North Star Mini Storage - Self Storage with climate control in Burnsville!!

North Star Mini Storage

I recently vacated my storage unit and reunited all my "treasures." North Star served me well for…read morefour years. There is great security here and I never felt like my possessions were in danger of being damaged by weather or being taken by thieves. Not only do you need a code (that you set yourself) to get in the gate, you also need a different one to get in the building itself where I had my things stored. The customer service here is outstanding and very professional. I never had any issues with trying to get in touch with someone on the rare occasion that I needed to. The storage areas are clean and very well lit and maintained, and it's one of the more reasonably priced facilities that I was able to find. Would highly recommend these folks if you are in need!

What a fantastic storage facility! I had a large unit there for about two and a half years. During…read morethat whole time, they never raised my rent! Due to the top-notch security system, I never had any problems getting access to my unit. No one ever broke into it either. The system is set up where you have to input a unique personal code to even enter the property. Nice little protective measure, right there at the street. Then you drive to your unit, which can be either indoors or outdoors. Mine was inside, because I wanted a warmer, drive-up space for all my stuff. Having the car parked inside--right next to the unit--is very convenient. There are other features that keep everything secure. For example, the doors to the building housing the indoor units will not open unless a valid personal code has been input at the entrance gate. Also, the unique personal codes are linked to specific storage units. So you have to unlock and enter your unit, or else the system will alert an on-site employee. Translation: anyone who is not authorized to enter the property will be unable to gain access to any storage units. Even the people who have legitimate units can only enter their own particular storage spaces. Speaking of security, there are surveillance cameras around the property and inside the buildings. A little redundancy there, but additional layers of security and protection are always reassuring. And you can use your own lock, whatever you prefer. One unusual feature is that the buildings are tucked into a carved-out area of a hillside. That shields everything from the prevailing weather patterns coming out of the north, northwest and west. This makes for warmer conditions. Even during winter visits to my storage units, the 'icebergs' in the wheel wells of my car would start melting and fall off. This facility is situated right on the edge of a large commercial area that contains just about every type of store or restaurant you might need to visit. Closeness to Costco (~ 1 mile away) was helpful to me, because I was able to purchase some inexpensive shelving that helped me get my unit better organized. There's also a Salvation Army Thrift Store nearby. They accepted all my donations of furniture and other salable items when the time came to let go of certain possessions (yes it happens!) and get myself moved out of state on short notice. Finally, the people who work for North Star are very professional, honest and downright helpful. My thanks to you two--Alec and Albert--for the positive difference that you made in my life!

Things you don't have control over are the forty minute wait I had when I called UHaul. They have a text option for an "immediate response" but when I took the effort to use that while I was on hold the response was that someone would be with me in eight minutes. After 18 minutes somebody came on and dumped me before I had a chance to type something. But as you say, that is an issue with UHaul. Your issue is the bait-and-switch I got when your employee quoted me a rate and then misinformed the district manager when she discussed this with them. Anyone can make mistakes but if you don't own them and all you do is point fingers at everyone else you will never improve. On Wednesday I called for a quote for a 2-3 hour rental for the following Friday. She quoted me a daily rate plus $.79 per mile. When I brought the truck back he charged me $1.29 per mile and had added a liability waiver fee of $14.00. It may have been in the paperwork but he made no verbal mention of the higher weekend rate or the liability waiver (most insured Minnesota drivers already have this as part of their coverage) . Yeah, I should have looked through all the paperwork but it was busy so I wanted to free him up for the next customer. After a lot of screaming and an hour on the UHaul website/phone they refunded the unnecessary liability waiver that they jam on everyone without asking/mentioning but they didn't refund the mileage differential. Sure it's only $25 but I've never had this kind of problem when I've rented from Ryder Response: You may not have any control over UHaul but the original quote came from your store when I dialed your number. After calling around to multiple storage facilities in the area and being told they were completely full and they couldn't fit us in, Tim at Lake Marion Storage came to the rescue. While at first he said they were currently full, he sensed the urgency in my voice, and offered to walk the property to see what he could do for me and called me back soon thereafter saying he found a spot that might work for my camper and to stop by and try it out. When I wanted to move the camper to an indoor spot in the winter, without any hesitation, he stopped my payment for the winter while still holding my spot for the spring and summer months of this year. We recently moved to the other side of the Twin Cities and had to find a spot closer to our new home. I just called and said I had to cancel and Tim immediately stopped payment, thanked me for my business and cheerfully ended the call with "Happy Travels!" Only adjusting this overall experience from a 5 to a 4 because we didn't experience the indoor storage spaces, but as for customer service, accommodation and friendliness, I give Tim at Lake Marion 5 stars! Thank you!

I am writing this review as a WARNING!!! We recently needed some "climate controlled" clean…read morestorage for our furniture and other belongings we did not want to put into a pole barn we have during a home renovation. When I walked in to lease the space (we ended up renting TWO large climate controlled units) at over $600 per month I was told that the units were climate controlled, had no moisture or water issues and I specifically asked about rodents. I was reassured they had no problems. Let's fast forward to when we checked out. We ended up using the units for approx. 8 months, so we paid Lake Marion Storage around $4,800 in rent for the peace of mind that our valuables and furniture would be well kept. When we went to remove our furniture (moved in and out by hired professional movers). We found severe water damage to expensive furniture, and extensive RODENT damage!!!!!! The water damage was only in 1 of the 2 unites we rented but the RODENT damage was in BOTH!!!!. We took care to actually purchase our own moving blankets to protect the furniture and the RODENTS made several nests in them with the stuffing from our furniture and the moving blankets. When I walked to the main office to report the RODENT INFESTATION and WATER DAMAGE I was met by a manager who listened but had an excuse for everything. CLEARLY NO OWNERSHIP of the RODENTS OR WATER DAMAGE was going to be made by the management. The movers were very surprised I did not get more upset at the treatment of the MANAGER. Now in fairness the management will tell you to read your contract that says they basically have no responsibility no matter how badly infested with RODENTS or how much WATER DAMAGE occurs. The management actually said they have had no reports of RODENTS or WATER DAMAGE! When we showed the MANAGER the WATER DAMAGE and RODENT INFESTATION he asked if I had picture of our furniture prior to being placed in storage. At this point I said I can see by your attitude where this is going and walked away. If I wanted WATER DAMAGE and RODENT INFESTATION I would have kept our belongings in our pole barn and saved nearly $5,000 in rental fees. I did wait to send this to see if the MANAGEMENT responded in anyway. THEY DID NOT! WARNING!!!! STAY AWAY!!

I was concerned about my books and photos when I found this place. I recently retrieved them, and not only were they undamaged by humidity, but very little dust was on any of my stuff. The carts are very helpful and the indoor loading/ unloading area is fabulous in inclement weather. HOWEVER, one or both of those doors seems to be terminally inoperable. I have been too the facility about 6 times in the last 2 years and side from the day I moved in, the doors haven't been fully functioning at any other visit. Also, I understand not having climate control in the "garage" area, but a fan of some sort is desperately needed when the weather is hot or muggy. It was hotter in there than outside this week. Staff - IS there a staff here? I've occasionally seen the woman who checks the storage area, but no one is EVER in the office. In fact, the office is always locked when I've been there. During business hours. Value - I knew the rate i started at was for a limited time. I expected one or two rent increases, but not several. Certainly not too the point that it doubled in less than 2 years. I wouldn't have even been upset at the price IF THEY HAD BEEN UPFRONT ABOUT IT. I know a couple people who also have units, the same size as mine, who haven't had any increase in rates and have been there over a year. The rate increases were not only unpredictable in timing but also in amount. Recommend? Yes, with caveats. The facility for storage i would recommend. The business practices... I would warn others away from.

The short story: Zero stars…read more I rented at iStorage in 2022 and then again in 2024-2025. If I could, I would give it zero stars. Personally, I would never rent at this location or any owned by NSA ever again. If you are looking for a good storage facility in the area, I found one within 15 minutes of iStorage with superior service, security, and cleanliness for essentially the same price. They even had a coffee station in the office, which was open and occupied by an employee. My expectations have been lowered by my experience at iStorage. The long story: When I first rented in 2022, the experience was fine. The manager at the store seemed experienced and was present during business hours. When I rented again in 2024, I rented my unit online. I couldn't get into my unit because no one was working there and the unit required a key fob. I found out the store didn't even have a manager at the time. In the summer of 2025, I needed additional temporary storage space due to an upcoming move. Here is how it went. - Rented a storage unit. Went to put stuff in the unit. The unit was locked and was not able to be rented. Had to postpone my moving day. - Manager offered to give me a different unit that was the same size. It was smaller. - Paid more for a unit that was larger than I needed. Went to check it out the same evening we rented it because we were moving the next day. It was full of stuff. Postponed moving day again. - Called iStorage the same night that we rented the unit to ask for a refund. The supervisor told me that someone would reach out in the coming week and I should expect a refund within the week. It has been 10 months. I have spoken to countless employees, called the company dozens of times, I still have no refund. There were other negligent and sketchy actions on the part of the company. Such as a manager who gave me his personal cell number, which was completely disconnected two months later. The lights in the building my unit was in didn't work for roughly the last 3+ months I was there and they reduced the security by eliminating the key fob system. The one redeeming quality that iStorage has is that their "storage specialists" are well trained on how to deescalate on the phone, but they really can't do anything to help, which is frustrating.

Minneapolis moving services are some of the most expensive anywhere I've experienced. I hope that simply means that MN companies pay their labor well. We paid $1365 + $180 tip (optional, but come on) for a 3-man crew at $260/hr (2-hour minimum), and we obviously also provided snacks and drinks (they declined breakfast). For comparison, in San Francisco it was $250/hr for 5 men. The rate was with both the weekday discount and winter pricing. Weekend would have been $285/hr for 3 men, and $345 for 4 men. There was no trip fee. Robert, in particular was incredible; he moved a 6 drawer dresser down a tight stairwell alone. They needed to remove the front door at one point, but did so without issue. They also were happy to use our own furniture pads and plastic wrap (leftover from a cross-country move). At one point, they had to back the huge truck through the alley on icy ground, and had no problems. Also, it was easy to provide them inventory by email, and easy to reach them by phone. Lots of moving companies were annoying to contact, which is partly why we chose this one. One a few minor issues: one piece of furniture was shedding pieces of wood. I think they were reinforcements put on by previous owners. I didn't even know they were there, and it doesn't seem to have affected the furniture. They also forgot a couple of items in the yard, including a big smoker we had to move on our own. It's partly my fault, I told them we were good to go. Also, we were made to sign a lot of paperwork, and at various points it was for things like "you confirm that nothing is broken and everything has arrived" and, like, it's weeks later and I'm still unpacking, there is no way I would have known for sure. It's fine, because so far we have had no issues, but if someone did have issues it might feel like being strong-armed via contract. The guys in the truck were just doing their jobs, so it's the process that is problematic more than anything. We would use these guys again!
