An older woman behind the deli counter became visibly irritated, saying she couldn't help because she'd have to unpack and slice the turkey. She passed my order to another employee. Shortly afterward, I noticed her whispering to a younger employee, and both laughed while looking in my direction. Another employee later made a po Yankees comment to me after noticing my Red Sox hat. While harmless on its own, it added to an already uncomfortable atmosphere. Despite no customers visibly ahead of me, I waited nearly 30 minutes for my deli sliced turkey wrap. I never complained to anyone working there. After receiving my food, I went outside to the seating area with my two companions. The same woman approached and confronted me, accusing me of speaking disrespectfully to her employees. I was stunned because I had done nothing of the sort! She then questioned where I was from and seemed surprised when I answered New Hampshire, just across the border. What does me ordering lunch have to do with my residency? I couldn't help wondering whether my appearance or ethnicity played a role. I cannot know her motivation, but I felt singled out and humiliated. Ironically, the café displayed a rainbow flag symbolizing inclusivity, yet my experience felt anything but welcoming. My companions witnessed the confrontation and were equally shocked. To make matters worse, my poorly assembled wrap fell open before I could eat it. Given how I was treated, I felt uncomfortable eating it and honestly worried after that interaction so decided to throw it away after wasting my money and left there hungry. I also noticed another review describing a similar negative interaction. However, I DO want to acknowledge that the gentleman who handled my payment was absolutely lovely, and I appreciated his kindness. I understand employees have difficult days, but asking reasonable menu questions should never result in apparent mockery or being confronted outside. It's especially disappointing to see this behavior modeled in front of younger staff. I genuinely hope the owners take this feedback seriously. Inclusivity should be reflected not just in signage but in how every customer is treated. Hoping this just is an isolated incident because my time in Vermont was awesome and everyone else was so nice.

The only other option is Sala Thai downtown, but they are a more expensive, sit-down option. The food at Taste of Thai is cooked fresh, when you order it. Unlike other Thai carts which cook the food ahead of time and just warm it up for you. They've expanded the menu to include quite a few different dishes, but the Pad Thai is still the go-to. You can select the heat level of spice for your dish on a scale of 1 to 10. I always go with 10.

So far, we've found the quality perfectly good, the place large and clean, and plenty of deep discounts (pork roast for $1.99/lb? Ten pounds of local potatoes for $2.99/bag?) of useful staples. They use the 'Best Yet' in-house label that Fosters in Greenfield uses, as well as sharing a couple other local vendors -- for instance, they have the same discount local brand of spices that Fosters and The Barn uses, however much labeled 'Food City' instead. The only fly in the ointment, so far, is that the bakery selection is meagre, and often not very good. As against that, they've got a pizza operation that's just plain outstanding, the best pizza I've had yet in the county, and often the cheapest: just the other day was twice now that I've gone in for a large (16") pizza and found it sale priced at $10 even. I wish I knew about these prices the last three years, because I would've done my grocery shopping here instead of in Greenfield.

I was visiting family in Keene, NH (So pretty! Get up there straight away!!) and it's their tradition to grab breakfast from this spot which they refer to as "Lisa's" cuz a woman named Lisa owns it. Let me lay it out you guys: Lisa and her deli team are breakfast sandwich wizards. Tbh, I'm fairly certain that I didn't know what a breakfast sandwich even meant before last weekend. Let's get to the magic. The sandwich is built on an un-toasted english muffin that is the ur-muffin of muffins: good structure but pliant and hearty but thinnish. These muffins taste like real food. Made of actual grains, by actual hands. Are they made in-house? By benevolent breakfast elves? Perhaps. The sausage patty is house-made, my aunt informed me, simply seasoned, and crazy delicious. I kid you not that I could eat many such patties, on their own, if that weren't unseemly and basically a health risk. Because yeah a sausage diet is not one that is recommended all too often, right? I suppose I should have inquired what sort of sausage it was but I think all you need to know is that it's a magic patty. The egg component of the sandwich is made in one of those nifty round-shaped thingies, so it lines up perfectly with the patty and muffin. Because not only is this sandwich delicious, it's also gorgeous and tidy: no dangly bits to worry about or crumbs as you bliss out in between bites, reading an actual paper newspaper in the garden or driving to that sweet kayak spot or lying in bed wondering if you ever really need to get up. (I tested these conditions for you. It's all good!) And of course, no breakfast sandwich can be replete without some sort of cheese. I believe the cheese is cooked into the egg? Mmmmm. Cheesy eggs. I think we've all experienced that moment, right? (Vegan friends, know that I am a huge fan of tofu veggie scrambles with Daiya and/or nutritional yeast; a plant-strong "cheesy eggs" FTW, for sure!) Finally there's a bit of green in the layering of this egg, patty and cheese beauty: thinly sliced cucumber, julienned green peppers, maybe a bit of arugula? Make no mistake it's FANCY and you totally deserve it. Of course, you can opt out of the greens, as my cousin did. She opted out of the sausage patty as well...so. You're on your own if you follow her dictum. Anyway what are you doing next weekend? Maybe you should mosey over to Beaver Street?
