If you are looking for an IEP advocate, I strongly recommend Anna Laboon. I tried to navigate my son's IEP process on my own for two years and briefly worked with another IEP advocate before I met Anna. It was not until Anna helped my family that I was finally able to relax and see frequent joy back in my son's demeanor. He is now learning and succeeding at school academically, behaviorally, and socially. Anna is amazing. I pulled my son out of public school because he struggled with major anxiety. He was in 1st grade and not reading yet, even though he repeated kindergarten twice. The schools did very little to help him. After I pulled my son out of school on my pediatrician's orders, I had him tested by a reading specialist. He was diagnosed with major learning disabilities. I had no idea where to start in homeschooling him, but knew I had to do something different than the traditional public school route. Thankfully, I found Anna and Activ8 learning center. She came highly recommended from my son's counselor, and she has been an absolute Godsend. We make the drive from Huntington to Newport several days a week so she can tutor him one on one, and she has worked wonders with him!! She uses a combination of many different teaching methods that would have cost me a fortune to purchase on my own, and she creates a customized learning plan for him that incorporates different aspects of each of the teaching methods. She is constantly adjusting and customizing her lesson plans to fit my son's style and pace of learning. Her training in these different methods have been invaluable. She is so positive and sweet and caring with my son, and she knows just how to pull him out of his shell and get through to him. He is learning so much! In just over a month, he is already reading and his lessons are almost above grade level! He is building confidence with her that I haven't seen in him before. He doesn't have the learning disabilities we originally thought he had and has taken off with Anna's help. She has really worked wonders with him. I went from having a child with such severe anxiety that he was physically sick all the time and crying every day, to a child who is excited to learn. He loves going to see Anna, and she continues to help him overcome a lot of his anxiousness by creating a super positive learning environment for him. She has also been invaluable in helping me develop a long term plan for my son, taking extra time to talk through all of his issues and options with me. I don't know what I would do without her! She is truly a miracle worker in my son's life! read more

I was over the moon yesterday when I read my sons essay that he wrote for 6th grade last night. Over the Summer I had my son take writing lessons at Activ8 and boy did they pay off. Honestly could not believe my son wrote this essay it was that good!!!!! I love this place and want to continue going here throughout my sons schooling. They have helped my boy go from hating school to loving it! Tutoring keeps him ahead of the curve which just makes him feel good! The tutors and the owner REALLY DO CARE!!!! OMG!!! You would think our son just got home from Disneyland when he finishes a session with Anna!! The way she teaches and gets through to him has been a fun journey for him. Not only was our son transferred to new school in 1st Grade, no friends, the only one that could not read.... His insecurities got the best of him. Now after a couple of months, he is at his grade level of reading. It's so fun that he can read EVERYTHING now!! I can honestly say that my children (ages 6 and 10) genuinely look forward to their sessions at Activ8 each week. They have found all of their tutors to be very engaging and I have found them to be effective! My daughter is performing at a 9.4 grade level yet is only in 4th grade so I am grateful that the Activ8 team can successfully challenge her and find innovative ways to stimulate her. With her tutor, she has worked on everything from creating structure for writing stories (and even won a writing contest!) to long division and multiplying fractions, which she has now mastered with ease. My son, on the other hand, who has a short attention span and can be known to be a little wild, is just starting to read and I am very impressed with the techniques and strategies used by the tutors to keep him focused on the task at hand. I've seen growth in both my children and am very happy with the results provided by Activ8. read more

My son is dyslexic and was having a very hard time in school. Anna is incredible and has been heaven sent! she not only helps my son with his struggles with reading, but she is also very kind, thoughtful and helpful in teaching me how to help him! She and her staff have done such an excellent job of making tutoring fun, yet educational. I also take my younger daughter there and she loves it as well. They use many different teaching methods, as each kid is different, and find a way to reach each child and appeal to their individuality. They are also very helpful and understand kids/moms have busy schedules and try to help with scheduling as much as possible. I have been to many tutoring centers and this is the first time where i feel like they truly care about my kids and their progress.
