I was skeptical of trying this place when we were traveling back from Chicago. My partner and I couldn't agree on anywhere to eat and this is what he came up with which I reluctantly agreed to. The interior was concerning. Looked like a depressing church basement. They had these horrible tvs on that would randomly start blaring mariachi music. Food started off badly. The queso was absolutely disgusting. Horrible burnt flavor and extremely thick texture that I could barely scoop onto a chip. Chips tasted stale. My entree was the only redeeming factor because that was actually really good. Service was slow too even though we were one of the maybe 3 tables seated in the whole place. Decided to venture out and try a New Mexican place after hearing such good reviews of this one. Let's just say my trust in other is quickly declining after visiting this place the other day. Our meal started with stale chips and watered down salsa (more like chopped tomatoes out of a can). The look of anger/disappointment when my wife's meal arrived said it all. Mine wasn't much better. Here's a tip Acapulco....when the pictures of food on your menu look like crap, you may want to try changing things up. It was a terrible meal with small portions and high prices. THIS PLACE IS THE BOMB! Seriously. When you come her you are going to get good food (period!). Acapulco is a family run establishment that cooks homemade food from a rural region of Mexico. They have a map on the wall denoting where they are from. My wife and I will drive over 20 miles to eat here and most recently we did it two weekends in a row! They have a broad menu that includes all the traditional favorites and many come with combination plates for lunch or dinner that include rice and beans. Come on in and seat yourself. A server will be right there within seconds to give you a warm bowl of chips and some house made salsa (which is AMAZING!) and get your drink order. They have fountain pop (Coke products) and Mexican pop too. The menu also includes breakfast so if you come early in the day you can get your "Huevos" on! I usually just order the tacos on corn tortillas and three is enough to fill me up to the brim. I walk out satisfied and without breaking the bank. I cant say enough good things about this restaurant and as far as the SW Michigan/Kalamazoo area, its the BEST Mexican food around. So when the urge hits, this is a must go-to place for original Mexican entrees! The food is always better than the menu pictures and don't be alarmed that you can't pronounce some of the entree names--just point, the staff gets it! As usual, there was too much food on my plate so think about maybe splitting a meal to cut down on food waste. I ate as much as I could but alas, my peppers would not have made good leftovers. The drinks are limited to pops and coffee. I wanted hot tea and the waitress had to search for a tea bag, but eventually found one. We didn't get or bill brought to us, it was waiting at the counter when we got up to leave. I;m not sure what that is all about, it just took a few minutes more to look over the bill to make sure it was correct and then decide on a tip. The restaurant is located right off I 94 at the Lawrence exit--just head north--it is an easy in and out. 1 mile from 94 and it's right on the main road you turn off. There were a lot of cars in the parking lot and people were coming and going as I pulled up at the end of lunch time so that's always a good sign! Very fast service. There is a lunch special "Junior Platters" for $7.49 M-F from 10-3. It's a large selection of medium size portions of their dinner platters. The waitress was very helpful in showing me the $7.49 junior (or lunch platters) and just helpful directing me through the menu in general. Food was served quickly, hot and delicious. I'm pretty picky and hate dried out rice and tasteless beans. That said these were fresh and tasty! My main dish was a plate of grilled steak mixed with onions, peppers, tomatoes and topped with cheese. I added grilled jalapeños which were done perfect and gave it some moderate heat. I was very full and pleased with my meal. I accidentally forgot to tell them I wanted the meat to be ck instead of steak as steak a Mexican Restaurants have a tendency to be chewy/tough bc of the cut they use. I was very surprised as it was juicy and tender. Overall It was a pleasant lunch and would definitely recommend this place. Is it the best I've ever had, well no, but for rural MI (where I live) it's a hard to find/treat and will absolutely come again and would recommend others to do the same! The best time to get food from this place is always Friday the food is delicious the wait staff are friendly the ones that I've gotten anyways and the restaurant is always clean I did enjoy the option to be able to buy a dozen tacos for a super bowl or New Year's Eve party but I don't think that's an option anymore. read more

I would give this restaurant more stars. As the food here is really excellent. But I have been here three times and the service was absolutely horrible. I even told the manager out front that they would have sold extra. He just handed me my bill and didn't even seem to care. Hospitality is a huge Factor when you are running at restaurant. This place has no respect for its customers and they know that they got good food. So all they care about is your money and not the service. This place is solely GFS meets sub-par Mexican cuisine!! Salsa was tasty and sparse. Requested more salsa and chips three times to get thru the meal. Tortilla chips (qty of a snack size bag of Doritos) likely from a bag-also GFS. Our dishes were merely warm to the touch and food was room temp early into our meal. Staff was kind attentive and pleasant. My comment to my spouse "I've had better frozen Mexican entrees than this joint". It's the truth there's not much to this place. I asked for gluten free food and the cook assured the waitress that the tacos were 100% beef. This was a lie. The meat looked like processed Taco Bell with probably gluten and soy in it. The only 5 star I have ever given. To say we love this place is an understatement. I had the chance to eat there again last week while visiting with our daughter. It was 4 years since the last time I was back in Michigan. We compare every Mexican restaurant we visit to Acapulco. The chips, salsa, beans, rice are perfect. The staff have changed over the years yet everyone they have are always friendly and helpful. Ask for the special sauces they have in the fridge. There is a nice salsa verde and a smokey roasted hot sauce they don't leave out on the tables. Everything is good but my favorite of all time is the Bistec A La Mexicana. I get it with the flour tortillas. Great dinner for 8.99. I had the 3 chicken tacos though for 6.99 with warm flour tortillas. Hard to make the choice between those two favorites of mine. read more

We were on our way home from Chicago, and yelpers led me to this quaint little family owned place. The actual building is not all that, but bathrooms are very clean, service 5/5 very fast, prompt and friendly. Food 5/5 the guacamole was awesome... I got the ground beef enchiladas which were excellent, my husband got the chicken enchiladas and also loved them. Everything came with a side of beans and rice. The adult meals were $8.99 and kids meals were $6.99 I believe. Anytime we are going that way, I will be sure to stop back there. read more

Not bad. Right off the freeway which was a definite plus. Heavy Mexican food. No frills which was nice. For the most part, entrees were $11 or under. Clean. Restrooms also clean. We've visited a few times and are always very happy with our food. This visit was no exception. As usual I had the Bistec con Rajas y Queso as usual and it was excellent. This is one dish where temperature is key and it usually comes out piping hot. My wife had flautas and found them to be delicious. Service has never been amazing but this visits experience was a bit worse than usual. Our waitress arrived upon our initial arrival and when we weren't ready to order was never seen again (literally). We eventually flagged down another waitress who took care of us although she was also very slow. It seems to be standard practice that you never receive a check and have to go to the counter and tell the cashier what was in your order to checkout. Either way the food was delicious and service was what we've come to expect. We'll be back again, but aren't rushing to break the door down. read more

Was heading to AA and we found this on Yelp enroute. Pretty close to highway off the Lawrence exit. One visit but we were quite impressed. The ground beef tacos and the steak/chorizo special taco were really really good. I got the corn tortillas and they lightly fried/browned them - awesome! We also had quesadillas (good). Chips and salsa was average but fine. The red homemade hot sauce is quite yummy with with the tacos too. Portions were large and prices very reasonable. Of course I had to get a bottle of Mexican Coke (real sugar!) as well. Simple diner-like decor and clean. Server was very nice and friendly. One of our favorites is the Acapulco special for breakfast, steak with two eggs, rice and beans and guac with choice of corn or flour tortillas. So tasty and filling! Complimentary chips and salsa are also another awesome part of the experience. Though the salsa may be simple, I have never found another place that has the same taste. Some days I go there just because I'm craving the salsa. It is not chunky though , it is almost like a puree texture with fresh tomato and fresh cilantro . Very yum in my book!
