We were pleasantly surprised by this Mexican restaurant on 83rd Ave. and Peoria. It's a large building with lots of seating at booth tables and bar area. Put your name in at reception and you were taken back usually after a small weight. We didn't have to wait yesterday. The servers are really friendly and checked on a frequently refilling hubs soda a few times without him having to ask. Our waitress also brought us an extra bowl of spicy salsa because she saw we had eaten all of it. Just brought us another basket of hot and chips. On our first visit, I got enchiladas and instead of rice and on the side I decided to choose their potatoes. The potatoes are so delicious. I love them, and I will look forward to these again when we return. Today we ordered: - Coke - Diet Coke (no Coke Zero here) - NACHOS GRANDE - Tortilla chips, cheddar & Monterey Jack cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo, jalapeños. Choose seasoned ground beef, slow-roasted chicken or refried beans, or for an extra dollar, substitute fire-grilled steak or chicken fajita. I chose the chicken fajita protein topping. I ordered this for an entrée, but it would be a really good appetizer for 3 to 6 people. It's almost like cheese crisps, halved, with lots of melted cheese and a small amount of meat on each tortilla half. In the center there are toppings. I enjoyed the pickled jalapeños because they weren't extra hot. This hit my comfort food spot. I wasn't able to eat the whole thing so it was so big, but it was exactly what I was looking for. - THE GRANDE COMBINATION - Beef, chicken, cheese enchiladas, cheese chile relleno, tamale, crispy beef taco, guacamole. This combination is HUGE! Even the plate is grande. Absorbed this, and I think his eyes were larger than his stomach. He filled up on the beans and the rice, the chile relleno, and the taco. He got to take three enchiladas and a tamale for dinner the next night. A very nice tasty plate. Complementary chips and three types of salsa are brought to the table. Of the salsas, one is a red sauce that is mild, one is a pineapple tomatillo, and one is a spicier red salsa. The chips are nice and fresh and thin and brought to the table warm. Horrible hostess! Place was very empty with no line and at least 10 empty tables but she made us wait 10 minutes to be seated. She attempted to sit us in a booth. When requesting a table she stated there were only 2 servers and that the tables were not in their "section" which was only 4 feet from the booths! Stupidity at epic levels! We turned around and left after wasting 10 minutes. Eat at Firebirds across the street for better food, service and a hostess with brains! read more

We came to sample their Steak/Chicken fajitas, Cheese/Chicken/Beef Enchiladas and Chicken/Beef tacos for our banquet... plenty of open space seating which allowed us to talk at a reasonable noise level. Everything was very well seasoned and tasty! The free chips and 3 salsas are worth it! The Abuelo's dip sampler is an excellent starter! We ordered The Grande sampler & Steak/Chicken Fajitas Combos. I had an incredible experience at Abuelos Mexican Food in the Phoenix area! The atmosphere is simply magical--like stepping into a charming old Mexican village, with pillars, statues, and a ceiling that feels like a partly cloudy blue sky. The food was outstanding--two of us had the Mexican Stack, a deluxe tostada bursting with flavor, and one of us ordered the pork chimichanga, served with rice and beans--both plates were beautiful. The homemade salsas that came with the chips were fresh and vibrant, and the guacamole was incredibly creamy and flavorful. The drinks were a highlight too--you could really taste the alcohol, strong but reasonably priced. And the service was spot on--not too intrusive, but always attentive. It's been awhile since we've been here, so we thought we'd give it a try again. Previous experience found very fishy tasting tilapia and poor service, so we were wary! On this trip, my wife tried the grilled mahi, which may be new to the menu, and it was just outstanding! I had my tried and true stuffed quesadilla with chicken and beef, and it was also great. The service was spot on, and the entire experience was very nice. With our faith restored in Abuelos (Grandpas for you gringos), we will be back again...soon! read more

Our second time to this location. Again I got the chile rellenos. They messed up my order and brought rice instead of the papas con chile, so they brought me some as a side. Food was good, but service was a little hit and miss. I could've used more iced tea but didn't get a chance to order more. I'm guessing we'll be back next time we're in town. read more

We've been to Abuelo's a few times, and it's always good! I came here for lunch this time, and I really like how open and nicely decorated the restaurant is. The statue, the sky ceiling, and all the paintings make it feel really unique. The portions are huge, and the food is delicious. I got the Shrimp Fajita Salad, and my son had the Green Chile Chicken Quesadilla, we both loved our food! Their salsa is super good too. Definitely coming back to try their happy hour and Family-Style Feast next time. read more

Great $5 cocktails and apps like guacamole, queso, chile diablo and beef empanadas. We love the huge helping of queso and the fresh and bright guacamole. The Grande is huge: share it between 2 people: Crunchy beef taco, chile relleno, cheese, chicken and beef enchiladas, beef tamale served with guacamole and two sides. While I was in the Peoria area,I had the pleasure of visiting Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant. It was a nice experience overall. Immediately my boyfriend and I were greeted as we entered the restaurant. And were seated, right away. The restaurant was packed for a Saturday night. Our server TJ, was attentive, explained the menu on any items that were needed. In fact, I appreciated that the first item I ordered, I didn't quite enjoy. But TJ checked in to see how everything was going. I shared the meal was lukewarm with the meat in my Mexican bowl. So I opted for a bean and cheese burrito... and that was the better choice!!! The beans were definitely homemade in taste. The sauce had pieces of meat in the sauce. It was so yummy!!! My better half ordered a sampler of tacos, enchiladas and tamale. He enjoyed it. Everything was good. The next time I want authentic Mexican food, in Peoria I know where to go. read more

Not good at all. The food wasn't hot and the steak was cooked barely rare. This has happened the last two times. This was the third strike.

Update 9/25 Tried their empanadas and was very pleased with the flavor of the filling and the dipping sauce. My friend loved the chimichanga and had to take 1/2 home. I still can't get enough of the murals and that great central courtyard area with the clouds ceiling, but hard to get good angles of the murals because of the way they have the light shining off them. Once again the server was superb! My out of town friend remembered the old fountain in the center and missed it. I had to laugh since my review last time stressed that too! ******* read more

Pretty decent food and service. I thought this place was more expensive than it actually was. Could've sworn last time we went my wife paid over $80. My green pork chimichanga was great and their spicy mashed potatoes are pretty darn good! My wife had something else I forget what it was. Lol.. We went in on a Monday during happy hour and sat at the bar and ordered off the HH menu. The empanadas were delicious. They seemed more like flaky tacos though but so tasty. You get 2 large empanadas per order that are stuffed with a nice amount of ground beef that is seasoned well with a nice spicy blend. The queso was a nice consistency and tasty but could have used a bit of spicy pepper taste. Chips were fresh and plentiful and the salsa was fresh and had a nice kick to it. The HH margaritas were tasty and nicely balanced. Service was friendly and attentive. read more

Service was horrendous my server Ahmad did not care that we were out of drinks and need it refills, my poor soon was shocking on his food without water on the table. My wife finally decided not to ask for more refills, he came to the table twice during our whole visit, chips were only refill once after waiting 25 minutes for him to come to our table. My wife's entry was delivered with the wrong items and he didn't seem to care. Our whole experience was ruined by this guy it was my 58 birthday when we told him about it he didn't seem to care and walked away my desert was flan which he brought 15 minutes after we paid. This guy doesn't belong in the hospitality or restaurant business you going to loose a lot of money and customers. I gave one star because I couldn't give less. read more

Refreshing!!! This can be said for the atmosphere /decor inside the restaurant and the food . This is not your usual run of the mill Mexican restaurant. The menu is truly unique with entrees other restaurants in this category do not include. Prices are definitely reasonable with a Happy Hour that lasts from 11 until 6 as of this posting. Another plus: Seniors 60 and above can order from the lunch menu all day long. How often do you see that !!!! We started with the El Jeffe Margarita hand shaken with Maestro Dobel Diamanté tequila hand selected, private barrels for Abuelo's, Agavero Orange Liqueur and fresh citrus, topped with a grilled orange and kosher salt rim!! Soooo smoky and yummy. The enchilada lunch (two hand rolled enchiladas which could be a spinach,corn, mushroom in cream sauce, chicken, cheese, avocado (like guacamole and beef)that comes with two sides of your choice: Papas con Chile (sort of like a Mexican version of mashed potatoes with cheese chunks peppers etc *FABulous* or Mexican rice and refried beans topped with their unique sauces (not the usual red ranchero or green tomatillo sauce) . I HIGHLY recommend you think out of the box and go for this party in your mouth experience. Another ordered the chile relleno and enchilada combo with the roasted pepper stuffed with slow roasted hand-shredded beef (or your choice of the traditional cheese) and another in our party ordered the fajita tacos. I am dying to go back to try their Puebla Aztecs *cheese chile relleno chicken enchilada, crispy empanada stuffed with ground beef* or the Mi Abuelo's Manjar *three stacked enchiladas, beef, cheese, chile con carne topped with two farm eggs.* or the Chicken Tampiquena Lunch *grilled chicken with a savory fajita glaze cilantro lime rice with green chile sauce seasoned vegetables, hand rolled cheese enchilada topped with their signature green chile sauce ** Oh my !There are other unique choices like the Alhambre Lunch, or Fresca bowls. We started our meal with the traditional chips which were excellent and three salsas (two red with different degrees of spiciness and one milder green which was not the traditional green tomatillo salsa). In addition being that it was our first time we ordered the Abuelo's Dip Sampler .... A trio of our savory dips : creamy chile con queso (my fav), hand mashed guacamole, and a fiery queso diablo (another's favorite) served with fresh, homemade chicharrones. How's that !!! Grace, our waitress was excellent and explained and recommended for our benefit and she was spot on ! I adored the murals on the walls, the inside palm enhanced inner indoor courtyard and the statues. I can not wait to go back. Great food, great service, great atmosphere.... We've been making the journey to Restaurant Row on 83rd maybe three times annually for 25 years, always on the way to some other eatery, passing by Abuelos and telling each other, "We have to try there sometime." This week, we made the trip specifically to try Abuelos, and we're glad we did. On the trip out, I reviewed their menu and was pleasantly impressed. The dishes were inventive and novel, not the same old things you see at every Mexican restaurant. We settled on what we would order before we got there: the pork tenderloin abrigada, and the green chile pork chimichanga. The decor was a nice surprise. I felt as if I were entering a sunlit Renaissance courtyard, with an open-air atrium and colorful murals. Our meals were excellent, and generous. My spinach enchilada (something I've never seen elsewhere) was awesome. Our waitress was helpful and attentive, timely refilling our drinks, chips, and salsa. I was intrigued by their "skinny margarita," made with non-sugar sweetener, so I tried it. Acceptable indeed, and much more delicious than I expected, especially for something "better for me." I won't wait anywhere near 25 years to visit Abuelo's again. read more

We came in on a Thursday afternoon towards the end of the lunch rush, around 1:30 pm. We got seated quickly, but service was very hit or miss. We ordered basic drinks apart from the $5 happy hour deal for the raspberry-hibiscus margarita. Our regular drinks came quickly with chips and salsa, but the alcoholic beverage came only with our food. Plates were super hot and burnt us several times. Food was very oily and flavor was a 6/10. It was my first time here and it'd been talked up by family and friends so I was a bit bummed that it didn't live up to the hype of others. Great food and a big selection on the menu. Service is quick and efficient and the restaurant is very large so there is room for everybody. They can hold large groups of people, just call before you arrive and they will assist with getting tables together. They do have a service charge applied to take out orders to cover the cost of to-go containers. read more

Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant - Sizzling fajitas trio! The Best!!! - Mexican Near Me - Peoria, Arizona

As our usual outcome when visiting Abuelo's... full, satisfied and content. The preparation, presentation, serving, environment, ambience and the tastes are superb! I was recently disheartened to realize that all but one Abuelo's Mexican Restaurants in the Valley of the Sun are left - so we made a pilgrimage to Peoria for a taste of our only big box, chain and corporate Tex-Mex! Our primary location used to be in Chandler, but with that closing, we had no choice but to travel close to an hour to enjoy a feast. Once arrived we put our travel reluctancy aside and ordered - what we are thinking may be our last visit, and enjoyment of their offerings. We obviously started with El Jefe Margarita, wimps had Iced Tea, a Blackberry Mint Mojito (they actually used Flor de Caña Rum) and my wife enjoyed her fave Sangria Roja on the Rocks. While sipping away, we were able to decipher from their extensive menu just what to order. Our party was hungry and desirous of a meal at Abuelo's. Our table ordered and pretty much devoured everything so much so that we did not have to order to go boxes. The table gobbled up the likes of the Abuelo's Dip Sampler, a well portioned Guacamole Salad with Soup, a Taco Carnita Plate, my wife having her favorite Chicken Tampiqueña, and I my fave Chile Relleno and Enchilada! As usual, the accoutrements, sides and additions were fab. I must say that since our moving to the Phoenix Area over a decade ago, Abuelo's has been one of our few go to restos for TexMex! We've loved family-oriented, home-style, TexMex and seem to find it to be always above with its service, tastes, consistency even with its enchanting yet extravagant in décor! We sincerely wish the corporate powers that will be able to ameliorate their situation of having filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and comes out stronger. As I have mentioned before, Abuelo's as a multi-state operation does an excellent and resilient job of product consistency from visit to visit, which not many such operations can extend. We hope that its parent company Food Concepts International has the resilience, management know-how and financial acumen to sustain a restaurant that has so enriched its patrons. I haven't been to Abuelo's in 20 years! The fact it's still standing in this location tells me all I needed to know. Hands down the greatest Mexican food I've had in probably forever. I'm over here kicking myself for not returning sooner. The location is beautiful inside. From the nice decor, large bar and comfortable seating we had a great time. Our server was friendly and attentive. He gave great options he liked off the menu. We started with the Diablo Queso and it was delicious! It also comes with its own chips. The table comes with free chips and three salsas if you don't want to order extra appetizers. For main courses we ordered the green chile pork chimichanga and Chicken Tampiquena. My husband chose of a side was their signature mashed potatoes (freaking phenomenal). The refried beans tasted homemade and I loved the flavors of my chicken Tampiquena mixed with the rice and seasoned veggies. Even though we were so full by the end we just had to try their Dulce de Leche Cheesecake. 11/10 would recommend even if you took it home for later. So good! Best part besides of course the food was the prices. They offer a great happy hour as well as reasonable prices meals with huge portions. We can't wait to be back. read more

I started with the chips and salsa, and while I appreciated the variety (especially the unique sweet green salsa and chipotle corn chips), the standard salsa didn't really stand out. 2/5 stars. The $15 gold margarita was a highlight. It's served with a shaker that gives you about three pours--a great deal. While it was a bit too sweet for my taste, the alcohol was strong but well-masked, making it what I'd call a "silent killer." 4/5 stars. I ordered the Puebla Azteca and made a smart swap--traded the beef empanada for bacon-wrapped stuffed shrimp. That shrimp was easily the best part of the meal--5/5 stars. Unfortunately, the chile relleno was a letdown. Though it had plenty of cheese, the fry didn't complement the pepper well. 2/5 stars. The chicken enchilada was fine but forgettable--3/5 stars. However, combining the cheesy green chile from the relleno with the enchilada bumped that combo up to a solid 4/5. Service was excellent, and food came out fast, which always adds to the experience. Overall: A mixed bag with some highs and lows. The shrimp and margarita were winners, but a couple of core items underdelivered. Worth a visit, especially for the vibes and service, but not quite top-tier across the board. I'd give it 3.5/5. Going to go ahead and round it up to that 4. read more

Wonderful food, service, & atmosphere! Our group enjoy margaritas various margaritas & aquarium- each was as ordered & excellent. We loved the 3 salsa, especially the unexpected verde pineapple salsa. Our dinners included pork verde chimi and 2 different fish choices - I had Mahi with a creamy shrimp sauce. Had not been to Abuelo's in awhile and was not disappointed tonight. Ricardo was our server and did a great job serving us. I got the Puebla Azteca and my wife got the Shrimp Fajita salad and both of us took leftovers home because it was so much food. We split the southwest bacon shrimp appetizer and everything was delicious. Ricardo brought us a chip refill to go and was super attentive; our waters were never below halfway filled. read more
