I like Ace Hardware stores. Most are small-ish but friendly and responsive to the needs of the average homeowner; glass cutting and re-screening services, yard and garden rentals conveniently just down the street. For these and other reasons I expect to spend a little more at Ace than at the blue or orange great-crate stores and usually the money-for-goods exchange is worth the small premium. Most Ace's have a special place in the community, a specific need or niche where they lineup nicely. Alas, my current projects are rather involved and the ones not handled by professional contractors are better suited to the home improvement world. When you need something or service you can't get from a Big Box Store, consider this Ace Hardware. Should really shop Ace Hardware or at least the one in Cornelius more often. I tend to use the Big Box Stores too much because they have a lot of very general items. I on many occasions need something a bit out of the norm and you get the deer in the headlights look. I remember a time a number of years ago, power was out due to a snowstorm and I needed a kerosene heater for auxiliary heat I had the forethought to call ahead and reserve one of the last ones they had. Went to pick it up and while I was picking it up, a young guy with a wife who was probably about 6 months pregnant and two young children walked in and were crushed to find out they were sold out. I told them go ahead and take the one I had ordered and I would move down the list. They were grateful but Ace Hardware moved me up the list to when the next shipment came in later, I was one of the first they called. The only reason for the long dialog above is that is a store that cares about their customers. Owner and the older lady were very rude when trying to spend over 40 dollars in plumbing supplies all because their inability to give a price and inability to help. Hopefully the woman who said she was the owner truly is the owner because if she is not she just did a huge disservice to their local business. Ace hardware is one of those staples in a small town community... They aren't flashy, they are a little expensive but and they don't have everything that a large box store would have. My review would be 5 for customer service (and the post office) and 3 for he rest of he store. I can get most everything I need in one store and for a better price by going the same distance in the opposite direction. But I won't ever get the same small town greeting that I seem to always get when I come to Ace. And there is always someone there to assist you with a huge smile on their face. This location, in particular, also has the most under-the-radar post office. Need to skip the long lines at the Davidson or Cornelius post office? Head to the back of Ace hardware in Cornelius to send your items. I honestly don't know if they have ever single service that a stand alone PO has but I have yet to have any issues here. My mother was made to feel stupid and a return was not honored for item bought 3 days ago. There is nothing in the Ace Hardware return policy that would support this denial. My family has used this ace Hardware for years and it is a great location for my parents... but they apparently choose to take advantage of the elderly! Went in for paint with my kids. Store was empty with 5 employees standing around. Woman at register had her mask on chin eating at register. One older woman came right up to me because I was lowering my mask to drink coffee, told me I needed to go outside. I guess the rules only apply to paying customers. I now realize why the store is empty. Woman cashier has attitude and was shaking her head at us . I will go somewhere else next time. read more

I love this store. I will go here first every time before going to Lowe's or Home Depot. They are always super-helpful even when I go in with a problem that I am trying to solve just wandering around looking for a solution. So many times I have been there and someone asks if they can help me and I respond "well, I am just thinking of how to solve this problem". Invariably they ask what is it you are trying to solve and once I tell them they offer several solutions. I will always support this fine local business over corporate America....sure they don't have everything that Lowes and Home Depot have but 90% of the time they do. Walked into ace yesterday around 5pm 1-21-16 to deliver a paid priority package. All I had to do was drop it off but I wanted to make sure it was scanned to be safe. I waited at the counter(mind you, there was about 4-5 people working and was not that busy) people buying shovels and salt basically for our storm. I ring the bell at the post office counter, wait about 4-6 minutes (rang the bell in the 2 min mark as well) and no one comes. Now I go to the front desk, wait in line for another 1-2 min just to say"can someone take this paid package". Finally a woman come to the back post office counter and says "I'll just scan it in, so it's in the system but they might not pick it up for a few days". No problem. I said. Then the lady puts the package down and leaves without scanning it in. I say, I thought u were gonna scan it in. She says, oh, I can't......someone else had to do it. Wow. I say ok, no problem. Now I ask the lady how much the salt was, she says "it's ringing up 6$". I ask her where it is... She points to the far back corner of the store...First off, who's the manager of this place knowing it's a big storm in this area but let me keep all the salt in the back corner for no one to see. I grab a bag and carry it to the counter were that same lady is... She tells me it will be 11$ and some change. I say you just told me it was 6$. "Oh that's for the blue bag, not the green". I say where's the blue bag.....she asked a man, he was speechless because I guess there not used to having 6 customers in there at a time and he was flustered. I then look at the lady and say thanks anyways... I walk out the door. This is why I like the big box stores. I will never go to ace hardware again because of this. I'm writing to share an unpleasant experience with ACE store in Cornelius, NC. Having recently relocated to the area I immediately sought out independent businesses to do my shopping. In my experience I like to support local and generally find that I receive a higher level of customer service even though I may pay a little more than the big box stores. I purchased a fountain/water feature and they agreed to deliver it to my home. I was unaware at the time that delivery ended at my driveway! They informed me that company policy prohibited them from moving it any closer to the home. Important to note that my patio, where the fountain was going, was only 10' from where they dropped it. Yes 10' yet they refused to move it any further. When I went back to the store the manager assured me that he would have his moving guys call me the next day and come back out to move it the additional 10'. Not only did I not get a call from the movers but received a call from an ACE employee informing me that they would not move it any further and if I wanted to have it moved they could give me the name of a company that moves fountains!! I'm a big fan of supporting small businesses and shopping local: I've lived in Davidson for 6 years and spend hundreds of dollars every year at this particular ACE store, mostly on plants and yard stuff. Went to the store yesterday to buy a battery and some glue and as is often the case ended up with a bill of $97 after getting "lost" in the Christmas section. One of my purchases was a $40 wreath which I knew from the get-go might be too small for my door but the store is only a few minutes away so I didn't mind coming back to return it if I had to. Sure enough the wreath is not a good fit and I'm back at the store today: less than 24h after my initial purchase, wreath in mint condition (didn't even hang it) and price tag is still attached. They would NOT take it back and just pointed to a sign on the check-out counter that says "All holiday sales are final". So yes, there is indeed a sign but I never saw it, and certainly no one told me about this while I was checking out: I would not have bought this item if I knew I could not return it. This is a perfect example of why the "Big Stores" are winning the battle: if you don't have any flexibility you are going to loose your customers. They could have given me a store credit and I would have been perfectly happy with that solution: now I have a $40 wreath that I will never use and ACE hardware has lost a good customer. read more

I ordered a Weber grill and was told it would be ordered and delivered to my house on June 8, 2017. I placed the original order about 2 weeks prior to June 8. On June 7 I hadn't heard anything from Ace so called and was told it was on backorder and would not be available until around June 21. I went to the store and spoke to the person the employees said was the owner and she was of little help. She didn't seem concerned that they would not meet their stated delivery date. She indicated that Weber was having a problem. I asked if it might be longer than June 21 and she admitted that was possible. I told her that if I had known of this situation I would not have ordered the grill in the first place. I told her I had family coming in on weekend of June 9 and she seemed unconcerned. She indicated that all grills were not on back order and I could order a different Weber grill at a higher price. I expected more from a company that sells customer service as a real advantage. I was very disappointed. I at least expected them to call me prior to delivery date to explain it was backordered rather than just not showing up. I'll stick with Lowe's hardware where if a mistake is made they own up to it instead of blaming the product company. Local is not always better. They must care first. Not good customer service! read more
