It depends on who you get…read more I've been going to this BioLife location for 2 months now, and I have had nothing but positive, professional interactions with the staff. They all know how to keep a professional demeanor and attitude while performing donation tasks. Today was the first time I had a bad experience donating. The technician that was responsible for administering the needle maintained a professional demeanor as stated above, however was neither confident or competent in her job. There was no line at all when I went in to donate, but it still took her 45 minutes to get me started. While I was waiting I noticed that she had to switch arms with the donor next to me, so when she started working on me I watched how she manipulated the needle. This technician had zero confidence putting the needle in my arm and it looked a little odd how she placed it. Sure enough turned out to be a bubble, and they were gonna switch me to the other arm, but I had to leave soon so I just asked to leave. The nurse that pulled me aside to make sure I didn't pass out gave me some snacks, and had me sit for 30 minutes. I only lost a few Milo grams of blood, and the bubble took place during the saline flow. Right before I left though someone else had been pricked incorrectly, and they told him he lost so much blood he couldn't donate until after waiting 8 weeks. So it really depends on who you get and what experience they have with this line of work. For 2 months this was the only problem I've had at this location.

I never went to PCCI after 8:00 a.m., to avoid the wait, but at Talecris, even midday/late afternoon, I've been in and out in as little as an hour and never more than a couple hours. Bear in mind, that is with an appointment (highly recommended) and does not include the first visit. The movies and shows they play are sometimes lacking, but you can always bring a book. The staff are chill too. If it's your first time, call first and make an appointment.

Each time there is a procedural error, I have returned because I know that my blood is making a difference. But, amid the Covid-19 worries, and after getting emails saying that the Red Cross is protecting donors, I feel it's necessary to let people know that the providers here often have poor standards that put donors at risk. They often touch unsanitary surfaces, such as keyboards, drawer handles, pens, BP cuffs, stethoscopes, your arm, your chair handle, the fridge, other peoples blood donation bags, and more. Then, without changing their gloves, they begin what should be a sterile procedure on you. The reason I am finally writing about it is because last time, the staff member clearly had a cold. She was constantly touching her nose and wiping her nose on her hand throughout our interactions. She didn't wash her hands at any point, including before grabbing the gloves. You should always disinfect your hands before touching gloves, otherwise you get all of your germs on the outside of the glove - the part that touches me and the open wound on my arm.

Do they stop to consider if this college kid is getting sick and trying to sound healthy for 1 hr to make a buck? I don't think his plasma is able to " replenish in 24-48 hrs " as the online articles suggest. I'm certain with his genetic inheritance that it takes him longer to heal than most. Grifols Plasma doesn't care if he's getting sick, now sick down in his lungs with spiraling respiratory/asthma issues. They don't care that he can't go see my family for Thanksgiving after finally coming home from his LDS mission. They just want to think he looks like a healthy college kid and make a buck off of him!

While I was a little ticked to find out that there wasn't a class in the SLC area in all of March, I hoofed it out to Provo to their Red Cross class. The facility isn't much to write home about, but they have all the equipment to get top-flight training. Their training is "blended", meaning you spend most of the time learning online, then you come to class to put into practice what you've learned. The training was conducted by Ted Bisping, who did a good job not just with the material, but "real-life" scenarios he had personally experience. We spent half the class in expanding on the basics, the second practicing scenarios. Of course, there was work on the CPR dummies (clean, shiny, and brand-spanking new!) You really have to put this part in action because there's a lot of physicality when giving around 100 compressions a minute! For the First Aid, we worked with partners on treating severe wounds. Bloody good training, so-to-speak. They also had a baby / child CPR section that used baby dummies. I was also a little ticked the thing was scheduled for an hour, and it ran 90+. After getting out of the stuffy room and home and getting my certificate, I was a little more pleased with the whole experience. Move over Fray, the Red Cross is the best place to learn How To Save A Life.

Once finished with the questionnaire you have to wait again to get blood draw, weighed, temperature, blood pressure, etc. then wait again... for a card, to go into the 3 different colored sections. The first 6 plasma draws went well. The last 2 plasma draws were a disaster. I have a huge bruise from two weeks ago. Thursday, the phlebotomist wasn't able to get a blood draw. I've always been told that I have really good veins. Thursday, the phlebotomist tried to change the needle into my other arm but I had the card which said only the left arm. Then she tried telling me that she noticed my veins didn't look good. This was a total lie as I've never had a problem with getting blood draws or plasma before. And I saw the nurse prior to being seated in her area.
