Have been a client at monster pets for almost 3 years. At the beginning of this year I was asked if I wanted to be a member to earn rewards for purchases. It took close to 10 months to earn a $25 reward,(a spend of $1,000). When I earned the reward the sales person neglected to tell me the receipt had a printed coupon on the bottom for the redeeming of $25.00. I came back 2 months later purchased $250.00 of supplies, aquarium plants and fish. When I asked to redeem the $25 I then found out the coupon was on a receipt I no longer had. The store has no computer information for history of purchases. The manager said sorry nothing I can do. I was not even offered a free guppies. Anyone who has fish will understand that would not be a hardship. My story get worse. I come home rinse off the plants i purchased to remove snails and bacteria. A week later my 39 gallon tank is invested with snails. I purchased a beta fish that was covered in ich. Can't be seen in the dark lighting at the store. Needless to say when a customer spends over $1,000 in less then a year at a pet store there should be better care and service. If you are a tropical fishkeeper, this is a great store. Their tanks are clean and well-kept, and they have a wide variety of healthy fish and plants. The employees in the fish department are more knowledgeable than I have seen at most other stores. The store also carries reptiles and small animals and sells products for dogs and cats and has a dog-wash area in the back. We have only bought fish, plants, and dog treats here, but every time has been a good experience, and we look forward to stopping in when we are in the city. read more

Had an unpleasant experience here recently. Bought a soft neck ring for my pug who's recovering from an eye injury. Was unsure of the size and store policy indicates no returns so before purchase I asked the clerk for clarification. I was informed that the policy was no returns (as posted) but that exchanges were allowed. Great, I thought. Got home and the pillow barely fit around my dog's neck at its absolute widest. Brought it back for an exchange and was told in no uncertain terms that they absolutely did not do exchanges and I had been misinformed. Left the collar with the store. Do not shop here. They sell faulty equipment !!!!! Spent $100 on a tank that included a filter and within 3 weeks my filter is no longer working. They have a 30 day return policy on unused items... how am I suppose to know the filter works without using it??? Called and asked for a replacement and they told me there's nothing they can do. I have had bad several experiences with this store which lead me to believe they don't treat their animals appropriately. #1 My ex got a parakeet here that died 4 days later despite being well cared for. #2 I bought two fancy rats here, both females. One of them turned out to be pregnant, and I had to figure out what to do with 8 baby rats. A good pet store would have better practices and keep the sexes apart before maturity, and at least recognize the signs that a rat is pregnant so that she is not sold to an unsuspecting customer. With no help from Monster Pets, I was able to find homes for all of the babies. #3 I decided to come back to purchase fancy rats on another occasion after not being able to find them by other means. I chose three females who were house together. That very night I noticed that one of the "females" had prominent testicles. Monster Pets again had not separated the sexes. I called the store about a return it exchange, and they were not helpful, saying they do not take animals back despite selling me the wrong animal. My other issue is that their pet supplies are outrageously marked up. I'm leaving two stars because the front store staff are nice and friendly. Last time I came here seeing the expensive prices labeled on the products, I hung my head and headed for the doors vowing never to return. There are so many other great pet stores like petco and petsmart with great prices one never needs to come to a place. Until you are desperate... I was looking for Syrian long hair teddy bear Hammies and all Google search tells me is to head to my local petsmart/petco. And I did to find that they were so popular they are all out. Absolutely horrible. Me and my best friend both have multiple fish tanks and have bought tons of fish from Monster. My boy had 2 fish out of 8 fish die the day he got them and when he brought them back they wouldn't replace it. The worst part is they tried to say his water was really bad when he tests his water all the time and all the other fish are extremely healthy. After that we went online and multiple people said they have gone there and the water tests have mysteriously been way off compared to the water they usually have. Looks like they are tampering with peoples water tests just so they don't have to replace them. They lost 2 customers that have spent 1000s of dollars there over replacing 40 dollars worth of fish. read more

Came here in search of puppy snacks. Monster Pet's looks like it closed down some sections of their store. The variety of products here are great. Pricey. Seems like they specialize in the fishes more so then other pets. Tons of puppy and cat stuff. They also have rodents, spiders and lizards sold here. Please don't shop here. The animals they sell are treated inhumanely and unethically. A large group of unfixed rabbits do not belong in a communal setting, and it's unconscionable that they're selling unfixed rabbits at all. A family member of mine recently adopted a rabbit that was purchased by a photographer from Monster Pets for Easter photo shoots (he was going to dump her at a "farm" after using her as a prop for about a month). She was underweight and clearly hadn't had proper diet or care. There is clearly a lot of ignorance and lack of regard for the welfare of all animals at this store. I came in here with the urge to add a small animal to our household, and even though I ended up not getting one, I spent a half hour asking questions and holding the different critters. I didn't get the employee's name, but the nicest guy explained to care required and personality types of all of the tiny fur balls in stock. Welcome to Monster Pets: racist, they hire children to look after exotics in poor conditions, and overprice their products compared to other stores. I have had THREE pets die from here. Three. We have excellent reviews from vets, take excellent care, but these people are mentally sick. You spend a dollar here? You're likely to buy an animal that's already sick or will die. Like mine did. One of my female rats turned out to be pregnant without warning. The rats are all kept in poor conditions as feeders too. The reptiles are ALL in the worse conditions possible. AVOID THIS PLACE. Animal rights groups will be coming through soon. Trust me. They're barely hanging on. You know it's bad when even the employees tell you that the manager lied about the cause of death of your baby pinky you let them nurse because the rat they sold you died giving birth too young. I have vet bills up up to debt. I can't wait for PETA to shut them and their shell companies down. I am traumatized from this place. Beware their NJ stores too. My organization is already branching out to investigate. If you want a reptile go to Jays Exotics or IllExotics. You'll see the difference. It's remarkable. They're true professionals. These people are inhuman. They treat their pets like $1 toys. If you've read the previous reviews, one person said their ex bought a bird that died 4 days later. That shows you. Reptiles need tropical environments based on their species. You won't find that here. What you find are sick animals suffering from the hands of the owners and don't trust the positive reviews. The owner probably has their own employees writing 5 star reviews. It's not uncommon. Don't be fooled be these people. Went here today for the first time and I LOVED it. The cashier was so nice. I bought my Staffy/pit mix a fresh baked cookie from their little bakery up front. They get them from a place in NJ and they may be partnering up with them soon i was told. Now, I can only speak to DOG ITEMS as i didn't walk further than that area. I wouldn't step foot in a reptile section anyway . They had great choices for natural, locally made treats and the regular stuff you see in larger chains. The larger chain items are the same price there and i was advised they do price match as long as u have the circular to show the price (on your phone is fine). Dog bones were quality made and well priced. Toys were great too. Not a gigantic selection BUT i managed to find one my girl won't destroy in 5 seconds and loves to play with. In my last review, I said I only go here because I don't know where else I can buy feeder mice in the city. In order to get the feeder mice, you have to go to the door in the back by the puppies. I went here on a Saturday morning (around 11am) and every single dog was passed out. I'd like to say that again. Every single dog was passed out to the point that not a single one had any interest in the crowds of people. And while they don't have the dogs standing on wire floors anymore, this means they need to walk the dogs more. As I waited for my mice, I saw a dog covered in its own feces. It was sleeping, covered in loose poo, because they didn't walk it in time, or clean it in time. Sad and gross. I asked the kid getting my mice not to poke the holes in the box. There's plenty of air for them to breath, and they will chew through the holes and get loose in my car, if the holes are poked out. He said, "Want me to tape it up?" I said yes. So after standing there and noticing the poo covered puppy, I get my mice (very nicely taped up- just the holes, mind you) and head up to the register. Here's what happened next. Register 1, male, the man taking my money: "Why are the holes taped up?" Me: Oh, cause they chew through the holes and get loose in the car". Register 2, female: "So you're OK if they suffocate before you get home?" Now, I wish we could use italics, because I cannot even begin to convey the nasty, snotty tone she used to speak to me. I actually found myself having to say, "Yes," and then having to justify my actions. But, mind you, the mice were in a cardboard box that was in no way airtight. And that's ignoring the fact that she was lecturing me on animal treatment when she works in a store where all of the dogs appear drugged and one, at that very moment, was covered in its own feces. I have not been this angry in a long time. I fully intend to write the company a letter. read more

This place makes me really uncomfortable. It seems obscene to spend $1000 on a purebred dog unless you actually own a kennel and raise show animals. Their animals are all kept in cramped cages, and no attempt seems to have been made to find out what is best for the animal (for instance, did you know pine bedding is bad for some rodents? they don't). If you want a designer dog from a puppy mill to be just another accessory for you, then I guess the high cost is worth it... Of course, you could go to a shelter and adopt a perfectly healthy, lovable mutt, but he might not match your Louis Vuitton dog carrier. Millions upon millions of healthy animals get killed in shelters every year. You can adopt almost any kind of animal, too, not just cats and dogs--you can get wonderful pet rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, and even snakes from rescues. As far as the rest of the store goes... the selection is merely adequate, and very spotty in some departments. The employees are utterly clueless, so it's not like you even get the service of a normal non-chain pet shop. If I can't find what I want at Petsmart and don't want to pay out the ass for one of the froofy boutiques in town, I just order online. What they carry is neither specialized nor cheap enough to make it worth the trip or my ethics. read more

I don't like any pet store chains period but this one is especially vile. Yes, I will admit I have been there a few times but here is how those times went: Visit one: encountered an employee who was afraid of and hated all animals so they put him with the fish. when we asked a question about an aquarium (because we were thinking of getting a turtle) he was completely unhelpful and i feared he was just as inbred as the animals they sell. Visit two: needed to get non clay cat litter for kitty cats and worker kept asking "what's that?" when we asked where we could find it (the location was not in plain sight so we obviously needed assistance). We wound up finding it ourselves and had to show the employee what the products was. Visit three: another customer had questions about what sort of toy would be good for his small dog but was concerned with dyes in some of the rope toys. he was also asking about treats for the same dog but the employee kept shrugging his shoulders saying "i dunno." my husband and i wound up helping the man, who was very grateful. we even directed him to some places closer to his home that would have what he was looking for. So why then do you ask was I going to monster pets to begins with? The answer is catnip! Lots and lots of catnip! And sometimes the other more favorable pets stores are all out. read more

I don't understand why this place has not been shut down... The husbandry for the animals that they are selling isn't acceptable. They have snakes in tanks with no hides and incorrect bedding, and the poor birds had zero enrichment (toys, different sized and textured perches, etc.), only one or two of the solid rod perches of the wrong diameter for the size of the bird, and the perch sole perch was COVERED in poop! It made so sad to see how they were caring for the animals. The employees were also a joke. Couldn't have been less interested in being there, no knowledge of the animals or husbandry of the animals they were selling, and no customer service- Just all around bad attitudes. I purchased a single-clip style harness here. Service was nonexistent, as expected at a big box store, but they had what I wanted. It wasn't until my second visit that I realized they sold puppies in the back! Yes, these dogs are from puppy mills. No responsible breeders would sell their dogs through a store. Puppies can't be fully socialized if they are housed in metal crates and separated from other dogs and people at such an early stage in their life. While the prices at Monster Pets are decent, I choose to pay a premium in city stores that are cruelty free. read more

This is a good place to buy large quantities of dog/cat food at really reasonable prices. They have brands in stock that can be kind of hard to find. This is a bad place to buy a little monster, but I did anyway. The dogs likely come from backyard breeders or puppy mills. I formed this impression after 1) staff could not answer any of the reasonable questions I had about the breeder or the background of the dog who is now ruining my life. Just kidding, I love him. and 2) visiting other pet stores that were proud to show off literature openly identifying their trusted breeders, animal bloodlines, and beyond basic health guarantees. Monster Pets guarantees nothing beyond the law, which I don't recall, but it's extremely minimal. Monster Pets also wouldn't tell me anything, which is because there was really nothing to tell. They know they're shady; they know I know they're shady; bottom line is: do you want this dog? I did, so I took a chance on him. Monster Pets also does not socialize the puppies. They claim to, but it just isn't true. My boy clearly did not learn how to play properly, how to greet respectfully, how to respect other dogs' boundaries - all things that puppies naturally learn over time by interacting with each other. When I got him, they sprayed him with perfume before handing him over, & it quickly wore off. It became immediately clear that he had not been bathed in way too long. Way too long. Poor guy also had an ear infection! Unsurprising. They did pay for the meds when I brought the vet records to the store to prove he had the infection at the time of purchase. If you are an emotional softie, AVOID going to see the puppies in the back at all. That's how I fell in love with Freddie Mercury & ended up being a dog slave. I feel terrible that I gave money to this company, but my guy was past prime age for getting picked. That plus his EXORBITANTLY high sticker price (which I bargained down) almost guaranteed that no one would take him. I'm glad that he is here with me instead of whatever happens to the poor animals that no one ponies up hundreds of dollars for. He probably would have ended up in a shelter anyway, via any number of indirect routes. Next time, if there is a next time, I plan to follow my original plan and adopt directly. read more

Despite the fact that it is extremely close to my home, I boycotted this shop for years due to the fact that they sold (most likely puppy mill) puppies. I always go to the Petsmart at 23rd and Oregon, even though it is on the other side of the city from my home. However, I was in a pinch this week and needed cat food immediately and didn't have the time to trek over to Petsmart, so I stopped at Monster Pets. Guess what- They no longer sell puppies! Apparently, the sale of animals in Philadelphia County is banned (except by licensed breeders). How did this law change without me realizing it? This is amazing news. With this fact in mind, I will probably still make the drive over to Petsmart for my pet supply needs. Monster Pets staff isn't very helpful, the store is dirty and smelly (from the small animals that they still do sell), and the prices are a bit more than Petsmart. But I'm glad to know that if I am in desperate need and don't have time to drive across town, I can stop in here for supplies. read more

Unfortunately I found myself at Monster Pets once, a few years ago, when I was desperately in need of a better cat carrier for my kitteh and had no other pet stores in my neighborhood. So that's Part II of this review: the selection was crap. The store was like a big, disorganized warehouse with half-empty shelves. They did not have any cat carriers in stock. That's really surprising given the size of the place. Last Saturday I took my 10 week old shorkie to get a haircut I told the stylist that I wanted to keep his hair just trim him and cut the hair out of his face I came back my dog was shaved down to his skin with just hair on his feet and head (I wish I could post a picture) I was in shock. I do NOT like this pet store for a variety of reasons. During "the incident that will prevent me from ever going back" I had gone into the store to buy a very specific cat food. Monster Pets carries the food; my vet recommended the food; and my finicky, elderly, digestively-challenged princess has been successfully eating the food for three years. An employee approached me as I was getting the food and asked if I was interested in hearing about a better food. I said "no thank you" and headed towards the register. She followed me and aggressively badgered me about how important it is to read ingredients, and "did I even know what was in the food I was buying"? Yes, I did. She then continued to insinuate that I did not care about the health of my cat throughout the checkout process. Not cool. When I finally asked her why they even carried a pet food that was so detrimental to the health of animals, she did not have an answer. Moreover, the prices (at least on items I have compared) are not meaningfully better than some of the small shops downtown. Litterpaw carries the brand of food I wanted but not the specific variety; however, I now know that they will order it for me for a comparable price and with no condescension. Monster Pets is saved from a 1-star review by the fact that they have a large selection of food and other needs for a wide variety of animals. The location is reasonably convenient to access by public transportation, and they have a large parking lot if you are shopping with a car. read more

While I would never buy a dog here (and you can adopt cats here for free.), I am upgrading Monster Pets fish & aquatic department. We bought a 50-cent feeder fish (goldfish) for our kid - and with proper care and advice, she is thriving in a cute 2.5 gallon take with a few decorative plants. It's been almost a month - and I hope this little fishie will have a long and healthy life. We go great advice here on first-time goldfish ownership. Not sure that this is any better than any of your other standard large pet stores like PetSmart and Petco, but I did take advantage of the pet washing station there. It was pretty cool, but just a tip, switching the knob does not change what comes out of the hose. It's not really intuitive, but the shampoo and conditioner and such are actually in bottles on top of the machine and don't come out of the machine despite what the label says on the switch on the machine. That being said they also did not have clean towels on hand and one of the employees kind of gave me an attitude like she hated to do her job when I asked her if there were any clean towels. She kept telling me to use the ones in the dirty bin as long as they were folded, hahaha. Get out of here! read more
