This is an update. 3.5.stars would.be ideal but ill give benefit.of doubt. The service here is excellent, staff knows the menu every detail. They all help each other out and don't make excuses. ( such as "your not my table."). This is excellent. Cocktails were okay. Espresso martini was cute with octopus design but it was average at best. Dirty martini was similar...a plus for the blue cheese stuffed olives. Appetizer of cooked oysters with parmesan and bone marrow was okay. In my opinion, there should be a slight char on the top. It was okay. Would probably not get again. The main courses are amazing. You cannot go wrong. Dessert is fair. The hazelnut dessert for a birthday person is the best and not even on the menu. The tiramisu was fair .different in that it was very dense. Overall this is quite expensive. The estimated tip on the receipt it's based on the meal plus taxes. So be aware of this. My advice for this place is stick with basic drinks, get the entrees and pass on dessert. read more

The decor is nice, per other reviews. The service is mid, per other reviews and portion sizes did not match pricing. The food is good, not stellar, but good however it is VERY overpriced for the overall experience. For the price/value of this meal, one would expect at least one of these three pillars to be excellent and yet not one really stood out. Bread service was four rolls sitting in garlic and olive oil for $10. Frito MIsto was the standard frozen seafood medley with shrimp and calamari that you might see frozen at the Fresh Market and it was $22. I splurged for the bluefin tuna and wagyu (Fan of Japan) since it was my retirement dinner and that was something like 4 ounces of tuna and 3 ounces of wagyu for $125 and there was a tiny slice of tempura enoki on the plate that was more of a garnish and should really not have warranted a spot on the menu description. Sure, we had two bottles of wine at $70 each, but for a dinner of six, even splurging to $900 with tip, we could have gotten much more food and much better food at many other places in town. Like I said, nothing was really bad, but nothing was really good. It was a miss for what we were looking for at that price level. read more

Abyss had its Grand Opening about two months ago as Downtown Greenville's first Raw Bar and ocean-to-table restaurant. It is owned by the same team behind The 05, The 07, and The One5, which are located on Augusta St, Lauren's Rd, and in the Hartness community, just off Hwy 14. Abyss is conveniently situated at the foot of the AC Hotel, at the intersection of Washington and Lauren's St, with easy parking available in two garages connected to the building. The restaurant offers fine dining in an upscale, modern atmosphere. During our visit, we observed a range of customers, from those in smart tees and shorts to those in long summer floral dresses and cocktail attire. Abyss features a full bar, a Raw Bar, and both indoor and outdoor seating options. During our visit, several specials were offered. We chose the Blackened Grouper, Lobster Cappellini, Fritto Misto Appetizer, Bread Service ($10), and a glass of white wine. The blackened grouper was exceptional. Other seafood options include Red Snapper, Ahi Tuna, and whole Dover Sole, alongside a variety of upscale steak and pasta choices. All dishes are served a la carte. The food and service were excellent, and the ambiance provided a delightful vibe. The seafood selection is among the finest in the area. I am eager to dine at Abyss again soon. read more

As soon as you walk in, Abyss is stunning. The decor feels modern, fresh, and yet as if you were deep within a beautiful blue dining area. The staff was amazing in sharing the specials and walking through the menu. I got the Bees Knees and it was perfectly matched with the Blue Fin Negi Shio. Every bite of the seared Bluefin Tuna was smooth, silky, and yet respectful for the miso butter and soy glaze to enrich the bite. Crispy and flavorful tempura was a pleasant treat to enjoy paired with the tuna. My mom had the chargrilled octopus and talk about tender-- this may have been the best octopus I've never had. The tenderness felt like butter with a kick of spice wrapped in the saffron potatoes. To finish off the small plate, she got a deliciously balanced Gold Rush. The attention to detail in the space felt anchored with the wealth of knowledge the staff had on each dish. What a gift and an experience. You know it's bad when the worst part of the meal- seeing your empty plate be taken back to the kitchen. I'll absolutely be back and may lick the plate :) read more

Really bad experience... we checked online and the restaurant close at 10 pm so we arrived by 9:15 pm and when we walked with the hostess to our table someone from the staff told her that the kitchen was closed. Close the kitchen 45 min before the restaurant closed it too early. read more

I went with my wife and friends to this place for an amazing night out. We had such a great time and the food was all top notch. We got so many different types of appetizers and I ordered the Halibut as a main dish. All of it was really amazing. Our server really stood out. He was very attentive and gave us great recommendations. We found out later it was actually his first day but he seemed so knowledgeable about the different menu options. While searching for restaurants in Greenville, SC, I stumbled upon ABYSS -- not a ton of reviews yet, but that 4.5-star rating and the intriguing menu caught my attention. I'm so glad I gave it a shot! I grabbed a seat at Jake's bar (shoutout to Jake and Jacob!), where I was welcomed with friendly service and delicious drinks. I kicked things off with their signature Old Fashioned and later tried the Siren Song -- both cocktails were crafted beautifully and full of flavor. To start, I ordered the Chargrilled Octopus. Let me warn you -- it's spicy! But WOW, the flavor was incredible. Easily one of my new favorite starters. For the main course, I chose the Red Snapper, and it did not disappoint. The fish was flaky, fresh, and the blend of flavors on the plate was absolutely perfect. This place may be flying under the radar for now, but it won't be for long. Unfortunately, this experience was incredibly disappointing, especially given the prices. The restaurant felt chaotic and messy from the moment we sat down, and the overall operation seemed completely all over the place. The bar was unable to make a proper cocktail, the service was poor, and to make matters worse, there was a hair in my food. For a restaurant at this price point, those things are simply unacceptable. I really wanted to love this place and was excited for Greenville to have a new, fun spot added to the scene, but sadly this just wasn't it. I have been to Abyss 4 times and have not been disappointed yet. The charbroiled bone marrow oysters and King crab dip are inventive starters. The lobster pappardelle is wonderfully creamy and rich. I'll start by saying how excited I am to have this restaurant in Greenville. I think it's a great addition to the city and a perfect location. The ambiance is nice. Definitely provides that luxe seafood restaurant feel, the colors are sharp, and the mermaid/siren vibe is illustrated throughout the place, which I love. There are rooms that can be closed off for private events. The regular bar and raw bar are separate from one another, which is nice, as they provide different experiences, which don't need to overlap. Moving on to the food. It was very good. It did not blow me away, though the menu provides great variety and several options, which made it hard for me to decide what to order. We settled on the octopus, tuna toast, lobster tagliatelle, and lobster roll. The appetizers were tasty, and the pasta was delicious. The lobster roll was not the best I've had in Greenville. The overall quality of the food makes it a bit hard for me to justify the price. For dessert, we shared the chocolate and strawberry semi-freddo. I was ecstatic to finally see semi-freddo on a menu in Greenville. It was very tasty. What resonated with me most was the underwhelming level of service and hospitality. Don't get me wrong- everyone was nice. But something just felt like it was missing. The greeting and farewell from the hostesses were underwhelming, and our server, though kind, didn't feel very present. This is a brand new restaurant, with very high prices for Greenville, in the heart of our bustling downtown, and I was just expecting more - a warmer welcome, a detailed explanation of the specials, some food suggestions, etc. Service and hospitality can make or break an experience for me, and while I believe Abyss has great potential, I think some more time training in this category is absolutely necessary in order to justify spending here as opposed to other restaurants downtown, where I've received exceptional service. Everything felt a bit rushed and was not the most personal dining experience I've had in town. I would return, but I will give them more time to work out the kinks. Unfortunately, our visit was disappointing despite high expectations. We were there to celebrate a birthday, but the service was inattentive and at times rude. The raw oysters were poorly presented on dinner plate with no rock salt under them. As the server went to place them on the table they were sliding off the plate and almost landed onto my partner's lap. No apology. Portions were small for the price, and throughout our visit we felt rushed, which led us to skip dessert. Unfortunately we ended going to a second restaurant to order more food because we were still hungry. Overall, we have had better seafood and service elsewhere. We got the tuna tartare, bread service and I got the fried oyster Caesar and fries. The tuna tartare was fine but I've had better. The bread service was 4 yeast rolls soaked in about a stick of butter. They weren't terrible, but I ate half of one and that was plenty (which is what I would normally say I was going to eat before I caved and ate the rest...I easily stopped at half a roll). For my meal, I really wanted a salad but based on the prices I knew they weren't meal sized (it would be a nice option!) I got the oyster Caesar and also added a side of fries. Minus the oysters and the anchovies on the salad, if you had given me this meal and told me it was from Wendy's, I would have believed you. Except Wendy's has better fries and do people even like Wendy's fries? The salad was side salad sized (again I expected this so no big deal!) It had 3 under seasoned fried oysters and 2 anchovies which were honestly a nice addition but couldn't make up for the lack of salt and pepper. It was drenched in dressing, I wish I had asked for it on the side. The $9 fries were terrible. If you are serving $9 fries, they should be hand cut, or have truffle oil or Parmesan or just...something. These were the most basic of undersalted, parsley sprinkled, 1990s country club French fries. Actually my whole meal felt like something I could have eaten at a mid-level country club, mediocre but they want you to think it's fancy so they jack the prices up. My friend got the grouper, it actually did look really good and if I had to eat here again, that's what I would get. Again the service was excellent and it really was a very nicely decorated and well done restaurant, I had a really nice time! I would absolutely go back for drinks...and then go eat elsewhere. read more

Oysters were marvelous. However came for the Dover sole (most expensive item on menu) and was throughly disappointed. while flown in the day before, .. yada yada, it was over cooked to a point of tuff and crust almost needed a knife to cut through it. The restaurant is very loud. The service was friendly but slow and forgetful. My $75 fish was overcooked, dry and bland. They rely on caper butter for flavor when the fish should shine.
