The therapists were using the small waiting room to meet with families both before and after our appointment. I was not expecting to have to wait in the waiting room, especially not when there was another family there. They still have a paper sign in sheet and community pen! No hand sanitizer out for patients after using the pen either. Given the nature of their work, I was really expecting a safer environment. I did not feel safe there and we will not be back.

I thought that would forever be my worst story of therapy gone wrong, of a therapist superimposing their own beliefs and issues on me. Diana hit a new record. She "fired" me as a client and pulled wildly unethical moves before doing so. I wholly believe that there is a time to part ways when therapy isn't serving the client or when a client is rejecting help from the therapist to everyone's detriment. Therapists have just as much of a right to end the relationship as clients do. The reason I'm writing this has nothing to do with the farewell and everything to do with how it was handled. I have an eating disorder. I made it clear from the start that I didn't care that she didn't specialize in them. I'd had enough therapy around eating disorders and wanted to take a new approach. I also told her in our first session that if she thought it wasn't a fit to have open communication because I would be doing so. I've played the "suffer through a relationship that isn't working" game too much at this point in therapy. We had weekly sessions for months. I thought many of them were helping. But then I told her how many calories I consumed during the week. That was undeniably the point where she flipped. We talked for a month or so more. She started talking to my dietician more. That seemed logical to me. And then she started telling my therapist I needed to go to treatment. Asking her why she hadn't suggested it or wasn't pushing it on me. (She has.) I am in no way a high risk anorexic. Perhaps treatment wouldn't hurt but my life right now prioritizes above something that isn't necessary. She pressured me and I said no, several times. And then the day came where she let me tell her about my life before interrupting and starting the conversation of removal of services provided. Like I mentioned, that alone wasn't the issue. What WAS the issue was that she had also called my dietician and tried to pressure her into leaving me. To the point of my dietician's discomfort and recognition that abandonment on that level would be detrimental and more harmful that good. (How Diana didn't see that, I don't know.) She gave me an ULTIMATUM of treatment or no therapy. She told me I COULD NOT go to therapy ANYWHERE until I dealt with my eating disorder. (And no, this wasn't just in reference to being cognitively unable to proceed with EMDR.) She wouldn't give me referrals. She made fun of the shirt I was wearing that day that said, "Mental health is health," because I wouldn't go to treatment. I was in utter shock during that last session so I didn't really have responses beyond saying no to treatment and that I understood where she was coming from. But none of those things are okay and I should have said that to her then. I regret that. Fuck that. I deserve therapy. Everyone does. She clearly spooked when eating disorder stuff came up, was not educated on it, and chose to bully and threaten me instead of just saying, "I'm not qualified in this topic and don't feel comfortable proceeding." Period. Period. Period. If you don't fit in her little box of qualifications, stay away. And if you pick up any of her own anxieties, leave. It's not worth wasting your time.

Outside of their counseling expertise, they have great administrative staff. Many payment options available. I needed receipts to submit last minute before my FSA money was deleted. They mailed them the day I called and I got them the very next day!!! No charge to me for the postage, which was greatly appreciated. Seriously. A lot of other offices would have been like, "You can drive over and pick them up at our front desk."

After having an evaluation at kidventures, the OT took the time to explain Sensory processing disorder and she gave me lots of resources that my husband and I could implement at home. My son loves going to "play" there and he talks about the "big gym" all the time! His OT did a school visit and kept in contact with his teacher to help her understand his behaviors and sensory needs. It's amazing that he can sit still through circle time now and is much better at following directions. He is even more coordinated and able to keep up with his friends during sports activities. The best part has been that his confidence has grown and we are so grateful for the services here.

I was starting to doubt the value of occupational therapy when someone referred me to Kidventures. From the initial evaluation, I could tell that they GOT my daughter. They REALLY SAW HER, so the plan that was developed was specific to her needs/goals. They knew what/when/how to tackle the issues to help her develop. I was included every step of the way and encouraged to participate. I received valuable feedback after every session and was given suggestions for things I could do at home to further help. My daughter is now a different little girl-she's mastered so many skills and continues to amaze me with her progress! Her physical abilities, as well as the ease with which we now move though our lives (those difficult transitions are sooo much easier!) make for happier days immediately and long term hope for a bright future. We toured on a Friday so we didnt see but one child there. They do m-th at the center and Fridays they drive to your house and do the session at your home. Sounds amazing! I loved the girl I spoke to. I really would have looked into this place further if it wasnt at minimum 32 minutes away from my house - probably an hour during peak traffic - all the way back to RR/Gtown area. I also discovered the sessions are only 4 hours total. This would significantly decrease the amount of time she got weekly and it just wasn't going to work for our schedule. In addition, they charge you for every mile of a certain # for the Fridays that an RBT or BCBA drives to your house, plus whatever fees were involved. Speaking of fees, they wanted $300 to start therapy here, something they said they don't bill to insurance. This was just not going to work for us but i'm sure it is an amazing facility for those it is a better fit for.

I have twins of 4 years old, and they both are diagnosed as Autism. they were a delay in communication and always used single word till the age of 4. From October 2018 we were a part of Building Blocs, and we started Speech Therapy for my girls with Ms. Laura and Ms. Erin. Really, they both are awesome and now we are feeling the improvements slowly with our kid's communication. Their eye contacts improved, they started using sentences. I am really happy to see the improvements. We decided to start ABA Therapy for our kids in Building Blocs, from mid of February the services will get a start. We are so excited about that. The services in front desk and the with insurance are awesome. Actually, I was worried when we started the ABA assessment because I thought the waiting list will be long. Worth. The. Wait…read more Dr. Karnik looks at the whole child and makes recommendations based on research and innovative ideas. We never feel pressured, but we do feel his recommendations have put our child back on track. Nutrition, testing, medication, training... it is all part of the package that Dr.Karnik encourages for our family. His recommendations are based on research and long term success. Dr. Karnik speaks with my child with a gentle concern and respect that is very encouraging. Misunderstood kids need that! Just being listened to by an adult who listens with thoughtful understanding is HUGE. Yes, we could just get an Rx from our pediatrician. However, working with Dr. Karnik has led us to a diagnosis and treatment that was more nuanced. His Nurse Tina is totally on top of things, she review the notes with Dr. Karnik and responds within a day. and they have a patient portal for general questions between appointments.

They even coordinated schedules so that we could each be seen at the same time and minimize all the back and forth of appointments, which really helped our stress levels. The therapists themselves are highly trained and really put us at ease that we are in the right care. Calls and emails are always returned the same day, which is so nice when we need to cancel, get a copy of a statement or forgot to get a school note. Added bonus - they keep snacks and drinks stocked in case we are running from one place to another and didn't get a chance. Highly recommend all the therapists here.
