Hardest part of being on vacation is missing our fur babies! My boyfriend, friend and I were walking down South St and happened to come across Accent on Animals. We stopped in around 11:45am on a Friday, and we were greeted with the most awesome sales associate I've ever met at any store. Period. This friendly and helpful gentleman was extremely knowledgeable about their products, and he went above and beyond to advise us on picking up toys and treats for our pups at home. We told him our pups' breeds, ages and temperament, and he showed us things that we knew our pets would love. I ended up buying a champagne toy bottle, which by the way is double the price of the same toy back at home. I also got a peanut butter flavored bubble stick that would not only be a high value treat for my dog but also a fun jumping activity. In general I thought Accent on Animals was a great pet store. I only stopped in briefly to look for a super specific item, but I was impressed with the cleanliness, organization and selection of quality items in the store. Truly, nothing is out of place. This non-chain local pet stores carries everything from dog and cat supplies to fish and small pet items and even some in-between things. For a big city, I thought the prices actually seemed quite fair. If you can't find it here, you can't find it anywhere. The store is small but the amount of items in it is truly impressive. The owner has really maximized their space. I also watched an employee, or maybe even the owner, eloquently diffuse an awkward situation with a rude customer. He was kind and listened thoughtfully. Accent on Animals is really one of the ONLY choices in the Philadelphia area for small pet items unless you're prepared to drive to the outskirts of town for one of the bigger chain stores. If you have hamsters, guinea pigs - basically anything other than a cat or dog (in which case there is a far superiour selection at the local "Doggy Style" chain) - Accent on Animals is your one-stop-shop. It's flawed; the shelves are so close together that anyone above a size 4 is going to feel smooshed. The women who run the place (possibly lesbian lovers?) have a tendency to be kind of curt and short, even if you're a 2 year loyal customer like myself. Often times you are at their ordering mercy; I had pet rats and for the first year of shopping there I got them a certain kind of food, and then one day I went in to be told that they had decided to stop ordering it. Also it's often the case that they have something you need, but they only have one TYPE of that item and it's not the type you need. For instance with my guinea pigs I need water bottles that can hang off of the side of a wire grid cage; the only type of water bottle they sell comes with suction cups to be mounted to an aquarium style cage/tank. Despite the hit-or-miss nature of what they carry, it really is the only "local" choice, and the price is right. *EDIT* - Also, be wary that their return/exchange policy is non existent and it seems like they make it up as they go along. I bought a bottle of orange urine-removal spray that we ended up not needing, and I had the receipt and it was unused, but she didn't want to take it back because "people take liquid things like that and pour them out and fill them up with water." Ahh my local pet store. My cat has enjoyed many a treasure from AOA. Litter, toys, but not food. I normally buy that at DoggyStyle. Still, when I can get to AOA, I find that I get exactly what I need. They stock Scoop-Away which Earl Grey (my cat) likes. I also once picked up bird food for a friend. They had a pretty good selection of it and the prices seemed decent. I don't know much about birds. Anyhoo, I'm glad it's there and it's a nice spot to stop into to grab stuff. The one woman who I've dealt with each time has been pleasant and one time she even threw in a mouse filled with catnip. That sent Earl running around like crazy for a while until he succumbed to a drug-induced coma. His name should probably be Hunter S. Thompson. Anyway, 4 stars. Good place. I would like some later hours so I wouldn't have to plan a special trip. read more

My bf FINALLY convinced me to adopt kittens, and thank god he did because they are awesome and cuddly and cute! He got so into the idea that before we even filled out the paperwork he had researched the best litter, food, toys, etc. we should have for them. The problem was then finding a place in CC where we could pick up said items without overpaying for them. There's a Doggie Style a block away from us, but they have a very limited cat section (I was surprised they had anything!). And after consulting Yelp for places, I found that Accent On Animals was probably my best choice - I just didn't want to encounter the infamous rude owner, so I kept putting it off! Finally, I faced reality (out of cat food = BAD), so I went and now its the pet store I frequent. They carry the brands we use (World's Best Cat Litter, and EVO/Innova cat food), and thankfully their prices are relatively the same as what we can find online so I don't feel ripped off when I walk out of there. They have an surprisingly large selection of brands and products, and cater to probably every kind of typical pet. By now, I've been there enough times to experience both owners, and while you can definitely sense their different personalities instantly, before even entering the store, I've never been treated 'badly' by either in any way; one just SMILES and says hi when I enter, the other is, well, more reserved I guess. read more

Regarding the two ladies that work there or own it, one is really nice. The other is super cranky and not very friendly. Cross your fingers and hope you get the nice one (btw--you can tell which is which just by looking at them. go with the one that smiles). The place is super cramped, but has lots of stuff--except the stuff I really need (smaller cans of dog food). Why just the big cans, ladies? This claustrophobic store on South Street is hard to miss, standing out among the Bong Shop Renaissance with its own version of gaudy. Inside, though cramped, houses an impressive selection of food, toys, and treats for your dog, cat, bird, small animal, or even a little something for the fish in your life. Is it more expensive than PetSmart? Of course. But the upcharge comes with extra service and convenience if you are carless like me. Plus, small business and all that. AOA is not my go-to, but I stop in here occasionally for cans of Wellness or TikiCat for my kitties, and sometimes just because every time I see a pet store I feel the need to buy them more toys (they don't have enough; they are very deprived). I've never left disappointed. My ONLY gripe is that the place closes at 6, making it pretty much impossible for me to stop over after work. read more

We parked right by Accent on Animals and my Honey wanted to go inside. Now usually I am the person who goes to different cities buying my Weimaraner treats or toys. He surprised me (once again) by speaking with the store keeper about good healthy treats for an older Weimaraner. She was really informative and helpful. I have a cat but I don't dress him in little outfits or feed him gourmet food in a can. He doesn't even have a jangly bell (he just hangs out like a lazy bastard in my apartment). But when I needed to by nail clippers or stuff to break up his hairballs Accent was convenient and not grossly overpriced. They have animal supplies to cater to the needs of dog-owners, bird-owners, fish-owners, etc. What I like is that it is a more down to earth store and not as ootsy-cutsie as some of the other pet 'boutiques.' read more

Yup... one rude lady and one nice one. The first lady told me they couldn't order the specialty low allergen cat food I needed. I stopped in for something else a couple of months later and the second lady told me that they actually COULD special order it. Hm. Anyway, as it turns out they now carry the brand I use (Natural Balance) so it's a non-issue. Good place to shop if you need food for your pet's special diet. I was able to get my hamster's bedding here about a year ago. They didn't carry a lot of it though, and I had to get it out of a back closet, but they did have it (and for a tad more than I usually had paid). The woman in here was very helpful; my boyfriend was asking her a question, and they went off talking about whatever it was that he had asked. Very neat looking on the outside, and this store has a good selection on the inside. Cons: Not very big, pretty basic stuff, and the prices are about the usual or a tad more. This is a place that i will never go into again. Today I went into this pet boutique to check it out for a possible location to bring the dog group I belong to. I walked into the store and my husband was outside taking pictures of this store. As I walked in using my walker, I got about 7-10 feet inside the store to look around. The cashier at the front of the store said, "excuse me you cannot bring that cart in here". I replied back that it was not a cart but a walker that I need to get around to keep from falling. She replied back after doing a huge sigh and in an exasperated voice, "well I guess you can go back with it." My reply was to turn around and leave. I met my husband at the door as he was walking in. I said, "We do not need to do business here." I explained to him while we were walking away about the cashier tone of voice, and then all the sudden when we are about 20 feet down the street. She is standing at the door yelling at us, "I said you could take your walker in the store I turned around and told her.""Ma'am I do not like your attitude and you have lost me and about 20 other customers I would of been bringing to this store later on." While she is still yelling we turned around to walk away, and she is then yelling, "I told you that you can come back in if you want." Well to be honest I chose not to go back to that store and I will tell all my dog friends to avoid that store also. I am going to be hosting a dog event in June 2010 and was looking for cool places to bring the group. It would of been about 20 members, and they lost business because of this rude cashier. Less expensive than Doggie Style, more expensive than Petsmart, but a happy medium in convenience and cost when I need a few odds and ends for Harvey. The store is a little difficult to maneuver given all the products that they have packed into their little space, but they have everything I could need on the fly from food to toys, treats to accessories for the pooch. What makes this place pretty awesome is that carry pet products for fish, birds, and little rodents...not that I have any of the above, but it's good to know that it's there. This store actually follows credit card law and has no minimum so if I'm low on cash and need a quick item or two for the pup there's no need to wander around looking for the nearest ATM. The staff is friendly, the products are plentiful, and I am thrilled to have them in my new neighborhood. read more

This store not only caters to cats and dogs; they also cater to birds, rodents, and any other animal you can imagine keeping as a pet. Even the staff at Pet Snobs is quick to send customers to this store in the event that they are looking for something Pet Snobs does not carry (i.e.: when I asked the staff at Pet Snobs if they carried litterbox liners, they said I'd be able to find them at Accent on Animals, and surely enough I found them there!). While I'm fairly new to this whole cat thing and I don't live near any of the major pet supply store chains, chances are I will find myself here in the not too distant future if I need to find some new food, toys, or other supplies for my beloved cat Beaker. read more

I used to stop in here when I lived in South Philly because they carry all the good/healthy brands of cat & dog food for my boys. They also have a lot of toys and supplies. I bought my dog's crate here and it was cheaper than at the big chain stores. The only gripe I have is that sometimes they run out of my dog or cat food. I know it is hard to predict business and ordering but my dog has very sensitive food allergies and can only eat a few brands of food. Overall, the prices are reasonable and it's a great store, especially with their new(ish) mural on the outside. And the little black store cat is adorable. read more

This place is close to my house so I've been in a time or two. It's TINY. Like, seriously small. I've never experienced the mean lady who works here. Every time I've been in whoever was behind the counter has been helpful. Last time the woman's dog was there, Cookie, who was an insanely well behaved, sweet dog. AOA doesn't carry my dog food (Wellness Core adult formula but they do carry other Wellness products) so I don't buy food here. I've gotten bully sticks and toys mostly and the occasional can of wet food. It's really pretty expensive but I guess that comes with the location. read more

I got tricked into buying deworm medicine, when it was the wrong kind and I got bad advice. Afterwards they oversold me with these lousy pill pockets that don't work. My one cat chewed into the pill pocket and spit the pill out and the other cat won't even touch it. So I wasted like 18$ and change for nothing! read more

I had to get the dog a souvenior from Philadelpha. I was hoping they had some kind of "cheesesteak" flavored novelties, but no luck. They did, however, have the BIGGEST freaking bone I've ever seen that wasnt a leg. It was like a shoulder blade or something. It brought it back in June and she still has a some of it to chomp on. They also had Merrick flavors I've never seen out here in CA. Great selection of everything. read more

I really like their dog food selection and dog toys. I've been coming here for a year for my pup because you can't get the kinds of dog food they carry at box stores. And I like to support local business. I agree with the other reviews - there is a nice lady and a crabby one (and you can tell the difference). But either person, the visits are always quick and without problems. The store is soooo tiny and cramped, but if you look around enough you'll find what you're looking for (for dogs anyway). read more

I am very obsessed with my dog, don't get me wrong. But I don't think he needs a plush "PAWDA" bag or other elaborately decorated accessories which he will destroy immediately. That's why I love this store and I am glad it is the closest pet store. It's simple and stocked with all the basics I need and none of the extra fancy crap. Brought my dog in on st Patrick's day to get him another holt collar. Lady sold me 2 sizes too big and I didn't realize that it was too large until I got home and opened the package and I lost my receipt (my fault) however they led me to believe they would help me out. Went in there again and they didn't receive his size the guy sees that I cut the package open to try it on thinking it would fit because the lady had met my dog and TOLD me it would fit. Its been a month now so I go back in there to try and exchange it for a gentle leader which costs more money so I was willing to pay the difference. Go back in there and they are telling me I'm stuck with it since I cut the package open and they can't resell it. You would think they would want to keep a loyal returning customer and take the lose. However now I'm stuck with something that's 2 sizes too big because the lady who had met my dog sold it to me. Will not be shopping there ever again. And I would advise you to go to a store that actually appreciates their customers. read more

I've only ever gotten the infamous grumpy lady. I can forgive people for being grumpy. However, there's a huge difference between 'grumpy' and 'bullying' and 'bad service'. I went in for some stuff for my cat (a new flea collar, treats, etc. random assortment) and asked if they carried a specific brand of larvae and egg drops. These aren't the same as flea drops - flea drops are usually around $20 and larvae and egg drops are usually around $8. She said they didn't carry the brand, grabbed some off brand from a shelf behind her, said they were the same thing, and rung me up for them without asking me if i wanted them or even giving me a chance to speak. I wanted an $8 product and she rang me for something that cost $18.99. When I told her that wasn't what I needed she gave me a look that could pop popcorn and stared at me unblinkingly for a moment, as though I were being an irresponsible pet owner and endangering my pet's welfare for not buying the stupid unknown brand of a product I didn't need. I did let her talk me into buying a similar off-brand flea collar that shed white powder everywhere, smelled like poison, and didn't protect my cat. I ended up throwing it away after 2 months, buying stuff from CVS, and my cat is now flea-free. read more

Went here looking for tapeworm pills for our cats, and were delighted to discover that AOAs prices were cheaper than petsmart. We ended up wandering the aisles for a long long time, and the kind woman working there offered help but gave us space to explore. They have tons of treats and toys and treatments for cats, unlike other places (like doggie style) that have super limited cat supply. Also the woman working there was knowledgeable and gave us advice about how to get the cats to take the pills and where tapeworm comes from and so on. Great spot to shop, only wish I wasn't so poor so we could spoil our kitties w/ all the toys in the shop. Ah well, the prices are all fair and I will definitely be back. read more
