching helped me get back to my active lifestyle. Throughout the course of PT, he took special care in treating the tissue surrounding my shoulder to get the motions and movements back to where it needed to be. In addition, a customized exercise plan was developed to focus on getting back the range of motion and strength. I think Advance Physical therapy is the go-to Therapy clinic in the Silicon Valley. I believe Dr. Cheng, the owner, is exceptionally talented, skilled, sensitive, caring and just cool ! Plus he is on the cutting edge in terms of neuroplasticy and general medical knowledge. I have heard great things about his staff (from some of my patients) and even though it is a bit of a drive from Los Gatos it is not bad in non rush hour. For sure it is worth it!! Before seeing Dr.Ching, I had been suffering from chronic back pain for the past 10 years. My quality of life was greatly reduced -- I could no longer play contact sports, running would injure my back, and I couldn't even bend forward without experiencing significant pain -- and I'm only in my late twenties! I've seen multiple physical therapists and chiropractors and things have been more or less the same. I thought that's just how I'm going to live for the rest of my life -- in pain and limited motion, and I'm just waiting for the eventual surgery or ... I tried not to even think about it. Dr.Ching and his staff gave me hope because I've improved significantly since I started seeing him a couple months ago. Dr.Ching is very kind and knowledgeable, and he knows so much about how the body works -- his analysis about my back pain is on point and the treatment plan thus far has been extremely effective. The staff here is friendly and make you feel comfortable. I had horrible TMJ pain on top of neck and shoulder tightness and pain. I looked for a very long for a Dr that specialized in TMJ who was not a dentist. I don't grind my teeth so a mouth guard wouldn't work for me. I've also gotten TENs treatment and do exercises there with someone that can help me make sure I am doing them right. Deanne is probably the most thoughtful and knowledgeable Physical Therapist i've ever worked with. Her insight enabled us to concentrate on what turned out to be carpal tunnel syndrome rather than a problem with nerves running down to my hand via my neck -- but she's working on both just to make sure no stone is left unturned. She's laid back - but quite intentional to get her patients back on track again. Also knows much about pilates and other forms of exercise. I've learned so much from her. I came to the Sunnyvale location of this establishment this past summer for knee pain. My family doctor recommended it. I have never gone to have physical therapy before and had my doubts. I was welcomed by a very nice staff member and filled out some forms about my symptoms then met with Deanne for my appointment. She was/is fantastic! Very warm and personable and examined me thoroughly and was able to diagnose the source of the problem. She also prepared exercises for me to do on my own to fix the issue and it ended up going great! I still do the exercises to keep the pain from reoccurring. I was/am so happy and so impressed with this level of care. That was with one visit. She also gave me her email address to reach out with any questions. It was going above and beyond. I recently started having a new odd problem with heel pain with my other leg and called in to make an appointment with Deanne but the receptionist said she was booked out for weeks. I wrote to her about it. To no surprise, she already had an idea of what the problem most likely was and found some time to squeeze me in earlier. Unfortunately, it was still a tad far out and I was going out of town so she recommended I go see Dr. Matalon at their Redwood City location. I took the appointment and met Dr. Matalon and she was fantastic as well! She thoroughly examined me and diagnosed the problem and set up a treatment plan of action with exercises and stretches to do on my own and also gave me her email address if I had further questions. This was yesterday and I am already feeling better and will stick with the treatment plan and feel confident that with this treatment plan, these symptoms will subside in the next few weeks. I should mention nothing is instant and I still had/have to put in the work of doing the stretches and exercises but knowing what the problem is and having a plan of action to remedy it is priceless to me. I would highly recommend this place (either location) for anyone living with pain. read more

Very highly recommended. Dr. Ching and his team are substantially above the rest. I have seen three other physical therapists in the past, and Advance Physical Therapy comfortably stands out compared to the others. I have a very acute tendonitis in my right wrist (from heavy keyboard and mouse usage at work) and I was initially unable to do most normal functions with that hand because of the stiffness and pain. After several visits and some stretching and strengthening (done at home) I've regained the use of the wrist, which enables me to do my job properly! The people at Advance Physical Therapy are total professionals and the quality of care is superb. If you have an injury or other recovery treated by them, you are in very good hands. read more

I'm sure Dr. Ching is very smart and capable.. unfortunately this business is small and whoever they have in charge of the phone and scheduling is horrible. After my first call, I was told I would be called back to confirm if they take my insurance, and no one ever called back. I ended up going to the first appointment anyway and paid out of pocket. The studio in Sunnyvale was very small, and Dr. Ching handed me off to a young assistant after doing a brief evaluation. The assistant didn't seem capable of evaluating my response to the stretches he recommended, and so I left disappointed. I called back for a follow up because my back began to get worse and I didn't want to start over with another therapist yet, and the person on the phone didn't seem to know which doctor was available when. She again said she would call me back and never did. I tried to call a third time and asked to see the doctor asap. I was given a time for an appointment, and then asked which doctor I wanted to see.. when I said the same one, I was put on hold and eventually told that the doctor I originally saw wouldn't be available for weeks. This review is purely for the registration and appointment process- called to set up an appointment for my daughter who had a prescription for 3x a week for 3 months. I specifically asked if they can accomodate that starting the next week- 3x that week and subsequent weeks. Was put on hold while she checked, came back and said yes the therapist can do that- we went through the information gathering process, insurance details provided and then time to book appointments for next week, and....they only have 1 appointment they can give me for next week! REALLY? after wasting my time and after I specified when I first started the conversation that I want 3x a week, and was even ok w/a different therapist as long as she could be seen 3x a week. Called Diaz-Olsen who could accomodate and was efficient in the registration process..go there. read more

After 8 months of lingering lower back problems , I was referred to Advance Physical therapy. Dr Ching, Deanne, Corey, Shannon and everyone else on staff is patient, tender and a pleasure to work with while physically recovering. Before, I couldn't play the sports I was used to at a level I was used to. Now I'm exerting myself more than I thought I was possible in the short period I've been recovering. I saw Deanne for a lower back problem and was really happy with her professionalism and approach. Deanne did a thorough assessment of the injury and got to work on it straight-away, immediately making an improvement. Within a few visits I was 100% better. I've seen four different physios (2 in the US and 2 in Australia), and these guys were just as good as my favourites in Australia. They avoided the common (in my opinion, bad) practices of treating multiple patients at the same time, and using electrical stimulation machines (which I don't believe do anything). I have also been to physios that treat all back injuries the same, which is a mistake, hence why I valued the thorough assessment Deanne made to diagnose and treat the problem properly. read more

Dr. Ching is an excellent therapist! I've had great results and I'am able to resume my activities. His hands move as though they have x-ray eyes manipulating the muscles, tendons and whatever else is in there. I never need to tell him where it hurts. He gently probes and locates problem areas quickly and always knows exactly what to do to alleviate any pain and to restore my mobility. I may walk into the office limping, but after he works on me I walk out with ease. I especially like the fact that he give you exercises that you can easily do at home to prevent the problem from returning and hints on how to manage at home with the limitations you have. He always makes sure you are doing the exercises correctly. The office has a comfortable atmosphere. It's professional, but not stuffy. Both he and his assistant are very personable with smiles and occasional chuckles. I never wait more than 2-3 minutes for my appointment. They take care of any paperwork with accuracy and ease. I had been suffering with my lower back (spinal stenosis) for a year or two working with an HMO therapist who said it was my knee. Finally, in 2010 after my first visit with Dr. Ching, I was told to go back to my doctor and let him know that he discovered it was not my knee, but my back. I proceeded with an injection and completed physical therapy with Dr. Ching. At the end of my two month therapy I was able to hike up to 11,400 feet in the Sierras. Wow, Super improvement from not being able to walk short distances or sit in a restaurant for a meal. Now three years later, I am back with Dr. Ching taking care of another type of back problem, the vertebra. Again, I am so pleased at the manner in which the therapy is progressing and still learning new exercises that will help me in recovery and prevent future problems. read more

Dr. Alton Ching is the best PT in this area! His help has been critical in my neck pain recovery. Having a doctorate degree and wealth of knowledge and experience in musculo-skeletal problems, very friendly and encouraging attitude always, his genuine care for you, all make him the best! I have seen several other PTs and have had bad experiences previously (see my BreakThrough PT review). Dr Ching was very precise in my diagnosis even before any test results and handled the situation with immense care. I have a herniated disc in my neck. His techniques are much different than other PTs and much better and effective. Every time the neck massage/stretches he gave feels like heaven when I was in pain which clearly demonstrated his amazing feel for things. He has a good set of equipment in his office that can handle a variety of different exercises. He always customizes the exercises specifically for you on a given day depending on your condition. He has helped me to get more stronger. I would also like to thank Jennifer, Nancy and Sarah to always encourage me through the exercises and make sure that I am doing them in perfect form! Dr. Ching has also given us several doctor recommendations which were all excellent. I would totally recommend all my friends here in case they have any injury to fix. read more

Dr Ching seriously rocks. I had to have physical therapy to prepare for Major Corrective Jaw Surgery, and had therapy with him in October 09 for about 1.5 months, then again in May 10 for a few weeks (as I was heading in for surgery in August). This wont be my only review as I am yet to go back to him for my 'proper' therapy, which is post -surgical therapy. The PT i had with him so far has been to 'calm things down' enough for me to even have the surgery, and he sure did that. I was, and still am, deaiing with a complicated case with my jaw. It had grown again suddenly on the right side at age 23, and took 2 years to burn out. This was thought to be due to stopping the pill after being on since it was 10. (yes, 10, my doctor at the time did not have a clue and thought this was best for me). Obviously, my bones didn't grow properly as i was about to discover in 06 when my problems started with my jaw. Its hard to put the whole story down here, because its VERY lengthy. But, basically, this is the order it went in. First problem : bone started to grow on right side - mild, but rapid. This pushed everything over to my left and caused extreme pressure on the entire left TMJ. Second problem : This cause me to have a severe lock of the left jaw joint at one point, early 06. Third problem: My bite started to shift to the left and just go completely messed up and very assymetric. As did my jaw. 4th problem: Due to the pressure from the right, and the messed up bite now occuring, I ended up in pain in my entire left side and ended up with a displaced disc that was stuck so far forward it wouldn't go back on its own. This caused a TON of pain. And alot of it was nerve pain. OUCH. Sharp, burning, you name it 5th problem: Pain then caused muscle and jaw spasms on the left and clicking in the right. 6th problem: The pain then caused more bite problems as I was avoiding my left to get away from it. Vicious cycle. I spent over 2 years with a pain management doc, (Dr Moncada, AWESOME) trying to get me ready to just have braces put on. I needed Jaw surgery to correct my bite. Braces weren't going to cut it. But, I was in this cycle of pain. So I needed the pain doc, (who is an orofacial pain specialist, I lucked out big time) the necessary drugs, and PT to get my to surgery. I was in SUCH pain I thought surgery would not be possible for a long time at least. I went to 1 PT for a few months and it didnt help at all. it was one of those types of PT's where you go and go and go, but are still not quite sure what they actually 'did'. you know?? and you don't get any better. They massage here and there, but never quite do 'anything'. Dr Ching was way different. Lets just say, that even though this is a progressive review, and I will be posting another one once I am cleared to start my rehab from jaw surgery which was 7 weeks ago, that, my jaw calmed down tons, as did my neck. He understood he had to treat both, not just the one tiny area, like the other PT's did. He knows the TMJ extremely well. and its so hard to find a good TMJ PT. the spasms stopped. he could touch my left joint on the outside without it hurting. I could drive a long distance without my neck spazing up. and my neck was spazing up BECAUSE I had such an unstable jaw and bite. So... a man who can acheive all this even though I needed compulsory surgery to fix the actual problem, I think thats huge. I mean, to help someone who hasnt even had the surgery yet, who had a jaw and bite as messed up as mine... I can only look forward to the day I can start PT with him now that my jaw and bite has been fixed. I anticipate great results to get me out of this 4 year pain cycle my bite has put me in. Go to him, you wont regret it. and hes easy to talk too as well. By the way, and granted, yes I wasnt chewing cos that worsened my pain, it took 8 months of not seeing him for the pain to get bad again. and I think thats awesome. read more

This review pertains to several years ago, ca. 2014, but I suspect they're still just as great. I tried a number of different physical therapists and the first several I tried were bad. What they did wrong was (a) the actual physical therapist spent almost no time with the patients and, (b) they'd just give me canned exercises to do based on my referral rather than on actually examining me. The result was that my symptoms were not helped. Deanne Smith at Advance was totally different than this in every way. She'd actually spend 30 minutes or so each time examining me, asking me how things had been in the past week, testing my muscles, etc. Then, she'd custom tailor my exercises, making slight modifications every single time to make sure that I was strengthening just the right parts of the right muscles and tendons in the right ways. Not only that, but she listens! Other physical therapists didn't really listen to me. The other ones I saw had huge egos and seemed to think they were gods who could cure me without listening to me. They weren't! Deanne doesn't have a huge ego, she's just really good and part of what makes her so good is that she listens. The result was that the muscular problems I was seeing her for actually went away. This is how it should be, but I found that it was hard to find. If you're frustrated with bad physical therapists and Advance is in your area, I highly recommend them. I don't know about their other PT's, because I only saw Deanne, but Deanne is great for sure. read more

I was suffering with severe TMJ pain, after weeks of intense pain, many trips to Urgent Care and a trip to the ER, I was desperate for answers and also pain relief. No amount of pain killers would release the muscle spasms that I was getting not only in the jaw join but along my jaw line, in my ears, sinus, neck and front of my head. I then desperately started searching online for other forms of treatment and found Dr Ching and Advance Physical Therapy in Redwood City. Upon walking into my very first session with Dr Ching, I could not comfortably put my back teeth together, after the first treatment not only did I have pain relief but my teeth were aligned. I recall saying to Dr Ching that for the first time in years I remembered what it felt like to have no tension in my jaw or face. I still see Dr Ching weekly for maintenance but I am happy to say that I have not had a single spasm in my jaw, teeth or face in 4 months. I cannot rate Dr Ching or his staff highly enough. I injured my thumb while moving my computer around at work. After months of trying to fix it myself and having it only get worse, I took some advice from my doctor, and started looking for a physical therpaist. I chose Advance Physical Therapy based on reviews here, and was not disappointed. In a few short weeks of seeing Dr. Ching, the mobility in my thumb has vastly improved, and it is nearly pain free. I really wanted to write this review only because it is easy to feel that the reviews are fake since they are all five stars. But it is actually very true that this place is worthy of more stars. I started seeing Deanne for multiple problem areas a couple of weeks back and let me tell you I am really glad i went here. Deanne is very thorough and yes, she is a magician when it comes to treating painful areas, she does some massage kind of manipulation whenever i feel sore and the soreness is gone!!! she also teaches me some exercises to correct my muscular imbalance issues and she makes sure I do it in the correct form. I have been to many places before and never have i felt good so soon. her assistant Michelle is also very good. She makes me do a real workout!!!:):) The only problem is that this place is out of network with my insurance so i wont be able to go for a long time, my problems really warrant a long term treatment. I am really hoping for a magic by way of which my they will become in network with my insurance:), but i dont think that can happen!:( read more

I saw 3 therapists before I met Alton. I was starting to give up on physical therapy altogether. When I met Alton, I saw his techniques were different, but still not sure if I wanted to continue. After just 2 visits, I noticed my neck pain was starting to go away little by little. I noticed how much better I felt on my own, and I finally started the path to recovery. It was like magic. Alton gets to the core of your problem. He has a natural instinct for that. The excercise equipment was different from the other places, and it strengthened me very smoothly. It was also helpful to be with a therapist who is intelligent , caring, and so mentally positive about my recovery. I am very happy I met Alton. He has helped me tremendously. The home exercise program is also more likeable than the previous programs I have been introduced to by others. I will back, since my injury was very severe (whiplash/disk injury), but I am relieved that I am not walking around anymore with migraines and shifty neck joints. When I came to see Deanne a few years ago, I was physically and mentally in very bad shape. I had all kinds of muscle tension and muscle weakness from years of working on a computer and years of built-up stress. I couldn't sit at a computer for more than 15 min without it causing me neck and shoulder discomfort for the rest of the day or even longer. I wasn't sleeping well, and was taking sleep medicine. On top of that, I was having a lot of anxiety when I would travel or even venture places not that far from home. It was seriously effecting my day-to-day life. I was thrilled when I met Deanne and she listened to ALL my symptoms. She wasn't really interested in simply loosening the tight neck muscles, my original reason to seeing her, although she would do that if that is all I wanted. But like me, she was interested in getting to the heart of the issues: the complex interrelationship between all of my physical AND mental symptoms. She compared it to peeling an onion: work on one tight area, and there might be another issue hidden under that. Keep doing that and eventually you resolve the issues for good. (As opposed to fixing or only minimizing discomfort from 1 issue and then either the root issue remains, or that 1 issue returns because she wasn't given the time to resolve it for good) She also confirmed what other doctors had denied: that my physical and mental symptoms were related. She gave me very personalized treatment and a muscle strengthening program that I could do right there in the office, working on those muscles that were weak from the years of abuse (poor posture, stress). She also gave me countless stretches and tips on loosen the muscles when they get tight, or better still, how to keep them from GETTING tight. I still have discomfort from time to time because my computer and stress are both still around. But I don't have MUCH discomfort anymore. And when I do, I use her stretches and tips to get some relief very quickly. My anxiety is the lowest its been in years, and I am not taking any sleep medicine. And with all the strengthening exercises, I now have tone and strength that I've never had in my upper body. So, obviously, I highly recommend Deanne and Advance Physical Therapy!
