Sunday evening I got bit by a mosquito on my right eyelid. I am severely allergic to mosquito bites, but have never been bit in such a sensitive area before. Monday I woke up and my eye was so swollen, hot and red - I could barely open my right eye. My mom recommended that I see Dr. Wainess because the same thing happened to her before and he was able to help her. Unfortunately he was unavailable and it was an emergency, so the call center recommended I see Dr. Moore in Arcadia.
Upon meeting Dr. Moore, I told her about my situation, my allergic reaction to mosquito bites, and my current symptoms. For a majority of the time, I felt like she was being really condescending towards me. She prescribed me steroid eyedrops (the ones my mom said didn't work because the allergic reaction was on the EYELID, not inside the eye) and when I asked for oral antibiotics, she scoffed and told me she didn't think I needed them and that eyedrops would work faster. I took her word for it. Once I got home I immediately inserted the eyedrops, applied Benadryl cream to the bug bite, iced the area, and also took Benadryl. I took photos of my progression to see if it got better, and by the late evening, my eye was SO swollen that I could barely see out of it. You couldn't even see my eyeball. This morning I was so incredibly swollen that it had spread to the right side of my face. I looked unrecognizable. I'd post photos here but I honestly don't want to scare anyone because it was REALLY BAD.
Today I scheduled a last minute appointment with Dr. Wainess in San Gabriel and he told me right away he saw signs of cellulitis (skin infection) and that I needed antibiotics. I felt like he really cared. My eye was tender, red, hot to the touch and extremely swollen. Just hours after taking ONE pill, the swelling has gone down immensely and I can finally open my eye again.
I'm really disappointed by Dr. Moore's diagnosis and wish I felt like she cared more. I felt like they were just trying to get me out of there. When I walked out and said, "bye, thank you!" literally NO ONE responded to me and Dr. Moore was already walking away. I've never had such a bad experience at a doctor's office, especially during an emergency like a severe allergic reaction. I wasted time, energy, $40 on my co-pay, and $15 on a teeny tiny bottle of eyedrops that I don't even need. To top it off, they spelled my name wrong even though it was correct on my insurance card. I informed them and Dr. Moore told someone to fix it, but it clearly never was because I had issues picking up my antibiotics today due to my name being spelled incorrectly in their system.
I won't be back to this location and cannot recommend it UNLESS Dr. Wainess happens to be here. I wasn't trying to self diagnose myself, but I know how my body reacts to mosquito bites. The whole time I felt like Dr. Moore didn't believe what I was saying, which was really disheartening as a patient. read more
