What I'd like to first note is that when my family and I first had a consultation with Justin, he always put myself, as the student, first and foremost in the decision-making process as far as my goals and needs. I initially found Premiere Prep on Yelp and was impressed with all the great reviews, so we contacted the business and spoke in length with the founder, Justin Lee. He was quite helpful and gave us great information on their academic counseling services. I used Premiere Prep through all four years of high school and I can confidently say that without the help of my counselor, there is no way I'd be where I am today (freshman mechanical engineer at UC Irvine). Coming in to high school I had no idea what to do in order to prepare for college applications and I wasn't very motivated to maintain good grades. Because I'm the oldest sibling in my family we had no idea how high school worked and what I needed to do to be successful. I was feeling pretty overwhelmed and my high school counselor was too inexperienced and busy with other students to give me the help I needed. I only gained a good grasp on this once I started working with Premiere Prep. From the start, my counselor was always extremely supportive and pushed me to do the best I possibly could. He also quickly cleared up all of my confusion in regards to class scheduling and what to take; together we created a personal plan for my entire time at highschool. In addition to answering all my questions and setting me on the most optimal course possible, Premiere Prep also helped make myself a more complete, responsible person. Several of my sessions were devoted to my improvement, and I was able to learn proper study habits, time and stress management, how to write a resume, and so many other things. I was referred to Justin by a good friend of mine and I was thoroughly impressed by his knowledge of the UC system and his genuine interest in our concerns. Our oldest of three boys was just starting high school and, therefore, it was our first experience at the whole college planning thing. We had just moved from the East Coast to CA, after 9th grade already started, and we were very nervous about college entrance requirements. I wanted to get a plan in place ASAP so that his short high school years would be efficiently utilized. What can our son do to compete, not only with others at his high school, but with students from nearby high schools that offered a better curriculum, better extracurriculars, etc.? Our high school didn't offer IB, didn't have a Science Olympiad or Math Olympiad team, didn't offer robotics or STEM programs. We had a million and one questions -- including if we should just up and move to a different district altogether so that our son had a better chance. Through all our questions -- some probably very silly and way overly thought out (the type that can only come from a freaked out Asian mother) -- Justin was patient and understanding. He asked about our son's academic progress to date, his personality, his current interests and daily schedule. Then he tailored very sound, realistic advice, not only for shaping my son's academic high school career, but ensuring a well-rounded high school experience, both for college entrance requirements as well as for our son's childhood. Justin has first-hand experience with UC admissions (having worked on that side of the field) and dispensed proven, expert advice for our son. He alleviated our concerns by prioritizing key elements colleges consider when looking at applicants. My son is now 17 and entering his junior year at USC with a double major in biophysics and computer science. He was a National Merit finalist and received at age 15 (high school junior) an invitation to skip his senior year and attend USC's Resident Honors program (less than 30 students WORLDWIDE made up the program my son's year) on a full four-year USC Trustee scholarship, plus several other scholarships along the way. It is getting harder and harder for kids nowadays to get into a good college. That is why we decided to utilize the services of Premiere Prep for all three of our children. Two are currently in excellent universities (and loving it!) and our third child will be entering his vital junior year in high school. Early on we noticed that the counselors at the public high schools were overloaded with work and didn't have the time to give one on one attention to each and every student. Therefore as parents, we decided to explore other avenues to help our children to become better informed and prepared with what was needed to qualify for the many different choices available for colleges. Based on this input and soliciting input from us (the parents), Premiere Prep mapped out an academic plan tailored for each child to follow. From time to time, adjustments to the plan were made based on inputs from each meeting. This company has people who have worked WITH college admissions and thus, knows EXACTLY (cannot emphasize anymore than that) what colleges are looking for. They are basically the gamer's guide to getting into that dream college (which they have done for me); a cheat sheet in other words. If you (parents) want your child to have the best opportunity to get into competitive colleges (or have a large choice of colleges to choose from), I definitely recommend Premiere Prep. Coming from personal experience, I know that senior year (prior to being done with applications) for high school students can be stressful. With many AP classes, extracurricular activities, and college applications all compiled into one large mess of tasks to do, it is way too easy to forget a few tasks for college applications that can pretty much guarantee rejection like submitting transcripts. Counselors working for Premiere Prep make sure you don't miss anything which is a great perk when juggling with a large workload. I have seen people rescinded from their college because of one easy mistake. Finally, I have to talk about close relationship between counselor and student. My counselor, Bea Nguyen, is very easy to talk with and is very personable. Despite my introverted personality, she was someone I wasn't afraid to talk with and ask questions. In other words, I was able to be myself around her which is crucial if a counselor wants to write a personal statement. I have worked with her ever since my freshman year of high school and within those four years, she has helped me grow from a high school freshman that took many cp (non-honors) courses to a 3.93 GPA Mechanical Engineering major at UCI (zot zot). Even in college, despite not working with her anymore, she continues to support me as I pursue my career as a mechatronics engineer with an emphasis in control theory and mechanical design. This type of relationship between customer and client is rare. In summary of this long (probably too long) review, Premier Prep is a great choice. Our family use Premiere Prep for both my sister and cousin for the last past three years. It was one of the best decisions our family has ever made. Over the past four years, I have learned more practical and impactful information from Premiere Prep than I did in my two years of graduate school for counseling. Navigating the path to college is a long and difficult one if you don't know what you're doing or where to start--which is, for the most part, most of us.
