A regional airport often leaves a lot to be desired from those who are used to larger, more functional airports. This entirely fits the bill in my experience. The airport is small, with "four gates" but it only seems like one or two are ever operational at a single time. It's two stories, with most of the airport on the second floor, including a Chick Fil A that never seems to be open, two TSA lines that aren't clearly marked to tell you what's pre-check and what's not, and escalators that seem to be hit or miss. The rental car places are on the first floor, but seem generally understaffed. Then again, the whole airport seems to be understaffed most of the time, but they get away with it since there only seems to be like 4 flights coming in or leaving on any given day. read more

Due to being understaffed they did not check our luggage onto the flight. We were told some story about unloading the plane and then getting back with us. Then after waiting for 20+ minutes at the counter we were told that we wouldn't not be able to make the flight because our luggage was too big ... Note, we arrived and were waiting at the single terminal this airport offers 50 - 65 minutes before our flights departure. The best part is after being blown off ... an arrogant young worker with a nose ring proceeded to smile and laugh at my family while tell us that we wouldn't make the flight while exiting for her shift. I am truly disturbed by how she could revel in others disparate. She even stated this happens ALL THE TIME. Our company employees and my family will from now on only fly privately from this location. Horrible experience. My plane leaves at 6:10pm. I arrived at 5:16 and there was no one there to check my bags. Then a guy shows up and said they closed the counter and go to the line and they would check my bags. The blond lady with the badge that says supervisor said they can't check my bags, but I can go out and find smaller bags and come back. ( where am I going to go to find smaller bags) Stated she deals with this 50 times per day and you could tell she had no intention of being helpful. She also mentioned that we're not in Los Angeles. I asked to speak to the American Airlines supervisor. The blond lady went to get her whispering to her and the supervisor said I have to be there 45 minutes early before the flight. I told her I was and she said that she can't help either and we have to rebook our flight. They could have been helpful but chose not to. absolute nightmare my flight boarding time is the morning 5:11 am time,(i arrived at 4:30am)i have flown for over a decade and been to airports across the country and outside of america and have NEVER not one time heard of "closed bag check". Please American airlines. Close this airport. Horrible people. Everytine i take a flight. Delayed. Today. I was delayed from Dallas. Arrive and retrieved my truck. 1 day and 36 minutes. I must pay for 2 full days. This sucks. Called and talked to Don Green. Administration at the Abilene airport. That is their rate structure. Instead of 1 day and so many hours. Well, it's an airport in a medium size city. Small, so it's easy to get around. Has a small restaurant for slightly overpriced good food. The lady at Moose's Cafe is really nice. Going through security is pretty easy. All parking is covered but there's a nice charge for this convenience. No gripes. Over and out! read more

Quite literally the worst airport I have ever dealt with. I would suggest never flying out of this airport. It is better and more convenient to drive to Dallas or to your destination. They cancel flights on a whim with little to no excuse. Weather was the "issue" and the TAF was literally reading 330013. Oh and the plane was on the tarmac. I have heard a slew of issues to employees leaving, locking people in the terminal to complete and total lack of customer service. This airport needs new management or needs to be closed down. read more

This is a good airport in general... Getting through security isn't that bad and checking in. It's flying out of Abilene, we were going to catch a flight out of DFW but we missed it by two hours. Perfect weather and it wasn't busy. This airport in general isn't that bad. I would like it if they did add some Continental flights to Houston. I have flown to Abilene (ABI) 10+ times. When you travel frequently for business, you start appreciating the small things PRO: -- Easy security. Never had to wait more than 15 minutes to get through security. Most of time, 5 minutes and you are through. -- Easy access to rental cars. It used to be a pain in the butt having to take a shuttle but now it's a very short walk form Hertz counter to the car you get to abuse for a few days. -- FREE WI-FI~!~!~! Free wi-fi helps greatly when your flight is delayed. -- Enough outlets around for your to power your laptop or charge your phone. Again, it helps greatly when your flight is delayed. CON: -- If you are hungry, forget it. Nothing but a soda vending machine once you get through security. There is a restaurant before security but I rarely see it open. -- Flights seem to get delayed quite often from ABI. read more

I have been to two tiny airports in my life: Thailand and Abilene. The one in Thailand had a thatched roof and they drove us and our luggage about 40 feet from the runway to the baggage claim. Even though the airport in Abilene is decidedly less island-like than the airport in Thailand, it feels just as far away from the places I am used to being. In the case of Thailand this is good, but I can't say that I have the same feelings about the Abilene airport. So what's the problem? Let me start with a short story: on the way out of town, we were turning in our rental car and I said to my colleague: "we are leaving from Gate 3" and the agent from the car company said, "it's pretty much all the same gate area." I thought he was just joking ... that is until I got to the Airport and saw that he was not joking AT ALL. Let it be noted that 98% of the time I have NO problems with cozy gate areas or small towns, but there is one problem at the Abilene airport that colors the rest of my experience. There is NO food at ALL in the gate area. Why do I care? Well, you know how the policy of TSA is that you are obviously a terrorist (and not just a thirsty human) if you try to bring water through security? You know how the solution to this is to pay $2 and kill the planet by buying a bottle of water. Well, this is NOT an option in Abilene. There is a soda machine, but if it is broken (like it was the day we flew out) the only liquid refreshment available is sips of lukewarm water from a drinking fountain. It's true that the wait for security is rather short and the rental car companies are basically at the front door. But in Maslow's hierarchy of needs food - and water - definitely takes precedence over automobiles and short TSA lines. That being said, if you *have* to fly American Airlines (which is the only reason that I fly this airline) and you are going in the vicinity of Abiline, then this is your airport. With this in mind, you can look forward to easy access to rental cars, but I highly recommend that you not be hungry or thirsty on your way out of town. Luckily, it's only an hour's flight to Dallas. read more

Arriving was a bit of a pain -- our plane was late, so I think they had less than a full staff of baggage handlers. As a result, valet bags were unloaded with regular bags, completely defeating the purpose of gate checking. Then, we waited more than 30 minutes from our bag. (Keep in mind that this airport is tiny -- MAYBE five gates.) A coworker on the flight arriving 20 minutes after mine never saw his bag come out on the carousel, and when he asked the airport personnel about it, they disappeared out the door for 2 minutes, and promptly came back with his bag. Apparently they didn't bother to even put it on the carousel. Renting from Avis was smooth, and I appreciated that it was less than a 5 minute walk from counter to car. The same can't be said for Budget, which requires a bus ride from the airport to the car lot. (I understand Enterprise may be the same way.) For an airport the size of Abilene, that's a little mind blowing. Departing from this airport is a dream -- TSA only has a single line, but I didn't have anyone in front of me. I was kept waiting for a bit, however, while the TSA agents had some sort of mysterious meeting with one another and shut down the line. Probably the worst part is the lack of food in the gate area, which left me absolutely starving. Also, note that there's a serious dearth of plugs -- look behind the wooden faux-wagon and under the cast iron 4-top. There's 4 brass covered plugs in each location. Finally, the wifi is free, but it moves like molasses on a snowy day. read more

THEY NEVER LEAVE ON TIME!!! Avoid flying through here at all costs. My flight has never left on time causing me to miss my connecting flight. I have talked with friends and they have the same experience. They also have about 30 minutes to get your bag out of the plane so plan accordingly. I wonder why such a small airport has so many delays. Seems like a problem that they could easily fix. I guarantee if you have a flight out of Abilene that there will be some kind of problem with the airplane so you will leave late. read more

This is a great little airport to fly out of. Problem is not the airport, but the only airline (Envoy Air / American Eagle). I've had a delay or cancellation on 3 out of my last 3 flights from here. I travel for a living and can't have this happen every week. This is a real limiting factor if you plan on living in Abilene and travel frequently. read more

I guess if you have to fly into ABI then do so , but I'd rather drive from Dallas to Abi . This airport does everything slow ... it's a small airport , and the staff are friendly , but they move very slow . Going through security there was only one entrance and the pre checked line is taken first regardless if you've been standing in line for 10 mins and they just walked up . Just very slow . Abilene Regional is a work in progress it is much better than it was just a few years ago, covered parking (a bit over priced), one carrier American Airlines. It is very hard to get a flight out of Abilene always delays, many times I've seen it booked full and have to wait on the next aircraft. Not really impress with the TSA & security there but we wont tell the Terrorist that information. For a community the size of Abilene Texas I'm glad there is an Airport. read more

Having spent a lot of time recently flying out of regional airports I was down right angry with my last experience flying out of ABI. I was leaving for a 10 day business trip and was scheduled for their 9:35 flight out. Now, being familiar with smaller airports I knew that generally TSA doesn't take a long time, and found that to be true here. I think from shoe off to shoe on time was less than 90 seconds. Then I look at the gate and there are a LOT of people in line...hmmm.... Turns out my plane is having mechanical problems and it's going to be until 10:30 when it gets fixed. Alright, fine....I'm going to miss my connection (since EVERYONE has a connection) but I'm still able to make it to my east coast destination that evening. Well, 10:30 comes and goes and now gets pushed back until AT LEAST 2pm (ended up just being cancelled). Not to mention that in this time another plane has come and left. Now, do they offer to bus us to Dallas, or use another plane or anything? Nope - come back tomorrow. Having a delayed or cancelled flight is a big deal in a single airline/1 destination airport. Fortunately (?) I live here so I was able to go back home, but they ruined my travel plans and I missed an entire day on an already packed itinerary. And as far their Wi-Fi - I found it only to work on about 3 seats on the far left side of the airport and 1-2 bars at that. I'm planning on driving to DFW or Love Field next time. read more

Do not waste your time with this airport. It is faster and far easier to drive to Dallas than deal with this place. Don't plan on anyone being at the ticket counter, they are only there between flights. We missed our flight because nobody was at check in for twenty five minutes. Once someone came up she said put us on standby for the next flight but couldn't figure out how to get our bag check fees taken off (we have the credit card) and should never have bag fees. I paid it to not have to deal with her, she barely spoke English. After that we proceeded to TSA which was also not open until between flights. When going through security you can imagine the surprise when my ticket had pre-check (which we have and I put on the reservation) but my husbands did not. This place is an absolute joke, drive to Dallas and fly Southwest it will save you the headache! read more

Too much work for such a little staff. Both terminals were operational but sat on the runway for an hour because an aircraft was having technical difficulties and we were scheduled for that terminal. Not much air traffic but, uncalled for. TSA is ran by one person, to scan the bags and check id's and walk you threw the security check point. It's a joke. Just drive to Dallas. read more

We flew from Abilene regional airport to DFW and a man by the name Johnathon mis tagged our luggage when we arrived at DFW trip had been cancelled due to weather from previous day . After returning home with NO luggage and several phone calls stating my luggage was at Abilene Airport Johnathon refused to help me locate my luggage. I asked him if he could help with the location of luggage his response was"No your luggage is in Dallas I tagged them for Dallas only !" He never once let me explain the whole situation just kept telling me he wasn't helping me. After another phone call from AA luggage department I was told it was at airport 2nd trip that day Johnathon once again refused to help me locate my luggage !!! I was videoing him refuse me so in return he called the police !!! Very unprofessional and very disrespectful!!! Abilene Airport AA employees need to realize the customer is the one that pays their check!!! Very very very disappointed !!! read more

I would give 0 stars for this airport if I could. Most unorganized airport I've ever been to and they have no excuse since they are SO SMALL!! The employees barely know what they are doing, what should take 10 minutes to do simple tasks they take almost an hour!!!! Employees are unprofessional, and could care less about your canceled flights (this airport is notorious for canceled flights), had to beg for a hotel pass when they canceled one of my flights and it was like pulling teeth with the woman at the counter. Very unprofessional, very undertrained, and took way too long for SIMPLE TASKS! Worst airport I've ever been too. Currently sitting on a plane, have been just sitting here FOR THREE HOURS, because of how UNORGANIZED AND UNPROFESSIONAL THESE PEOPLE ARE! I will never ever ever come here again. I fly regularly out of DFW and ORD. I can get through DFW and ORD security 100x faster than ABI. My gosh, it takes forever. The TSA agent took my purse out and said, "I see you have coins in your purse - let me shake your purse and break up the coins." Then I waited six minutes why she looked at the screen. Also, for the LOVE of all things good, how about putting in a vending machine (with food) in the gate area so when we are delayed we can have something to eat - peanuts, anything! All they have is a vending machine with water and soft drinks, no food. And, by the way, there is no vending machine on the other side. read more

This is the worst airport I've ever been unfortunate enough to use. Came in on Saturday at 730pm and my bags didn't make my connection in Dulles airport. When I attempt pickup they tell me my bag will arrive at 1053. There is no shuttle service so had to uber to hotel. Then they tell me I'll have to pick it up myself since there is no service for luggage delivery! At 11:04 they leave a message and tell me I only have 23 min to get back to airport before they close to pickup luggage. Of course I was not going to make it! Then in morning went to pick it up and no attendant at baggage claim! Had to schlep around to find someone to help me. I go upstairs to AA counter and had to holler out for someone to come to counter. The only pleasant person through this fiasco was the attendant that got my bag out of the baggage claim lockup. Hope to NEVER have to come back here. Customer service all time low at big fat zero! U guys are awful! read more

the staff at this airport is awful..we arrived at the airport 30 mins before our plane was to leave..it was the first flight of the day..we did over sleep..we get to the airport there'a noone to help us. we had plenty of time to make our flight..but instead the staff delayed us and made us miss the flight. my boyfriends suitcase is too big to check at the gate..okay fine..lets go check it..instead they made us wait thirty mins to check the bag all the while being completely rude. they made a half a day of traveling a full day during Christmas at that. American Airlines is an awful airline..on the way home they didn't tell us until MIDNIGHT that we weren't leaving dallas but that's a whole different story..I'd rather spend the money to drive to Dallas than to spend four hundred more dollars then need be flying American. American abilene to Tampa 849 two people. South west round trip from Dallas to Tampa 600..40 dollars in gas and a hotel stay..yeah cheaper than flying out of abilene..oh and free parking at the hotel..I'd give zero stars if I could.. read more
