OMG!! I'm obsessed. After going to another hair salon for a few years, my regular stylist left, so I needed to find someone new. Stressful times! Tried a few people that were overpriced and disappointing until my massage therapist recommended Ross. Such an inclusive and welcoming environment at Above Ground, and Ross did an incredible job on my hair. My regular stylist injured her wrist and I am going out of town next week and need a haircut. Someone recommended here and I was thrilled. Tim stayed a little later than he usually does to accommodate my drive in from Broomfield and it was worth the trip! The place is adorable and Tim spent a lot of time talking to me about what I wanted, feeling my hair, and making me comfortable before he started. After 7 hours and over $600 spent, I left with frizzy, dry and orange hair. I am a brown girl with black hair. I asked for chocolate highlights and I left with orange/red chunky highlights. I have never felt so ugly before! I asked for a refund of any sort and was told that they don't do refunds. I was told I was going to get a call from the owner Ashe but as of today 04/15 I have not heard anything. The appointment was on 04/08 and I went back in on 04/09 to have them fix my hair and left with scratches on the face and sore hair. When I went back, I guess she was not happy that I came back so she used the brush to dry my hair and smacked my face several times. Im having to spend another $200-300 to fix my hair and they don't give a shit about their customers or their money. So, if you decide to get your hair done here, make sure you don't ask for Olivia and maybe don't get your hair done here. Edit: after posting this review I got a call from the owner! I moved to Denver in July and tried to find a good barber shop and was delighted to see that it was LGBTQ specializing! Unfortunately after trying this place twice, I ended up being disappointed with the job they did and their service on both occasions. The first barber didn't know how to cut curled despite it being listed as his specialty! After washing my hair, he took a towel back and forth and just started rubbing my head. Anyone with curls knows that you shouldn't do that. I then decided to book with a different barber and was also let down by how they treated me during the cut. On both occasions I went in they were just a little bit cold. I wished it went better, and maybe other people have better experiences. I'm giving them 2 stars because I don't think they can't redeem themselves, but since I found a better barber closer to where I live, I won't be trying them again. read more

I've been trying to find a hair salon here in Denver for the longest time, and finally stumbled upon Above Ground Hair. I made an appointment with Cheyenne, told them in advance exactly what I wanted, and was even able to add additional services to my appointment after the fact. I am so impressed with the work Cheyenne did to my hair, and I feel so much happier with this new style. The salon was incredibly welcoming, I felt really comfortable and welcome for the several hours I was there, and had wonderful conversations as well. I will definitely be coming here again, and cannot recommend it enough to people looking for vivid colors and a great haircut. read more

They say your stylist becomes your therapist. A "hairapist" if you will. That was certainly true for my previous whom I had gone to for seven years before his untimely passing. So as you can imagine I was feeling a bit lost and uneasy about finding a new one, as well as hurting from losing a friend. Enter Ashe. Not only did Ashe make me feel incredibly welcome, they totally got where I was coming from and gained my trust not only as my new hairapist but as a friend. I've gotten my haircut in so many cities but Ross here is amazing! His haircuts and bald fades are the best I've ever gotten and he's super personable. I've only received two haircuts from him and it feels like I've been going to him for years. As long as I'm in Denver and he's cutting hair, this is the place I'll be going to. I have finally found "The One." After a near 5 year search for a stylist I can trust with ALL of my "hair ADD" needs, I am happy to say that the hair gods have provided. Evan at Above Ground is an amazing person, stylist, and conversationalist. I went in after bleaching and frying the ever-loving crap out of my hair, confident that his Instagram photos of creative and edgy styles meant he had a capable and precise hand, as well as a solid creative vision. I was not disappointed. As a matter of fact, I was EXTREMELY impressed with his steady hand, his communication in making sure I got what I wanted, and his ability to understand my hair history. I feel like so many stylists go in hacking away immediately without discussing what your hair goals REALLY are, but Evan spoke with me extensively before picking up the scissors, gave me several options, and thereafter took his time with my hair. It came out PERFECTLY. I will definitely be returning time and time again. Who knows - I might even let someone else bleach my hair next time ;) As for the salon itself, this is a place for everyone. Girls, gays, and theys - this is our space. All are welcome and that is not simply a sign on the door, but it is evident in each stylist's demeanor, the atmosphere, the music, and the clientele.
