We had a neighborhood ladies lunch here with about 20 woman. First off I have to say, the view is the best! It is an open layout with plenty of room which was nice. We had two servers and the one I had was excellent. She got all our drinks and orders taken and was quick to return with our orders. As far as food goes, I would say that was a mixed bag. I personally had a Caesar salad with grilled shrimp, my go to order for lunch. Unfortunately it was drowned in dressing and I am someone who likes dressing. A few of the ladies had the burgers and loved them and someone else had the pokey bowl and said it was good too. I would like to come back and try something else and enjoy the view. Came here with a large group and we all loved both the food and the ambiance! One member of our group is gluten-free and loved the larger Gf-menu. I loved that there were several really good vegan options as well. We sat on the rooftop, with a great view of the ocean. I would definitely recommend this place for a large group! My one rec would be that it was a little hard to seat our larger group on the roof- there were restrictions about which areas different servers correspond to, which felt a little unnecessary. Thought it would be cute to sit above the dunes and watch the ocean at Above the Dunes... it had a chaotic atmosphere which seemed to lack any kind of organization. Our waiter took our order. My friend got the chicken caprese and I got the lobster ravioli. We were not impressed at all, please see pictures. My friend's chicken was tough and hard to cut through. The waiter was kind and asked if she wanted anything else or remove from the check. She made a smart move and didn't order anything else. My lobster meat was fine. The pasta came out cold and the plate lukewarm. The cheese ravioli lacked much flavor perhaps would have been better hot. I let the waiter know it was cold. Came back a few minutes later and brought the same pasta with a hotter plate. Over all not impressed. Worse $32.00 I could have spent. Maybe the drinks are better there??? read more

We came here based on recommendations. Honestly it was nothing like I expected. It was a sticky sports Ike bar. The tables were sticky- it's damp inside- which isn't surprising considering it's on a beach. The food was okay. The crab dip was the best thing but the chips were few and stale. The fried shrimp Tacos had 5 pieces of shrimp total which were totally over fried. They were laid on a heaping of cabbage. The Maryland crab soup was fine- nothing to write home about. We were 2 couples for lunch on a weekday off season - first time. Food good not great. But service awful. Had a trainee and trainer combo. Worst was when my wife asked if her tuna could be cooked a bit extra trainer said it "comes one way -so it's that way or the highway ". We visited Above The Dunes tonight for the 1/2 price entrees . I had scallops , risotto with spinach, hubby had sea bass, rice and spinach. For desert we enjoyed the peach cobbler with ice-cream. "Drive along the sea Far from the city's twitch and smoke That's where my life became a joke On the dunes" (Donald Fagan) Next time you're strolling down the Rehoboth boardwalk, look up way high over the boardwalk level stores and snack bars, because over them all is a very sweet restaurant named Above the Dunes. When you enter from the street level, a staircase points you up to the second floor that opens up into a huge dining room and bar. The dining room has a gorgeous baby blue color scheme for its furniture and tablescapes, and after our meal we also noticed that color scheme extended to their eye catching and very distinctive exterior lighting. So, if you're on the boardwalk at night, you sure can't miss it. The menu is heavy on all types of seafood with tacos, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and steaks for the non-seafood crowd. I started off with a Maryland Crab soup ($10) that was jam packed with tender crab meat in a delicious broth with diced carrots and potatoes. We both went to the salad menu for a Caribbean Bowl ($19) with Jerk chicken, pineapple, rice, roasted broccoli, corn salsa, pico, and Cajun ranch dressing and an ATD Chicken Salad ($15) with house made chicken salad with grapes, celery, almonds, mayo, and old bay, over a bed of lettuce. My Caribbean Bowl was excellent. What a mix of colors and textures and tastes! Every component was delicious, especially the fresh pineapple and jerk spiced chicken. Service from Evan was fine, he was quick with our water and refills and a mid-meal checkback. Thank you Above the Dunes for making our last dinner in Rehoboth such a pleasant experience. My friend and I could not decide where to go for dinner and since we both never been here we decided to give it a whirl. When we got upstairs we thought it was pretty cool and pretty atmosphere. It took a little time for a waiter to come over to take our order. I knew exactly what I wanted pretty quickly. I seem to be on a caprese kick on my visit to Rehoboth this time around so, I figured why not give the Chicken caprese a try. For some reason, not sure why or how I thought I was getting a salad and then after my dish came I saw on menu that it comes on a bun and with chips. So, I guess I got a chicken caprese sandwich, which I had never seen before on a menu. It looked pretty sad and when I tried to cut through it, it was a bit hard too and I felt like it was not cooked all the way. The cheese too itself was a bit hard to cut and that was odd. And I asked for the balsamic glaze on the side and I saw there was some balsamic on the cheese. When I saw the side of balsamic vinegar in its container it was like a drop. I was just totally confussed by this dish as a whole. I told our waiter and he asked if I wanted something else or for it to be off the check which was nice of him to ask. I went with that option. My friend got lobster ravioli which came out cold at first. She sent it back to be warmed up more. When it came back again it still was not that hot/warm and she said that the lobster was good but ravioli itself was not good. This place also seemed a bit disorganized and like there was no order to it. Also, when I went to the restroom, it seemed that the floor was a bit slippery and I could see some spots of water possibly or something. I thought it was my shoes but my friend said how she could see something. There was also some crumbs and food under our table so makes me ask myself if they cleaned before we sat down. There is a nice view of the ocean and the beach from this restaurant especially if you sit by the window or even in their outside deck area. We also saw many groups here like what could be birthdays and bachelorette parties. So it seemed like a good place for that. Maybe my friend and I ordered the wrong choices here because everyone else's food that we saw come out looked appetizing. Ever since this place opened, we've been going and enjoying the food, the views, and the terrific wait staff. But this season, we have been twice and both times were pretty bad. About 3 weeks ago, my husband and I both got fish tacos. The shrimp was overcooked (kind of hard) and the flavors just didn't gel. Today I got a French dip. The flavor was good but the meat quality, compared to French dip served at other restaurants, was inferior. My friend got a cali sandwich which supposedly comes w avocado - it had a light smear of avocado on one part of the bun. Located right off the boardwalk, we stopped in here during our first visit to Rehobeth Beach, actually it was our first stop. My wife and I ordered a couple of cocktails to start from our friendly waitress, an Orange Crush for her and a Tanqueray Martini for me to go along with some 1.50 Happy Hour Oysters, fresh and delicious from VA. After enjoying our great drinks and oysters we ordered lunch. My wife ordered the Fish Sandwich, beer battered haddock along with some hush puppies and I went with the Boston Lobster Roll, served just like I like it with butter and lemon, both were excellent. The egg rolls were sitting in a bed of grease along with the lettuce, mahi mahi tacos were all slaw no fish a small piece size of my finger. We went for lunch and the music was not too loud and we were fortunate enough to be seated right by the windows without a reservation (coming in the off-season helps with this of course). The host staff came off a bit curt when we brought it up, which wasn't ideal. Thankfully, Jim was quick to help and got it adjusted, which we really appreciated. While the overall experience was enjoyable, it would've been nice if the birthday had been acknowledged in some way, especially since it was mentioned beforehand. Still, the service was solid, the food was good, and the setting made for a pleasant evening. Definitely worth checking out if you're after coastal dining with laid-back charm. read more

Great location on the second floor above the boardwalk at Wilmington Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, but mediocre dining experience. Each dish ordered was adequate, but left something to be desired. First, the crab legs appetizer were only twelve small legs without fresh taste. Second, the Maryland Crab Soup was tomato based with only small bits of crab, carrot and peas. Really expected more of those main ingredients, especially the crab. Third, the Fish & Chips while substantial, was over salted breaded haddock (although the haddock steak was a good size). Waffle fries were quite good. We requested that everything be served at once, but the crab legs came almost immediately. When pointed out, our server explained that dish came from the bar, not the kitchen. Okay, but that should have been explained to us when we made the request, or preferably, she had timed the order to make everything be ready at the same time. That seemed above the restaurant's ability. No need to point out the menu inflation, which is ubiquitous these days. But, when satisfaction is minimal, the cost issue becomes more apparent and irritating. Maybe lunch on the balcony overlooking the dunes, beach and Atlantic is a better way to go. read more

One of our kids has a severe shellfish allergy and our waitress was fantastic with checking with the kitchen as to what he could have/ it would have been amazing if they had a fryer just for shellfish allergy so he could have had the cheesesteak eggrolls with us and fries with his burger but that's okay. We had the edamame and calamari appetizer. Calamari was fantastic. Entrees included the boardwalk burger, fish sandwich, seafood pasta, poke bowl, kids mac and cheese with fries, orange crush and margarita. Burger was a small for the price. Seafood pasta was fantastic and so was the fish sandwich. Poke bowl was good but would have been great with a side of wasabi or a spicy mayo. It was lacking flavor but freshness was on point. We've been here several times with our guests and the service has been consistently lacking. The first visit this Spring we were served by a young lady who had "...just started today" on a Saturday night(?). The drinks took a while to make because the bartenders were.more focused on BSing with the waitresses. Then the drinks stayed on the bar waiting pickup for a good 10-15 minutes. 25 minutes later we received our drinks with ice melted. The food overall wasn't too bad but was a tad cold from again awaiting pickup too long. My next visit was to the bar in the afternoon and I went solo for some oysters. The oysters took a while as did taking and delivering my order. Many of the oysters were butchered while shucking, some were not cut from the shell muscle properly making them hard to extract in one piece and most were small in size. Flustered I wanted another beer but had to wait on this quiet afternoon for the bartenders talking to everybody else but their customers! Even getting the check was like pulling teeth. Our second visit with guests was very similar to our first - relatively good food marred by bad table and bar service. Our guests were not impressed and remarked at how loud the place was. We didn't want to wait longer for getting dessert so we left. I thought then that I might not be back for a while until these folks got their act together. As I'm writing this my 19 year old daughter told me she went there this past week with her boyfriend for lunch. She wasn't very hungry so wanted just a small grilled cheese from the Kid's menu. The waitress actually told her that the Kid's menu was for 11 year olds and younger and that she was "too old to order from the Kid's menu.". I've been in the food service business for years and know when a server is trying to run up a tab to increase their tip and this was exactly what happened here! What? Are they going to card kids before ordering from the Kid's menu? ... and what kid under 18 has an ID proving their age?! IMHO this is not surprising but taking advantage of a younger diner is. This is one of the few restaurants with a view of the ocean at Rehoboth. Unfortunately, the food is typical bar food. Tonight I went there because my daughter likes to look down at the people walking the boardwalk. She ordered plain pasta and was surprised to find a shrimp shell in her pasta. Thank god she isn't allergic to shellfish. I told the server so that she could let the kitchen know. The service was great however the food wasn't the best. We started out with the crab dip and cheesesteak egg rolls. The crab dip was pretty good some of the wontons that came with it were stale though. The cheesesteak egg rolls had potential however they were drenched in grease. As for entrees we ordered French onion soup, black and blue salad, Mahi Mahi tacos and the Chilean seabass. The French onion soup was ok I wasn't expecting the old bay sprinkled on top. The black and blue salad was ok however for the size of the salad the amount of dressing they give you should be double. The Mahi Mahi tacos were more coleslaw than fish and the Chilean sea bass was ok but the rice it came with was cold. Honestly for the amount of money we spent there I feel the food should be better. With all that being said the manager did come over and ask how our food was and he did try to fix the problem. When we arrived, I was a bit nervous, the hostess was working on something on the computer for a bit as we stood there, it was a bit uncomfortable. After we were finally seated, our waiter Kyle was very attentive. Our drinks & appetizers came out pretty quick & were delicious. Then our meal. The scallop risotto was perfect. I have always loved sitting upstairs on the balcony to enjoy a drink with one of the best views of the beach in Rehoboth. We came in for a late lunch after noticing the "happy hour 1-5pm" sign. We enjoyed a drink and shared some delicious $1.50 oysters and a 1/2lb of steamed shrimp, both HH specials. The seafood tasted so fresh and yummy. The rest of the menu looked to have some other great choices and variety. I hope this restaurant concept sticks around for a while. read more
