Vault and Vator was our last stop of the night, and finding it was a little confusing which is part of the fun of a true speakeasy. It is found tucked behind the building with only a small, letter-sized paper sign marking the entrance. No flashy signage, no obvious storefront, which adds to the appeal if you're into that kind of hunt. Walking up to it late at night can be a little intimidating but it is well lit which I greatly appreciated! Once inside, the space is dimly lit and small, which makes for a genuinely intimate setting. I'd say it's good for a quieter, more conversational vibe rather than a loud night out. We went with the bartender's choice: pick a base liquor, then two words to describe what you're after. I went with vodka and "slightly sweet, refreshing," for $18. The bartender nailed the brief but it wasn't a drink I'd think about again or specifically order by name. Solid execution, forgettable flavor. Service was the real standout. Our bartender was excellent at walking us through the concept and translating vague requests into something that actually worked. That, plus the atmosphere, is enough to bring me back to see what else is on the menu since we made it there just in time for last call so I ended up only having one drink. read more

A true hidden gem. The entrance to the speakeasy bar is around the back of the building in the parking lot. It's an intimate, dimly lit place. They let us choose where we wanted to sit. The server brought us waters and gave us a chance to look over the menu. We asked for straws for the water and the server brought the straws but put them in our water with her bare hands. Even aside from COVID, I do not think that was best practice. We ordered a charcuterie board and the Smokey old fashioned and Bonnie & Clyde to start. The drinks were pretty good and the presentation was cool. For the second round we ordered the Lavender Fields and Quint's Revenge. The second round wasn't as good as the first. This was my first time going. It does give off a speakeasy vibe, it's around back and if there wasn't a visible doorman I don't know if I would have known it was even a bar. The doorman that night was Kenny, he was lovely, I love making conversations with people and he was funny and enjoyable. Plus they offer "bartenders choice", where you give them flavors you like, or anything to go off really, and they make you a completely custom drink. The service is always solid, though it can get a little slow when they're really busy. Off nights are great for dates, or more intimate gatherings. The bartenders are fun and knowledgeable and the wait staff add to the speak easy vibe. What a vibe... so cool. Great tunes.. jazzy chill. We enjoyed the paper plane cocktails first and then went up a notch to the V&V dealer's choice. You pick 2 experiences .. I chose fruit and fizzy.. received a delicious old Cuban cocktail variation topped with Prosecco that was strawberry so not so sweet. Perfect! Loved it!! My boyfriend found this unique bar on our first day in Greenville! Good eye "mi amor". For this occasion, we decided to visit Vault & Vator. Location: This is the worst part because the place is hard to find. It is located in the basement of a building and the entrance is through the parking lot. The entrance has no big sign or anything very visible. We circled the building and walked right by it the first time. We had to ask some locals on the street where the bar was. Either way, the bar is located in the heart of Greenville, SC. Parking: The bar does not have its own parking lot. You have to pay for parking unless you are lucky enough to get a free parking spot on the street. We paid around $5 for 2 hours of parking. Service: The bar is very small, only about 8 tables in total, so we decided to sit at the bar. The service is pretty standard. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable about cocktails. Drinks quality: Not disappointed. The drinks are really good and unique. The flavors are completely different from any standard American Bar. We got Lavender Fields (Cathead Honeysuckle Vodka, Lavender-Vanilla Liqueur, Crème de Violette, Pineapple, Lemon, Cardamom Syrup, topped with Butterfly Pea Tea), a refreshing, relaxing, mild, and nice smelling drink, and Bitter Sweet Symphony (Rye Whiskey, Fernet, Punt e Mes, Ginger Syrup, Cranberry Bitters, Angostura Bitters) that taste very similar to bourbon old fashioned. Price: Completely acceptable. The quality of the drinks and the atmosphere are worth what you pay for the drinks. We pay for 2 cocktails $29.19 plus tip. Atmosphere: This is the best part. The bar is dark, but comfortable, cozy, romantic, a bit small, quiet, you can talk without any problem. We enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a great cocktail experience for us. Every aspect is unique. You can feel how the tastes of the drinks match with the concept and decorations of the bar. Recommendation: Open your eyes wide, so you can see the bar door. Park anywhere and explore downtown on the way to this bar. This is not a bar for just any type of person, if you are a lover of sports bars and full-of-people atmosphere, this bar will probably not be exciting to you. Would I visit this bar again? May be...if I'm bored or if a friend invite me, I'd get up and go there, but I wouldn't intentionally plan to go again once I experienced the vibe and knew the drinks already because I've been to better bars with similar themes. read more

Greenville has a speakeasy! The entrance is pretty discrete - there is a sign but kind of hidden behind a fancy metal gate. There's no passwords or secret keys to get in. You just walk up and let them know how many people are in your party. They do have to check to see if there are available seats since they don't let people stand around the bar. The inside is what I envisioned a speakeasy to be like - dark and intimate. There were several tables around the room and a few booths as well. Expect to spend some extra money here for the cocktails but they're worth it. I love craft cocktails and Vault & Vator has an amazing variety of cocktails. You can also pay $14 for Dealer's choice. The bartender makes you your own unique cocktail based on two adjectives you choose from a list. - Lavender fields: This was fantastic! I felt like I was drinking a field of flowers. I went here this past Thanksgiving in November and we had a nice experience. This place easily would've gotten 4 or 5 stars. As of coming here last night, I found the experience to be disappointing. I asked about a drink, it was described and upon ordering it, it tasted like licorice (which wasn't mentioned in the drink description or by the bartender). I asked about this and upon mentioning I don't like licorice, the bartender basically rolled her eyes, laughed and ignored me. That was very upsetting and poor customer service. I waited awhile to talk to a different bartender because apparently there was no management around. She was friendly and made me a new drink no problem. At the end, the original bartender said goodbye to us which I thought was funny. They could work on their overall customer service. Great little speakeasy. You don't need any password or secret entrance to enter. There is a guard in the front that check the IDs and make sure that there is seats available inside. A knowledgeable local brought me here for cocktails after a dinner we shared on the Riverwalk. I was not disappointed! I didn't want to do my old regular which is a Manhattan. I figured I could find something on their list to help me "live a little". I did: the Vieux Carre. Their menu includes the name of the drink's inventor, when and where it was invented. Walter Bergeron, you genius, thank you for coming up with what will be my new favorite drink in New Orleans in 1938. It's got all the right stuff. Arguably it's not so far off from a Manhattan but includes a few extras. I didn't hang around for food, as we came here after after already having eaten. It's a speakeasy environment. It's a bit darker inside but very chill and easy going. They have several rules about how to behave here and it certainly helps make the experience. I sat at a four person table near the door. It was a booth-style seat against the wall and two stool chairs opposite that were highly uncomfortable. Prices were typical for custom-made cocktails so I can highly recommend it. read more

What a fun place! I came here with my sister and Mom during a girls' weekend. We were so excited to find a quiet space to catch up on a Friday night. We were immediately welcomed and seated. I enjoyed the booth seating. It was private and comfortable. The waiter was very knowledgeable and able to guide our decisions. My mom really needed a drink without bubbles and they were able to accommodate her. My first drink was a whiskey based cocktail with spiced pear liqueur. It was delicious, but a bit too sweet for me. I typically enjoy more Spirit forward drinks, so I changed directions. I explained to him how much I love smoke and that I wanted to try their Sazerac and he really made me an amazing drink. He filled a glass skull head with the already made cocktail and then proceeded to fill the rest of the glass with smoke. He then placed a cork in the top of the glass skull and brought it to the table. The smoke was sitting on top of the cocktail inside the glass skull head and looked so amazing. He then proceeded to do a "smoke wash" where he mixed the Sazerac in with the smoke. He then poured it into a glass for me. I've been to many cocktail places and have had smoked drinks, but I had never seen anything like this. I was very impressed and it was delicious. A very interesting place. FYI - if you're looking for it on the main road you won't find it. Go down the stairs between Vintage Now Modern and Pedal Chic and you'll find it at basement level to the right. There was a hostess waiting outside the door when we approached. This may be to control the number of people allowed in, because they don't allow standing inside. There's a dark drape between the gated door and entry, and there's subtle lighting and quaint music playing once inside. There's (too small) tiny tables for two against the wall as you walk in, some larger booths lining the walls, cozy seating in the middle of the room, as well as barstools along the bar. There's a quiet hum of people talking and the clinking of glasses at the bar. No cell phone use is allowed inside, but you can take photos (we asked, and were discreet about it). We balanced ourselves at our tiny table and ordered cocktails. My husband ordered his favorite high-end bourbon ($14) and I tried the Pimms #1 cocktail ($12). The combination of cucumber, lime sherbet, and ginger tea seemed like it would be refreshing. The flavor was mostly cucumber and tea so I wouldn't say that it was delicious, but it was interesting to try and I did finish it. The food choices are limited to appetizers. We ordered the pimento cheese small plate ($8) and the fava bean hummus ($7), all of which was served on mismatched china, with tea towels as napkins, both of which added to the old fashioned atmosphere. Both dishes were generous servings and enjoyed more so by my husband than I. I would say go at least once to check it out and see if it's for you.
