I used to be a loyal customer until my most recent experience with rittenhouse pet supply. I purchased a comfort zone pheromone technology kit. Kit came with 1 diffuser and 1 refill for $40. The box was already open when she sold it to me - I trusted that it was still in brand new condition. I try to buy local when I can, in this case I could get 3 diffusers and 5 refills online for $55. I went to return the kit (within 24 hours) and the staff refused to accept my return because the box was open. She then proceeded to call me cheap because I was returning it. They lost both mine and my boyfriends business from this. I'll save money buying online - rittenhouse pet supply is way overpriced anyway. read more

Great selection of holistic/ healthy pet food. Friendly, helpful staff. They will order something for you if they don't have it. Free samples by the door. They literally saved my cat's life once. He had fatty liver disease and would not eat much or anything at all. I tried all kinds of food; wet, dry, natural, usual mainstream crappy stuff. Got a dry food from here called California Naturals; he stared to eat it & his liver regenerated itself. He lived a few more years(9 lives right?) until he got pancreatic cancer. read more

When I walked into this store I was taken aback by the smell of cat urine , but it was the attitude of the girl working there is what inspired me to write this review. I mentioned that the smell was intense and that as a I have asthma that couldn't stay, but as I needed to shop I turned back and said that I would be fast because of the odor. I was SHOCKED when the girl said, and in a very terse tone, " STOP TALKING ABOUT THE SMELL !!! " I am a senior and I have NEVER been treated so rudely !!! I responded that I own 3 very similar pet product shops in Nashville Tn, and that the reputation of a shop is only as good as the people work with the clients ... Her response ?? "It's a good thing that I do not work an ENTITLED B#itch LIKE YOU!!" Wow ... To treat ANYONE, let alone someone with a medical issue like that is UNBELIEVABLE . I feel badly for the owner of this shop as it is tidy and well stocked with high end products, but without employees to to interact to promote sales and to receive feedback to improve the customers experience, her store will never have the reputation that it truly deserves. My Guinea pig, Snickers has enjoyed many adorable toys, treats and other supplies from this cute pet shop. I used to order the Carefresh bedding and hay every week, the $5 delivery to local addresses is a huge perk for someone like myself who lives nearby and doesn't want to head home with a bunch of heavy items. I really do like the staff for the most part. There are a few instances where I feel that the customer service could have been better, where they were a little short with me, and there was an issue with one of the products, but they have gone the extra mile to order lots of items which they can get from a supplier and usually get them in soon, will even call me within a few days to let me know when it has arrived which is really helpful. I have to say that I will always be grateful to Tina and Missy - about 2-3 years ago, lots of doctors were urging me to get rid of Snickers, I nearly had a nervous breakdown in their pet shop, very upset and distraught. They couldn't have been more kind and understanding, even went to the effort to help me find Snickers a new home, but fortunately I had a change of heart and so that wasn't necessary. I really appreciated the moral support on some sad, discouraged days thinking of having to part with my beloved pet, they made things much easier for me. I'm also very appreciative that on Snickers 3rd Birthday, they gave us 3 free toys and a hand-written card in an adorable gift bag. That was so sweet and really warmed my heart. It's little things like that that make you know you and your business are appreciated. I'd like to continue to patronize this adorable shop, however I've found that some items are a bit expensive so I don't get things there as often as I would like to, but I think that they have a great selection of items for all sorts of animals- small animals, dogs, cats, and I've heard they even have fish food too which is great because I recently adopted a Betta Fish, Midnight. Glad they're in town! Happy to support this local biz! Monty gives the store some flair, he's a pretty kitty, and has quite the personality! This is the worst customer service pet store. I adopted a dog in Oct 2018. I brought my new dog in one night around 7 pm, looking for a harness. The sales person was rude acting like she could care less but directed me where the harness were. . When I tried on the "PUPPIA" harness on my dog she thought it would be fine. So I purchased it ( it was not cheap). My dog weighs 15 pds. When I got home my dog was whimpering and my son and friend checked the sizing and it was way too tight at the buckle. When I tried to loosen it wasn't adjustable. I called the store but there wasn't an answer. I went to return it for the next day for the next size @10:00 am. When I walked in with my receipt and dog, another clerk barely looked up ( no one else was in the store again). I explained the situation and was told very abruptly there were no returns PERIOD. IT WAS NOT EVEN 24 hours and all I wanted was to exchange the item. Could I please speak to the owner. The clerk ordered me out of the store. I stopped in a few days later looking for the owner who wasn't in. I explained the situations that occurred, the clerk took my name and number to give to the owner. Guess what , NO RESPONSE. I tried again a few weeks later and Never heard from the owner or a manager. I alway try to shop local to support the small mom and pop stores. Now I know why big stores and Amazon do well. They train their employees and they know every happy customer will come back at even a better price. Don't shop here, there are better place in the city read more

Look, I like this place, but today they really triggered one of my pet peeves which is - no voicemail or recording or public posting to indicate when they're open and closed. Nothing effing sets me off like calling a place and just getting a riiiing riiiiing riiiing. It tells me nothing: are they open today? If so, when? Should I just plan on going somewhere else? To me, if a store can't be bothered to setup a voicemail greeting filling you in on important details like hours of operation, it means they don't give a flying F about you as a customer. And I hate that. That being said, despite the fact that I have often found the staff here to be really creepy and strange-acting, they are one of the few places that carries the PROPER types of food for guinea pigs. So it seems I don't have a lot of options about where else to go. read more

This place is on my street, which is uber convenient when I realize on my walk home that the piggehs need food. Their small pet supplies and food are minimal, but they're at least existent...I've had a hard time finding small pet supplies in the city. They carry good quality options, though I would opt for different food most of the time. I just want the plain guinea pig pellet food!! They don't like the seeds and whistles. I absolutely love this business. It's in a great location in Rittenhouse and the store is PACKED full of things that you need and want for your furry friends. I come here because they sell the science diet kitten food that my fosters generally love and it's comparably priced to larger pet stores. I absolutely always leave with some new toy or treat for my kittens. The staff is awesome and they support the local animal shelters through their adoption window which is great. Like a heat seeking missile my dog always finds his way to Rittenhouse Pets for premium treats, food, and the occasional toy. The owner and her staff are incredibly kind and accommodating. Don't see what you need on the shelves? Place an order by Tuesday and they'll have it in store for pickup on Wednesday. Can't make it to the store during regular business hours? They deliver to most of the city (if you live above Snyder and below Girard you're most likely within range). It's a city dweller without a car's dream shop. With quality products like Zuke's, Wellness, and Solid Gold this is a small business that I'm happy to stand behind. read more

I love this place. It's tiny and a little dingy and crowded but the staff are so friendly - and they have a window full of kittens. The owner is an incredible, incredible business owner and person. She has always remembered me, from the very first time I came to her store. Over the summer when I was on crutches, she not only carried my cat food and litter to my apartment building - she walked my things all the way up to my third-floor apartment. They manage to fit a ton of inventory into a tiny store, and they are always willing to order things if they don't have what you want in stock. If you can't find what you're looking for, or need recommendations, just ask - the staff are some of the most consistently helpful of any retail place in the city. I do love the kitties in the window. I've heard that some have health problems, and the staff have sometimes let me know to be careful with a particular kitten when I've asked about holding them. But most of the time, I love having the chance to snuggle a teeny tiny snuggly kitty-face as part of my shopping routine. They've renovated the front window so now they have a big, multi-tiered play area instead of their older and smaller cage. More room for cuteness is always a win! read more

This pet supply changed owners about a year ago and while this store was good it only got great...er! Yes it's a small place that might feel stuffy yet it is always clean and doesn't have any odors besides from the cats but as an owner of two cats (or the ownee of two cats) it doesn't bother me at all. They don't cater to the exotic animal population but they have an amazing variety of cat and dog supplies. They will deliver your purchases for a flat rate of $5 and are always a delight to converse with. A special explanation is needed when it comes to the kittens in the window. The kittens are brought there by Cindy and she is actually the one in charge of the adopting procedure. You could say that the owners of the store just house the cats for show and don't really know where they come from. Usually the cats are young, kitten young and they get adopted faster than a fat man eats a twinky. I have never adopted from them but I have a friend who is a crazy cat guy and he has adopted four cats from this place with one of them having some respiratory problems, nothing worth mentioning so I would say that the process is ok. In any case, just the fact that they are getting adopted so fast is good because every cat adopted is a cat saved. read more

Forget Doggie Style, THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO if you want a wide variety of dog treats and FRESH dog food! My dog literally PULLS me there every day!!! First of all, the owner, Wendy, is absolutely amazing! Anytime I need any product --- even if she doesn't carry the brand -- she will special order it for me (and any other customer!) The other staffers (ie: Missy) are sooo sweet and open NEW treat bags in order to give treats to my little dog! They are the sweetest people, and for the customer service alone, I give them 5 stars. Secondly, the food at Rittenhouse Pet is SOOO much fresher than any other dog store! I made the huge mistake of going to Doggie Style to pick up my dog's food bc it was on my way home... Doggie Style's food was OLD and looked like it was stocked a year prior. I immediately went to Rittenhouse Square to pick up the usual food and my dog definitely noticed! Finally, in this economy, if you want to save money (I'm a student!), you want to get the best bang for your buck! This place has the best prices in the philly... believe me, I saved SO much by going to this store...no more paying $5-6 for a darn bully stick! Plus, these guys DELIVER!!! So convenient! I figured it was from foreign particles and not an infection (due to some extensive website research), and Vetericyn seemed to be what I was looking for. I just got a kitty and have been into RSP twice for supplies. I met Wendy on my second visit and she is super helpful and personable. She gave me great advice on cat toys (I can't explain the adorableness of a cat chasing a laser. So glad I got it.). She seemed to know everyone who came in, and their pet, and she threw in a couple mice toys with the carrier I got so my kitty would associate it with something fun. My cat loved the mice, and was curled up in the carrier in no time. It is a small shop so they don't have everything under the sun like Petco or another big chain, and it's a bit haphazardly laid out, but that only adds to the laid back vibe. Doggie Style has more selection of certain items and is super organized, but there's something too... sanitized about the place. Plus, I love that Wendy's dog hangs out at RSP and that there are rescue kitties in the window. I will definitely come here for all my cat needs. Locally owned, decently priced and convenient, with a friendly/knowledgeable staff - can't beat that. read more

I can't say enough positive things about this place. Wendy - I believe she's the owner - is incredibly helpful. My Brady is 5 months old, and he's my first kitten, so I always have questions about types of litter, toys, the best kitten food, etc. Her suggestions (Da Bird toy, for example) have been right on the mark every time. She always remembers me too, and inquires about my kitty. I know some items are on the expensive side, but the Swheat Scoop litter is the same price as it is at the PetSmart on Oregon Avenue and the EVO cat food I buy is $6 for two weeks' worth. Not bad at all. Everyone else who works there (that I've met thus far, anyway) is also friendly and helpful. My dog has been in love with this down to earth store since he was a puppy. He pulls for a few blocks to get there then beelines it to the counter to say hi to the lovely staff and get a treat. ( Even if he declines the treat, he very much enjoys being greeted like the prince he is.) They always have interesting food alternatives that fulfill all of my dog food criteria. I could read the bags all day and still wouldn't find any that I'd reject due to health concerns. They also have American made chews and dried meat things which were extremely difficult to find for a while. read more

I love this pet store. Reasons include: -The staff is so helpful. They will order a product if you're looking for it and they don't have it in stock, and take your number and call you when they get it in. Awesome. -They carry cat toys that are awesome - cat toys are cat toys, right? Not really. We rescued a 5 month old feral kitten who was really difficult to socialize and I went in looking for something to help. I'd read that wand/dangling toys were good for breaking a feral. They had this tiny mouse on a wire toy that I've never been able to find anywhere else and it was literally the thing that made her come around to us. She's gone through 2 because she plays with them so hard, and like I said, I've never seen them at a petsmart or any other pet store. Best $7 I've spent on her. -They have soooo much food. So many kinds. So much organic and natural and grain free, it's crazy. -They're compassionate and helpful - yesterday my older cat had a terrible stomach virus (or food poisoning?) which can be scary for a kitty. After a day of not eating and lots of throwing up, I needed to feed him something that was easy on his stomach but had some nutrition to get him back to normal. The girl who was there at the time led me to some natural all chicken and brown rice canned food and suggested I dilute just a little of it with water, making a kind of soup. He lapped up the broth happily, and is doing much better. I love that it's a local store, privately owned, and that my money is going to that kind of establishment and not a big chain. That's tough to do sometimes, because neighborhood specialty shops can be really pricey. But I find the prices here reasonable and the service is awesome. read more

Since my last review, I've become a resident of the neighborhood and a regular customer. Also since my last review, the owners have changed and the resident cat has changed. What's better: - There are adorable kittens in the window that I can make goofy noises at while they do what cats do best, which is ignore me. - The store is well stocked all of the time, so there's never a wait to pick up food. - They deliver! No seriously. It's a flat $5 delivery fee. What's the same: - Friendly staff who will actually talk to you about what you need/want. I was convinced to spend the extra money on a Furminator, and it changed my life. - Stuff is still pricey, hence four stars instead of five. Just started fostering an adorable cat through the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society. PAWS set us up with the basics, but as little Stewie got over his cold, he was ready to play, so I stopped by Rittenhouse Pet Supply to pick up a toy and some more food. PAWS recommended we only feed Stewie high-quality foods--none of that corn-meal Purina crap for our little prince--and Rittenhouse delivered. Unfortunately, Stewie hasn't been so pleased with the healthy/organic/looks-like-grass-balls treats I got (what was I thinking?). But RPS is just a few blocks from us, so I'll see what else I can find. (Gotta have something to encourage good behavior.) And he loves his new catnip mouse toy. The store is quite crowded, and their dish supply was kind of meager and poorly displayed, and I hate that they don't have price tags on lots of their items. But they keep kittens for adoption in the window, so that earns them back a star. read more

Both of the women who work there are incredibly rude. I adopted a kitten from there several months ago and they have been unhelpful and condescending. There were two kittens in the window and I was looking to adopt another one and I asked if I could pet one of them and the cashier said "How about we just keep it closed?" I asked if they had been adopted and she said yes. She could have just said that instead of being rude. I will no longer be buying any of my cat food there. I went there in the morning when they just opened and she acted like she was running an entire department store and said "We just opened you're going to have to give me a couple minutes" Oh I'm sorry I didn't realize it took 20 minutes to open a store the size of a bathroom. read more

Just stopped in to get a gift for a friend's cat and the woman working there now is the rudest and most condescending salesperson I've ever encountered. I love this place. I went in here today to get my puppy, Bubba, a new jacket & those rubber shoes called "PawZ" & the lady at the counter (i forgot to get her name. So sorry!) was soooo helpful. She helped me measure his paw & also pick out the right size jacket for him. While I struggled to put on his new slippers, she distracted him with so many treats. I was visiting Philadelphia for a long weekend and my husband and I had decided to not travel with our two dogs. We always like to buy them something when we are away so we googled nearby pet stores. It's a tiny space filled floor to ceiling with pet items. The first room was mostly dog/cat treats, toys and some apparel. The second room was food items. I actually enjoyed the saleswoman working. She was an older woman that greeted us and told us to let her know if she had any questions. She warned us about the orange cat and the massive amount of catnip it had just consumed. She said it was on a catnip high and may or may not be friendly. I thought it was kind of funny and it didn't bother us at all. The prices were reasonable. I know I can get my pet items online for cheaper but I like to support small businesses when I can. Small businesses offer a more personal experience and it's nice to chat with other people who also like to spoil their pets! We got some local treats for our dogs and some rubber booties. We enjoyed our quick visit and would come back on our next visit. If you're like us and need a quick little something to bring back to your furry friend stop in! read more

I was reading some of the review about Rittenhouse Square Pet Supply, and I think I must have walked into a completely different store. Or perhaps all of the nice staff was off that day. I came in after searching online for a low fat, high fiber cat food, and on the website, they said that Rittenhouse carried it. When I walked in, I was greeted by no one. The person behind the counter was engaged in her own conversation, and didn't seem to notice me or anyone else. The store is really small, but I was having a difficult time finding the cat food I wanted. So, I went up to the counter, and again, I got nothing. In fact, she just looks at me, like I was bothering or interrupting her. I don't even get a hi or can I help you. So, I ask her if they carry this cat food, and she shows it to me as if I should already know what where it is. Since I had a starving kitty at home, I bought the food, and the whole time I was being rung up, she seemed to have a bad attitude. She didn't even ask if I wanted a bag. I left the store, went online, and found another store that carries that food. And I will be going there from now on. Having worked in retail for most of my life, I understand the stresses that it brings. However, I am not expecting the person behind the counter to be my best friend, but common courtesy is important to me. And I didn't feel like I got that on my trip to Rittenhouse Square Pet Supply. read more

I went there today because I read they don't carry any small animals and it's dangerous to go directly home to my rats after being in a pet store. The lady was super friendly, and so were her dogs who were hanging out. It's got a really good selection of premium food for dogs and cats but if you have small animals or birds I would go somewhere else the food selection was terrible and accessories were non-existent. There wasn't even much of a selection of litters, which was surprising, luckily they did have one I can use for my boys at home. read more

The women who answered the phone literally answered saying "hello" and that is all that I literally had to ask if I actually had called Rittenhouse Pet Store. After she replied "yes", she said "what do you want"?
