My wife locked the keys in our car while we were at our son's baseball game on the outskirts of Modesto. I requested roadside assistance and was given an estimated arrival time of 60 minutes. As the timer ran down, I went out to the parking lot so I wouldn't miss the driver. The timer reached zero, and about 15 minutes later, no one had arrived or given us an update. I called AAA. The representative I spoke with was rude, put me on hold to check the arrival time, and then told me it would be at least another hour. I was frustrated, and the call was transferred to a supervisor. The supervisor told me that because of my frustration and the inaccurate arrival estimate, they were canceling my roadside assistance and blocking me from requesting it again for the rest of the night. I tried to submit another request, but it was canceled repeatedly--about six times. That left my family stranded with no help from the service I'd paid for. I've rarely needed AAA: my last call was for a jump-start more than three years ago, with another long stretch of no use before that. After more than a decade as a member, I couldn't believe they handled a lockout this way. I spent this morning on the phone with AAA and received a full refund for the roadside assistance they failed to provide. I won't be renewing or recommending AAA. And thank you to the guy I found through Facebook who actually showed up and unlocked our car for $40.
