In January, 2022, Able Windows replaced a "dated" window on the door of my garage (1947) with a more modern product and the result was great! Minimal repair / painting was required, and now the door is much more durable. But the true "miracle" was replacing a pane of a double paned kitchen window that had been damaged when I had the house power washed and painted in 2007. I thought it would be very complicated, not to mention expensive. Thus, I "let it be" for 14 years. Able's rep. explained what was involved, and I had it done. It's like a whole new setting by my kitchen table out into my backyard. They were efficient, reasonable, and very personable. I recommend them highly! read more

A Continuing Nightmare - Job Abandonment & Property Damage Able was contracted to replace two windows on our property on the border of Pacifica. The initial contact was a pleasant experience, and the staff (Cynthia, and the owner Alan) were personable. Then, the crew showed up. They broke the stucco on the home, and ripped the protective netting on the windows. They then claimed that the work would cost thousands of dollars more to complete ($20,000), and that the window installation would require the complete re-stuccoing of the homes south facing wall. (This for a job valued at less than $3000, with signed contracts in place). When we indicated that we were unclear as to whether we wanted to re-stucco our entire wall (not something we had contracted for), the crew abandoned the work site, with a damaged window, exposed wood, and exposed porous cement. The images are attached. Prior to the crew abandoning the work site, we could overhear Alan (the owner) on the phone with the foreman confirming knowledge that the porous cement which had been applied to the property was "crap", indicating it's in-effectiveness in protecting the property from damage by the elements. The following day we were informed by the city Building Inspector that Able Window should have competed the job as contracted, and that performing a re-stucco of the wall was IN NO WAY required for installation of the windows. The inspector was fairly candid in their assessment that Able Window seemed to be trying to get more money out of the job. They also noted that the exposed surfaces left by the Able Window crew were not adequate to protect the house from weather, and represented bad workmanship (see images for reference). Able Window refused to fix the damage they caused to the walls and window, without first receiving a complete waiver of any of their liability, for any damage they might have caused. We are now exploring legal action. We're aware that Able Window has a high rating on Yelp, and it is difficult to believe that there aren't many customers who've had similar experiences to ours. Particularly for a company that has been in business for more than a decade, it is difficult to imagine that just 30 would write reviews. Our only explanation is that negative reviews may have been removed by some means. If there are any customers, who have experienced similar issues, please reach out to us. We are open to the possibility of working together, to protect future customers, and exploring joint legal action. read more

I wanted to share with you a bad experience I had with Able Windows. I called to have someone come out and do an estimate for patio doors that would lead onto a newly built deck. I spoke to Cynthia and Alan came out to meet with me. So far so good. I explained to Alan that my contractor would be preparing and finishing the area and that I just wanted to buy the doors, panels and have someone drop it into place. Alan began using industry terms to explain what was necessary and I told him I understood nothing about it and what would be great if he could make the time to stop by and briefly speak to my contractor so that everyone was on the same page. Alan and I had a laugh when it was clear he was talking over my head and agreed to meet my contractor to just communicate a few things. I was very clear, however, that he should check with me 1st as I would hate for him to waste his time as the contractor is not here everyday, all day or may be doing something that was impossible to break away from. I was directed by Alan to go to the store front and see an example of the door. While there, I reiterated to Cynthia that we are just waiting for Alan to speak to my contractor and the importance of coordinating this brief meeting so Alan doesn't take time from his schedule and not find my contractor at the house. Everyone seemed to understand that whenever Alan was going to be in my neighborhood, he would reach out to me so I could confirm whether the contractor is currently at the house and availble. Instead, Alan apparently just showed up at my house while everyone was at work and after getting no answer at the door, called my contractor as I had provided him his name and number when we met. My contractor was pouring cement at that moment hence could not meet with Alan. I guess this irritated Alan and he explained the matter to Cynthia. Cynthia meanwhile was supposed to get back to me just a couple days before the thanksgiving holidays but I never got a call back from her to arrange payment and final hardware choices. After the holidays, I called Cynthia and asked where we were at since I had not heard back from her. Cynthia told me in a curt and officious tone, "Alan went to your house and got no answer at the door... Then he called your contractor and was told he could not take time away from the cement he was pouring" and did not make himself available. Cynthia reiterated how busy Alan was and how "We are not in the business of coaching anyone on how to prep an area" and, "You have the dimensions so its your decision." I tried explaining to her why I was so clear about coordinating the brief discussion that would have been between Alan and my contractor but she remained officious and essentially blew me off. Her last words to me were, "So, did you want me to prepare a final contract or not?" Stunned, I said to her, "Well, I will have to think about it." She replied, "Okay," and hung up. You see, they make less money when they don't take the whole project and you better believe they made that clear. They call this a resale and I guess it wasn't worthy of their time. I'll let you be the judge of whether this was good business practice. read more

For $175.00 cash, a previous window contractor (Rich's Glass & Window, 214 Del Monte Avenue, South San Francisco, CA 94080-2220 (650) 589-8348, (650) 583-0245, (650) 271-2852) replaced a 39" x 58- 1/2" window in a slightly oblique window frame ( 1/2"-off parallelogram). From his on-site truck, he cut a square shaped replacement window, thus leaving a small air gap. On Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at 4:47 PM I provided Allen from Able Window with the city of my rental property, a description of what happened with a previous contractor (cut a square shape), and described the window frame and shape. Allen and I arrived at an understanding about the type of window frame. He understood the size of the window 39" x 58- 1/2" and that the window frame is slightly oblique ( 1/2"-off parallelogram). I chose the option of non-tempered glass. His estimate to replace the window was $175.00. I told him that his estimate was accurate; he provided me with the same estimate from the previous contractor. I gave Allen the address of my rental property and the phone number of my tenant. He said he will call my tenant to make an appointment to replace the window. On Friday, February 17, 2012, I called my tenant about a dishwasher problem. My tenant told me he has not received a phone call from Able Window to replace the broken window. I left a message with Able Window to remind them to make an appointment with my tenant. On Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 10:48 AM Cynthia from Able Window called to provide a quote of $249.00. She said the price of the quote went up because they didn't know the type of window frame and can't afford to go out to find out, they didn't know that the address is in San Mateo, the window frame is an unusual shape, and they don't have standard single pane window in stock. I let Cynthia know of the $175 quote from the previous contractor and that all her unknowns were known by Allen before he provided the estimate of $175.00. Considering Able Window did not provide new information to raise the price of the quote, the $175.00 quote was accurate, and that my tenant and I had not received a phone call from Able Window in three weeks until I called them, I told Cynthia that I will report this to Yelp unless they replace the window for $175.00. We just had Able Window replace a side door at the garage. Alan explained well what was involved and why the methods they would use were important. The door did arrive later than predicted, but that seems to be an issue presently with many things one might order. In fact, it worked out perfectly, since the rains would have made doing the work earlier impossible anyway. The workmanship was very good, and the result is superior to what was done previously by a general contractor. The price was about half of what a national manufacturer quoted for a similar outcome. read more

There customer service is absolutely horrible nasty attitude, you leave a message they may call you back they may not. Using a local company is a great way to support your community, so it's awesome when the company is among the best. I found Able to be professional, knowledgeable, honest, and responsive. Alan did a consultation and outlined the options for my new patio door, and then Cynthia sent estimates for both options. Once I chose an option and the custom door arrived from Milgard, we scheduled the work. The crew completed the work in a day. Alan removed the old door and installed the new one. Ken brought materials in and did some prep, finish, and cleanup work. Alan explained the challenges of getting the door and seals properly seated because the building itself is out of level due to construction quality and age. Despite these challenges, he worked it all out via a few well-placed shims and the door's built-in adjustment screws. He even returned a few weeks later at my request to make several more minor adjustments. Also, the company asked Milgard to come out and replace a section of weatherstripping that I assume was damaged during shipping or transport. Throughout, the crew was cheerful, friendly, and very detail oriented. Able is a delight to work with. Super impressed with these guys (Alan was the guy who came out to our place). We've got some leaky windows due to a cheap install from the previous owners. Instead of pushing to sell us new windows, which we probably need, he helped figure out a strategy that we could better seal them ourselves and save significant money. Professional, prompt, courteous, and reasonably priced to boot! We had decided rather quickly to put our house on the market, so we didn't leave much time to replace a broken window. I called Able Window (based on yelp! reviews), and someone (Allan) came out the following morning Wednesday, explained my options, an gave me an estimate on the replacement. I told him that the first open house was the following Saturday. The new window was ordered and replaced in less than a week, days before our first open house! During the install, we pointed out 3 other windows that had condensation in them (= broken seals). They gave us a quote that day. We hesitated to order them, but then went through with it knowing it would be best for the sale of the house. Despite Able Window (Cynthia) trying to work magic to get those windows in before the Saturday open house, they arrived the following Monday and were installed immediately. BEAUTIFUL WORK! In Sept. 2014, Able Window installed 14 windows and one patio door (from Milgard's Tuscany line) at my home. All components were installed as 'new construction' (not retrofit), which required new wood trim and some stucco work. The install went smoothly, including the unusual 2nd story windows (an 8+ foot tall trapizod window and a 10 foot long slider window) and lowering a window for egress. The new finishing (stucco patching, wood trim, and inside window) perfectly matches the existing finishing. The installers were very polite and professional and did their best to keep the drywall dust to a minimum. They clearly took pride in their work. The entire job took about 8 days. Replacing all the windows in our home was a big project. Alan and the office staff answered all of our questions/concerns and ensured that the project ran smoothly. We had quotes from other window companies. Able wasn't the fastest to provide quotes and they didn't seem interested in just making a "quick sale". And they provided their own scaffolding without an additional charge. (Other companies wanted $1200+ if they determined, at the time of install, that scaffolding was needed.) Able Windows installed a beautiful balcony door for us in 2013. Recently, we started having problems opening the door. Alan came yesterday and installed new stainless steel hinges. The door opens like a dream. Alan explained that we will need to use a lanolin based spray on the hinges in the future to keep them in good working order. There was no charge for the repairs.
