If you want an experience with unfriendly unhappy female front store grocery clerks who don't smile, say hello and are angry and disgruntled with life as they take your hard earned money as if it's a chore- go to fosters! The front grocery checkers apparently never learned what it means to "serve with a smile" this has happened every time in this store - are these women mistreated why are they so cold and angry all the time? What!? I hasn't reviewed this place?? I've written them fan mail, for goddess sake, (serious) how could this happen? This is the best supermarket I've ever been in for over all experience. Do they have Everything? No. Close to it with all the right attitude -including 25 cent coffee, clean bathrooms, killer customer service and the best local produce this sideof a farm stand? Yes. Greenfield is known for their family owned companies, and Foster's is another Greenfield gem. This Supermarket has all the items that you would be looking for in a chain store, but they also have an incredible selection of local goods. Ever time that I walk into this store they have great deals on fruits and produce as well. They also have a great deli and an incredible staff. They always great me when I walk in, and have genuine conversations when checking out. If you are looking for chain supermarket quality items but don't want the headache of shopping in one, then Foster's is the place to go! My childhood is riddled with memories of Mr. (Bud) Foster's voice on the radio yelling about fresh fish. When fish was on the menu at our home, it always came from here. Now, as an adult making the decisions about where our family shops for groceries, I get to visit Foster's once a week. The people who work in the various departments are knowledgeable, friendly, and accessible. The meat guy, for example, once saw me making a sneer face at commercial beef. He asked me why, which started a whole conversation about grass fed local versus commercial, and how my husband did not share my ethics and I was buying the beef for him. He helped me choose burger for my husband and I headed off to complete my purchases. I was in line to check out when this same staff member brought me a pound of Foxbard ground beef - grass fed, and local - so I could have a burger too. The kids at the register are pleasant and communicative. Even the guys who BAG are social and fun to be around. I've heard people say that it's more expensive to shop at Foster's, but I haven't seen that reflected in my grocery bill. Maybe this is because I am a perimeter shopper - produce, fish, dairy - or maybe it's a wrong perception of locals. Regardless - It's the little things that build and make a community what it is. Foster's lives and breathes local community. As long as I am the one doing the shopping, they've got my dollar. read more

This store has ample parking for its size and the employees are polite, but I experienced severe sticker shock. Most items are double or almost double what they cost at Market Basket. There weren't any signs for sale items though I did find one item marked quick sale that was a good deal. I bought very little because it was so expensive. Despite the high prices there were quite a few empty spaces on the shelves, which made me wonder who is coming here and buying up the overpriced merchandise. The carts had also seen better days, so it's not like you go there for an upscale experience. Maybe it's folks who like the specialty items near the bakery which appear to be packaged onsite. It also is not near Route 2, but may be convenient to those living in the downtown area. read more

I shop at Fosters 3-4 times a week. Lets start at the Deli,, The prices are cheap compared to Big Y,, one example imported ham Big Y $8.00 Fosters $5.50 (about) Now I'm reading how RUDE the counter help are. First of all a want to say I don't no these ladies except to say Hi and Good-bye to, an in the 12 years that I have been shopping there I never seen ANY Deli help show any rudeness to anyone I'm not saying that they don't act rude and have a bad hair day,, we all do once in awhile. I finally went here this afternoon, and was super impressed. This is a small, but comprehensive supermarket with just about everything you might need. They have a great produce department, natural foods, a small deli and bakery, and even beer and wine! Their prices are very good too. I LOVE that I can buy my groceries from a locally-owned business. Between the farmers market, the co-op, and Foster's I'll never have to step in a Big Y again. Yay! read more

This is a nice small local store, but recently we noticed a charge of a 10 cent bottle/can deposit when it should be 5 cents( see photo showing this for a 12 pack). Someone is stealing from customers.We called to inquire about this and the woman who answered was very rude and told us the cashier did this. Another caveat is prices are a bit high. read more

I like Foster's -- it has an old time market feel to it, in the days before corporations felt that supermarkets needed to be the size of a football field. The produce prices are particularly good, and the bakery has a wide selection. (I recommend their many varied kinds of bread, which are quite reasonably priced.) The staff is very friendly, and they seem to have pretty good retention. I don't myself drink, but they've got a large beer and wine section, almost as large as a small packy, for those who do. (It's also got its own dedicated FRTA transit bus stop, which given that I don't have a car did not go unwelcomed.) That being said, the selection is relatively small, the prices are relatively high and there's no buyer's club such as the larger supermarkets have. It is what it is. read more

Love it here! My favorite grocery store in the area. Fosters has great deals on produce and knowledgeable staff. Their brownies are the best. For whatever reason the ladies at the deli counter are pretty rude but no matter, the food at the hot bar is the best. read more

I work mostly overnight shifts so I seldom get to go there because they are not open late and do not open early. However, I heard great things from many of the locals in Greenfield so when I had the chance a couple of weeks ago to stop in to pick a sandwich and a drink for lunch. I went to the deli area and did not see any. I asked one of the employees in the deli and received a rude response about they being the the case. I was looking for a freshly made sandwich not something which was made yesterday and has been sitting out since. If that was what I was looking for I would have gone to a gas station or Cumberland Farms. I started to walk out and ran into a young employee who I know from my work in community. She was able to get me what I was looking for. read more

Really don't go to fosters very often because they rarely have what I want. They start putting the deli food away hours before the store closes. Can only order large amounts of beans now and they always run out so can't get those anymore. Tried talking to a manager about some of my concerns to no avail. I'll write from the perspective of both a former employee & and customer. As a customer, they've got a wide selection for a locally-owned store. The produce department gets in a lot of unique and delicious fruits and veggies all the time. The meat department doesn't have local meat, but they've at least got free range products and the staff there are wonderful. Seafood is relatively decent at getting in a fair amount of fish. The other departments are pretty good, too, but I didn't spend a lot of time there. I do love the natural foods section for small snacks and Newman-O's. Let's not forget the cashiers! They work pretty hard even if they don't always enjoy it. As an employee, I didn't like being there. I was in the seafood department. I saw a lot of ridiculous things that I won't disclose here. It seemed to me that there wasn't a whole lot of logic being put into what needed to be done vs what was easier to do. I loved the co-workers I had in produce and meat, but that was about it. Orders would be forgotten or never mentioned until the last minute, one staff person would be left alone on a holiday, etc. Folks, take it from me: ONLY get your fresh fish on Mondays and Thursdays!! Next time, I'm coming in as a customer. At least I know what I'm looking for. read more

Great deli! Good friendly hometown service. Locally owned. Nice people. Some of the prices are better than the big markets. It's a small place, easy to get around and find what you want. Centrally located, almost in the center of town. How unusual is that? Fresh lobster, fresh fish. And possibly the best or second best deli in the area. I noticed another reviewer complained about pre-made sandwiches "in the case." The sandwiches in the case are made fresh every day. They are as fresh as what is in the hot case, again, made in the store every day. The salads are the same, pretty much made (and sold out) every single day. read more

love shopping here! its so great that you can find local produce, meats and other products here. The prices are very reasonable and almost always better than big y. The alcohol selection is decent as well, although slightly pricier than other places. I've gotten some yummy options from the deli and bakery. I also got a really delicious corned beef last year for st paddys day. the butchers are always helpful. I also like that they sell single trimmed chicken breasts- very convenient and fresh! As much as I would like to support a local supermarket, I just can't get past the terrible service I experienced at Fosters. Long story short, I was trying to return some ice cream that was spoiled right when I opened the carton (bad refrigeration maybe?). Not a big deal it happens. The man at the service desk scanned it and it didn't come up (had the same issue at check out, must of been a newer product). The level of disrespect he had for me, acting as if I was trying to scam him, was profound. He even was laughing with the freezer manager on the phone when he checked about the product. So, thinking I made an honest mistake I checked to see if I actually did buy it from Fosters. And low and behold an entire freezer full of the ice cream. Bottom line, No thanks. read more

Foster's has the potential to be the best food store in the area, but I agree with other reviewers: the attitudes & lack of basic manners of some of the staff make one not want to shop there. Also the quality of the seafood & produce is not what it used to be. One can often see whole fish that has not been gutted/cleaned & produce which is either completely wilted or otherwise water-logged. Time to invest in a sprinkler system guys! This store is one of my good childhood memories,.I used to live 3 min walk from it...One of the first places I wanted to shop upon moving back after decades..I went shopping there when i came back everything was just about as remember..produce is exceptional prices are better than Big Y in general.. they have same good service, decent selection for a store this size...the only reason i dont give them 5 stars is this.....having worked in a meat dept myself.. I immediately noticed the unkempt appearences of the meat dept workers, cutting meats in dirty coats.. bushy beards without beard nets...they need to take some pride in what they present to the public read more

I agree with Lauren. If I say 'hi" the checkout person looks at me like I am speaking a foreign language. No response and no thank you for shopping here. I know their job isn't the greatest, but if you don't like it, how about doing something else for a living that doesn't involve meeting the public. Like becoming a nun. Foster's is always my first choice for local shopping. The fruits and veggies are wonderful. They have the best selection and prices for herbs and hot peppers. The seafood and meat selection is amazing, wonderful and priced right. My daughter loves that she can always get a slice of cheese at the deli counter. read more

I'm honestly surprised this place has gotten such high reviews. Yes, I love their choices and their prices and their small family owned charm, but I absolutely hate the front end staff or even attempting to go there on a Monday before 2 PM. I'm most always greeted with "paper or plastic?" When I get to the check out. I've sent a couple complaints to them suggesting the front end staff needs an attitude change, never gotten a response, and about 2 of the cashiers actually make an effort to be friendly. After all, they are the last people I interact with before leaving the store and it sucks. I've stopped buying all my weeklhy groceries there. I go there for about two days worth of food or when I don't feel like dealing with the Big Y plaza. And before noon on a Mon after they closed for a day? Nothing is stocked (which I understand they're waiting on their vendors) but the rest of the staff doesn't have it together and are in a cloud even at 11 AM. I get friendly front end service at Big Y (or if we're comparing small stores Food City in Turners) any day of the week and that actually motivates me to choose them over Foster's. read more
