But that's how shopping here goes: check the inventory frequently, cross your fingers that they have the right size or enough of the thing you need, and accept that even if it doesn't work for you it is going to a better home and not the dump. They've got inventory of all kinds, but I'd say primarily it's cabinets, sinks and tubs, lighting, wood, doors and windows. They do have a website with some online inventory and you can always call ahead to see if something is still in stock. I especially appreciate their education opportunities. I've taken a few classes about building tables, and a little free library, and I'm signed up for my next class with them about tiling!

Their order accuracy is almost always correct, and when it has been off they promptly correct it. They have bailed me out many of times on my own mistakes by shipping or sending trucks with little to no notice. The salesman that I currently work with is Matt and he is great. Price quotes or order confirmations come back quickly. Not only do I find their customer service to be pleasant and quick, but their material quality is hands down the best. All my installers prefer it, and they offer a longer warranty than any other supplier I am aware of. Buying all American made products from them is a huge selling point for my business!

Today I needed 1x 8 cedar, and caps for the deck posts. First stop was Lowes, the closest retailer to our house. The boards were so-so, and the caps were not of the quality that I was looking for. Home Depot was second closest. Boards were okay, but again the caps were inferior, and after getting the highly annoying 'bing-bong' security camera warning about 4 times for my highly suspicious act of walking down an isle, I left happily empty handed. Mr. Plywood is a bit far from home, but I decided to venture there anyway. WHAT a difference! The boards I found are far superior in quality, and EXACTLY the same price as the big box stores. The post caps were the brand I was looking for, and $4.00 less per cap than I found them on line. When buying multiples, that $4.00 difference adds up fast! The service was friendly, personal, and they know their stuff. Without so much as one 'bing-bong' warning with a security camera staring at my face, I got what I needed at a reasonable price quickly and efficiently. I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Plywood. The store is fun and has just about everything you would need in a pinch. Customer service is awesome, the young person helps load all these bags of product into my SUV and when I tried to give him a tip, he refused, saying they don't except tips. These are pretty small stores, yet they somehow managed to fit in almost everything I've ever looked for. It does feel crowded, and the aisles are quite narrow, so perhaps that's their secret. The staff has been hit or miss in terms of how knowledgeable they are about projects, but they've all been very friendly. Street parking only. Dog friendly.

This business exists in the Oregon vortex where ordinary individuals can easily purchase specialized items because there is little wholesale/retail division here. Other states with sales taxes are radically different. Wholesale businesses, in those other nasty states, don't collect sales tax. Too complicated. And for that reason, they don't sell to you and me, ever. But the Steel Yard does sell to you, me and everyone we know! The Steel Yard is a gravely paved industrial spot in the permanent autonomous zone, by the tracks, near I'm sure, plenty of hazardous waste areas. They will never build condos there. It helps to check their website ahead of time or phone the nice staff about what they have, and the lengths and prices. And length matters. This is not a "it's not how long you make it, it's how you make it long" kind of place. I'll get back to that. They have steel plate, steel bar, rod, I-beam, round/ rectangular and square tube. It's all rusty, except some stainless, so don't expect otherwise. They can cut it to length, but there may be a charge. I have purchased 1/8" plate to form nifty plant bed borders in the yard. It's pretty flexy-bendy, cool. And if you are a welder, you got to know the Steel Yard. You need to get into the mindset that the yard staff and even the office are more used to industrial purchasers. You are not going to get your ego stroked by friendly customer-service felial waitrons, especially on busy Saturdays. Most of the customers are in welding clothes and drive beat trucks. You don't need a fancy truck if you can just fix the old one with a welding rod. Drive in, knowing what you want. The yard dudes load it while you walk to the office to pay. Be a pro. Don't block things. If you have a ton of questions, pull off to the side, before asking, On length. Plan ahead how lengthly and heavy the metal you are buying is. Bring a suitably studly vehicle, even if you have to borrow a friend and their truck, because it's hard to fit a 20' length of steel in a Mini. Yes, size matters. Bring the law-required flag for protruding things you are hauling in your bench seat vehicle. So it's a little different than the suburban retail suppliers. Here it is all about the price per pound and the pounds per foot. But if you want raw STEEL at industrial prices, cheap, this is the most solid place in Portlandia.
