I have two kids who are currently in 9th and 12th grade. Barun Academic Center has been a part of…read moretheir lives since they were in elementary school. As a result, both kids have a solid foundation in math and their writing skills are outstanding. My freshman kid is in pre-calculus right now, and says that class is the easiest of all of the subjects. My 12th grader finished High School Calculus AB and BC (by junior year) getting one A and 3x A+ for those 4 semesters. Because of all of the supplemental math drilling from Baruns, she said calculus, was pretty easy for her. In addition, my eldest kid's writing skills have grown so much through the years while taking various writing classes at Baruns. Baruns has outstanding teachers for writing (among their favs are Stark, Hughes and Jelnick) as well as the math subjects (S. Yoon, et., al). My eldest was able to publish a clinical case report study in a medical journal as a senior in high school. The medical Doctor who reviewed the article prior to publishing, was amazed at her writing process. Much of this development in her writing ability, we attribute to her years spent in supplemental writing classes provided by Baruns. My kids have also benefited from other classes offered such as SAT prep (boot camp), Biology and Chemistry prep. All helpful in allowing my kids to feel comfortable in those classes when taking them in high school. The principal, Ms. Yuri will treat your kids as one of her own, once you are enrolled in any class. She is tenacious, yet loving and will never let your kids slide in to mediocrity, academically. We appreciate all that she has done for our kids and our family.

The majority of my time at Barun consisted of Writing and Math courses throughout elementary, middle, and high school. The preparation and high expectations of success worked excellently to make kids like myself become high achieving especially in the academically competitive city of Irvine. It helped me excel in APPAS, GATE, honors, and bridge exams. In addition, the SAT courses did an amazing job of familiarizing me with the test and preventing test fatigue by having us take constant practice exams. I was very satisfied with my scores and grades throughout my education and I can not thank Barun, specifically Yuri (the lady in charge), enough. Yuri wants the best for her students and this was portrayed through her understanding, caring, yet firm personality. She stresses the importance of learning and this is also representative through the teachers selected for the academy. Barun was different from the other prep centers because of the level of unmatched dedication and involvement that Yuri had in every single student's path. Besides all of my achievements, Barun revives a happy childhood memory in retrospect. I highly recommend checking out Barun because it is truly unique.

This fall, my son Peter, who is a Sophomore, took a practice ACT and scored well, but not up to his Ivy League ambitions. We thought we would have to go and sacrifice his entire summer at a place like Elite to get the scores up, but then we heard of this company. We called them in late February, and they claimed that with once a week sessions, they could get Peter ready by June, which astonished us. The service was absolutely excellent, our tutor, Mary, was incredibly skilled and professional, and they even provided all the necessary instructional materials. In the end, Matt's service surpassed our dreams. In April, after just five sessions, Mary gave Peter the go-ahead to take the ACT. He took the shot, and we were overjoyed when the scores came back. He had gotten a 35 on the ACT, a 3 point improvement on just over a month ago. He is now able to have a chance at any college whatsoever in just the tenth grade! I would eagerly recommend this service, and Mary in particular, to the family of any student who has to deal with these things.

Dominique is professional and does a great job tailoring the lessons to each student's needs. For us, as I'm sure it is for most students, time is a big factor. It makes all the difference when your tutor understands how to make the most of the lesson time and homework. And Dominique gave great test day advice and followed up with us as tests were cancelled and rescheduled because of Covid. Both of my kids got their score with one sitting. We're so thankful for Dominique's help.

I'm writing this from a parent's perspective. My son is in 9th grade and goes to Modus for both ACT…read moreprep (bootcamp this past spring and then again this coming summer) AND college counseling. There are a million places that it is almost overwhelming. I've come to realize that many "hagwans" (learning centers) outright lie about what they can deliver and are totally shady. I liked Modus because Esther and Josephine were down to earth and very realistic. I really liked their approach and genuineness. I realize that not all 9th graders are prepared to take the ACT, but since his math is already advanced, I wanted him to get exposure to the test so he could see what he was in for. I had him go in a take the diagnostic test, which he scored well enough to make it into the spring bootcamp. My son REALLY enjoyed it. He liked learning the strategies and tips that he learned. I registered him for the upcoming summer bootcamp because HE wanted to go. Regarding college counseling with Esther. Again, I realize he is a bit young, but I wanted him to get an idea of what he needs to do. Esther spent time with him one-on-one and was able to pull so much out of him (I'm still amazed at how she was able to do it). She put together an amazing plan for him with some really excellent ideas. They seem to really relate well with students - my son thinks they are pretty cool, which is saying a lot. He went to other places and hated it, so I'm glad he has had a great experience. If you are looking to give your child an academic advantage, but with caring and genuine people, then I highly recommend Modus. UPDATE: My son's test scores improved DRAMATICALLY by attending the Summer ACT Bootcamp. I am extremely pleased with his scores and he really enjoys it, which is important.

His expertise goes beyond what you can get out of any prep book. And I don't think I could've scored as well without his help. I learned to portion my time and he gives special techniques and hints which he developed himself. Also, he was very open to questions and he was very kind and approachable. So don't be afraid to ask questions and I guarantee, he will give you a very personalized experience. Also, my college counselor, Esther really found extracurricular activities for me that I really enjoyed and pertained to my major. She also helped me brainstorm ideas for my essays and personally, my common app essay turned out to be really unique and my personality shined through. And it was very out of the box which colleges really loved. She helped me get into so many great schools like Boston College, Carnegie Mellon University, UCLA, and Georgetown University. Overall, my experience with all of the staff at Modus (it was called Edugroup before) has made my college application process much more enjoyable and less stressful and I think I learned more about myself through this process. I really recommend Modus!
