The transfer counselors offered helpful advice on how to transfer to either the Cal State system or UCI. Online. During her first year, she attended in person until March 2020. Then most of her classes were online except for a yoga class. As with other online students, she did not really get to know other students in real life. Classes. She enjoyed all her anthropology classes; foreign-language classes were good but were hard online. Math classes were OK. No class was bad. Most professors were good and transitioned effectively to online teaching. Campus. In fall 2019, the campus was often busy, and was less busy on Fridays. From April 2020 through summer 2022, the campus was largely empty as most students were online. The cafeteria was good before it closed for the pandemic; it is still closed. Our daughter liked the food trucks and coffee cart! The library is a good place to study. IVC still offers free parking and students can ride OCTA buses for free.

UCI has traditionally felt more like a commuter school, although they've recently finished building…read moreadditional on-campus housing, which should help alleviate some of the housing shortages in the surrounding area. The overall student body and graduating classes are much larger now, and the campus experience has changed considerably. It's easier to get lost in the crowd, and you can end up making a lot of contacts without necessarily building lasting relationships with people who live close enough to regularly study, collaborate, or work together. There's a difference between having a large network of acquaintances and having an accessible community. The school itself is still doing its job, but if you're expecting the same campus climate, student experience, or return on investment that you might have gotten 20 or 30 years ago, things are going to be different. That's something worth keeping in mind if you're considering attending, especially if you're paying out of pocket rather than receiving substantial financial aid.

I have a broken right elbow. I have a surface hematoma and I didn't break anything on my buttocks, but when I fell, it took a very serious bruise. I cannot lie on my back. I cannot sit in a chair. The PA comes in to tell me I'm going home. All I have to do is walk 20 steps. I managed to walk 20 steps. So they felt I qualified to go home. I told the PA I was not going home unless my pain was under control. They gave me morphine and said it would work fairly quickly. It's an hour and a half and I cannot move my elbow or buttocks. I am in excruciating pain when I try to move. I asked the PA if they needed to send home a few patients because they needed the space. I told her all I had heard from the very beginning is that you won't have to stay. I told her I no longer trusted the decisions of this hospital. I also told her I was not going home with the pain I'm now experiencing. If something is good. I wanna call it good. If something is bad. I wanna call it bad. I will send this letter to the headquarters of UCI. I am deeply disappointed that they lost the respect I had for them. I trusted UCI. When the ambulance said I was going there, I said yippee Calle. I will not be saying that again. Sincerely yours, Carolyn Cardamis

I would seriously think twice before choosing Concordia's ABSN program. In my experience, the…read moreprogram is very unorganized, communication is inconsistent, and the support system for students is extremely lacking. I don't think the biggest issue is whether you can pass your classes. It's possible to read the assigned material, study for exams, and maintain good grades. But nursing education should be about more than being able to pass a test. You should be able to question whether the program is actually giving you the knowledge, skills, confidence, and clinical preparation needed to become a competent and well-prepared nurse. For me, that was the biggest concern. I was doing well academically, so my decision had nothing to do with being unable to handle the workload or difficulty of nursing school. It was about the quality of the education and the lack of support I felt I was receiving. Nursing school is already demanding, and when students are paying close to $65,000, they should not feel like they have to teach themselves everything just to get through the program. I expected a structured program with consistent communication, accessible faculty, and a strong support system. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. A lot of the learning felt like being given a textbook and being expected to teach yourself the material. Even in lab, there was not always a clear or structured approach to teaching the skills. At times, it felt as though students were expected to already have a certain level of knowledge or experience rather than being properly taught and guided through the material. Even asking questions could feel difficult, which made it harder to build confidence and actually understand what we were supposed to be learning. For a program preparing students to care for real patients, I expected much more hands-on instruction, guidance, and support. The overall structure of the program was also frustrating because the faculty are very unorganized in what they communicate to students regarding policies, class rules, expectations, etc. Even the textbooks used across different courses could present important clinical information differently, which can become confusing and conflicting when you are trying to develop a consistent understanding of information that is critical to assessing and caring for actual patients. Going into the program, I understood that it was a hybrid structure; however, when I took a campus tour and specifically asked about the format, I was told that we would be in class at least three to four times a week for classes, not just for labs and exams. Other students had been given the same impression and were also surprised by the actual structure of the program. It felt like a completely asynchronous program, which isn't at all ethical for nursing. The difference between what was communicated beforehand and what students actually experienced added to my concerns about the program's overall organization and transparency. Overall, my biggest concern is the quality of preparation students are actually receiving to become skillful nurses. There is a significant gap between the knowledge and skills I obtained here compared to what I have seen from students coming from other nursing programs, and that difference is concerning when the end goal is to provide safe, competent patient care. There are many other horrible reviews about this program that I wish I had seen before committing. The amazing and rewarding feeling of getting into a nursing program with a challenging acceptance rate disappears once you experience its structure.
