Over the years, I have been moved between multiple providers due to provider turnover within the practice. I recently called for a refill and was told by the receptionist that I could not receive any medication, not even a short bridge refill, until I completed an appointment. I was given no advance notice that this would happen. In the past, I have been able to schedule an appointment and receive a small temporary supply until I could be seen. Because of this sudden refusal, I am now experiencing withdrawal symptoms, including brain zaps, after abruptly stopping a medication I have taken for years. My concern is not simply about scheduling. My concern is the lack of continuity of care, lack of notice, and lack of a safe medication plan for an established psychiatric patient. I understand the importance of follow-up appointments, but abruptly leaving a long-term patient without a bridge refill or provider review feels unsafe and unacceptable. This experience has been very disappointing after four years with the practice, and I would not feel comfortable recommending them based on how this was handled.

The MD I'd been seeing for years in Austin charges $200 starting out per visit and that price changes according to the visit charges. I did some research and found Salcedo Family Care and the pricing is very reasonable! I was even able to contact Dr. Salcedo prior to making an appointment to explain my situation and he was very friendly, giving me the options to get labs done now and then recheck in a few weeks or to restart my previous dose of thyroid medication and then check labs in a few weeks to make sure the dose is still correct. Most physicians I know wouldn't give the patient that option but, by doing so, I'm saving money and not having to have to pay for multiple labwork. My appointment lasted about an hour- he asked about all aspects of my life, did the vital signs himself, obtained a complete health history and was overall very thorough. Even though my main visit reason was to get back on my thyroid medications- he made sure to ask about my general health and to see if I needed anything else. I felt heard, not rushed, and like an actual person instead of just a diagnosis in a long line of patients. Using the lab he is partnered with also makes my lab work a fraction of the cost of what it was when I HAD insurance! I was able to schedule appointment online and was able to be seen right away- no waiting, no phone calls and holding while they look for an appointment- overall, just an amazing experience. The therapists were nice & made some progress, but they couldn't even remember my son's name half the time. There were a multitude of problems, but the nail in the coffin was when we showed up for a therapy session, after a year of therapy, twice a week & were told we owed close to $1000 because of their billing error. If we did not pay right then, we would no longer be able to come for therapy. My son was, at that time, non-verbal, and had other issues related to autism, which he had just been diagnosed with. He desperately needed therapy, and we felt like we weren't at all valued, and that he was just another patient, just another check. I found RRCTC kind of by accident, and it is one of the best "accidents" to ever happen to us. My son has seen every therapist there at one time or another & he loves them all. They are some of the most caring, wonderful people we've ever met. The owner, Melissa, is...beyond amazing. Not only does she work with my son (and he ADORES her), but she takes the time to listen if you need it. I've never felt like my son was "just a patient" or that we were a paycheck, like the other place made me feel. The therapists have made such a huge difference in my son's life, and we feel loved and cared for...not many places do that these days. While I hope that at some point, my son will no longer require therapy, for as long as he does, we will stay with Melissa & RRCTC.

I called to inquire about an evaluation for my child. The lady with what sounded like an English accent asks if my insurance was with an employer. It was not. Then she asks "is it Marketplace"? Not knowing what marketplace was, I said yes. Then she curtly said that this insurance was not accepted. After the call, I logged into my insurance (which was purchased directly from UnitedHealthcare) and, sure enough, they WERE in network, as I had UHC Choice, and not Marketplace, I call back telling her this information and was referred to the manager, and he was repeating the same information. I told him I misspoke and clarified that I did not have Marketplace insurance and that I purchased the insurance directly from the UHC website, which he claimed this wasn't a thing (YES, this is a thing, because I did it. ). They didn't bother to fully check to see if the office was in network (didn't actually ask for my Member ID information or other details) which is what dozens of offices have done as standard protocol. Eventually the man did say that we can take my insurance, but wouldn't be able to accept my husband's Aetna insurance in 2026 - but that I could still schedule something under my current insurance. ABSOLUTELY NOT! The conversation with reception left a bad taste in my mouth and I have scheduled evaluation services elsewhere. I would recommend in-house office training on how not to escalate insurance issues and on common customer service skills. And if insurance companies are listing your office as in-network when it's not, you need to figure out how to fix that on your end.

Dr. Ikbal is shockingly misinformed about nutrition, pushing urban legends that were disproved…read moredecades ago. This is all the more astounding because nutrition was her undergraduate degree. She also doesn't appear to practice evidence-based medicine. After her asking me what I eat in a typical day, she asked, "Where do you get your protein?" (Ugh. The idea that protein is hard to come by is flatly wrong and severely outdated. As Dr. Nestle, chair of the NY University nutrition dept. said, *26* years ago "We never talk about protein anymore, because it's absolutely not an issue, even among children. If anything, we talk about the dangers of high-protein diets. Getting enough is simply a matter of getting enough calories." The DV/RDA is ~8% of calories from protein, while grains are ~13% protein, vegetables 23%, etc.) She then tried to tell me that I had to combine plants foods to get a complete protein. (That was an urban legend promoted by a popular 1971 book, whose author recanted ten years later. The USDA nutrient database shows that individual vegetables, grains, and beans have all essential amino acids, in higher amounts than what we need.) Finally, she said I should eat more fat. I asked if there were science to support the idea that an addition of fat to an otherwise healthy diet improves health outcomes. Her reply was like, "I've been a doctor for 20 years...." Meaning, no science. By the way, she asked why I chose her, and I said that one of her patients wrote in a review about how he was able to get off all his meds for Crohn's Disease. Dr. Ikbal replied that the patient took himself off the meds, it wasn't her doing. Anyway, after hearing so much misinformation in just a brief, limited interaction, I have to wonder what other misinformation Dr. Ikbal is operating on. If you want a physician who practices evidence-based medicine, you'll probably want to look elsewhere. UPDATE: After I left the above review, suddenly DOZENS of glowing 5-star reviews appeared within a few days, about 1/3 of which are from people not even in the Austin area, many not even in the same state, and many of whom have zero other reviews on Yelp. Yelp has understandably moved most of these to the "Reviews Not Recommended" section. Is Dr. Ikbal buying fake reviews? Draw your own conclusions.
