Maybe it was just the day or...I dunno. I stopped by Baltimore Pet Shop to pick up some last minute things for my fur baby's birthday (yeah I'm that dog parent and so what lol). When I walked in I was greeted by no one and I'm pretty sure staff saw me because the store is small as all get out. It's a personal thing. I digress. They had a lot of options for all kinds of pet babies and it was almost like a little corner store for all of your pet needs. I did pick up a few things for my little one but I could stand for some more affordable items and more variety. Will I go back? Not go out of my way to get there but if I needed anything I'd check them out again. read more

I enjoy Baltimore Pet Shoppe primarily as a place to pick up some toys and treats for my 3 pets. Staff is friendly and helpful in locating items when needed, too! Living just a few blocks away, I pass the store window frequently, and always love seeing the adoptable cats hanging out in the window. The store offers a nice selection of natural pet food options, though they don't seem to carry the more economical/basic brands. I would love to regularly my buy pet's food here if they did! read more

I really like this place. The two girls obviously love animals. It's really not that terribly priced. A giant bag of Wellness dog food was $56. That's exactly what I paid at PetsMart when it was ON SALE, previously $61.00. I think everything is fairly priced -- I mean they're running a business! And I'm all for supporting local businesses. The shelves are stocked with high-quality, all-natural pet foods, and their prices are competitive with big box stores and online retailers. The toy section is also diverse and features many unique, hand-crafted items. Another highlight is the rescue cats available for adoption in the window. Most of which are from Project MEOW - a local rescue that takes stray and feral cats off the streets of West Philadelphia and puts them into forever homes. I love Baltimore pet shoppe, especially for small supplies you may need, especially toys and treats! They have a good selection of cat food and dog food. The prices are sometimes a little expensive but that's understandable for being a local pet shop instead of a big chain pet store. I go here and support them as much as I can. The cashiers and workers are always knowledgeable and willing to help. It's conveniently located right on Baltimore Ave and generally you can find parking if need be. They also have the highest quality food available as well as cheaper low end food if needed. They also have supplies for neonatal kittens, which has come in handy for myself as a foster parent. I often get something different for my cats when I'm there, but honestly it get's five stars because they have toys available so you can to play with the adoptable cats in the window. read more

Somehow, this avowed cat hater became the proud owner of the cutest little ball of fluff around. Though I always made fun of people who pretend their animals are children, I have to admit that my little Lola Mae is spoiled. Spoiled rotten. It's great to have a local pet store where I can pop by and purchase gourmet organic cat food, stimulating pet toys, cute collars, and the dried bonito chips that Lola craves. And Sharon (and her little dog Shadow) have been neighborhood staples for years. They are the best! We've been going to this pet shop for almost 3 years to get all our rabbit supplies - bulk hay, pellets, and bedding. I've had a good impression of the store and its employees - good communication, good prices, etc. However, after our rabbit crossed the bunny rainbow, we were left with a lot of supplies. The opened supplies I plan to donate to a rabbit shelter. The unopened (2 bags of Carefresh bedding ~$35) supplies I tried to return to Baltimore Pet Shop - these were purchased only around a month ago. We called and the employee said they would speak to the manager; then we received a call back saying the manager responded "returns with receipts only; if no receipt then store credit only" after being told our rabbit's situation. If this is their heartless way of doing business, then this is not a business anyone should support. Common sense: what would I do with store credit if my companion is gone? I've spent hundreds of dollars here and have recommended it to friends; however, I hope that this negative review is read by others thinking of shopping here b/c it sheds light on their unfortunate management style. read more

I adore this place. My 8 wk old puppy threatened to pee on their rug and everyone was totally cool with it. I'm a new pet owner with a trillion questions that someone is always willing to answer with personal anecdotes and GREAT suggestions for websites, trainers, books etc... Yesterday I went in to find my puppy some more enticing treats (the ones we have now aren't quite irresistible enough for training). I was completely ready to bite the bullet and pay for puppy snacks that my puppy may hate. I was informed, however, that if my puppy does, in fact, hate them that I can BRING THEM BACK! What? Word? Yes! My puppy loves the treats but with a policy like that I wouldn't even bother taking them back if she didn't. I enjoy supporting fantastic businesses. The only other option I know of in the area for pet needs is MonsterPets (which sucks, btw). I choose Baltimore Pet Shoppe! read more

I love that there is now a place in my neighborhood that sells food I don't feel bad about buying for or feeding to my dog. They have a great selection of kibble, canned food, treats, pet supplies, and toys for both dogs and cats. The staff is nice and helpful but not pushy. I love The Baltimore Pet Shoppe! This is a responsible pet store. They carry eco-friendly toys and extras without being over priced like so many other pet "boutiques." With a helpful staff, they stock a decent selection of pet foods; not that stuff made of meat byproducts either! My dog has allergies and here I can find the grain-free foods she thrives on, as well as supplements for her skin and coat. Why even go to a vet when you have the girl who workS at the Baltimore Pet Shoppe! Every time I go there she is so nice and knowledgeable. I was freaked out because my cat has worms and I didn't know what to do. She gave me medicine on the spot! I wasn't expecting her to know about cat ailments. Give this woman a raise! I don't get my basic cat needs here (litter, food) but anytime I need something special, their prices are competitive and their products are high quality. Also. Alright, I don't currently have a pet (although I am looking to change that soon). But I still love stopping by Baltimore Pet Shoppe for a lot of reasons. First off, my mother owns a Rott. Do you know how hard it is to find toys she won't destroy in two minutes? But for such a small storefront, this place does a great job of keeping a lot of options in stock. It might be a little more pricey than going to Big Box Pets 'R' Us somewhere, but totally worth it. The toy-detroyer is getting one of those giant Kongs next time I visit. And the second I do get my little ball of fluff, they're getting one of those Phillies collars I've been eyeing for months. Second, they do great work with City Kitties to find homes for neighborhood cats. Kitties in their window get adopted fast and into great homes and get treated very well while they're there, which I've got to support. Third, I can get my fur fix. The in-house cat, Molly, is a giant dose of give-me-love and every time I've gone in they've been visited by some of the nicest dogs (and owners) you can imagine. Sitting on the floor with an arthritic but happy shepherd while she makes friends with a chihuahua and an overweight cat rubs against me = heaven. And the staff is really nice about the fact that I'm pretty obviously going in there just because I need some animal time. Actually, the staff is nice about everything. So cheers to Baltimore Pet Shoppe and, once I do adopt one of your window cats, expect to see a lot more of me. read more

West Philly tends to be a place renowned for living cheaply. With a variety of reasonably priced ethnic food (Abyssinia, Vientienne, Fu-Wah hoagies, Saad's, among many others) and affordable housing and low-budget entertainment (such as Studio 34 and Clark Park events) West Philly offers many wallet-friendly options. There are, however, certain ways in which we will bend towards bougieness, the first being money we're willing to spend on local and organic food, and the second being money for our pets. So thank god the Baltimore Pet Shoppe finally opened! I'm actually amazed that it took so damn long for someone to realize the potential of this totally untapped market. My husband and I had been going to center city or NoLibs for Innova (bougie to the max) dog food and can now get it down the street. The store is very much like the other pet shops in the city (Doggie Style, Chic Petique, etc..) in terms of their inventory. The sales staff was extremely helpful in picking out a toy for my incessantly burrowing dog (a plush "tissue box" with bone shaped squeaky toys that can be re-stuffed and rediscovered until kingdom come). I should say that if you're interested in pet clothes you should look elsewhere, but that I'm personally not distressed by their absence. I'm not proud that I dress my dachshund in argyle and don't need anyone to fuel my sick habit. Baltimore Pet Shoppe is a most welcome addition to the neighborhood. Everyone from West Philly please come out and support it so we officially have no more reasons to shop in center city! read more

The neighborhood needed a decent pet store soooo badly and Baltimore Pet Shoppe fits the bill nicely. They have a great selection of dog and cat foods, from high-end boutique organic brands to high-quality but less expensive major brands. They also have a great selection of small pet supplies (guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, etc). The toys and other accessories they carry are great too. All that in this small shop and the prices are better than most pet stores in the city. And if it's possible that you can't find Fido's favorite food, they will gladly order it for you. read more

They stock a great variety of grain-free wet and dry food that my cats love, not to mention catnip, cat toys, and cat milk [Not Made With Actual Cat Milk]. Great addition to the neighborhood. No pet bargains to be found here, but why would you skimp on your cats?? What are you, a cat hater? Be gone! I asked advice about my cat's constant vomiting issues, was given a few different options and ideas (with no sales pressure and genuine concern). A month later, with the Dick Van Patten stuff and some kitty probiotic powder in his regular regime and no more daily kitty vomiting. Of course - if your pet is in distress, take it to a vet first to make sure it doesn't have kitty liver disease or doggy diabetes. But Baltimore Pet Shoppe has a great selection of the "a little more expensive than Purina but worth it" foods. And for small business, I feel like their prices are as competitive as they could be. Big ups for keeping the front window display available for pets that need to be adopted - so cute to see new kitties or guinea pigs in there every few weeks! read more

This pet store is conveniently located within walking distance of my apartment. When I first adopted my puppy I went here to purchase a crate and other small things. The young lady at the cashier was very friendly and knowledgable. She gave me some tips and suggestions on what to buy for my new puppy. She even gave me a sample of some dried lamb for my puppy to try (which he loved)! It is a great alternative to bigger commercial stores like Petco and PetSmart. It is smaller and has more organic and quality food, snacks, etc for your pets. It is my new favorite pet store! read more

I don't find this pet store to be more particularly well stocked than any other of the small indie ones in the Philadelphia area. It falls right into the 'just fine' territory as I'm concerned. We all know the reality is you can get everything they have via the internet these days, for much cheaper, but we like to support locally owned businesses so...there it is. As for the staff. I have found them to be polite/cordial, but with a standoffish air I could do without. I wouldn't normally say something like this, but... notice that 90% of the reviews for this business are by women? I don't think that's a coincidence. I'll leave it at that. read more

We've been going here since we got our first cat, about 6 months ago, and it's always been a pleasant experience. The staff are very helpful and friendly, without being overbearing. They have a good selection of pet supplies for such a small store, and they always have whatever we need. The prices are also better than expected. Some of their items are even significantly cheaper than amazon, such as their litter boxes and cat toys. Be warned that they sell only higher quality pet food, but it will probably pay for itself in the long run by producing a happier, healthier cat. This is a small but well-stocked store focusing on dogs and cats (they don't have much for other pets). They have a good selection of high quality dog and cat foods, including dry, canned, and raw. They also have some really fun and interesting toys. My favorite thing about the store is that they have a very friendly staff who genuinely love animals. They also always feature adoptable cats from local rescue Project MEOW, which is a terrific West Philly organization. Prices are a little high, though. I'd love to support a local business and do all of my shopping here, but I am on a tight budget and often buy my pet food in bulk online. Awesome neighborhood store. Good selection of high-quality items that are actually priced better than the big chains (if you're comparing the same level of products). If they don't have an item you need, they'll order it for you free of any additional charge. The staff is actually knowledgable about the products and have suggestions even if it is something they don't carry. I like that all of the animals that they have up for adoption (most of the time only cats - occasionally adoption events for other animals) are from local rescues. All of the money from adoption goes straight to the rescue. It helps with the stray overpopulation that we struggle with in Philadelphia instead of a) supporting mistreatment at cheap puppy/kitten mills or b) importing more "marketable" breeds of rescue animals from other states at a high adoption fee markup as a guise to make a profit off of the "rescue business" (*ahem* like another local chain does. I'm giving them serious side-eye). Plus, the store cat, Molly, is a classy rotund lady -- so fabulous :3 read more

I'm a crazy cat lady. BPS is a wonderful place for people like me. I love them! They support local cat rescues by putting rescue kitties in their front window. They special order weird litter for my asthmatic kitty. They special order weird food (charging less than amazon when you consider shipping!) for my dog. They always have great product recommendations. I just got this cat toy that is one of those weebles-wobble-but-don't-fall-down, but that makes noise and lights up when my cats smack it. My cats adore it. If only my cats didn't play with it ALL NIGHT LONG. read more

Baltimore Pet Shoppe is a great little pet store. They carry a solid selection of high quality dog and cat foods, a fun selection of toys and will special order items that they do not regularly carry. One caveat: they are a small store and specialize in cat and dog supplies. If you're looking for food/equipment for exotics, this isn't the place to go. They support West Philly animal rescue groups by hosting kitties in their front window from Project M.E.O.W. and City Kitties. I've heard they've had some good luck finding homes for these needy kitties. While all of the above is great, what keeps me coming back is the staff. They're knowledgeable and super friendly. They'll listen to me talk about all my weird pet needs, and do their best to help. Can they recommend a cat litter that will allow me to check the color of my cat's pee because she recently had a bladder infection? You bet! What about food for my super itchy dog with allergies? They had a list of ideas. When I just want to tell stories about my spunky foster kitty and lazy old dogs, they'll listen to those as well. read more

Large dog breed owners must go to this store!! I've had such a difficult time finding any pet store that carries feminine harnesses or collars for my bullmastiff. My poor dog is always mistaken for a boy! I did not catch the cashier's name but she was so friendly and knowledgeable. Prices are very reasonable too! So glad I stopped in. I just found a new kitty and needed an extra litter box along with some toys and a few other things while I keep her and my other cat separated. First off as other reviewers have noted the place is small, but makes great use of the space provided. I found everything I needed and a few things I never knew existed. The woman who works there was extremely nice and helpful. The whole pet store has this very nice mom and pop feel to it. I ended up getting quite a bit of stuff for the new kitty as well as a few things for my cat I've had for a while. The prices seemed very fair and if I had a question or concern it was honestly and professionally answered.
